Book Description
The Golden Age of postwar capitalism has been eclipsed, and with it seemingly also the possibility of harmonizing equality and welfare with efficiency and jobs. Most analyses believe the the emerging postindustrial society is overdetermined by massive, convergent forces, such as tertiarization, new technologies, or globalization, all conspiring to make welfare states unsustainable in the future. Social Foundations of Postindustrial Economies takes a second, more sociological and more institutional, look at the driving forces of economic transformation. What, as a result, stands out is postindustrial diversity, not convergence. Macroscopic, global trends are undoubtedly powerful, yet their influence is easily rivalled by domestic institutional traditions, by the kind of welfare regime that, some generations ago, was put in place. It is, however, especially the family economy that hold the key as to what kind of postindustrial model will emerge, and to how evolving tradeoffs will be managed. Twentieth-century economic analysis depended on a set of sociological assumptions that, now, are invalid. Hence, to better grasp what drives today's economy, we must begin with its social foundations.

Welfare states regime bible.......2002-06-09
As in his prior book, "The Three Worlds of Welfare Capitalism" Esping-Andersen once again analyzes the western welfare states' regimes but within its current postindustrial economic changes. Addition to the variables he used in his prior book, de-commodification and stratification, he uses "familization" to explain the regimes. He also reviews many comments he got from his first regime analysis through this book and concludes that his analysis is still valid.
This book's analysis may not fit every welfare states that currently exsist but may provide good ground work? for understanding the welfare states and its current transitions with the burgeoning of globalization.

Most of those who truly appreciate the intricacies of sports and business--and the increasing fusion of the two--are at least somewhat familiar with the way football's Green Bay Packers have built a model sports business during the 1990s. Far fewer, though, are aware of just how much the team's ongoing success has resulted from moves made by its current executive vice president and general manager, Ron Wolf. In The Packer Way: The Nine Stepping Stones to Building a Winning Organization, Wolf and sports journalist Paul Attner tell how this storied NFL franchise recovered from a prolonged downturn with the adaptation of core principles that can also be applied by entrepreneurs and CEOs in startups and major companies. Each of the principles is illustrated with examples drawn from Wolf's Packer experiences and further clarified in chapter-ending point-by-point recaps. Non-fans may not always see relevance in the football references, but those who follow the game will appreciate and enjoy stories such as those about the process of hiring quarterback Brett Favre and coach Mike Holmgren. --Howard Rothman
Book Description
The Packer Way is an instructive book on the business of getting your team to the top--an essential guide for leaders and managers of any organization by the man who rebuilt the Green Bay Packers into Super Bowl champions. Ron Wolf achieved his goal of creating pro football's best team by using the nine core stepping stones he outlines here. Also included in this edition is a new chapter on Mike Holmgren's resignation and the hiring of Ray Rhodes as head coach. Whether you're managing a small start-up company or are the CEO of a major corporation, Ron Wolf's leadership principles will be invaluable to your organization's success.

Be Real.......2005-12-03
These Packers won only one Super Bowl and Wolf considers himself to be a management guru. The year this book came out, The Packers lost a wild card game on the road!!! The next year, Wolf's last, they did'nt even make the playoffs!!! At the end of this book, you'll find out something very interesting about Wolf. He has a severely broken hand-FROM CONSTANTLY PATTING HIMSELF ON THE BACK......
Me, me, me.......2005-02-24
Wolf's primary method is the assertion of will. Yes, he does use technique, but his primary focus and purpose remain me-me-me: I'm doing this. I did this. I kicked some derriers. I inspired, so aren't I good! Yes, I grant he was probably a strong leader, but that should not be confusesd with being a good leader. The focus of a good leader is not the assertion of his/her will, but the good of the organization. Put concisely, the leader should be about us-us-us, and credit for success belongs with us. Wolf seems to apply a self-centered will more than good technique. A good manager is something of an artist: A good artist is economical in his brush strokes. So too, a good manager applies force in small amounts, and deftly. Wolf apparently used more personal force and less technique than we should admire.
Enjoyable as a Packer Fan, not as an Aspiring Manager.......2001-07-08
I read The Packer Way in about a week, just a little each night before bed. It is a very quick read and frankly is a little light on the management insight.
Now being the Packer Fan that I am, it was quite enjoyable to get a 'behind the scenes' view to decisions made within the football organization, and to hear Ron Wolf's rationale for his decision making.
Some of his insights are very unique and he has no doubt culled his leadership skills from many years of experience. I was very impressed by his frankness regarding his mistakes and past failures. It is not by luck that he got to where he was and took a football organization with him. However, for all intents and purposes this really is more of a high level management philosophy that may or may not transfer to other domains or leadership personalities.
Highly Recommended!.......2001-04-13
Sport is an overused metaphor for business, but Ron Wolf, Executive Vice President and General Manager of the U.S. National Football League's Green Bay Packers, surpasses the majority of management experts with his common-sense organizational wisdom. Recounting his turnaround of a languishing football franchise into a Super Bowl winner, Wolf (along with co-author Paul Attner) shows how he used the very principals he illustrates with his compelling sports analogies. While your organization may not compete on a stage as public as the NFL, you can use the same strategies. If these tactics can help the small-market Packers compete with teams from Chicago, New York and Los Angeles, they can certainly help your firm compete as well. We [...] especially recommend Wolf's "stepping stone" strategy of incremental improvement, which seems to us the equivalent of building a solid running game while your opponents lob Hail Marys.
A book about management, not Packer history.......2001-03-14
I've read a number of complaints in previous reviews that Ron Wolf's exposition of his management philosophy in this book "gets in the way" of the history of the Packers of the past decade. Well, here's a clue: this is a book about management which uses the Packers as an example; it is not a history of the Packers. If you read this book, keep that in mind.
That said, the fact that the making of the championship Packer team of 1996 is the example used to explain Wolf's management philosophy does make it more interesting that your run-of-the-mill mangement book.
I've also read some comments from people who don't like the book because they don't like Wolf's style of leadership. Well, different strokes for different folks. Wolf is a tough, hard-nosed, no-nonsense leader, and that may bother some people, particularly those who don't want to pay the price to succeed.
Wolf's legacy as GM of the Packers (he recently announced his retirement from the NFL) is one of success where there had been none for decades. Yet this success did not come easily. This may not appeal to readers who think that fame and fortune can be had without hard work. Such people will not like Wolf's management style and would not like to work for him. If, however, you have the desire to win and achieve, you will appreciate Wolf's description of the manner in which he ran his organization.

Great Advice for the Novice or One Who Does Not Know Better.......2005-05-18
While, as one reviewer states, some of this information is old, does not mean that the information is useless. I am still so surprised to run into martial artist, of all ranks, who do not crosstrain their bodies by adding heavey bag workouts and weight training.
While I do have some minor disagreements, all in all, this book is worth five stars for those who have traveled down the road to increase one's martial skills outside the dojo. Often I find martial artists, at the gym I attend, lazyly working on a heavy bag and in no way increasing their power, speed or stamina. This book may enlighten some of these more lazy or ignorant karateka and provide them some extra tools to train harder and smarter (I do not use the word ignorant here as a pagorative - we all have learning to do).
The chapter on weight trainingg is still needed. Yes, progress has been made in the last 25 years (I grew up in the era that weights slowed you down mindset), but we still need to spread the word that weight training is beneficial for martial arts. I have ran into many people, although less than during my initial training, who do not value any kind of resistance training. Many of them are surperb athiletes - how much more they could excell with this author's advice.
Other chapters are good as well and after one reads this book, I hope they will continue to train and read other texts to increase their martial skills and add to the material presented here.
Powerful advice.......2005-04-01
Miyamoto Musashi, arguably the greatest swordsman who ever lived, advocated quickness and power as superior to strength and speed. Exceptional martial artists in every style demonstrate both quickness and power in all their applications, overwhelming opponents with seemingly little effort. Mr. Christensen's best selling book Speed Training covered the quickness aspect. This outstanding book covers power. As always it is well written, easy to follow, and easily incorporated into your martial training.
Subjects covered include ki power, ancient (traditional) exercises, modern weight resistance training, plyometrics (elastic strength/explosiveness), isometrics (resistance training), dynamic tension, developing a powerful neck, pushups, abdominals, kicking power, punching power, bag work, timing, and defending against power. You will learn how to use proper body mechanics and hip rotation to markedly increase your power. Even Bruce Lee's famous 1-inch punch is explained with sufficient clarity that most martial artists will be able to perform it themselves.
Christensen really knows his stuff. He began his martial arts training in 1965 and over the years has earned 10 black belts, 7 in karate, 2 in jujitsu, 1 in arnis. As the author of 29 books, he has received high praise for his easy-to-read, informative writing style from readers and book reviewers in the United States, France and Russia. He is a retired police officer with some 30 years experience in military and civilian law enforcement.

Improved my punches and kicks.......2003-12-22
I liked this book. I've incorporated several of the exercises over the last six months and have improved in my punching and kicking. My backfists especially have gotten stronger from the lying backfist/tricep extension exercise. My front and roundhouse kicks have really improved power wise and, to my surprise, Ive added some nice muscle in my thighs.
Good book.
Good coverage but training information is old.......2003-02-18
I have to start this review by complimenting the author on his
enthusiasm and depth, his coverage of breaking tricks and his useful coverage of an unrelated topic: fighting strategy. For that, 5 stars. For the propagation of old information, 1 star.
Most of the "strength" training information provided is actually that used by body builders to increase muscle mass: medium high
weight, 10 reps/set, 30 secs rest between sets, train to failure. Powerlifters do not train this way, but narcissists do. The author mentions a few descriptions of strength
training, such as the paragraph on Gracie's weight lifting
and another instance of low reps/high weight/big rest training
program. Also, he mentions fast twitch muscle fiber development, but usually in the wrong training context,
such as endurance training. Fast twitch fibers deliver a high
force output over short durations and are quickly exhausted.
You can't train for endurance *and* power without sacrificing
the other.
The author also presents a forearm exercise routine
to increase grip strength. That's just mean. This makes me doubt that this book was written from personal experience.
He does write one paragraph on brick holding to increase
pinch grip power, but WAY more should be written on
finger and hand strength in a book on power training.
Check out John Brookfield's book on grip training.
Wrist weight and dumbbell air punching is just plain ol' backwards and dangerous. You really want to avoid training
muscles to slow down additional weight. So, you would train
either to throw the weight or have it decelerated by a target
such as a heavy bag. This external deceleration is the entire value of heavy bag training, and the author should know better.
Dumbell punching is the opposite of heavy bag training. To give him credit, the author does mention the use of punching weights into a heavy bag and throwing weights.
The routines provided will increase your power, but not as
efficiently as other methods. The author should
study modern strength and conditioning and update his book.
_Essentials of Strength Training and Conditioning_ by Baechle and Earle . I anxiously await his second edition.
Worth every penny!.......2001-10-18
Buy this book! Its well written, down to the point. This guy knows what he is talking about. And I really like the thing that he looks like an average beer drinking martial arts teacher who spends lots of time with his family. He doesnt claim to be a champion or anything, he is just great!
The knowledge you get from this book and the results you will get from training these exercises are invaluable!!!

Lessons That Change Writers.......2006-11-06
I am a 6th grade LA teacher and have been using this book as a resource to aid in teaching writing workshop. This book was recommended to me by other LA teachers when I took the Puget Sound Writers Workshop over the summer. As with any resource, it needs to be adapted to fit your student's needs.
A writer's workshop how-to.......2006-05-02
I just attended the workshop of the same name. I highly recommend, not only this workbook, but seeing Nancie in person. This binder includes reproducibles and essential workshop mini-lessons.
I am a student featured in "Lessons that Change Writers".......2004-12-20
I attended the Center for Teaching and Learning my 7th and 8th grade years (2001-2002) while Nancie was writing this book. I have a few pieces of my writing in the book itself and I am on the cover; (James or "Jimmy" Morrill). Having been an actual student of Nancie I actually know the mini-lesson well. It truly is the best of the best.
Invaluable.......2004-06-11
Staring down my first year of teaching was daunting enough, let along figuring out how to teach my kids to become good writers. Lessons that Change Writers is an invaluable companion to any English teacher who wants to make real writers out of his students. The book is filled with super-practical lessons that cover every aspect of writing I could have hoped for along with wonderful examples written by Nancie's students. The vast majority of my students finished the year feeling confident about their writing skills; the progress they made was astounding. Students realized that writing was a time consuming process, and I learned that teaching writing in a meaningful way is also a TIME CONSUMING process. To teach in the way Nancie does, it requires a goodly amount of class time and an enormous amount of out-of-class time. However, it was worth it, and this book made me feel like an incredibly competent writing teacher. The rest of my English department will be using this next year. Highly recommended.
Writers Workshop- the missing manual.......2003-05-10
I just discovered this book (we have a copy in our school) and used one chapter to teach short story writing to my 6th graders. Her lesson suggestions and reproduceables taught my students what was missing from their writing and how to improve it. The binder contains many quotes and handouts. They are well designed. For example, by filling out the one on their main character, my students had the germ of a real story and were ready to write. I had to adapt it a little, but the basic teaching ideas and structure was very helpful to me. It helped students make meaningful changes to their own writing.

The Last Word on David Beckham
There is only one David Beckham -- and it's not always the one you read about in the newspapers and magazines or see in the movies. From humble East End London beginnings, the boy with prodigious soccer skills grew up to be one of the most gifted athletes of his generation as well as a sex symbol and fashion icon. Along the way he married Spice Girl Victoria "Posh" Adams, and together they inhabit a celebrity whirlwind of Diana-esque proportions. In
Both Feet on the Ground, David talks candidly about the perils of fame (his wife and son were the targets of a notorious kidnapping plot and he is the subject of almost daily tabloid rumors); the struggle to balance his roles as a devoted husband and besotted father with his globetrotting existence as an international soccer star; the behind-the-scenes stories of his most memorable and heartbreaking (if only he could retake that infamous penalty kick against Portugal in Euro 2004) career moments; the controversy surrounding his first year at Real Madrid after his $41 million transfer from Manchester United, the storied English team he joined as a teenager and led for more than a decade; and, finally, his love of America, where he plans to start a soccer school and perhaps, one day, even play professionally.
Both Feet on the Ground is David Beckham's own extraordinary story, told by the man who knows him best -- David Beckham.

David Beckham.......2007-10-09
This book is a great book if you are a soccer fan. If your not it will still change the way you look at sports stars forever!
This book talks about David Beckham inside and out. It makes you realize how many people take the sport called soccer (football) so seriously and how that can affect a player. It makes you see David as a different person. You see past the reputation and greatness of this wonderful man. It makes you look at him as a person like you and me. He is very humble as he tells his story. You realize how much respect he has for other stars such has Michel Jordan, Ronaldo, Zidane and more.
He talks about his life in soccer and his life outside of soccer. Sometimes I got a little confused because he would go back and forth a little bit but it makes sense if you keep reading. He talks about all the important games and all the games that meant something to him personally. It is amazing how much he remembers from his career at Man U and Real Madrid. He mentions at least 4 games a chapter if not more. I loved that because I love soccer and hearing about what happened.
He talks about his childhood and how much he was committed to playing. The long nights with his dad in the park and then going to watch his dad play soccer with his friends and how he was so happy when he got to play with them, about how he always liked to play against the older kids for a challenge. How the Ridge Way Rovers, his childhood team and his dad and his coaches made him the player that he is today.
He talks about all his time with Man U. He talks about his time with the child development team, how he struggled to get a starting position in the first team when his friends were already starting regularly. How he scored his amazing goal from half field to make people start realizing him. He talks about locker room and the attitude and faces of players and coaches before and after the game.
He talks about his time at England, how he got a red card in France 98 and the reaction he got when he came home to England. He talks about what it means to captain his nation (England).
He talks about his first season with Real Madrid and how that affected him as a player and how different the culture is from his.
He talks about his family, about how much he loves them and how much they mean to him and about all the special moment he's had with them.
Last but not least he talks about the press and paparazzi, how they helped him and how they killed him and his family.
This amazing book will change the way you look at famous people and the way you look at yourself as a person.
A great/Fast Read..........2007-09-10
A great read. David really talks in depth about his early roots in football.
Short and sweet - if you want to know about the world best soccer players....read his autobiography!
Great insight to the world's most well-known athelete.......2006-03-13
The life of David Beckham is often splashed across the tabloids and may or may not be the truth. In this honest autobiography, Mr Beckham details beginning as a boy with a passion for soccer, meeting the girl of his dreams, his role as proud father, and his triumphs and defeats playing for Manchester United and now for Real Madrid. Readers not avid fans of soccer will also find this memoir inspiring.
Beckham, Both Feet on the Ground.......2006-01-21
Are you looking for a great book to read? Then the book for you is Beckham Both Feet on the Ground. This is a fantastic autobiography by one of the greatest living soccer players of all time. You're probably thinking yuck soccer. That's boring. Well you couldn't be any more wrong. This book not only talks about his incredible soccer career, but he also talks about his fantastic stories of his childhood and his wonderful wife and children. This book goes through his whole life story from when he was a little boy in London to his new home in Real Madrid. He is said to be the next big soccer prodigy the world has ever seen. Is it true? He tells many stories of his glories victories to his upsetting losses. This book is an emotional roller coaster. From getting a red card in the world cup to winning the FA Primer league with his beloved club team Manchester United. This book is the number one international best seller. It was easy to understand. It was a lengthy book but don't be intimidated. It was so intriguing that you wont want to put it down. There are also a variety of pictures to help better understand what he is saying. To read more about the wonderful life of David Beckham pick this book up were ever books are sold.
King Of Marketing!.......2005-12-21
It has been many years since this guy stopped worrying about playing soccer, and focused solely in his obligations with sponsors, in posing for photos, etc. He has won absolutely nothing in Real Madrid, a team so engulfed by its millionaire stars that no coach can make it work as an efficient soccer team.
It's useless to read a book about this narcisist guy.

Book Description
The legend of David Beckham -- soccer god, global sex symbol, style icon -- has been celebrated around the world, arguably more than Tiger Woods and Michael Jordan combined. Now, with the publication of his long-awaited autobiography, he is set to conquer the last remaining outpost where soccer is not a national religion: the United States.
In England, where he spent ten seasons leading his storied club Manchester United and his nation to soccer glory, he is so wildly popular that his countrymen voted him the face they'd most want to see imprinted on their money. (Winston Churchill finished second.) And in Spain, within days of his $41 million trade to the Real Madrid club, his new team received two million requests to buy his number 23 jersey.
In Beckham he talks candidly about the pressures of celebrity -- his wife and sons were the targets of a 2002 kidnapping plot; how he balances his roles as a devoted husband and besotted father with his globetrotting existence as an international soccer player; the behind-the-scenes stories of his most memorable career moments, such as the penalty kick against archrival Argentina in the World Cup; the controversy surrounding his move to Real Madrid and the falling out with the man who shaped his career, Manchester United's manager Sir Alex Ferguson; and, finally, his love of America where, like the great Pelé, David can imagine playing out his final seasons.
So much has been written about David Beckham that it's easy to think we know everything about the world's most famous athlete, but only Beckham himself can set the record straight on his beliefs, his dreams, his loves, his fears, and, above all, his sense of who he is. Beckham is an intimate account of an extraordinary life, a life in which, against all odds, he has managed to keep both feet on the ground.
