The book inquires the consequences of speculative trading based on private information about financial asset markets. It presents an extensive and thorough discussion of theoretical and empirical methods used in previous studies on sequential trade models. The text also introduces a new framework for estimation and hypothesis testing that extends earlier work in the field substantially. Several market microstructure models in the spirit of Easley, Kiefer, O'Hara and Paperman (Journal of Finance, 1996) are reviewed. The common theme of these papers is the focus on the consequences of information based trading on the price setting behaviour of the market maker. Assuming that some traders have private information about a security's true value, a number of relations between observable quantities like the spread, the volume, timing of trades and volatility of asset prices can be established. The authors introduce a number of improved methods for estimation and hypothesis testing for sequential trade models and apply this econometric framework employing a high frequency transaction data set for a number of stocks traded on the New York Stock Exchange during August 1996. All results that are necessary for understanding the empirical framework introduced are derived step-by-step. The text is ideally suited as a reference work on old and new results as well as a textbook for graduate courses on Market Microstructure Theory, Empirical Methods in Finance or Econometrics.

A Violation of Lean Principles.......2003-12-15

In this book, as well as "Office Kaizen: Transforming Office Operations into a Strategic Competitive Advantage," William Lareau provides some of the rudimentary tools and theories of Lean practices. However, both books fall seriously short of providing the comprehensive, straight-forward lean techniques and philosophies that both management and their employees require to introduce, improve and sustain lean processes over the long-term. In short, I found that his books actually violate Lean principles in that they contain hundreds of pages of "Munda" (waste)!

Lareau correctly argues that for any business to successfully integrate a Lean program into its structure, it needs to develop and sustain overwhelming employee acceptance and involvement in the program. Unfortunately, Lareau's psychological foundations for his theories on human motivations are outdated. Much has been revealed in the field of psychology in the past 15-20 years with which Lareau clearly needs to acquaint himself.

Lareau makes repetitive attempts to motivate the reader to his way of thinking through tiresome war characterization analogies and often unfounded attacks to minimize or discredit past business improvement programs and their proponents in favor of his own.

He attempts to develop and reinforce the belief that Lean requires such levels of training and business restructuring, that the reader must conclude that to successfully implement and sustain Lean, they must invest heavily and for a lengthy duration, in an outside Lean consultant. His books are essentially marketing tools for his own consultant firm.

Incidentally, this book lacks both an index and a bibliography. Perhaps Lareau finds that citing his sources and crediting the specific works of others are an unnecessary inconvenience.

I had to read this book for a class, otherwise I likely would never had chosen it. I was extremely pleased with its content, and found that I had experienced all of the archetypal stages in my life in some form or another. My fellow classmates were equally pleased. As a matter of fact, one student in particular went so far as to tatoo the Chinese symbol for the Warrior on his bicep.

From the perspective of an educator who deals with students who range from young adult to fify somethings in a community college setting I found this an invaluable resource. I feel the work is of immese value as it always requires that you evaluate your current perspective and superimpose it upon those your are dealing with. If one can read through this text without repositioning their own parameters it would amazing.

It would be of particular value for anyone trying to determine their place in the overall scheme of things. The sixties manta, "the family of man on the spaceship earth," could aptly be used to subtitle this work.

This book really helped me to embrace the different stages in life and showed me how to grow into who I want to be. It not only restored my faith in "This to shall pass", but showed me how and why. It helped me to accept the lessons I needed to know then and now. It is a book I give to friends when they hit the wall. There is nothing better I can do for them.

This is one of my all-time favorite books, and one of my favorite books to recommend to people. Pearson explains the Hero and the Heroic Archetypes (Warrior, Wanderer, etc.) in a clear and down-to-earth way. This is the easiest, most straightfoward, introduction I have found to Jungian and archetypal psychology. It presents powerful life-altering ideas in a readily accessible format. This book is an excellent introduction to Jungian thought. It is excellent for anyone who feels "stuck" in life. It is wonderful for people who want to understand themselves and others more deeply, especially with regard to developing higher possibilities. It is a book which helps you discover, and encourages you to pursue, what is most admirable within you.

If you do ride or want to ride in the advanced level this is the book for you. This book explains everything you need to know once you are ready to start with the double bridle.
Do not start until you and your horse know every aspect from the book "The principles of riding" though.
Perfect book for instructors.
I bought the german edition 12 years ago. I bought the english edition last year. It is based on the comletely revised german edition from 1997. I use this book over and over...

Great book, if you're at high level of riding........2000-04-12

This book was excellent for understanding the riding, training, and high level rules of Grand Prix dressage, but if you're just getting into riding, or are in lower training level dressage, this is not the book for you. For anyone who is interested in making to Grand Prix of St. George or higher, buy this book! The knowledge in both rules and regulations, and in strataegies are wonderful.

Exactly as advertised .......2005-09-04

This book is exactly what it says it is (how very German). It is a handbook that you can use on a daily basis to improve your dressage. In the front there are chapters on such things as a riders duty to the horse, the correct seat, tack and training facilities.

There are then general tips on creating the foundations for dressage and training such as developing lateral bend or forward thrust and then the chapters begin on advanced dressage exercises such as pirouettes, schaukel or flying changes. Each are described in full, there are exercises to improve the quality of each, problems to avoid and special notes for the rider.

An excellent book to have in your library. It's not a barrel of laughs to read but certainly gives you many many exercises to work through and many good tips for improving both your riding and your horse's way of going.

Somewhat Disappointing .......2007-04-04

I'm deep in the midst of planning a wedding. Early on, I checked out this book and two others (The Complete Guide to Gay and Lesbian Weddings and the Essential Guide to Lesbian and Gay Weddings) from the library to see which ones I might want to buy. I expected this book to be my favorite, but found it next to useless.

This book was cute and sometimes funny but lacked substance. All of the advice was based on a very traditional wedding and assumed a level of parental involvement (and their $$) I found pretty unlikely for many couples. My main concerns: chapters full of fluffy fillers, inaccurate information and missing key pieces.

First, there was no information about finding a reception or ceremony site, other than a cute but silly "find you style" quiz. I was hoping for concrete information on choosing a gay-friendly site, working with vendors, signing a contract and ways to hold a wedding at your home. nada.

Instead, there's a whole chapter devoted to quizzes on sex after marriage (funny but unhelpful) and another of legal issues (adoption, domestic partnerships etc). The legal chapter is already out of date and inaccurate. Please please do not rely on it. Check out Nolo's A Legal Guide for Lesbian and Gay Couples and the HRC website instead.

Also, the alternative wedding section was only a few pages long. They only included a paragraph each on destination weddings or "ethnic" weddings. I would have been happy to cut out the section on attendents and the presents you should give them in favor of more alternative wedding ideas, creative invitations or ideas on dealing with wedding stress.

I did really like the wedding stories that preceeded each chapter. Definitely the best thing about the book.

But I would still recommend either of the other two books I mentioned instead. The Essential Guide is dated, but still the best of the bunch in my opinion. The Complete Guide came out in 2004 and has a very reassuring tone.

Needed Guidance.......2006-05-01

This book is very practical and incuded more than expected. Legal issues, adopting, all good information to keep in mind. And the real-life stories are used well. Great book!

Kind of a narrow view.......2006-03-26

I am not sure what I expected from this book. Maybe I have a bias since I am a professional event planner who also happens to be a lesbian. First off I must say the book does offer practical, easy to understand advice for any couple planning a wedding. The chapters are well laid out and packed with practical ideas. On the other hand the book does have a more gay male friendliness than lesbian friendliness. The book is authored by a gay male and straight female. So, the true lesbian point of view is kind of lost in the shuffle. Silly issues arise for the lesbian side of things assuming that all lesbian relationships are made up of two masculine females or two effeminate females. The vast assumption is made that all the members of a lesbian wedding party will wear dresses. The silly question also arises as to which woman will toss the bouquet or if two should be tossed. My partner would not be caught dead in a dress and do not even try to push a bouquet into her hands. I do commend Mr. Toussaint on his ability to make a well rounded wedding guide for the "rainbow" family, but his research (if he did any) should have include vast types of lesbians the same as it included vast types of gay male relationships. For this reason I can not give the book a full five stars because it simply does not address the issues of lesbian couples.

Lesbian Love.......2004-09-17

I heard about this book after a friend of mine in L.A. went to a signing. Thanks, Amazon, for carrying it. Toussaint and Leo did a great job telling us how to plan the wedding, and I'd recommend this book to anyone. But what I liked best, and didn't expect, was that the book told us all about the legal stuff; we might want to adopt someday, and there is a whole section about the different laws from each state. There was also a part on how to find an officiant, which helped a great deal. I thought I was going to have to spend days on the Internet searching for places to get help in that area, but it's all spelled out in the book. They give a whole list of sites to go to. We hope to someday make it to Massachusetts to make the whole thing legal, but until then, and after reading this book, we feel our "marriage" is as real as the best of them.

G & L Weddings: The perfect gift for ANYONE getting married.......2004-09-10

I read Mr. Toussaint's original article on gay and lesbian weddings last fall in Brides, found it enlightening but wished there were more. I was delighted to learn that he'd put together an entire book!

Love the real-life stories of couples at the start of each chapter -- found that they apply to anybody, gay or straight, who are getting married. That's why I've given copies to friends and family, gay and straight, whether they're planning on getting married to their mates or not. And I'd love to see if Mr. Toussaint can follow up with another edition -- I'm sure this is a book that can be updated regularly with new info and new real-life stories. I'll be looking forward to new editions, and I'll keep giving copies to couples as gifts.

A good and diverse selection of sports writing.......2005-04-12

You don't have to be a sports fan to enjoy The Best American Sport Writing 2004. I don't have a lot of interest in, much less passion for, running. Bicycling and swimming, too, seem sensible and healthy activities, but not all that compelling. It stands against reason, then, that the stories I liked the most in this book had to do with running, bicycling, and swimming. Weird that.
Houghton-Mifflin has been issuing Best of American Sports Writing for years, rotating editors annually. This edition's editor is Richard Ben Cramer, who gives this insight into the selection process - "I tend to like stories that treat a whole life, or at least make a connection between sports and the rest of life." Most of the twenty-six examples here, culled from magazines, newspapers, and web sites, do just that. They run the gamut of sports related topics; baseball - 6 stories, basketball - 5, football -3, running -3, fishing -2, and one each on bicycling, swimming, soccer, horse racing, airplane racing, taxidermy, sports groupies, and other (A personal memoir of sorts by Sports Illustrated's Rick Telander.) A little surprisingly there are no stories on hockey, hunting, boxing, or golf.
Cramer also slights professional football. The football related entries include Charles Stowers' (Dallas Observer) story about 6-man football leagues in Texas high schools, Charles Pierce's (Sports Illustrated) look back at the NFL decision to play games the Sunday after the John Kennedy assassination, and Ira Berkow's (New York Times) short profile of St. John's University's coach John Galiardi. Included are long articles on basketball's Yao Ming, Amare Stoudemire, and Michael Jordan's last season of professional basketball. Maybe the selections would have made more sense to me if I had more interest in basketball and less in football.
In any event, the strength of this book lies elsewhere. Steve Friedman's `The Race of Truth' (Bicycling) is an engrossing story of the troubled speed-racer Graeme Obree. Lynne Cox's `Swimming to Antartica (The New Yorker) is the only entry from a non-professional writer. Cox recounts, in fascinating detail, the preparations and sacrifices she underwent to attempt to swim in the near-freezing waters of Antartica. Stephen Rodricks's appropriately titled `A Long Strange Trip' (Runner's World) profiles Iranian Reza Baluchi, a man who, Forrest Gump-like, is running across the world in the name of peace. Rodrick catches him outside of Hicks Junction, Arkansas. The most harrowing story is Michael Hall's sensitive portrait of Burundi-born Gilbert Tuhabonye in `Running for His Life' (Texas Monthly), which details Tuhabonye's violent youth - beaten, burned, and left for dead in his Hutu versus Tutsi homeland - and his new life as a running coach in Texas.
Incidentally, the stories in Best... 2004 were all written in the calendar year of 2003. Series editor Glenn Stout includes a selection of Notable Sports Writing of 2003, a list of about 100 or so stories (author/title/publication) that apparently were in the running but didn't make the final cut.
