Book Description
This is a classic book, representing the first major breakthrough in the field of modern financial theory. In effect, it created the mathematics of portfolio selection in a model which has turned out to be the indispensable building block from which the theory of the demand for risky securities is constructed. It also became an essential reference for individuals and financial institutions actually selecting optimal portfolios. Long out of print and unavailable to numerous recent entrants to both financial theory and financial practice, this new edition leaves the existing text as it stands but adds substantial new material including a new bibliography and a fascinating biographical piece on the birth of the field of finance.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent .......2007-01-13
Clear mathematics goes all the way from statistics, probabilistics, to #D geometry and Simplex mthod. all applied to the one financial problem:how to select teh adequate portfolio.
Finance understanding.......2007-01-09
Although an old work, it established the basis of modern portfolio selection theory. Foundations are mandatory for those who want to get a grasp on the matter and helps better undestand modern theory. First half of the book is a ride, second half is a harder time.
What a book!.......2005-11-21
Almost 50 years after its first printing there is not a single word that should be changed. As some of Markowitz' important original insights have been ignored or overlooked by many of his successors, this is still a must-read for anybody truly interested in portfolio theory.
A brilliant intellectual feat.......2001-08-31
While Markowitz is a name well-known in economics (joint winner of the Nobel Proze in 1990) and the investment industry, it is known hardly at all among the public. Perhaps this is the inevitable fate of a man well ahead of his time: Markowitz's work on the relationship of risk and return is truly one of the staggering intellectual achievements of modern economics, and has a great practical impact on people's economic welfare. This volume recapitulates his argument that risk is what drives return, rather than being (as was thought by earlier generations of money managers) merely an unfortunate by-product of the search for higher returns, that the portfolio dominates its constituent assets, and that the way to minimise risk for a given level of expected return is to minimise the covariance of returns of the assets within that portfolio using a quadratic programming algorithm. This is brilliant, seminal stuff, written with a liveliness usually lacking in economic texts.
The original classic.......1997-04-27
This is a reprint of the text that first considered risk along with return in portfolio management! Nobel-prize winner Harry Markowitz explains the theory upon which modern portfolio theory is based in minimal mathematical terms. Of course there has been much subsequent academic research in portfolio theory (much of which is contained in an included bibliography up to 1970), but this book is an outstanding starting point for anyone interested in the efficient management of financial portfolios
Book Description
Measuring and Analyzing Behavior in Organizations brings together the latest advances in measurement and data analysis, providing accessible, current discussions of measurement, applied statistics, research methods, and data analysis. The book details the range of problems that can be addressed with these new approaches, answering the more complex questions with sophisticated analyses that can extract more information from the data than simpler methods. The contributors provide workable solutions to many previously intractable problems, including those that require measuring change, studying person-environment fit, understanding the effects of error, and more.

Book Description
Understanding the mechanisms associated with metal complexes and the sequestering metal contaminants in the environment is essential for effective remediation. Heavy Metal Release in Soils describes and quantifies desorption/release kinetics and dissolution reactions in the release of heavy metals from soil. The book focuses on: New techniques - microscopic surface techniques, NMR and electrophoresis, XAFS, SFM, and time-resolved ATR-FTIR Theoretical analysis and kinetic approaches - adsorption/desorption hysteresis, competitive sorption and transport, multi-component models, speciation kinetics, isotherms and soil and metal parameters, and the role of soil properties on transport Applications - arsenic speciation and mobility in contaminated soils, modeling activity of CD, Zn, and Cu in contaminated soils, and in situ chemical immobilization A timely addition to the literature, this book highlights the desorption/release mechanisms for the purpose of resolving remediation dilemmas in contaminated environments. It gives you the added advantage of case studies at both the microscopic and macroscopic scales, and provides both experimental and numerical investigations. With contributions from an international panel of authors, Heavy Metals Release in Soils fills a gap in the current literature concerned with subsurface contaminant fate and transport processes.

heavy metals release in soils.......2001-07-10
this book covers different background for metal contamination in nature. I can learn adsorption-desorption and transport behavior of metals on natural materials or oxide minerals. Each chapter is excellent and explain completely about their specific subjects. This book should be referred to be reference books or text book.

Description:
Soil washing is considered a useful technique for remediating metal-contaminated soils. This study examined the release edges of Cd, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu or Pb in two contaminated rice soils from central Taiwan. The concentrations exceeding the trigger levels established by the regulatory agency of Taiwan were Cu, Zn, Ni and Cr for the Ho-Mei soil and Pb for the Nan-Tou soil. Successive extractions with HCl ranging from 0 to 0.2M showed increased release of the heavy metals with declining pH, and the threshold pH value below which a sharp increase in the releases of the heavy metals was highest for Cd, Zn, and Ni (pH 4.6 to 4.9), intermediate for Pb and Cu (3.1 to 3.8) and lowest for Fe (2.1), Al (2.2) and Cr (1.7) for the soils. The low response slope of Ni and Cr particularly for the rice soils make soil washing with the acid up to the highest concentration used ineffective to reduce their concentrations to below trigger levels. Although soil washing with 0.1M HCl was moderately effective in reducing Cu, Pb, Zn and Cd, which brought pH of the soils to 1.1+/-0.1 (S.D.), the concurrent release of large quantities of Fe and Al make this remediation technique undesirable for the rice soils containing high clay. Successive washings with 0.01M HCl could be considered an alternative as the dissolution of Fe and Al was minimal, and between 46 to 64% of Cd, Zn, and Cu for the Ho-Mei soil and 45% of Pb in the Na-Tou soil were extracted after four successive extractions with this dilute acid solution. The efficacy of Cd extraction improved if CaCl"2 was added to the acid solution. The correlation analysis revealed that Cr extracted was highly correlated (P
<0.001) with Fe extracted, whereas the Cu, Ni, Zn, Cd or Pb extracted was better correlated (P
<0.001) with Al than with Fe extracted. It is possible that the past seasonal soil flooding and drainage in the soils for rice production was conducive to incorporating Cr within the structure of Fe oxide, thereby making them extremely insoluble even in 0.2M HCl solution. The formation of solid solution of Ni with Al oxide was also possible, making it far less extractable than Cd, Zn, Cu, or Pb with the acid concentrations used.
Book Description
In this unusual and much-needed reappraisal of Freud's clinical technique, M. Guy Thompson challenges the conventional notion that psychoanalysis promotes relief from suffering and replaces it with a more radical assertion, that psychoanalysis seeks to mend our relationship with the real that has been fractured by our avoidance of the same. Thompson suggests that, while avoiding reality may help to relieve our experience of suffering, this short-term solution inevitably leads to a split in our existence.
M. Guy Thompson forcefully disagrees with the recent trend that dismisses Freud as an historical figure who is out of step with the times. He argues, instead, for a return to the forgotten Freud, a man inherently philosophical and rooted in a Greek preoccupation with the nature of truth, ethics, the purpose of life and our relationship with reality. Thompson's argument is situated in a stunning re-reading of Freud's technical papers, including a new evaluation of his analyses of Dora and the Rat Man in the context of Heidegger's understanding of truth.
In this remarkable examination of Freud's technical recommendations, M. Guy Thompson explains how psychoanalysis was originally designed to re-acquaint us with realities we had abandoned by encountering them in the contest of the analytic experience. This provocative examination of Freud's conception of psychoanalysis reveals a more personal Freud than we had previously supposed, one that is more humanistic and real.

Good ESL Vietnamese-English/ English-Vietnamese Dict........2007-09-30
This is a good standard dictionary that can help any Vietnamese communicate with a Non-Vietnamese speaker and vice versa. It has been very helpful to my nephew, who is an English Second Language learner, in school and at home. It helps to explain to a Vietnamese user how English is pronounced. It's not the best or newest font, but it is readable. It is a simple good dictionary that helps to explain the meaning of words in Vietnameses and English.
Not terribly useful.......2001-02-20
I am studying Vietnamese in college, and I have found that this book causes more confusion than it helps. It does not cleary define words, and it is inconsistent when translating from english to vietnamese and vietnamese to english. I would definitely not recommend this book. However, I did give it two stars (instead of one) because it did contain some obscure words I would not be able to find else where (like 'Jesus freak'). :)
Barely acceptable.......2000-03-20
This dictionary serves its purpose as a dictionary, giving Vietnamese equivalents for English words and English equivalents for Vietnamese words. If you expect any more than that, such as explanations on how to pronounce Vietnamese, grammatical explanations, or other resources that may helpful to the foreign learner of Vietnamese, you will have to look elsewhere. Things like sections on synonyms and antonyms in English would seem to make this dictionary more suited to the Vietnamese-speaking learner of English. The print quality isn't as horrible as it is in some Hippocrene dictionaries, but readability in some spots is iffy. This is especially a problem given the intricate array of accent marks that Vietnamese uses.
probably the worst dictionary I have ever had to use.......1999-10-02
This seems to be made up of many obsolete words. There was no intoduction to explain how the Vietnamese alphabet is used - that it is in a different order than in English. It explains to the Vietnamese user how the English is pronounced but does not do the same for the English speaker.

Customer Reviews:
This is the BEST book EVER EVER EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-26
This is my all-time favorite book. It is one of those books you just can't put down. I would be dishonest to say it had any flaws. My favorite parts are where Anika (the main character) is listening to her neighbors' aunt's stories, especially about how the jewel shop owner gave the old woman "glass" copies of the jewels she had and the time where she makes the Christmas carp by herself. Eva Ibbotson is a great author anyway, and this is her book "jewel," fitting the story.
OK Book reviewed by Sam.......2007-04-20
Do you celebrate your birthday or your found day? Well, Annika the main character of The Star of Kazan by Eva Ibbotston celebrates her Found Day which was the day that a cook named Ellie and a housemaid, named Sigird who work for three professors, found Annika in a beautiful church.
Annika is a servant who goes to bed every night with one thought that puts her to sleep, her real mother coming to find her in Vienna. Vienna is a beautiful town in Austria. Annika has a lot of friends in Vienna, including an old lady who lives next door. Annika looked after her and started to grow fond of the old lady. When Annika was looking after the old lady the lady would tell her stories and one day the old lady showed Annika a chest of jewels and necklaces that were copied. There was one copied jewel that was emerald and circular and that jewel was called the Star of Kazan.
The Star of Kazan is a thrilling adventure. If you need an adventurous book then you should read the The Star of Kazan.
The Star of Kazan.......2006-11-08
My daughter and I read this book together and loved it from beginning to end. Some books start off slow and gradually get more interesting, this one is an attention-getter from page one. My daughter, who's eight, and I both looked forward to reading it every night.

The Star of Kazan .......2006-10-22
Title:The Star of Kazan
Author:Eva Ibbotson
Genre: Fiction
This book is about a girl who was found in a church, by two maids on vacation. They went back to Vienna. Both the maids asked The Professors (their boss) if they could keep her. They said yes. Happy and excited the new parents decided to name their new child Annika.
As Annika grew she grew into a maid and a fabulous cook. Sigrid the first maid taught her how to do everything around the house. Ellie taught her everything about cooking. That became something she cherished and loved. She also became friends with a very old lady, La Rondine, who had a chest of supposedly fake jewel. Annika was found of the lady and didn't want her to die. But, when she died the jewels became willed to Annika.
As Annika grew older she wished to know who her real parents where and why she was left in the seat of a church in the mountains. Every night she dreamed her true mother who was very beautiful and elegantly dressed to come to her door and say, "Where is my child? I must see my long lost child." One day this happened and her mother came forth. Everything Annika had imagined of her mother she was. Beautiful, elegant, and loving. She was to become a "von." The day she left was a gloomy and quite day, no one wanted her to leave.
At her new home in Spittal she was disturbed. The rooms were cold, the food was cold, and where there was to be paintings there was nothing. She also had a brother, Hermann and a cousin, Gundrun. They both were very gloomy. She soon became friends with the caretaker of the farm, Zed. Zed also had a dog name Hector. The threes spent a lot of time together. One day Hector found a pircture, it was La Rondine. All of a sudden the estate changed, the had aquaired a big sum of money from a relative. Annika didn't know it but because she had should her mother the picture she was to be sent to Grossenflous, a boarding school. Later Zed was to be blamed. Annika's mother said Zed was not to be trusted and she listened. When Zed heard of the new he ran away with Hermann's horse.
At Grossenflous no one ever talked laughed or had fun. The place sucked the souls out of eveyr child who attended. Day by day she became thinner. One da y the Professors found unsual piece of information, got more information, and found out where Annika was. Soon the Professors, Ellie, Sigrid, and Stefen, their close friend were headed toward Grossenflous. There they devised a plan to get Annika out. It worked, but Professor Gertrude's harp was shattered in the escape. Annika was taken back to Vienna and told to rest. She rested for three days.
You have to read the book to see how it all ends.
My comments:
The author is descriptive so you get an image in your head, but she doesn't overdue it. The whole story was told in third person, but I think first person would give it a different feel. More feeling. This book was pretty well. I kept on reading most of the time, however it did have some slow parts. It had a great plot and twist at the end of the book I never saw coming. The book didn't remind of other books though. Still it was an awesome book.
