During the fifty year period from 1936-1986 the modern agricultural revolution occurred, in which, for the first time, science was properly harnessed to the improvement in agricultural productivity. The authors quantify this improvement and identify the work of UK scientists that was seminal to the scientific and technological advances on which the revolution was founded. The topics covered include the advances in animal nutrition (in which the late Kenneth Blaxter was an acknowledged pioneer), animal and plant breeding, soil fertility, weed, pest and disease control, veterinary medicine, engineering (including innovations in tractor design by Harry Ferguson) and statistical measurement. This book describes how these innovations were integrated into the practical business of food production in the UK and discusses the importance of the government in setting the scene for scientific advances.

Intellectual fun fan.......2003-09-23

THE WOUNDED JUNG by Robert C. Smith might be the book that the average reader of Jung's works wanted someone to write, simplifying the concepts that made it so difficult for the tormented Jung to write himself. "By the age of four he had incorporated into his psyche the sophisticated and frightening concept of the underground man-eater dream, closely associated in his case with the burial of the dead." (p. 21). The Notes for the entire book are on pages 179-181. These are so short, it might be ironic that Chapter 3, Note 2 is simply, "Although Jung had never met Miller, he took her fifteen-page report of dreams and visions, published in Geneva in 1906, and expanded it into a book of more than four hundred pages." (p. 180). The key to such authorship is clearly based on having a mind which has been caught in the same web, as is also true on the intellectual side of the picture. "Jung was interested in a variety of philosophers and religious mystics, and upon close examination, one can see that the experiences of these philosophers and mystics paralleled those of Jung. Swedenborg, the great Swedish mystic, clearly engrossed Jung for this reason." (p. 104). Anything which triggered "the divided parts of his own psyche" (p. 2) helped him appreciate "that the approach to the numinous is the real therapy" (p. 3).

A major emphasis on Jung's father is that he "had been unable to secure an academic position. Hence he became the minister to a series of small country parishes." (p. 13). In a world where most people seem condemned to be spectators, Pastor Jung faced those who worshipped each Sunday with his suggestions for staying out of trouble, and he told his son, "Be anything you like except a theologian." (pp. 14, 32, 33).

Jumping ahead in the book to the relationship between Jung and Freud, Smith mentioned a letter on page 34 about a traumatic incident in Jung's childhood, which "Jung kept the memory of the assault secret from all except Freud until old age." (p. 34). A lot more can be learned from the letter from Jung to Freud dated 28 October, 1907, in which Jung admitted that he would "rather not have said" how much he was in awe of Freud. "Actually--and I confess this to you with a struggle--I have a boundless admiration for you both as a man and as a researcher, and I bear you no conscious grudge. So the self-preservation complex does not come from there; it is rather that my veneration for you has something of the character of a `religious' crush. Though it does not really bother me, I still feel it is disgusting and ridiculous because of its undeniable erotic undertone. This abominable feeling comes from the fact that as a boy I was the victim of a sexual assault by a man I once worshipped." Jung was astute in allowing himself to confess this to Freud as a confirmation of many of Freud's beliefs, as well as indicating Jung's trauma from a personal incident that might be generalized politically.

Chapter 2 of THE DESCENT OF MAN by Charles Darwin is called On The Manner of Development of Man from some Lower Form, in which a HISTORY OF GREENLAND by Cranz is quoted on the belief of the Esquimaux "that ingenuity and dexterity in seal-catching (their highest art and virtue) is hereditary; there is really something in it, for the son of a celebrated seal-catcher will distinguish himself, though he lost his father in childhood." Our devotion to intellectual, spiritual, and political leadership might follow genetically, if it is understood that modern people, largely reduced to being spectators, worship anyone who has kindled a spark to seek the ultimate prize. Frankly, Jung's trauma reminds me of "Ernst Roehm, Minister of the Reich, one of the founders of the Nazi Party, and Chief of Staff of the SA." (Max Gallo, THE NIGHT OF LONG KNIVES, p. 2). On December 31, 1933, Roehm had received a letter from Adolf Hitler thanking him for "the force which allowed me to wage the final battle for power," and as leader of the "SA to assure the victory of the National Socialist Revolution on the domestic front, . . . and the unity of our people." (Gallo, p. 7). Roehm was among those killed between Saturday, June 30, 1934, and Monday, July 2. A speech by Hitler on Friday, July 13, 1934 to the Reichstag meeting in the Opera House made Roehm a scapegoat for everything that Hitler had attempted to rid himself of. "The life the Chief of Staff and a certain number of other leaders had begun to lead was intolerable from the point of view of National Socialism. The question was no longer that he and his friends had violated every decency, but rather that the contagion was widespread, and was affecting even the most distant elements." (Gallo, p. 9). As much as this seems ruthless, Smith was able to see this trait as common. "Both Jung and his mother tended to personify aspects of the self. Frequently in his autobiography he refers to the ruthlessness of his mother's No. 2 Personality. But he too, as he acknowledges at the end of MEMORIES (356), could be utterly ruthless at times." (Smith, p. 27). The Retrospect which starts on page 355 of MEMORIES, DREAMS, REFLECTIONS by C. G. Jung pictures himself more as a spectator. "I stand and behold, admiring what nature can do." (Jung, p. 355). "People who see nothing have no certainties and can draw no conclusions--or do not trust them even if they do. I do not know what started me off perceiving the stream of life." (Jung, pp. 355-356). "I was able to become intensely interested in many people; but as soon as I had seen through them, the magic was gone. In this way I made many enemies." (Jung, p. 357).

A brief but substantive, sympathetic C.G. Jung biography.......1998-11-06

Carl Jung's character has taken quite a shellacking of late in new biographies by Richard Noll. In contrast, Smith's book is sympathetic both to Jung's cause--the healing journey toward wholeness he termed "individuation"--and to the deeply disturbed, dissociated psyche that relentlessly drove Jung, both personally and professionally, toward the fulfillment of his destiny: his "daimon." Smith focuses on Jung's relationships with his parents, arguing that it was mainly Jung's ambivalent feelings toward his mother--not his father, as most biographers believe--that most powerfully influenced his peculiar psychic development. Smith also emphasizes the famous Freud-Jung friendship, and its daimonic character, noting that both men had enormous stores of repressed anger or rage which both drove their prodigious creativity and caused serious interpersonal difficulties. Smith's brief biography, despite its limitations, perceptively illuminates in ways others have not the darker side of C.G. Jung--his repressed rage--and in so doing, deepens our understanding of and compassion for the daimonic Dr. Jung, and, hopefully, our own daimonic qualities.

Finaly a real book.......2004-11-20

The book "Muay Thai: Advanced Thai Kickboxing Techniques" by Christoph Delp shows that the author has gained experience in fighting and training in Thailand. The techniques range from basic up to some I haven't even heard of, despite the years I have worked out in Thailand. This book is very good to use additional to the daily work out in the gym. Of course a book can't teach you how to become a good fighter, but even some "professionals" should take the chance to re-read some of the excellent descriptions regarding the shown techniques! Additional to the good text work, the photos are making it easy to follow the different movements. Reading the book and the included interviews plus viewing the photos of the thai-stars and high officials, gives you an impression on how the special atmosphere in Thailand is like. All in all for me this is the only book that was written out of the view and the experiences of someone (a farang) who lived and practiced in Thailand not somewhere else! Excellent work.

I bought this book in Thailand. Everyone in our camp liked the book, because it is real Muay Thai. Great pictures and professional fighters.

I was really disappointed in this book. I don't know who could benefit from it. It's too elementary for semi-advanced students but doesn't cover basics so it stinks for the beginner!
The descriptions are a little vague and the photos do not explain much. There are a few great action shots but nothing you can learn from. There were too many "portrait" photos of Thai competitors.
Overall I did learn a few things but it was not worth the read ...or the money.

While I'm glad there are more books on Muay Thai coming out, enough already with false titles. There is nothing "advanced" about this book. In fact, if you have spent more than a few months in any decent gym, you will find this a pretty boring book

I'm tired of so called instructional books filled with pictures of tourist sites, random pics of Thais standing around and pages of "this is me with my coach". Noe of that is instructional in nature, nor is advice on how to get a visa to Thailand....

The technique is fairly basic, good quality pictures and if you are a beginner you will learn something, but the title is way off the mark

When I first received this book as a gift from my mom, I was amused--it's written by a man! Well, I gotta tell you, battle of the sexes aside, this is an indispensible little volume, and the author sure knows his stuff! When you read the book, you'll see that he interviewed cleaning professionals from all sorts of trades--uphostery cleaners, carpet cleaners, house cleaning professionals and even collectors asking them their tricks and secrets for how to clean it properly. Then he wrote this book, and it's a wonderful little treasure to have around the house--realtors should give it out, it's so handy!

For instance: Did you know that there is a difference between "dry clean" and "dry clean only"? And that dry cleaning down items makes the feathers brittle and can ruin your item? That the best way to clean your disposal is with a 1/2 cup of baking soda and ice cubes? That what your mother told you is true--citrus peel really is good for the disposal?

You'll find all of these tips and 1994 others in a very reader friendly alphabatized format with little tips, tricks and warnings in the margins added in the margins. Honestly, there's literally nothing in your home that you can't find a way to clean better, easier or faster with this book. From Furs to Fountain pens, Down to Telephones, it's in there. As a full time home maker, I use this book twice as much as I do Mendlesonson's Home Comforts--that's how handy the information is.

It's a great buy and will save you a lot of grief, grime, and Googling! And along with Bridal Bargains, it makes a great engagement gift. Five stars for value and practicality.

This is a great book. If you've dreaded cleaning and didn't know where to start, this book inspires you, helps you organize yourself and puts cleaning in perspective. It should be handled as you do any other work...by organizing yourself. It helps you form a method and a routine which you must get accustomed to after which cleaning will not be a 'chore'. You will become a professional at it and feel happy to be in a clean home.

This is a true story of a teen who was raped. I really enjoyed reading her life story. I felt like I was actually there in her life. She had a wonderful relationship with her mother and her best friends. Nancy was a girl who loved life. The ending of the book was very sad, especially when Nancy became very sick and suffered a lot.

i am 20 years old and a victim of date rape at age 12. I am reading this book now and only half way through and im in tears, in tears because i ave been where she is in her darkness and it has taken me 8 years to over come most of my fears and my ticks with men.. as far as the book being shameful.. hardly... i have 2 sisters under 15 and i dont care if beatrice sparks invented this story after a bad date or if no such "nancy" existed. because i was nancy 8 years ago.. i was lucky enough not to have been infected with HIV but girls her age need to be warned and they need to know that no matter how old or how sweet every body is capable of hurting them. to be careful and to always trust in their parents because for all they know they were a victim like nancy and myself and thousands of other under age girls and even thousands of age women.. this is a tragic honest tale of all that we have been through but were to afraid to share.. i would recommend this book to anybody with eyes..there is truth in everypage.. please read this book and every other book edited by beatrice sparks and have your children read them too.. i wish i would have read it before it happened to me.. thank you nancy for being so strong and giving millions of girls like you courage to fight.

Shameful.......2007-01-06

Beatrice Sparks is the author/editor of a serious of "anonymous" teen diaries. They are meant as "warnings" to children. In fact, they are not based on real diaries and the only one that actually was, she used about 10% of the journal entries and added a Satanic theme which horrified the family.

Now I am aware that children should be taught such things as drugs are bad, teenage pregnancy is not preferable, don't kill yourself etc. However, I take offense when presented in this manner. Children learn best from the truth not extreme propaganda. I also take offense that many libraries (especially school libraries) list this book as non-fiction, when in fact it is a work of fiction.

Quinn's tome intellectually addresses the macro-economic trend of moving manufacturing, especially business-to-business durable goods, to a strategic enterprise model which instead of selling goods, will sell services that imbed the product that they manufacture. The intensity of Quinn's work is formidable! It has the same "feel" of a Peter Drucker work. ...which is a compliment to any author. This is not light reading....but it is worth every minute of effort
