Book Description
The past decade has seen a surge of pricing innovations in the U.S. telecommunications industry. This book systematically reviews recent innovations in the economic theory of pricing and extends results to the conditions that characterize telecommunications markets. The authors develop and illuminate the normative theory of pricing--with its objectives of social welfare, economic efficiency and fairness--and compare it with the practice of business and regulators.
Book Description
Every business has its own particular kind of corporate culture. Before you sink a lot money, time, and effort into a reengineering project, do you know if your organization would benefit from such a program? The Reengineering Alternative explains how companies can develop effective improvement plans based not on some cookie-cutter notion of change management, but upon that organization's unique strengths and corporate objectives. This book will be especially valuable to managers who recognize the need for organizational change, but either haven't found an appropriate improvement program or can't fit an outside program into the budget.

Book Description
The term computation gap has been defined as the difference between the computational power demanded by the application domain and the computational power of the underlying computer platform. Traditionally, closing the computation gap has been one of the major and fundamental tasks of computer architects. However, as technology advances and computers become more pervasive in the society, the domain of computer architecture has been extended. The scope of research in the computer architecture is no longer restricted to the computer hardware and organization issues. A wide spectrum of topics ranging from algorithm design to power management is becoming part of the computer architecture. Based on the aforementioned trend and to reflect recent research efforts, attempts were made to select a collection of articles that covers different aspects of contemporary computer architecture design. This volume of the Advances in Computers contains six chapters on different aspects of computer architecture.
Key features:
- Wide range of research topics.
- Coverage of new topics such as power management, Network on Chip, Load balancing in distributed systems, and pervasive computing.
- Simple writing style.

Book Description
From a master, a comprehensive guide to preserving skins and pelts.
Customer Reviews:
Not for survivalists.......2005-11-19
This book is written by a professional book writer, not a tanner. He seems to be getting most of his information from hide tanning kits and some tanning he has done himself. Since the book has no bibliography or footnotes, it is hard to say where he gets his information. He does refer to a Bruce Rittel of 'Rittel's Chrome Tan Products' a few times, as if having consulted with him.. He doesn't appear to have worked with or interviewed any professional or advanced amateur tanners along the way while writing this book.
There are several pictures in the book of someone skinning, fleshing and working with hides. I don't know if this is the author or not. It could be more than one person as the face is usually not visible. From the text, the author describes his working with hides, but I do not get the impression that his work with hides is extensive.
He refers to the 'Native American' several times, as if to suggest that they were some sort of authority on hide tanning. This would be absurd because when the English landed at Jamestown in 1607, they were much more advanced than the 'Native American' in tanning hides. The only method that he connects to the 'Native American' is the buck skin making process that he shows.
He gives some good drawings and pictures of how to make some of the tools needed for skinning, fleshing, stretching and so forth. This is perhaps the most instructive part of the book. There are also pretty detailed drawings and explanation of how to skin animals. There are some pictures that look rather gruesome. (Well, if you can't stand to look at the pictures, you had best forget about tanning hides anyway.)
He makes an attempt to explain some of the chemistry, but it is weak. I would have preferred a more in-depth discussion of the chemistry involved. There seems to be some gaps and some puzzling things. He tells you to get ph paper testing strips, but doesn't give details on what they are, how to use them, or what 'ph' means. A salinometer is also necessary, he says. So where did the 'Native American' get his salinometer and his 'ph' paper strips from? And how did the 'Native American' use them? The title 'Ultimate' is a bit presumptuous.
He discusses 'bark tanning' a bit, but more so it seems to discourage the practice rather than to describe how to do it. He ultimately has you grinding the bark through a coffee mill. (I guess the 'Native Americans' didn't have leaf shredders.)
He does give some formulas for mixing your own tanning chemicals. I think it might be hard to buy some of those chemicals, especially with all the regulations these days. But it is good information to have.
The only method he gives in the book that might not require you to run to the store or the mailbox, is the 'brain tanning' method, or making 'buckskins'. The same method is described in the Foxfire 3 book. Foxfire describes making different furs and skins while this book only discusses deer skin. Foxfire has more pictures, also, and doesn't mention 'native americans'. (Foxfire 3 was evidently written before Political Correctness had permeated everything.)
I was hoping for a book that would tell me how to tan leather without the chemical companies, and Tandy, Cabella's, and Rittel getting involved. More self sufficient, in other words. This book is pretty much a disappointment in that area.
This book lacks the heart and soul of a craftsman. It is a lot of technical information. But I don't feel inspired to go out and tan a hide, and I don't feel that I have been given enough knowledge to feel confident that I could tan a hide if I wanted to.

Customer Reviews:
Odd for a manners book to be offensive, but it is........2005-08-16
Ms. Post's book is downright offensive in its discussion of children.
For example, Ms. Post takes for granted that children (and not adults) must rise when adults (and not children) enter a room. In certain circumstances, anyone should rise on anyone's entrance, in other situations only if the person or his office warrants unusual respect, and I had hoped to find in this book guidance on distinguishing one from the other. Instead, I got what I can explain only by attributing to Ms. Post the prejudice that every adult is ipso facto morally superior to any child. If she came by that view honestly, she must have been peculiarly blest in the adults she's encountered--and peculiarly cursed in the children.
Nice compact book, but nothing special.......2001-11-01
Solid book with the basics of etiquette for various situations. But I didn't find this book special or with anything that stood out as especially useful. Nevertheless, a nice compact guide.

High Spy Review .......2006-03-24
Thaxton was recently enlisted in the Union Army when his regiment was called to the battlefield. He barely had any skill or practice with a gun so he was forced to pick up the techniques along the way. His generals showed him the way and put him in the most dangerous job of all - the aerial observations. The objective of aerial observation was to simply map down enemy forces from the air view. Thaxton began as a private and was promoted to Lieutenant within weeks for his amazing skill and accomplishments. Thaxton was in the air on his hot air balloon mapping down enemy lines when all of the sudden the Confederates made a surprise attack and forced the Union lines to retreat leaving Thaxton behind enemy lines. Thaxton was completely astonished to find himself being lowered from the air and into Confederate hands. Throughout the rest of the story, Thaxton was imprisoned and escapes with a few others and journeys back to the Union lines. This story was vividly described and well written, great characters, and an excellent plot.
This book was very well written and adventurous from its details and descriptions of actions occurring throughout the story. The battles and fights were well described so I could imagine exactly what was going on. The imagery was designed perfectly just so the reader could be aware of what was happening. The first battle of the book was set in a field but later changed to the woods so even the settings changed from scene to scene which was a twist.
Characters in this book were described very well also. They physical traits and how they acted were both clearly stated for all characters. That showed me what to expect out of each and every character for what they might do later on in the story. Given how one character acted I guessed what he would do next such as Thaxton would run away but the author always changed it so this time Thaxton didn't run away. Some characters like Red, were described as being dangerous and clever so I assumed he would come up with a plan of escape and that was exactly what he did. Red constructed the plan for escape with Thaxton and a few others.
The plot to this book was obviously thought out for a while by the author as he showed it in his work. The plot was about a kid that gets captured and escapes from a prisoner of war camp and tries to get back to his lines but encounters several problems along the way. One of these problems is that he meets his cousin that looks exactly like him. His cousin takes Thaxton as an enemy although his cousin is a double spy and works for the Union and the Confederates. Thaxton's cousin challenges him to a duel and Thaxton wins by pure luck. As Thaxton continues on his journey to his Union lines, he meets his dying uncle. His uncle leaves Thaxton with his extremely large estate and fortune.
High Spy was a very good book that I found interesting and exciting. The author kept me guessing what would happen next after every page. This book had an amazing plot that was unique, unlike any other book I've read before. I would recommend it to all readers that favor action and adventure.

Excelent.......2006-01-01
With the introduction of a new character, the entire Spy High universe gets an overhaul. We learn about another school, social roles begin to change and the truth about Johnathan Deverauxe is revealed to us. Also, the elements of scinece fiction really take off here. A.J. Butcher said, "The best part of writing science fiction is that if you need something, you can just make it up." We continue to see teh change of the kids as they become young adults. This book starts their second and last year of training.
Spy High Mission 4: The Paranoia Plot. Review by Eli.......2005-06-08
I have recently read the Paranoia Plot, by AJ Butcher. I think it was an amazing book. This was about the Bond Team, a team of teens at Spy High, who are in training to carry out the will of Mr. Devraux, the founder of Spy High. In the last book, Jake's girlfriend and teammate Jen falls in the line of duty, in this case stopping a gang leader named Talon. The team gets a new member, Bex, and ... well, if I said anything else, I would give away the story. It was very well writen (no mistakes), and it had a capturing plot. When Bond Team found out the plot, I felt what they felt. I laughed with Bex at Eddie's attempts to win her heart. I felt relieved when the good guys finally won out. It was a wonderful book, and it held my interest to the end. I gave it five stars, and I think if you read it you will agree that it earns every one.
Like a video game inside a book!.......2005-01-26
Devereaux Academy is a top secret training school for young secret agents. But the kids call it Spy High. The story opens with the Bond Team -- Lori, Ben, Jake, Eddie, and Cally -- returning to Spy High from a break, yet still reeling from the death of their teammate, Jennifer at the hands of Dr. Frankenstein on a previous mission. For that reason, they don't exactly accept Bex, their new recruit with open arms. It's not her spiked green hair, or body piercings, or even her big attitude that makes them suspicious. It's the sabotage of Eddie's SkyBike during practice. And the booby trap that springs up for Lori and Ben in the Gun Run training scenario. Then Cally's cyber-cradle malfunctions nearly suffocating her. When the Bond Team members find out that Bex lied about her background and she's sneaking around the campus late at night, they think she might be a double agent. They take their concerns to Senior Tutor Elmore Grant but he dismisses them. The Bond Team are on their own. Not only do they have to get to the bottom of the mischief at Spy High, but they are just as determined to uncover Bex's true identity.
"The Paranoia Plot" is the 4th book in the Spy High series. While it's helpful to have read previous books in the series, it's not necessary to the understanding of the story or characters. This book is loaded with fast-paced action and enough plot twists to keep thinking readers on their toes. With fun, futuristic props like shock blasters, space-spheres, holograms, and clones, Spy High reads like a video game inside a book.

Provides a complete readiness assessment framework.......2001-10-01
The heart of this book is a readiness framework that blends assessment, strategy and tactics and project planning. The focus is on business and customer value.
I like the way the book starts, with a look at the big picture, defining your goals, and complete look at all stakeholders. The beginning also introduces e-business models, the readiness framework itself and a quick sanity check to test your readiness.
This is followed by a more detailed look at the "eBiz Readiness! Framework" and its major parts: stakeholders, components and enablers. Also addressed are knowledge management, trust and technology, all of which are interwoven into the fabric of e-business. I especially liked the framework metrics, which include benchmarking, customer and business metrics, and how to manage the metrics as indicators.
What makes this book practical is the map given to applying the framework for implementation of e-business processes and systems, and once implemented, how to effectively manage using an evaluation framework. The evaluation framework covers both small- and big-business perspectives in the form of stakeholder assessments. Also addressed in detail are trust services (perhaps the cornerstone of e-business), security, and related issues.
Another aspect of this book that I liked very much is the coverage of the e-business stakeholder model and governance, which spans topics such as globalization, socioeconomics and your defined market. This sets the book apart from those that seem to focus on technology without a regard for the bigger picture.
This book is an invaluable resource to both business planers and IT because it balances the business and technical issues, both of which are addressed, in assessing e-business readiness.
An e-Business Bonanza.......2000-12-29
Finally, someone has started to 'de-mystify' what e-business is! The foundational material yields a discerning insight into the concrete necessities of e-business whether large or small. The stakeholder model details what components are needed and exactly how the elements of e-business fit together, and also what you need to be successful - the book gives you proven, effective yardsticks to measure where your business is and where your business is going! An excellent read! I highly recommend it. Jutla and Craig are groundbreakers!

Book Description
Much literature is available discussing the concept of globalization, but now it is time for some practical advice on what it actually means for an organization. Globalization: The internal dynamic and Globalzation: The External Pressures can be read independently or as a complement to the other. The aim of both books is to present an all-round dissection and a one-stop source of latest thinking on the topic of globalization. The focus is both on issues that arise within the internal workings of an organization and on the pressures that come to bear from outside.
Globalization - The External Pressures brings together a picture of how organizations are responding on a macro scale in terms of their interfaces with an increasingly global environment.
Topics covered in the book include:
- The global economy (world trade flows, foreign and direct investment etc.)
- The global labour market
- The global information market (how globalization has been fuelled by the internet revolution)
- The role of a corporate parent in a multinational business
- The management of global partnerships and alliances
- The pull towards globalization from the market and customers (including the problems of marketing products and services globally)
- The centrifugal forces of global and local tension
