Great text for teaching service operations management.......2005-05-12
Johnston and Clark is the textbook of choice for teaching service operations management. Its coverage is balanced and its style induces active class discussion. The end-of-chapter cases are short and inviting while losing nothing essential.

Good theory book.......2000-06-19
This is a good theory book although its' title is missleading. Do not expect it to be an organizational diagnosis tool book. It goes through a lot of theory and pardigms and uses case interesting case studies. It is usful if you want to learn the basic OB theories (such as open system model, diagnosis models). The book also gives quite a comprehensive review of most HR areas of interest. But Saying that it bridges the gap between theory and practice is a bit too much. I do not feel as if I can take this book tomorrow morning and implement it in my work. It has potential but again, this is not a tool book !

A Momentous Year at Wrigley.......2007-01-17
Gene Wojciechowski, writer for ESPN and Cub fan, has gone where several have blazed a trail before: writing about the day-to-day events in a season with the Cubs. Having read accounts before of 162 entries of Cubs games (or so), I was pleasantly surprised to find that this book and its premise was greatly improved over similar books. Wojciechowski interviewed over 220 individuals for this book and included a very wide range of stories, great humor and poignant episodes in the life of people associated with the Cubs, be they the struggles of ballplayers with injuries, ballplayers befriending kids with serious diseases, Cub fans and celebrities, Cub employees and weaving these tales around the daily game. This book takes place in 2004, when much was expected from the Cubs but the year unraveled for them in the last quarter of the season: players made mistakes, management made mistakes, the team blew leads and games, announcers were blamed for telling the truth, and the start of a wholesale personnel turnover at the park began. The stories are very enjoyable and Wojciechowski has a terrific sense of humor, and the drama of the last few weeks of the season just adds to the enjoyability of the book - it's definitely worth reading.

My wife turned me into a Cub fan, and now I am a Cub FANATIC. I learned some great tidbits from this, and the style -- a story and chapter for every game day -- let me pick it up and read when I had a few spare minutes here and there. GO CUBS IN 2006!!

Big deal you won a world series on the south side. big deal you went wire-to-wire and tied the Yankees for best postseason record ever. Have you ever seen the mamacitas at Wrigley Field? That stuff makes me mental, real baseball fans know it's all about the atmosphere and the neighborhood. What happnes on the field is secondary, if it even matters at all. Cubs rule. Do you need a list you playa-hating Sox fans? How about Ronnie Woo-Woo, Sluggers, Left Field Bleachers, Sammy Sosa, Murphy's, the hot girls in the luxury boxes, Ernie Banks, Andre The Hawk Dawson, Dave Kingman, Bump Willis, Sammy Sosa, and most of all RYNO! -- Let's play two!
1908 and counting..........2006-01-11
In 2003 the Cubs were 5 outs away from the World Series before their collapse. They ended up losing in 7 games to the Florida Marlins after being up 3 games to 1 at one point. 2004 then rolls around and there is a lot of hype about the Cubs, Sports Illustrated even picked them to win the World Series. In Cubs Nation, Gene Wojciechowski follows the 2004 Chicago Cubs from spring training until the end of the season. Throughout the season you learn about the players and what they're like on and off the field, you get to read all kinds of interesting stories, and you get to witness the classic collapse of the Chicago Cubs.
I'm a huge Cub fan, so when I saw this book I had to read it. I've been a fan of the Cubs my whole life and I've been to Wrigley Field many times. I try to go down to Arizona to catch some spring training games every year, but it doesn't always work out. This was a very interesting book to me. It was fun reading it and remembering everything that happened during the 2004 season. Memories such as trading for Nomar Garciaparra, the Moises Alou urine "scandal", Sammy Sosa's sneeze heard around the world, all of the injuries, and the what-ifs. What if the Cubs pitching staff could have all stayed healthy at the same time for the whole year, what if Sammy didn't injure his back by "sneezing", and what if the Cubs played like they were supposed to and didn't underachieve? The Cubs had the best pitching staff on paper and a pretty good offense, they very well could have won the World Series if they could have just stayed healthy and played like they were supposed to. Like I have said, I've been a Cub fan my whole life and I will always be a Cub fan, through thick and thin. I just hope and pray that they win a World Series in my lifetime.
If you bleed Cubbie blue, this book is for you!.......2005-11-20
Friends affectionately and accurately compare my obsession with the Chicago Cubs to Jimmy Fallon's character in "Fever Pitch", so I was quite excited when "Cubs Nation" was published. Each chapter provides an all-access glimpse of all things Cubs -- everything from the "ball hawks" who shag home run balls on Waveland Avenue to the beer vendors who work the Friendly Confines day after day. The book begins on opening day of the 2004 season and follows the team faithfully through the 162 game schedule to the heartbreaking September collapse and unfortunate failure to make the post-season after watching a World Series berth slip away in 2003 (after the Steve Bartman foul ball debacle in Game 6 and the subsequent nuclear meltdown against the Florida Marlins).
Each chapter offers a brief synopsis of that day's game and any notable stats, but the focus is much broader than that. Through painstaking research, Gene Wojciechowski weaves a rich, timeless tapestry of the stories behind the team. As an avid reader, I typically devour books. However, I savored each well-told story in "Cubs Nation" and took my time reading the book. The writing is excellent, but non-Cubs fans or casual baseball fans might not appreciate the nuances in the same way that a die-hard fan would. However, if you are a die-hard fan, "Cubs Nation" should be at the top of your reading list.

Since 1970 South Africa ended apartheid; Jean-Bertrand Aristide was elected president of Haiti, deposed by military coup then reinstated; San Francisco suffered a major earthquake; and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics dissolved. So it's a good thing Merriam-Webster updated its geographical dictionary to include more than 48,000 alphabetically arranged entries of mountains, lakes, towns, and countries. The third edition had a lot of catching up to do, what with the social, political, financial, and physical upheavals that have taken place since the second edition was published, and the result is a modern and sophisticated reference.

I have used this book as a reliable geographical reference for years and never found it wanting. Both historic and modern places and geographic features are included. I have found everything I needed, from Ash Flat to Pskov.
The appendix contains a thorough table of geographical terms in languages other than English, as well as a useful glossary.
Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary.......2006-07-03
The dictionary was delivered as promised and in excellent condition. I consider Amazon to be a great site and I will order from them again in the future.
Comparison between 1988 and 2001 Editions.......2006-04-20
I had been using the 1988 edition without the need to update my library with the Second Edition until last year. Owing to geopolitical changes since 1988, a more recent edition of Webster's New Geographical Dictionary seemed necessary and the Third Edition was the current version available. The Third Edition contains more current background information (e.g. Union of Soviet Socialist Republics), expanded entries (e.g. Palghat), a subtle, easier-to-read font, sidebars, and cleaner maps (e.g. Palestine). That said, if you want more detailed maps or more concise country profiles, you might be better off checking other resource materials such as National Geographic (Magazine maps) and The CIA World Fact Book respectively. Where this boook retains its advantage is that it contains diacritical notation for the proper pronunciation of the place names.
Simply outstanding.......2004-05-14
This is an excellent reference book that covers a myriad of geographical locations. The maps are also excellent. I highly recommend this book. A previous reviewer claims that the editors made an egregious mistake by including Slovenia as part of the Balkan states. Maybe that person should do a little research because virtually every resource, including Microsoft Encarta, includes Slovenia in the Balkans. And yes, the Ottomans did conquer Slovenia. The Ottomans had to surrender Slovenia, Hungary, and Croatia to the Hapsburgs in 1699. The editors of this book got it right on the money. As for that reviewer -- a little knowledge is a dangerous thing.
Like a Leatherman tool for geography.......2002-09-19
The Merriam-Webster's Geographical Dictionary is quite good desktop reference for matters of geography, and it offers a fairly thorough resource for place names, a bit of history and background, and enough maps (more than 250) to be helpful for the everyday user. It features the customary characteristics of any dictionary such as pronunciation guides, explanatory notes, and a bevy of abbreviations and symbols. The maps are more detailed than I expected, but certainly this text will not supplant anyone's atlas. (And if your atlas is one of the larger ones, then you probably do not keep it at your writing desk.)
This dictionary is especially useful for writers and editors who, perhaps on tight deadlines, need to check spellings and other general overview information or find out where a river, bay, mountain range, or other natural feature is located.
Many small, obscure locations and features are not included, likely because the publisher had to decide between utility and thoroughness, and utility won. And this utility is, in fact, the strength of this publication. One should not purchase it instead of, but in addition to, an atlas. That's why I consider the functionality of this dictionary to be like a Leatherman tool: it will not do everything, but it's the best single resource of its type.

Nothing is more Japanese than the written exam. High school students usually don't get graded on daily work, but instead can study all year for a single test that is close to 100% of their grade. If you fail it, then try again next year.
In "Naruto 5," all the genin (jr. ninja) who hope to advance to chunin (journeyman) must sit a written exam. The catch is, each team passes or fails as a team, using their combined score. If Naruto fails, then Sakura and Sasuke go down too. Naruto's only hope is to cheat, but anyone getting caught cheating is immediately failed, along with his team. A great story, showing Naruto's unique psychological strengths in a tense situation.
Of course, Viz does a great job with this book as with all the Naruto series. My only complaint is that the entire series is in black and white, and the colored parts of the series are also rendered in black and white. I wish they would get as close as possible to the Japanese original, including the colored sections.
