Every manager should have a copy.......2001-04-01

Readers may wonder about the obscure title: why exactly an `Encyclopedic Dictionary'? Don't be put off, however, by this imposing name. What we have here is a genuinely useful book that should be close to hand in the offices of managers who really want to understand their profession. Organisational Behaviour studies what makes people do as they do when they gather together in task-oriented groups. This dictionary provides a (largely) jargon free guide to the best academic thinking on the subject. It contains around 500 entries of about 1000 words each, written by 180 specialists from the discipline.

The entries are cross-referenced so you can start reading on any topic of interest and follow a web of connections through the book that broadens and deepens your understanding of the subject. Like the best reference books its easy to pick it up wanting a quick definition only to find you're still reading an hour later because of the fascinating connected material it contains.

For example, looking at the entry on "crises" leads to references for `accidents' (reviewing how failures happen because of the complex interactions of systems); `Identification' (of causes); `decentralisation' (as a means of avoiding accidents); `risk taking and `organisational learning'. Entries on `decision-making', `group decision-making', `organisational neurosis', `culture' and `innovation' to name just five are all equally fascinating and lead on to yet more useful entries.

Any one responsible for managing people will find material here to improve their understanding of the task. Managers should avoid the latest airport news-stand pot-boiler on business advice and instead invest in this book. By business book standards the paperback is good value. More often than not you'll find it will be open on your desk rather than gathering dust on the shelf.

Self-esteem gets a big press these days. Much of it is wrong. It has been demonstrated that even many hardened criminals have high self-esteem.
Mario Jacoby is a seasoned Jungian anlayst who sets us straight as regards self-esteem and the all-too-much ignored dynmamic of shame. This book can be read with profit by teachers, clergy,social workers and by people simply struggling under a burden of a sense of shame. My judgment is that it is a "must read" in our present cultural and social atmosphere.

I've been playing golf for about 3 years now. This book helped my golf game come together and I review it before I play or practice. It is like a pocket-size dictionary for golf. I even carry it in my golf bag in case I get into trouble on the course. If you want to start shooting lower scores, you must practice, practice, practice. This book will be a valuable guide to keep you focused. I read this book for the physical aspect of the game and Golf Is Not A Game Of Perfect for the mental aspect.

This is one of those rare collections of photographs that makes visual the question "Remember when...?". Photographer/historian Mark Klett has produced a second book that addresses locations in the western United States initially photographed in the 19th century by such important photographers as William Bell, William Henry Jackson, and T. H. O'Sullivan. His first book 'Second View: The Rephotographic Survey Project' (a project supported by the University of New Mexico) was published in the 1970's and paired contemporary photographs of sites in the Western US with photographs by the above mentioned photographers. Now he and his fellow photographers - Kyle Bajakian, William L. Fox, Michael Marshall, Toshi Ueshina, and Byron G. Wolfe - have again photographed the same sites (hence the title) and the resultant photographs are stunning.

In this volume the three time periods of the three photographs in these 43 sets of 110 sites not only document physical and environmental changes: they speak loudly about man's intervention with nature and as such this book is on hallowed ground. Not only for the beauty of the design and photographic content should this book be widely read and collected, but also it should remind us of the sanctity of the planet on which we live. To reach the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), countries (or states and provinces within countries) have two options: increasing the inputs used to "produce" the outcomes measured by the MDGs, or increasing the efficiency with which inputs are used. This study looks at whether improvements in efficiency could bring gains in outcomes.

Two chapters use world panel data to analyze country level efficiency in improving education, health, and GDP (and thereby poverty) indicators. Two other chapters use province and state level data to analyze within-country efficiency in Argentina and Mexico for improving education and health outcomes. Together, the four chapters suggest that apart from increasing inputs, it is necessary to improve efficiency in order to reach the MDGs. While this conclusion is hardly surprising, the analysis helps to quantify how much progress could be achieved through better efficiency, and to some extent, how efficiency itself could be improved.

This book is published as # 9 in the World Bank Working Papers Series. These papers are published to communicate the results of the Bank's ongoing research and to stimulate public discussion.
