Book Description
Myths, stories, and folklore are part of the fabric and life of all organizations, enabling us to understand, identify, and communicate the character of the organization - its ambitions, conflicts, and peculiarities. Drawing on extensive fieldwork of storytelling in five organizations, this book argues that stories open valuable windows into the emotional and symbolic lives of organizations. By collecting stoires in different organizations, by listening and comparing different accounts, by investigating how narratives are constructed around specific events, by examining which events in an organization's history generate stories and which ones fail to do so, researchers can gain access to deeper organizational realities, closely linked to their members' experiences. In this way, stories enable researchers to study organizational politics, culture, and change in uniquely illuminating ways, revealing how wider organizational issues are viewed, commented upon, and worked upon by their members. The book's first part develops the theory of storytelling by building on various approaches, including narrative, folkloric, ethnographic, symbolic, social constructionist, and psychoanalytic, while the second offers a set of four studies which make use of stories in exploring particular aspects of organizational life.

Book Description
Shrimps are subject to great consumer demand in the United States. However, more than #1 billion worth of shrimp is now imported; more than twice the amount produced domestically. Domestic shrimp production, mostly from the trawler fleet in the Gulf of Mexico, is thought to be at its maximum sustainable yield of 91,000 MT (heads-off). Increased production of shrimp in the U.S. through mariculture has been motivated by the increasing demand for this product.
The biology of penaeid shrimp and lack of technology for their culture present special problems in fisheries science, reproductive biology, endocrinology, nutrition, pathology, culture science and future research. The purpose of the Frontiers of Shrimp Research symposium was to assess the status of shrimp research in these areas and to further foster the scientific collaboration vital for significant research advances. The participants included representatives of the science funding agencies, the mariculture industry and representatives of both the scientific research and science policy communities.
The subject matter should be of interest to a variety of readers. Advanced undergraduate/graduate students, mariculturists and research workers will find this volume both interesting and informative.

Behavior Modiciation: Basic Principles.......2000-08-07
This is an excellent book that gives detailed information and specific examples of behavior modification. It is usefull for anybody working with infants up to adults in either maintaining or increasing positive behavior or decreasing negative behavior. The quizzes are extremely helpful in assuring that the content of the book is understood. I would recommend this book to anybody in the social service field working with youth especially in order to better deal with behavior and understand what motivates us to do the things we do.

Book Description
Deep democracy, the inherent importance of all parts of ourselves and all viewpoints in the world around us, is introduced as the concept that fascilitates conflicts in relationships, communities, and the world. Skills and attitudes needed in situations of chaos, attack, transformation and conflict are provided, and examples from all over the world illustrate the theory.

A New Perspective.......2002-01-22
Dr. Mindell has provided an interesting and inclusive model for leadership that takes into account many levels of individual and group psychology. This book goes far beyond, or should I say far deeper, than most of the "pop" nonsense on leadership.

Proper words in their proper places--and a good many improper ones, too! If the OED's many obsolete definitions tend to be the most enjoyable--shuff is dialect for "shy," dolt was once upon a time a verb as well, meaning "to befool"--everyday idiosyncrasies still abound. But, for instance, occupies nine columns of text, and who would wish a single line away? There's also the sublime pleasure of trawling through the sea of relevant quotations. The OED's initial team of "voluntary readers" was asked to cite as many phrases as possible for both archaic and ordinary terms. None seems to have found this remotely arduous, and we now reap the >ubiquitous ("present or appearing everywhere; omnipresent") rewards. This huge venture is a labor of lore, love, and good humor. One caveat: If you skip over the Historical Introduction, you'll miss learning about the Unregistered Words Committee, and overlook the wry warning, "If there is any truth in the old Greek maxim that a large book is a great evil, English dictionaries have been steadily growing worse ever since their inception...."
Book Description
The Compact Edition of the OED reproduces micrographically, in a single volume, the complete text of the highly acclaimed Second Edition of The Oxford English Dictionary. In this edition, nine pages of the original fit onto just one. This volume comes in a slipcase with a magnifying glass and a new user's guide which explains the conventions of the OED.

Warning: not for eyes over 50.......2007-09-27
You can read the other reviews regarding the text, which, being the Oxford English Dictionary, is the best English resource there is. Sadly, I can read a phone book, I can read maps, I can read the fine print at most websites, but I cannot read this version of the OED with the supplied magnifier. I need to use a second hand held magnifying glass with the supplied magnifier to see the smaller fonts. This will probably go to my nephew, and I will either save for the 20 volumes or do without--or wait till they have the wisdom to go to 2 or 3 volumes for people with aging eyes.
It depends........2007-09-26
I don't have this edition, but I have the older 2-volume edition. In the 80s the latter, normally $100 retail, was being offered for $20 as a premium with membership in Book of the Month Club. I believe this was just before the new edition was published, and the price was in effect for clearance. Nonetheless, I joined the club just to get it, and $20 plus the minimal required purchase of a few books from BotMC was a fantastic deal.
As an individual who is simply interested in words, I greatly enjoyed having the older edition of this authoritative source. The legibility of the small print, aided with the included magnifier, was acceptable for myself as an infrequent and casual user. I assume that the print in this 1-volume edition would be smaller.
This edition is worth considering for a professional or library that needs it but doesn't want to use the CD-ROM edition. However, for an individual like myself, the price for either this edition or CD-ROM is too much.
Also, I live in Chicago, and the Chicago Public Library has a subscription to the online OED and allows access at home for CPL library card holders. Other major public libraries probably have the same arrangement. Before buying this, check with your own library.
Very slow.......2007-09-09
I'm at the ABs, and I still can't get a grip on the plot. Characters enter, are introduced in exhausting detail and then disappear again! Very frustrating. The only time an old character shows up again is in another's history!
Perhaps things will become clearer when we meet Oxford, English or Dictionary -- clearly three key figures.
I'm down with OED.......2007-06-08
The compact OED came in perfect condition, with all the heft and bulk a real dictionary deserves. A must have for the linguaphile that craves information but is unable to house 20 volumes of goodness. Be prepared to squint and squeal!
Der beste Kauf.......2007-04-06
Dieser Schatz ist obligatorisch zu erwerben von jedem Amerikanist; Anglist und Studenten die viel mit der englischen Sprache zu tun hat (also auch z.b. Politikwissenschaftler, BWL etc.).

Not a typical Manga review.......2006-03-18
I'm reviewing this manga book on the basis of its appropriateness for use in a classroom. Being a middle school teacher, I find it hard to interest my students in reading. However, many of my students are interested in manga. I purchased this book since many of my students are also very interested in video games. The premise of Gamerz Heaven is that a young high schooler named Kaito receives a beta version of a game called Gamerz Heaven. The game sucks Kaito in on a mission to save the Navigator, a young boy, from monsters in the video game world. However, the video game world has repercussions in reality-if you die in the video game, you disappear from the real world, etc. The story is moderately interesting. Being a fan of video games, I like the stereotypicalness of Kaito as a high schooler who lives for his video games. This book is rated age 13+, which is appropriate for violence and some mild language/name calling. Since I teach younger students, I just went through the book and whited out the offending language and replaced it with non-offensive language (yes, I know, that's censorship, but you try telling that to concerned parents!). I'm not a great judge of artwork, but Gamerz Heaven is drawn well and the story is intruiging enough for me to consider buying volume two. For parents of younger children, though, I would highly recommend reading it first before allowing a child younger than 13 read it. For parents of video-gaming children, this could be a way to interest your child in reading rather than gaming 24/7. If you do plan on using this in a classroom, just make sure that you have a good book check out system so that it does not disappear.
Gamerz.......2005-10-20
Gamerz Heaven truly is a creation of Maki Murakami, the creator of Gravitation. It takes on the art style of the last few manga's of Gravitation, and alot of the Gamerz Heaven characters look like those of Gravitation. (Such as Rage who looks like Yuki) The storyline is exciting, which feature the main character getting sucked into the world of his video game and being forced to save Nata, a character with the power to transport individuals from the game to the realworld. Only problem, if something gets destroyed in this world the real world is affected, and if he dies, he truly does die.
The character designs are nice, as I said, they look like the characters from Gravitation toward the end of the manga series. In any case the characters are really beautiful, especially the child Nata and Lost Soul, who become the cutest things in the book.
The humor is still there, with random drawings of over-the-top scenes. And, for non-yaoi fans out there, its a perfect manga.

A great manga!.......2005-09-23
While it isn't Maki Murakami's usual genre, it's just as good as Gravitation. It isn't yaoi, but like Gravitation had it's remixes, Gamerz Heaven has it's Doujinshi by Maki that is yaoi. :p So if you don't like yaoi, the manga is great for you, but if you like yaoi there are doujinshis at JPQueen under Maki's name.

Gamerz Heaven sort of attracted my attention earlier in the year, but I was short on money, so I didn't buy it. Go buy it. Now. This is a really good story that's not as popular as it should be. The story's neat, the art's nice, and it's engrossing.
Note: As everyone else says, this isn't what I'd classify as yaoi manga. The affection between Nata and Kaito isn't really what's considered yaoi... In fact, I sort of consider it a big brother, little brother thing. However, Amazon'll give me yaoi manga reccomendations for a while after viewing this though...
NOT Shonen-ai.......2005-03-26
First off I'd like to say this is not Shonen-ai because A: Nata is a computer program. B: It looks that Kawashima "Likes" Kaito. O.K. Now that I got that out of the way I have to say this is a great manga. The main character, Kaito, reminds me of myself. A videogame driven guy who would rather play videogames then do anything else. My friend bought it for me because she took one look and sayed "That's ___". So buy this if you like Action and Videogames.
