The Other Path: The Economic Answer to Terrorism
ASIN: 1571052461 |
Book Description
This unique and timely book addresses the threats to and responses by Corporate America, U.S. labor, and the U.S. government triggered by the unprecedented September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The book details these incidents and assesses their human and financial costs; the multi-dimensional aspects of terrorism and its historical context; and the U.S. business community at home and abroad as principal victims of terrorism over the last 40 years. Next, the volume describes the costs of the September 11 attacks in terms of economic indicators, financial markets, and the impact on local, state, and national levels. The publication then covers the multi-faceted responses of Corporate America focusing on industry sectors, companies, and implications to conducting business in the twenty-first century. Industries and companies that may experience growth as a result of corporate, government, and military responses to terrorism are highlighted. Terrorism's impact on the physical, psychological, and financial well-being of U.S. labor are described. Management costs due to terrorism are analyzed. Government responses to terrorism in terms of assuaging financial and human costs, stimulating the economy, and taking measures to reduce the threat of future terrorist incidents are noted. The conclusion highlights lessons learned and discusses future terrorist threats. An extensive bibliography enables the reader to reference additional materials for further study. An index provides easy access to key subjects in the book.
Customer Reviews:
An important work.......2002-06-03
While the literature of terrorism is evolving and our understanding of what took place on September 11th is growing, there is little in the area of terrorism and its impact on business. This book does a wonderful job of both reminding us of exactly what happened to many businesses in the months after the attack and setting forth a framework to understand how business and labor will be effected in the ongoing war on terrorism. I highly recommend this book.
Nice Job on 9/11 and Business Impact.......2002-05-10
Book gives an excellent discussion of the topics of business
and terrorism, 9/11, impact on companies and workers, and government reactions. Interesting section on firms that
are helping in war on terrorism. Good overview of terrorist attacks on American businesses. Nice job.
For those with a keen interest in modern economics.......2002-05-07
Terrorism And Business: The Impact Of September 11, 2001 is a serious study that focuses upon the reaction of corporate America, U.S. labor, and the U.S. government to the September 11 attacks. From economic impact to financial markets and broad-ranging effects at local, state, and national levels, Terrorism And Business provides the reader with a solid analysis of present and future repercussions as well as changes to the shape of business in America. A powerful, in-depth study Terrorism And Business is an especially timely and recommended read for those with a keen interest in modern economics and the impact of national and international terrorism upon the global marketplace.
A unique and welcome addition to the literature on terrorism.......2002-04-15
"Terrorism and Business" is a welcome addition to the available literature on terrorism that has grown since the events of 9/11. While most books focus on the personalities and groups behind terrorist events and/or the 'high-politics related' options available to the US and its allies in fighting the war against terrorism, this unique book touches on the 'low-politics related' threats to and responses of Corporate America, the Labor Movement, and other relevant actors.
Informative and Compelling.......2002-02-24
Most books on this subject tend to gloss over the myriad of issues dealing with terrorist events, and only focus on the political aspect. This book provides a comprehensive strategic overview of the economic issues and interrelations dealing with the tradegy of 9/11. The book is also successful in showing how countries across all regions of the world were economically impacted. It's well thought-out, with numerous facts, figures and references that begin the though task of quantifying the impact of 9/11.

Book Description
Focussing on the economics of terrorism in the post 9/11 world, this book brings together original research based on the collaborative efforts of leading economists and planners.
The authoritative and expert contributors use a variety of methodological approaches and apply them to different types of terrorist attacks (on airports, highways, seaports, electric power infrastructure, for example). They also draw analogies between man-made and natural disasters. The results suggest that these issues are extremely complex and that the economic costs of some types of attack are huge, but that increased understanding and estimation can be used to justify resource investments in prevention, mitigation and response. A primary aim of the book is to contribute to developing more cost-effective anti-terrorist policies.
Scholars and researchers in the fields of transportation, public sector economics, urban planning, disaster prevention, mitigation and management, and engineers will find The Economic Impacts of Terrorist Attacks a major contribution to a new and rapidly expanding research area.

A ground-breaking study of the extensive damage done to the American economy as a result of terrorism.......2006-05-03
Knowledgeably compiled and expertly co-edited by the team of Harry W. Richardson (James Irvine Chair of Urban and Regional Planning in the School of Policy, Planning and Development and the Department of Economics at the University of Southern California), Peter Gordon (School of Policy, Planning and development and the Department of Economics at the University of Southern California), and James E. Moore II (Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering and the Department of Civil Engineering and School of Policy, Planning and Development at the University of Southern California), The Economic Impacts Of Terrorist Attacks is a ground-breaking study of the extensive damage done to the American economy as a result of terrorism with a particular focus on the attacks in 2001. Introducing readers to a wealth of informed and informative statistics and facts concerning the direct and indirect economic impact of the terrorist attack on the world trade center, The Economic Impacts Of Terrorist Attacks also draws upon and presents information from and about American seaports, highways, airports, electric power infrastructure, and the differences in effect between natural disasters and the terrorist attacks upon the general economy. The Economic Impacts Of Terrorist Attacks is very highly recommended to students of politics, economics, and the present "war on terrorism".

Description:
This paper assesses the impact of the September 11 terrorist attacks and its after-effects on U.S. airline demand. Using monthly time-series data from 1986 to 2003, we find that September 11 resulted in both a negative transitory shock of over 30% and an ongoing negative demand shock amounting to roughly 7.4% of pre-September 11 demand. This ongoing demand shock has yet to dissipate (as of November 2003) and cannot be explained by economic, seasonal, or other factors.

Proven Strategies in Competitive Intelligence: Lessons from the Trenches

Early Warning: Using Competitive Intelligence to Anticipate Market Shifts, Control Risk, and Create Powerful Strategies
ASIN: 1567205054 |
Book Description
Almost two decades after it emerged as an essential business tool, competitive intelligence is still finding its way. Despite its recognized importance, companies struggle to acquire the kind of intelligence they need and measure its effectiveness and value. This book provides essential tools for selecting the right kind of CI and assessing its contributions to a company's financial performance. The authors identify three fundamental, intertwined mistakes a company can make, showing how to evaluate them and repair the damage they may have done. McGonagle and Vella dissect the current state of CI, survey its evolution into five distinct yet overlapping types, develop a framework for determining which types fit special needs, and evaluate means of communicating CI up and down the line. They discuss the most common raw data source categories--the bases of support for all CI analyses--and the workings of metrics in general. CI professionals and related end users are provided with a process they can employ immediately, right out of the box, which will not only help them select the right metric but will prove invaluable as they seek to evaluate the future metrics that are sure to come.
Customer Reviews:
A good. but not excellent, bottom line.......2003-01-11
This is a most interesting and unique CI book. It tries to do what most other books only address in passing - that is, to clarify the bottom-line impact of CI. This question is one that a number of my clients have had over the years and is a difficult question to answer. McGonagle and Vella provide what is one of the most descriptive and thorough processes I've seen yet for dealing with the "value" of CI - and that is no easy feat. I'm not certain they truly identified CI's bottom line value - and I don't think their discussion will allow us to generate a clean ROI number for example, but they did cover the wide range of factors that impact whether CI is useful to a company or not, and for that alone they deserve much praise.
The book, like the authors' previous efforts I've seen - and I note that they've written a good number of them through the years, is carefully written and systematic. That is something I both appreciate, and also find a bit frustrating, at the same time. I appreciate their step-wise walk in the chapters through the types of intelligence - active and defensive, as well as their lengthy discussion of sources - of which chapter 6 on sources is a good example of the benefits and drawbacks of their style. My frustration arises not from the discussion itself, but in the manner in which it is laid out as lengthy lists in the form of chapters - it does not make for easy reading but rather kind of a guidebook to be used on an as-needed basis during research. They also have pages and pages of charts - an example is the back half of chapter 4 on the divisions of CI, which I normally like, except that these charts look like a consumers buyers guide, go on for several pages at a time, and don't always have the headings running across the top of the pages or the codes on each page, making them hard to follow and interpret.
Having said all these things, this is a valuable effort - and will add to the bottom-line of any practitioner's understanding of the field. I think they've mostly missed out helping us better understand the financial return of CI that most execs I speak to want to know, but have helped us better understand its return in terms of the utility that CI practices can generate for an organization.
I'd recommend this book to experienced practitioners, and to individuals who lead CI efforts in their corporations. It is not as useful for beginners in the field, who would value more from one of these authors' previous efforts like the "Internet Age of CI," for example.

In 1978, 13 women set out to climb Annapurna I in the Nepal Himalaya, achieving the first ascent of the world's 10th highest mountain by an American and by a woman. By proving that women had the skill, strength, and courage necessary to make this difficult and dangerous climb, the 1978 Women's Himalayan Expedition's accomplishment had a positive impact around the world, changing perceptions about women's abilities in sports and other arenas. Twenty years later, Arlene Blum has republished her account, offering her story to a new generation. Blum writes in the introduction,
Annapurna has become for me a metaphor for difficult and important goals. Striving to achieve such objectives draws on all of our abilities and brings out the best in us. There are still many 'Annapurnas' to be climbed in the world--such as protecting our natural environment; decreasing the gap between rich and poor; providing basic necessities for everyone on this planet; and raising our children to live with love and good values.
Impressive black-and-white photos record the women's journey from Katmandu to the summit and back again. This book documents the personal triumphs and tragedies of these women with insights that only a firsthand account can offer. --Kathryn True
Book Description
This is the 20th-anniversary edition of team leader Arlene Blum's best-selling account of the history-making 1978 ascent of Annapurna by the American Women's Himalayan Expedition.
A classic story in the annals of women's achievements, Annapurna was the first account of mountaineering triumph and tragedy to be told from a woman's perspective. A huge critical and commercial success, the original edition sold more than 65,000 copies. Updated now with a new foreword by the author to mark the 20th anniversary of the harrowing ascent, Annapurna is as timely and as riveting today as when it was first published. It is a story of challenge and commitment, told with passion, humor, and honesty.
Customer Reviews:
Gripping and Inspiring Read.......2005-04-27
I don't know how you can't feel the call of the mountains after reading this book. I wanted to jump on the next plane to India. An excellent documentary style book on women's relationships with each other and men, the image women hold of themselves and how others perceive us, and a moving story illustrating that women can do anything. Excellent.
Wow........2003-08-03
This new release of a 20yo book is a winner. I still have my tattered T-shirt proclaiming women should be 'on top,' that I bought in Berkeley way back then, in support of Blum?s fundraising for her 1978 all-woman assault on Annapurna. By proving to the skeptical small mountain-climbing community of men, as well as to the world at large, that women COULD be leaders of expeditions into the high Himilayas, Blum opened the door to a new vision of women's abilities in sports as well as all other areas of life.
Read this book!.......2003-06-03
Arlene Blum's book is the best mountain-climbing book I've ever read, by far, and as the daughter of a climber, I've read quite a few. This book excels because of its author. Her sensitivity, perceptiveness, and concern for others is evident throughout. She's also a good writer with a good story.
We've Come a Long Way..........2002-04-05
This is one of the best climbing narratives I have read. Arlene Blum gives us a glimpse into each climber's strengths and idiosyncracies. We are treated to an intimate look at how each member contributes to the team as a whole.
I enjoyed seeing how each member of the team overcame personal challenges with the mountain, whether it was to climb higher than she ever had before, or to make the summit. Sadly, two climbers met their challenges with the ultimate price -- their lives.
I was impressed with Arlene's leadership ability and organization. By the end of the book, Arlene's growth as a leader was obvious -- she made some difficult decisions (both good and bad) and learned from each of them.
Several times I was annoyed by the Sherpas' insubordination, but perhaps that was due to a clash of cultures, etc. It's wonderful to see how the times have changed in the climbing world today as compared to back then.
Let's Hear It For the Girls.......2002-01-13
"Annapurna: a Woman's Place" leaves something to be desired as a title. This 8,000+-foot monster is not much a "Place" for any life form. It is about as stable as a bowl of jello with hardly a square foot safe from avalanches. It takes weeks (that is after you get as far as Katmandu) of walking to even get there. Annapurna is located in Nepal, near the China border.
Ms. Blum led a diverse 13 woman team on an almost three month adventure on the mountain. The women's ages ranged from 20-50, their nationalities from American to Polish to British (and a few I would just label as "extremely cosmopolitan"); their abilities ranked from zero to professional level climber level.
The author does an excellent job of relating her feelings, problems and insecurities as a leader. I was impressed at the cooperative spirit of all the women and their willingness to discuss emotional problems as they developed. I don't think 13 men would be as cohesive a unit. Of course, a man's team most likely would not have to worry about someone having a love affair with the cook, either!
The black & white climbing photos are excellent and nicely matched with the narrative. You definitely get a sense of the struggle, the cold, and the tensions that are never-ending on such an ambitious climb.
Ms. Blum imported five Sherpas as high-climbing support, hoping to ensure greater safety with their expertise. Was this a successful plan? Yes and no. The Sherpas were for the most part insubordinate (they had little confidence in female decisions) and temperamental. However, when the chips were down, they came through and displayed their much praised stamina and resolve.
The triumph of the two women who summited was a rousing adventure-read and showed that their accomplishment was indeed a victory for the whole team. The two women, one British and one American, that attempted the middle summit a day later and tragically fell to their deaths is still shrouded in mystery. I cannot help but think their decision making abilities were clouded by the high altitude. The risks were far too many, and the chances of success, but slight.
This is a well-told tale, one of best of the high-climbing books. It is slightly marred by some feminine defensiveness, but this was 1978, and equality still had a long way to go!

A WOMAN'S PLACE IS ON TOP..........2006-12-01
This is, without a doubt, one of the best books written about a specific mountain climbing expedition. This particular book is a lyrical and moving account of the the first women's expedition to climb Annapurna in the Himalayas. It provides great detail and insight into their two month odyssey in the mountain and chronicles the challenges that they faced in trying to reach the summit.
The leader of the expedition authored the book and her characterizations of her fellow expeditioners are interesting and engaging. Her description of life on an expedition is filled with a myriad of detail that will enthrall all armchair climbers, as well as climbing enthusiasts. These details make for gripping reading, at times, and her descriptive narrative is always evocative of another time and place. In reading it, one realizes just how far women have come in terms of acceptance in the mountain climbing arena.
Their time spent on the mountain is illustrated by photographs that beautifully resonate with the lyricism of the author's chronicle. The obstacles they overcame, their day to day travails, the bonding and alliances that formed amonst the different members of the expedition, all add to the beauty of the book. The photographs memorialize those moments in time that best evoke the nuances of what it was like on the expedition and, at the same time, give one a sense of the beauty and majesty of the mountain.
The success of the expedition in terms of their having actually reached the summit, however, is clouded by the tragic loss of two of its members on a second, ill-advised attempt to reach the summit. Nonetheless, the quest of the American Women Himalayan Expedition to reach the summit of Annapurna is a testament to courage and commitment. It is also a great read.

Useful Yet Disapointing.......2006-08-06
There's something darker and more sinister about the 2006 Nautical Almanac. Oh sure, the old standards are there-the 57 navigational stars (including Polaris), the Sun, Moon and visible planets. The First Point of Aries and the Greenwich Hour Angles, the Sidereal Hour Angles, the declinations and right ascensions-they're all still present. But there's a certain lack of joie de vivre as it were that somehow makes this edition less satisfactory than previous editions. Use this volume with caution, and let's hope that the U.S. Naval Observatory and Her Majesty's Nautical Almanac Office can return to their winning formula with the 2007 edition.

Book Description
American road racing began just after World War II and quickly blossomed into a movement. The Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC), clubs that became fierce rivals in the 1950s and 1960s, were the principal race promoters. Race tracks popped up everywhere, at first on city streets, then at airports and U.S. Air Force bases, and finally at purpose-built circuits like Road America and Laguna Seca.Although most of the cars that competed in American road racing were built in Europe, an underground movement sprang up of "special builders" who constructed their racers in home garages and small-town machine shops. Some were so homely and slow that only the builders could love them. Others trounced every Ferrari in sight and are now on the wish lists of wealthy collectors the world over.Vintage American Road Racing Cars 1950-1970 is the first book devoted exclusively to American road racing cars of all types and sizes. Hundreds of race cars built in America have never before been mentioned in print, and this book chronicles those and other cars with vintage and modern photography, specifications, memorabilia, and the stories and characters behind each car.About the AuthorHarold Pace's writing and photography has appeared in such magazines as Automobile Quarterly, Class & Sportscar, Excellence, Sports Car International, Vintage Racecar Journal, and others. He lives in Weatherford, Texas. Mark Brinker is a vintage race car enthusiast who has raced at the Monterey Historics. He is a doctor with three published medical textbooks and 70+ published scientific papers. He hails from Houston, Texas.

Only book of its kind.......2006-09-11
The book covers tons of fascinating American racing cars, both common and unique.
My rating docks it one star because there are many obvious errors of relatively common information (such as the wrong year for a driver's Indy 500 win). If the easy stuff is wrong, how reliable can the hard stuff be?
Vintage American Road Racing Cars, 1960 - 70.......2005-07-21
This is a wonderful book full of information and pictures of forgotten (and remembered) race cars from my younger days. These are the Autos I grew up watching run from my vantage point as an SCCA flagman...back in the days when the flag people stood ON the edge of the track, not hidden in some bunker safely out of the way.
The writers / researchers have done a great job of digging up some history on some of the more obscure specials that made the races entertaining and kept us going back "at the barn" on our own Hot rod, Jag powered and framed, plastic bodied, SPECIAL; which did eventually get built, but never made it to Pikes Peak
the aim of the project.
The writers even dug up a bit of info on a couple of cars I remember well, but have not seen mentioned anywhere else; the "Purina Checkerboard Special" as we all called it, and Jim Sanders' "FOMOCO Special", both of which are in my old vintage racing films from Galveston, Mansfield, and Eagle Mountain Lake races.
The book has been read from cover to cover, and will again befor going on the shelf with the other family keepsakes.
A Great Book from Guys Who Lived It.......2005-07-09
I've been racing since the sixties and at one time or another have either owned or raced against a lot of these cars. You can tell by the writing that these guys are not just out to do a vintage car coffee table book, but to write a real, passionate and amazingly complete book that you will wind up buying at least two copes of... one for the library, and one for the shop. It's a terrific book... You can tell that they lived the life and can really tell a story with kindness and humor.

This review was posted by www.victorylane.com, the website of Victory Lane magazine, on November 15, 2004. Victory Lane is a vintage and historic racing news magazine.
"Auto racing of the 1950s and 1960s set the inspiration for today's vintage racing scene. One of the best books on the American Road Racing scene of the 1950s and 1960s is just out in time for the Holidays and the review copy just arrived at Victory Lane Magazine. 'Vintage American Road Racing Cars, 1950-1970' is by noted author, vintage racer and automotive historian Harold Pace and associate Mark R. Brinker. The book covers "The way we were," period rules, racing car manufacturers, hundreds of American Specials of the period, Engine swap specials, American racing kit car manufacturers, American racing engines, racing chassis and a great appendix. It will be great for those new to the sport, those who were there, officials and writers, as well as a terrific holiday gift for any racer. So well written, researched and with great photos, it just has to be the 'Racing Book of the Year'...."
