Book Description
What manager is not anxious about the future? We live in a white-knuckled age of rapid technological change and global instability. But uncertainty is not the enemy, says management expert Paul J. H. Schoemaker. It is where the greatest opportunities are. To unlock these opportunities, however, requires a very different approach to strategy and implementation. In this pioneering book, Dr. Schoemaker presents a systematic approach that combines concepts such as scenario planning, options thinking, and dynamic monitoring to create novel strategies for profiting from ambiguity.
Building on his experience with more than one hundred consulting projects in fields ranging from health care to manufacturing, from utilities to financial services, Schoemaker shows how major corporations throughout the world have used his pathbreaking methodology to prepare for an un-certain future and profit from it. In this first comprehensive approach to the subject, Schoemaker shows the reader (1) how to develop and analyze multiple industry scenarios, (2) craft nimble strategies with just the right amount of flexibility, (3) implement them using an options approach, and (4) make real-time adjustments through dynamic monitoring. As a leading academic thinker and practitioner, the author draws on the frontiers of decision science, organization theory, strategy, and cognitive psychology to integrate the most practical contributions these various fields have made to navigating uncertainty.
One need only follow the news to see the risks of being unprepared for change. And yet the rewards for actively pursuing new opportunities are greater than ever. More than any other capability, skill in seizing initiatives in shifting, unpredictable circumstances is the key to success. Profiting from Uncertainty provides a road map to do just that.

Helpful review.......2002-10-08
The best thing going for this book is that it is in fact well-written not like most of the dreck in business books. The ideas here are not revolutionary and you're not likely to find anything you hadn't at least heard before. It does however organize all of these disparate thoughts and bring them together in a way to help motivate action.
Along the way I'd also recommend Tony Murphy's Achieving Business Value from IT as a book that effectively does the same thing -- organizes information well to help you move toward positive action and improving process and performance (as oppossed to strategy which is this books forte).

Book Description
Tree Crop Ecosystems is a unique new resource which combines the interests of traditional foresters and horticulturalists. Sixteen chapters written by international experts in the field emphasise the current topical issues besetting each of the crops considered. In the past the management of tree crops was focussed on yield without an adequate understanding of crop behaviour. Recent decades have seen many major advances in knowledge, notably those related tree biology and biodiversity within species and between different crops. Throughout the volume the issue of biodiversity is discussed as a key factor in relation to: the conservation of natural resources at risk; within species variation; and the flora and fauna associated with tree crops.
Tree Crop Ecosystems is unique in taking an holistic approach to the crops, their origins and within-species variation. Direct and indirect influences of the crops on their ecosystem are considered throughout the volume. Genetic resources of these crops as well as their pests and pathogens are also included. The case studies presented in
Tree Crop Ecosystems harness the most recent advances in knowledge and consider their value in practical resource management. Eleven of the sixteen chapters in this volume are concerned with the management of specific crops (temperate and tropical conifers and broad-leaves with an emphasis on eucalypts and conifers; tea, coffee, palms, apple and rubber). The remaining chapters focus on multipurpose trees, the complex of minor species and environmental influences.

Book Description
An understanding of the characteristics and the ecology of soils, particularly those of forest ecosystems in the humid tropics, is central to the development of sustainable forest management systems. The present book examines the contribution that forest soil science and forest ecology can make to sustainable land use in the humid tropics. Four main issues are addressed: characteristics and classification of forest soils, chemical and hydrological changes after forest utilization, soil fertility management in forest plantations and agroforestry systems as well as ecosystem studies from the dipterocarp forest region of Southeast Asia. Additionally, case studies include work from Guyana, Costa Rica, the Philippines, Malaysia, Australia and Nigeria.

Description:
Agroforestry systems are often mentioned as a type of sustainable agriculture that is appropriate for the edapho-climatic conditions of Amazonia. However, long-term studies on the sustainability of this land use do not exist. This study evaluates the soil fertility in smallholder agroforestry systems in Western Amazonia, and compares the fertility of land under agroforestry with the fertility of neighboring land under pasture and native forest. Smallholdings located in Nova California, Rondonia, Brazil, were selected, with two different soil types. Soil pH, organic C, P, K, Ca, Mg and Al were determined. The soils of the agroforestry system maintained their improved chemical characteristics that originated in the burn, especially with respect to increased levels of exchangeable Ca and Mg and reduction of exchangeable Al, while maintaining stable levels of organic C, even when compared to adjacent primary forest soils. However, in the agroforestry system K and P fell to extremely low levels, below those considered to be critical for Amazonian soils. This reduction can reasonably be attributed to nutrient exports by consecutive harvests of cupuassu (Theobroma grandiflorum, Sterculiaceae) and pejibaye (Bactris gasipaes, Palmae) fruits. These nutrients can limit sustainable fruit yields in the agroforestry systems.

Description:
Dehesa, open oak woodland, is the most extended agroforestry system in Europe, with more than 3 million hectares existing in the south-western Iberian peninsula. However, today, thousands of trees are still being lost every year and soils that are more fertile have already been completely deforested. A better understanding of the effects of oak trees on crops could help in designing management practices to ensure sustainability of this traditional agroforestry system. The aim of this study was to examine the effect of Holm-oak (Quercus ilex L.) on soil nutrient concentration and its consequent effect on the production of understorey crops (oats: Avena sativa L.) in intercropped dehesas of central-western Spain. Crop production, crop plant characteristics (weight and size), the nutritional status of crop plants (N, P, K and Mg) and soil nutrient content in the topsoil layer (0-30cm: texture, pH, soil organic matter (SOM), total and mineral N, available P, cation exchange capacity (CEC) and base cations) were determined. Samples were taken around 6 trees per plot at distances ranging from 2 to 30m from the tree trunk, in 16 intercropped plots differing in soil fertility and fertilisation rate. Soil fertility increased near the trees, with a significant increase of SOM, total N, available P, CEC and exchangeable Ca^2^+ and K^+. By contrast, pH and soil particle size did not vary significantly with the distance from the tree. In unfertilised plots, trees had a positive effect on crop production, with higher crop production occurring beneath trees than beyond tree canopy projection. Fertilisers outweighed the positive effect of trees in fertilised plots, where crop production was reduced near to the trees. This could be explained mainly by management practices (biased distribution of seeds and fertilisers by broadcast spreaders), whereas light reduction probably played a minimal role (explained only 2% of the crop yield variability).

Description:
Tree/crop systems under agroforestry practice are capable of sequestering carbon (C) in the standing biomass and soil. Although studies have been conducted to understand soil organic C increases in some agroforestry technologies, little is known about C sequestered in simultaneous tree/crop intercropping systems. The main objective of this study was to determine the effect of agroforestry practice on C sequestration and CO"2-C efflux in a gliricidia-maize intercropping system. The experiment was conducted at an experimental site located at the Makoka Agricultural Research Station, in Malawi. The studies involved two field plots, 7-year (MZ21) and 10-year (MZ12), two production systems (sole-maize and gliricidia-maize simultaneous intercropping systems). A 7-year-old grass fallow (Grass-F) was also included. Gliricidia prunings were incorporated at each time of tree pruning in the gliricidia-maize. The amount of organic C recycled varied from 0.8 to 4.8MgCha^-^1 in gliricidia-maize and from 0.4 to 1.0MgCha^-^1 in sole-maize. In sole-maize, net decreases of soil carbon of 6MgCha^-^1 at MZ12 and 7MgCha^-^1 at MZ21 in the topsoil (0-20cm) relative to the initial soil C were observed. After 10 years of continuous application of tree prunings C was sequestered in the topsoil (0-20cm) in gliricidia-maize was 1.6 times more than in sole-maize. A total of 123-149MgCha^-^1 were sequestered in the soil (0-200cm depth), through root turnover and pruning application in the gliricidia-maize system. Carbon dioxide evolution varied from 10 to 28kgha^-^1day^-^1 in sole-maize and 23 to 83kgha^-^1day^-^1 in gliricidia-maize. We concluded that gliricidia-maize intercropping system could sequester more C in the soil than sole-maize.

Description:
The Kyoto Protocol entering into force on 16 February 2005 continues to spur interest in development of carbon trading mechanisms internationally and domestically. Critical to the development of a carbon trading effort is verification that carbon has been sequestered, and field level measurement of C change is likely cost prohibitive. Estimating C change based on agricultural management practices related to carbon sequestration seems more realistic, and analysis of satellite imagery could be used to monitor and verify these practices over large areas. We examined using Landsat imagery to verify crop rotations and quantify crop residue biomass in north central Montana. Field data were collected using a survey of farms. Standard classification tree analysis (CTA) and boosted classification and regression tree analysis (BCTA) were used to classify crop types. Linear regression (LM), regression tree analysis (RTA), and stochastic gradient boosting (SGB) were used to estimate crop residue. Six crop types were classified with 97% accuracy (BCTA) with class accuracies of 88-99%. Paired t-tests were used to compare the difference between known and predicted mean crop residue biomass. The difference between known and predicted mean residues using SGB was not different than 0 (p-value=0.99); however root mean square error (RMSE) was large (1981kgha^-^1), implying that SGB accurately predicted regional crop residue biomass but not local predictions (i.e., field or farm level). The results of this study, and previous research classifying tillage practices and estimating soil disturbance, supports using satellite imagery as an effective tool for monitoring and verifying agricultural management practices related to carbon sequestration over large areas.

Description:
The increased population pressure in the Peruvian Amazon has reduced the fallow periods from 10-15 to 3-5 years in recent years, leading to rapid soil degradation, low crop yields and greater deforestation. Short-duration planted tree fallows have been considered as a solution to overcome the problems of the traditional land use system and increase crop production and income. An experiment was conducted at Yurimaguas evaluating planted tree fallows of inga (Inga edulis) and colubrina (Colubrina glandulosa), with and without centrosema (Centrosema macrocarpum) cover, compared with the traditional bush fallow and herbaceous centrosema cover crop in terms of weed suppression, their ability to increase subsequent crop production and overall economic benefits. The fallow vegetation was cleared and burnt after 3 years of growth for cropping. Maize, cowpea, and rice were grown in the three subsequent seasons. The planted trees grew faster and accumulated more biomass than those in natural fallow. Centrosema as a pure cover crop as well as an understorey between trees effectively suppressed weeds. The tree fallows with or without centrosema did not increase crop yields compared with natural fallow and resulted in significantly lower yields in the third post-fallow season. Only pure centrosema significantly increased maize yields in the first season after its harvest compared with natural fallow. Utilizing very conservative price and production parameters for the improved fallow systems, the inga and inga+centrosema systems had the highest net present values (NPV) of USD 509 and 392ha^-^1, respectively. However, natural fallow had the highest benefit/cost ratio of 1.5, due to its lower costs relative to the more intensive fallow systems. All other fallows had lower benefit/cost ratios. Using the sensitivity analysis of NPV and returns to labor under more optimistic conditions in a graduated manner, the NPV for the two systems with colubrina (poles) increased to USD 1421 and 1782, with higher labor returns. Planted fallows with economically valuable trees such as inga and colubrina have the potential to raise farmers' income and alleviate degradation of natural resources in the humid tropics of Peru, but they require more extensive testing under a range of biophysical and socio-economic conditions.

Sterotypical He-Man Motorcyclist with a Heart.......2007-03-04
I have read just about every motorcycle book there is and this book "Life is a Road, Get on it and Ride" has to be one of the worst in the genre. The writing is on par a 7th grade essay. Here's an excerpt from page 8: "Borderline hypothermic, I then soaked me, in several progressively hotter tubs."
Poor writing skills combine with the author's massive ego and excessively weak environmental introspection to produce one of the most inane book series on the market. The text includes Meyer's attempt at poetry which makes me gag. Read "The Dark Side of the Man" to learn how pathetic and self-absorbed this guy is. Forget these books. They are a waste of money and time.
Just finished reading.......2005-07-27
Just finished reading "Life is a Road, the Soul is a Motorcycle", what a great book! Very good read with many wonderful visual images created with words. As close to actually riding as you can get from your chair. If Heinlein, Thoreau, Castaneda & Richard Bach got together to write a motorcycle book this might be it.
Couldn't put this book down..........2005-02-24
More than just a book on riding. Daniel's stories reflect a way of life and living it. Personally, I think he's right on target. I can't get enough of his writing. His style borders on Indiana Jones meets ghandi, a good mix, with a flare toward the dramatic (the magic) an inspirational combination that lights a fire in his reader to follow their dreams rather than fall into complacency. For me the motorcycle has been a valuable tool to find my place in the universe, experience peace and live. This book backs up what I have always known - discover it for yourself, See you on the road...
Just a bit disappointed.......2004-11-16
As a rider who enjoys reading about riding, I found Daniel Meyer's first book to capture something essential about the need to ride a motorcycle. Even his tales of driving from one Denny's to the next, in search of hot fudge sundaes, were humorous in a quiet, warm, and homey way, and so I eagerly picked up this second book hoping for something of the same experience. I was disappointed. While some of the stories in the first book strained credulity, they still brought a smile to my face. Too many in this collection strayed so far from the believable that they made my eyes roll instead. The author can be forgiven for his quasi-mystical take on life and riding. There is certainly a tradition for this in motorcycle books. But harder to take is Mr. Meyer's need (more in this book) to tell tall tales which unabashedly position him as couragous, heroic, and the object of feminine desire. Rather than capturing the sweetness and "magic" that is often so much a part of ordinary motorcyle riding and the people in it, these stories seem to reflect another kind of ordinariness-- the tendency of some authors to devolve into writing that is theatrical, pseudo-philosophical, and blantantly self-aggrandizing. If Mr. Meyer writes another book I will buy it,(I like motorcycle books) but I will hope for more warmth and less narcissism.
Book Description
First published in 1986, The Bilingual Family has provided thousands of parents with the information and advice they need to make informed decisions about what language policy to adopt with their children. This second edition contains updated references and new entries to the alphabetical reference guide.
Customer Reviews:
Very educative book!.......2006-03-29
I bought this book trying to find some guidance regarding raising a bilingual kid. I was very pleased with the contents of the book and the way information is presented.
Being a bilingual myself, I also enjoy a lot of anecdotes about the "complications" when using my weaker language.
I highly recommend this book.
Nothing Useful or New.......2006-02-20
I was disappointed with this book. It presents general overview of linguistics and language development that one can find in multiple other sources. There is no practical advise on raising children bilingually. Case studies illustrating possible scenarios are for the most part inapplicable and lack detail to be useful in practice. There are very few books that should go straight into recycling bin - and this is one of them.
The Bilingual Family : A Handbook for Parents.......2005-10-23
Limited use. I wanted a book to help me with how to approach bylinguilism but this book was just theory.
Mes pensees.......2005-08-18
This book start with an intro to baby's development of language, then talks about the different types of bilinguals. And this is followed by different approach to bilinguism.
I think this book goes deep enough into the subject to make good decisions with what you want to do to approach this as a parent.
Not a handbook for parents.......2005-03-01
This is a very comprehensive book about the general subject of raising bilingual children, based on a number of case studies. I am sure that therefore it would be of great use to anyone studying a linguistic subject in this realm.
However as a handbook for parents who want to raise a bilingual child it hardly offers any advise. I have a different native tongue than my wife, who's native language is English. Living in an English speaking country I would like my daughter to learn my (foreign) native language too. What I was looking for is a book with tips and ideas, such as word games, books, etc. to bring a second language playfully and naturally into a toddler's life.
If you are looking for such a book too, this is not the one. Although the book may be good for a linguistics student I have to give it a low rating because of its misleading title.
Customer Reviews:
useful, but somewhat weak and full of itself.......2007-07-16
As written in several reviews there are lots of repetitions, and that might be because the book is written as a collection of questions and answers. Nevertheless one advantage of the book is to obtain a fast answer to some questions related to raising a bilingual child, like what type of schools are available. I have three main issues with this book.
1) the author or editor likes to write some WORDS in bold (i put here the EQUIVALENT in large caps). This IS extremely disturbing because it seems that the READER is considered as an idiot. Also THERE seems to be no real logic in terms of what words are bolded or not. It is the first time I see a book EDITED like that, and I hope the last time.
2) The book is written in the not-that-sharp-academic style. In other words many answers are a collection of facts and possibilities, without real insight about what to chose or what influence a decision will have on your child future.
3) The author bases lots of statements on her proudly raising three bilingual children in Welsh and English. These two languages belong however to the same family of indo-european languages. Some of the advice of the author are therefore questionable regarding bilingualism involving very different languages (for us, mandarin and french). Furthermore, the author differentiates all along the book between high-profile languages (French, English, German) and minority or lower level languages like Spanish or Asian languages. The former languages should benefit your children while the latter ones are not so interesting. The book does not say it so plainy, but there is a rassistic tone, eurocentric, that I profundly dislike.
Bilingual Children.......2007-02-08
If you're thinking about raising your child to be bilingual, this is the book to get. There's actually not much else out there currently. It's a little theoretical and not very practical in terms of day to day operation, but it's a great place to start in making a family language learning plan.
Ad nauseam.......2005-04-13
The author clearly knows his stuff, but is guilty of making a book out of the following contents
- Favour using your native language with the child if you speak other languages weakly
- One parent one language, avoid mixing two languages in the same context
- It's mostly not true that bi- and multilingual children get "confused"
- If your children have problems, it's probably not bilingualism's fault
- Use common sense
- Aren't my analogies beautiful?
- Use some more common sense
Now copy and paste this 2000 times and there you have the book.
Thorough Guide for the Inquiring Parent.......2005-01-19
After reading an excerpt via the "look inside" feature Amazon offers, I decided to give this book a try. As a parent debating whether to send her child to a dual language program (yes, there are different bilingual programs..read to find out!), this book answered many if not all of my questions. I liked the Q & A format, and found it easy to read (especially when time is limited with two young children). There isn't a lot of information out there about the effects of bilingual education on language majority children, and this is one book I found that addressed this. I was particularly concerned about my child's reading development (or lack of) if first taught in a language other than our own. The book did address this issue, and I've never found another that does! All parents want their child to succeed, so it is important for a book for parents to address issues such as this.
It's true the book is repetitive in some areas, but I believe this is due to the format. A reader might look up an answer to one question, but not bother to read the book straight through.
A few criticisms: It is a little slanted towards European language development. However, it appears that this is the author's area of expertise. I also would have liked to have citations to references. "Research shows..." is not enough information for me! Where did Mr. Baker get this information? I'm comforted that he does seem to be an expert in this field, as he has written textbooks on bilingual theory, but still...parents want references too!
For a parent who wants to know more about bilingual education and how it will affect their child's development, this is a good read. Overall, I found the advice sound and useful.
For All Parents with a Bad Bilingual Conscience.......2004-06-03
Colin Baker's handbook is a help for which bilingual parents have waited for too long a time. In this new edition, Baker includes the most recent research results in a format which allows perpetually busy parents to read according to their current perception of their individual set of language parenting problems. Nearly anything that can go right or wrong is treated somewhere in the course of these myriad questions. For ready reference, the questions are listed in the table of contents.
What tends to happen to the reader is, however, the following: You begin by looking up "your" question and read the very readable answers Baker offers - and just do not stop there. Suddenly you realize that there are many thousands of other parents with concerns much like your own, who are also asking interesting questions - and the television stays turned off for the rest of the evening.
We have bought this book for the reference of the parents and teachers in our International School. Because bilingual and multilingual children are not simply monolingual children with two or more languages at their disposal, raising them means adjusting to a different mode of thinking. For monolingual parents and teachers this means learning that such children will experience specific phases in their development, encounter specific advantages and disadvantages in their learning progress, which the monolingual adults did not experience in this way. Parents and teachers must learn to monitor the advancement of their children's learning in a manner congruent with an unfamiliar, but not threatening, reality. Colin Baker's book is one of the best works for teachers and parents who want to be able to assist bilingual and multilingual children in making the best possible use of their developmental opportunities.

Book Description
Venice is seen through the eyes of artist Fabrice Moireau, with sketches in watercolor and pencil. This resident of the world's most romantic city is the perfect guide to its streets, monuments, gardens and delightfully hidden corners.
Customer Reviews:
Un bel libro!.......2006-11-17
Having lived in Venice for five months, each scene in this book is the actualization of my own memories. I bought one book about Venice and gave it as a gift to my parents who were not there to see the city firsthand, and this book was it.
While not a travel guide or an in depth history book, this book does better than many others at capturing the light and true essence of Venice, the Serene Republic.
See Venice from a different perspective.......2006-05-27
I bought this book before I visited Venice last year and it proved to be a very effective way - together with my Dorling Kindersley Guide book (also recommended) - of creating a short-list of places to draw. Saved me hours of slogging round trying to find "that view"!
The drawings and watercolour sketches are extremely competent (if somewhat stylized) and give lots of inspiration for those working in watercolour of some the ways in which Venice can be portrayed.
Beautiful Book.......2006-02-25
A wonderful book for lovers of Venice and for those who would like to look at some of the incredible treasures of this magical, romantic city!
In Praise of Serenissima.......2005-01-02
Whether you have traveled to Venice and are already under its magnetic, elusive spell or whether you plan to visit...or even if your fantasy world includes bits of Serenissima, VENICE SKETCHBOOK is bound to please.
Artist Fabrice Moireau travels Europe with his sketchpad, rendering quick sketches in watercolor that capture the light and moment as reflected by the architecture of the place. This book is his prolonged visit to Venice and he has visited every island, canal, bridge, and hidden place that make this wonderfully decaying old Queen of the Adriatic a romantic paradise. His sketches are beautifully executed, not always with scholarly perspective, but capturing the Venetian light, an amalgamation of sun, water, fog, and mist, like few others have in this medium. Sensitive hand written notes on each page by the important 'models' make the sketches come even more alive.
The book is graced by a fine Introduction by Deborah Howard who teaches architectural history at Cambridge and has written extensively about the architecture of Venice, Veneto, and the Italian Renaissance. In her elegant writing she sets the mood for viewing the sketches with an abundant but concise discussion of the history of Venice.
The book is divided into sections of the city and writer Tudy Sammartini, who lives and works in Venice, opens each sector with fascinating comments about the history of the buildings, the churches, the monuments, and all the sights that sector holds. Her background in the history of her beloved Venice enhances the value of this book beyond the simple coffee table picture book. Her writing is warmly readable and very informed.
Marry the contributions of these three talented people and the result is a book that is not only visually attractive and lovingly published on 'watercolor paper', but is also an informative and meditative volume of praise for the city known as Serenissima. Grady Harp, January 2005
An enchanting book.......2004-12-29
This book was a gift from a close friend who knows I am planning my first trip to Venice this spring. I have been immersing myself in guides to Venice, and this book, with its charming and skillful watercolors and expert commentary, seems the perfect introduction to this fascinating city.
It is not a guidebook per se, more of an artistic appreciation. Many of the comments are in cursive writing, so it seems you are looking at a personal sketchbook with running comments. The watercolors convey the interplay of light and color better than any photographs I've seen.
This book is clearly a labor of love.
