Driven: How Human Nature Shapes Our Choices
ASIN: 0812931971
Release Date: 2000-11-07 |
Book Description
In this remarkable book, Nigel Nicholson takes a fresh, novel, and penetrating look at human nature and why we do what we do at work.
* Why we let one piece of bad news drive out 100 pieces of good.
* Create the "us versus them" problem by immediately classifying people as winners and losers.
* And think we can "tough things out," ignoring clues of disaster staring us in the face.
The explanation of these, and hundreds of other perplexing, frequently unproductive ways that people think and act at work lies in understanding the emotional and behavioral hardwiring that is the legacy of our Stone Age ancestors.
Nigel Nicholson is at the forefront of the exciting -- some would say radical -- new field of evolutionary psychology. While we have to cope with the modern world and the complexities of working in organizations, we do so with brains hardwired for Stone Age realities. Nicholson uses the ideas of evolutionary psychology to challenge many conventional beliefs about human nature with a more realistic picture of what motivates people and shapes their thoughts and actions at work.
We constantly hear that there is no limit to what we can do and who we can be. By force of will and the exercise of our great intelligence we can reengineer organizations and always make rational decisions. Politics, turf wars, rumor, and gossip can be eliminated. Status and sex differences can count for naught.
It's time to get real and end this kind of utopian daydreaming. Evolutionary psychology shows that we are animals with a highly engineered, genetically encoded design for our bodies and our minds. Nicholson's insights from evolutionary psychology will intrigue and inform those looking to understand our instincts and manage them with skill. Several of the highly practical realizations he provides readers include:
* Why we create problems for ourselves by imagining that the differences between the sexes or their effects can be eliminated.
* How inborn differences in temperament make people either fit or unfit for leadership positions and why organizations get the kind of leaders they deserve.
* Why gossip and rumor are not destructive forces but the lifeblood of communication in the world of work.
* Why there is a limit to the size of organizations as integrated communities, best described as "the rule of 150."
Nigel Nicholson's brilliant and practical
Executive Instinct enables you to manage with -- not against -- the grain of human nature.

Customer Reviews:
Every Manager Should Read This!.......2003-12-30
Many managers excel at the minutiae of their technical disciplines but don't understand what motivates or how to manage people. This book would help them do so if they are willing to listen.
Nicholson takes the now-familiar idea of the Stone-Age mind in a modern world and shows its implications for social (group and organizational) behavior. The book resonates with what I have felt and seen in large corporations. It explains well the collision between the corporate desire for economy and messy human nature, the mistakes that many corporate leaders make and why people behave as they do in groups.
A smart manager will use this information to see and act upon the interactions between himself, his people, his colleagues and his bosses differently. This well-written, well-reasoned book is a refreshing change from the vogue of manuals of cold methods for managerial efficiency. I recommend it highly.
Change with the Change!.......2002-09-25
The evolution of mankind, nevertheless had been a `Stone Age' with an animal behavior, which has been a hard fact and Nigel Nicholsan just reminds that. The book's eight-fold plan suggest getting the most out of it instead of building up individuals to polish their behavioral patterns. The brief sum up of human relationship and personality development go hand to hand to jumpstart the leadership qualities optimistically and psychologically get the human nature work in favor to get the positive plus. Nigel gives an insight to wisdom ways of behavioral patterns as to why humans drive out 100 plus with just one bad happening. Evolutionary psychology (EP) is the current debate where human nature varies from genetics to genetic and organizations today need not act on instincts but go ahead with nature attributes. Being an Instructor in Business segment, Nigel has ways and suggestions for Organizations to scratch off the negatives, block off the darker sides. The book says much on Leadership communication and organization as one big community keeping in tune to balancing sex differences, nature barriers and positively focusing on rumors and gossips as lifeblood of communication at work place. Nigel suggest ways to rule off tough times at workplace n avoid disasters. The book is on programming the mind with Executive Instincts to manage with human nature which is quite natural n head way to tolerance to manage erroneous zones which would rather than create a block for learning abilities. I recommend this book especially very necessary to enhance Leadership qualities and adopt the IQ, EQ, SQ and win a `win chance' with EP - A must follow up of the plans of Nigel Nicholsan, Indeed! Sure Pick.
A Good Read!.......2002-09-18
If you've ever thought that your boss is a Neanderthal (or you've been accused of being one), take heart - it's perfectly natural. Nigel Nicholson reminds us that we are, after all, only animals working with the same Stone Age minds we've had for millions of years. Once you accept this premise, you're ready to incorporate evolutionary psychology into your management techniques and get human nature to work for you, rather than against you. Despite the fact that some sections fail to dig beneath the superficial, we from getAbstract recommend this book to anyone in search of a fresh perspective on management.
Communities of 150, Stone Age Minds, and Other Tid-Bits.......2001-07-26
I liked this book because it flies in the face of conventional wisdom about human relations and organization, and because it provides an alternative perspective on leadership: recognizing that humans have an "animal" nature that is "hard-wired", and that if we accept that rather than trying to "program" individuals, we will be more likely to create a vibrant organization.
The author's "eight point plan" for capitalizing on creative spirit while minimizing irrationality could not be further from the current practices of most government and corporate activities:
1) Watch how you manage errors and mistakes. Zero-tolerance cultures drive out exploration and prevent learning.
2) Train your managers to create a climate of psychological freedom in which curiosity is valued.
3) Give people space to express their emotions and time for reflection.
4) In areas of high information flow and complex decisions, don't trust your instincts. Use decision-making aids and statistics...
5) Make sure that the climate is one in which diverse expertise and opinions get a real open airing.
6) Question your own assumptions and conventional reasoning before making any important decision.
The entire book is valuable, and the above is but a glimpse of some its value. Especially interesting to me was the author's conclusion that the reason most organizational communications programs fail is because they are trying to control behavior rather than create community--like many of the more intelligent writings on military doctrine being more important that military communications, the author makes a compelling case for using communications to create informal shared standards and expectations rather than to micro-manage individual behavior.
The footnotes are especially worthwhile, and serve as a tour of various relevant literatures, all very pleasantly up to date.
The Consilience of Evolutionary Psychology and Management.......2001-01-29
E. O. Wilson (1998) promoted the notion of a necessary consilience between academic disciplines. Consilience was described as the "unity of knowledge" or the "snapping together" of ideas. The book "Executive Instinct: Managing the Human Animal in the Information Age" is the consilience point between the fields of Evolutionary Psychology and Management from the Industrial/Organizational Psychological perspective. This lucid interface between these fields lends itself to just that--an interface. It does not contain a sufficiently detailed background of evolutionary theory, nor does it contain a sufficiently detailed review of management theories. What it does contain is an applied theory of management towards "managing instinct with insight." The thesis of the book is immersed in the idea that many of our societal inefficiencies and distresses are derrived from the fact our Environment of Evolutionary Adaptedness (EEA) is different in many aspects from our current environment. It is the irony of evolution that has prepared us for an environment that has long since past (a phenomenon called evolutionary lag). This book is an effective interface of academic disciplines. It provides a unique perspective that has been conspiciously lacking from previous literature. This perspective on the management of humans in the modern world is grounded in the consideration of our species' evolutionary past and how we can reconcile the differences. Management must take into account the "genetic leash" (Wilson, 1978) to which humans are tethered in order to maximize employee satisfaction and ultimately the stockholder benefits that drive an industrial society.

Book Description
Wars against Freud have been waged along virtually every front during the past decade. Now Paul Robinson takes on three of Freud's most formidable critics, mounting a thoughtful, witty, and ultimately devastating critique of the historian of science Frank Sulloway, the psychoanalyst Jeffrey Masson, and the philosopher Adolf Grünbaum.
Frank Sulloway contends that Freud took most of his ideas from Darwin and other contemporary thinkers--that he was something of a closet biologist. Jeffrey Masson charges that Freud caved in to peer pressure when he abandoned his early seduction theory (which Masson believes was correct) in favor of the theory of infantile sexuality. Adolf Grünbaum impugns Freud's claim to have grounded his ideas--especially the idea of the unconscious--on solid empirical foundations.
Under Robinson's rigorous cross-examination, the evidence of these three accusers proves ambiguous and their arguments biased by underlying assumptions and ideological commitments. Robinson concludes that the anti-Freudian writings of Sulloway, Masson, and Grünbaum reveal more about their authors' prejudices--and about the Zeitgeist of the past decade--than they do about Freud.
Beautifully crafted and full of surprises, Robinson's work is a compelling defense of one of history's most original and powerful minds. Freud and His Critics will earn an enduring place in the raging Freudian debate.

Hugh McKnight's authorship defiency.......2007-09-12
I bought his book not only to have a reference to canal travel but to scope out costs of such travel. While there are several, not easily found cost references, I found no specific information leading to the unavoidable conclusion that the old adage, "if you have to ask, you can't afford it", applies. Which I resent. Mr. McKnight should re-write this book adding what the costs of entering each canal, what are the average costs of meals, wine, fuel, and comparisons of food among the various sources on that route. I am not an inexperienced traveler and always have some advance feeling for cost so that unplanned surprise costs are not faced. I can understand his reluctance to include costs, as so many change fairly rapidly, but relative costs should be an important part of all travel books.
Cruising French Waterways - a quick review.......2007-01-15
This book is great, it not only tells you about each canal but also gives you a history of the canals and a break down of the area you are travelling through and lots more information.
Spares no effort to explore the depth and beauty of the scenic French countryside.......2005-09-14
Now in this updated and expanded fourth edition, Hugh McKnight continues to draw upon his nearly four decades of experience and undeniable expertise in making Cruising French Waterways an essential reference and guidebook for anyone wanting to sail or motorboat along one of France's 5000 miles of waterways. Extensive descriptions of scenery and historic locales make Cruising French Waterways as ideal for armchair travelers as it is for vacationers whetting their anticipation for what to expect. Black-and-white and color photographs offer a glimpse of the ancient wonders waiting to be discovered. Packed with detail cover to cover, Cruising French Waterways spares no effort to explore the depth and beauty of the scenic French countryside.
As complete as they get.......2002-02-15
I got this book as reference for a medieval historical I was writing, set partially on the Saone and Rhone rivers. This was possibly the best reference I used since I can't go over there to check out the place in person, and the people I know who have been there haven't been able to give me much information.
This book recounts incredible detail about the countryside and regional dishes, availability of shopping, hotels, and tourist spots, and there are little humorous stories about some of the stops along the way. The detailed accounts of each lock along the canals is absolutely amazing and I'm sure quite helpful for those who actually find themselves there.
Unfortunately, the canal system of France was started after my book was set, so I couldn't use the lock and interesting layovers along the canal info, but...
Now I want to go to France and cruise all these fascinating rivers and canals! I'm afraid that's going to cost considerably more than this book does. Until then, I'll continue to peruse the book and dream.

Sacré bleu! Even after years of trying to learn French, you still have trouble conversing with a native speaker. Why? Because everyday French is filled with slang and colloquialisms. Street French 1 is the first in a series of slang/idiom books that teach you how to speak and understand the real language used daily on the street, in homes, offices, stores, and among family and friends.
Entertaining dialogues, word games and drills, crossword puzzles, word searches, and "inside" tips will have you sounding like a native in no time at all.
Customer Reviews:
Very Well Written.......2007-09-09
This book is a very well considered review of colloquial French as it is spoken. It's broken down into easy to digest lessons with insightful advice for those who want to speak and understand French as it is commonly spoken.
The French you won't learn at University.......2007-02-18
This book and this author's book 3 (Naughty French) are 2 of the funniest books I have ever owned. I studied French at University for 7 years and believe me the French in these books is not what I learned. I cannot tell you how refreshing these two books were to me after having studied French formally at the University. These books teach you how people in the street talk, how the people engage informally with each other in every day interactions. I can remember when I first went to France and could barely survive for the first 2 weeks I was there because I could understand next to nothing---because the natives were all speaking in slang. I wondered if I had really been taught French or Greek---but after 2 weeks I began to figure out that the French I had been taught was proper French and the natives could all understand me---but they had their own lingo of slang just like we have here. Slowly, but surely I began to pick up the slang expressions from them, but having been exposed to these 2 books would have made my transition period infinitely easier and smoother. I strongly recommend this book and his other books to anyone planning on going to France and to those who want to have a good laugh---this book is extremely funny as well as useful. I wish I had known about this book a long time ago. I think a book like this should be used in French classes in conjunction with a formal French language grammar because this book to me is just as important as the formal grammar boook---you need to know how the people actually talk in every day circumstances---not just formal conversations.
Street French -- put to the test! .......2006-06-27
I bought this book before I trotted off to Paris a couple years ago. I'd taken French in high school and college, and I bought this book to refresh my French a bit. I'm so glad I did! This book teaches you the way that the French really speak, dropping letters and words just the way we do when we speak English. None of my French teachers prepared me for Paris. I would've thought I'd learned the wrong language.
This book will help you take the French that you were taught and turn it into the language that the French actually speak. I'd recommend that most people have had at least a year of high school French to make the most use of this book. If you haven't had any French, or at least a Romance language, and you're going to France in a hurry, you might want to get a phrase book and memorize it. This isn't the right book for an emergency.

Great for Slang, Great for Study.......2004-01-13
This is a really good book, I must say. It's not the book that I originally wanted to like, thinking that it was just going to teach me basic vocabulary, but it goes much deeper than that. Mr. Burke teaches you many important things such as the contractions that the French commonly use and also the way Fench ask questions, etc. These ideas are what seperate this book from just a basic slang vocabulary book.
Mr. Burke will teach you how to sound like a native French speaker. The contractions section is a great example of how this works. He teaches you that instead of saying something like 'Je ne peux pas' (the English equivalent of "I am not able to") you should say something more along the lines of 'Je'n peux'pa' (sounds more like "I can't.") These are the essentials that will keep you from sounding just like a French student (and speaking Scholarly French) to sounding like a native speaker who has lived in France for years (something much better).
If you are interested in learning French beyond what a typical academic setting can bring to you, this is definitely a book and a series I recommend. For anyone who wishes to go to France and speak a more natural and believable French, this is the book for you. I would recommend this to anyone and would even be willin to buy it as a gift for any one of my friends.
Recommendation from a native French teacher from Paris, Fran.......2002-05-06
From Paris, France, and a teacher of French at at all levels, (including adult courses),I think I am qualified to grade this book.
This is exactly the pronounciation that I try to have my students understand. Even if they cannot pronounce correctly, at least they are able to understand the French when they speak!
Many of the non-native teachers of French can, more or less, speak academic French (some can't!), but faced with a native French speaking person, they can't understand most of the conversation.
I am definitely going to use this booklet as part of my teaching material, along with some other ones.

Book Description
Compared to racing done elsewhere in the world, the American Motorcyclist Association's Grand National series is challenging, unique, and baffling to outsiders. To have any chance at all of becoming the Number 1 rider, riders must have the well-rounded racing skills to enable them to, over a single season, find their way around dirt tracks of four varying lengths, shapes, and speeds, plus paved road circuits like Daytona. Because each surface and track requires a bike to be set up quite differently, contestants must be able to compete on essentially five different dirt and road model motorcycles. Complicating matters further, these bikes cannot be one-off factory specials specifically designed for each type of racing, but instead are based on more-limiting stock machines. All things considered, Grand National racing is one of the most demanding and exciting motorcycle racing on the planet.About the AuthorJoe Scalzo's four decades of racing passion have taken him around the world and resulted in 13 books, thousands of magazine and newspaper features, and a wide reader following as one of the sport's most original and insightful chroniclers. He lives and works in Southern California.
Customer Reviews:
Grand National: Americas Golden Age of Motorcycle Racing.......2007-01-20
Great photos and info but could have used the Harley-Davidson name for the motorcycle rather than "hogs". It becomes iritating after the 20th time! Also could have used a profesional proof reader.
A very poor attempt at telling the Grand National story.......2006-03-21
Scalzo's folksy attempt at writing is sophomoric and juvenile...His constant use of the so called jargon of the time is comedic at best and a disservice to the individuals that actually participated in this era of motorcycle racing history. For example, No one ever referred to Triumphs and BSA's as "Lime Juicers" as Scalzo maintains. He has also peppered the book with photos taken after the true "Grand National" period was over. I suppose using photos from modern day flat tracking was easier for him but I think he should have taken the extra time and effort and come up with photos strictly from the period he was supposedly documenting. Even the cover photo was taken long after the "Grand National" period was over. Take a pass on this book as it is not worth the money.
