Book Description

"Globalization" is here. Signified by an increasingly close economic interconnection that has led to profound political and social change around the world, the process seems irreversible. In this book, however, Harold James provides a sobering historical perspective, exploring the circumstances in which the globally integrated world of an earlier era broke down under the pressure of unexpected events.

James examines one of the great historical nightmares of the twentieth century: the collapse of globalism in the Great Depression. Analyzing this collapse in terms of three main components of global economics--capital flows, trade, and international migration--James argues that it was not simply a consequence of the strains of World War I but resulted from the interplay of resentments against all these elements of mobility, as well as from the policies and institutions designed to assuage the threats of globalism. Could it happen again? There are significant parallels today: highly integrated systems are inherently vulnerable to collapse, and world financial markets are vulnerable and unstable. While James does not foresee another Great Depression, his book provides a cautionary tale in which institutions meant to save the world from the consequences of globalization--think WTO and IMF, in our own time--ended by destroying both prosperity and peace.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Brilliantly written and scary.......2002-07-05

This well written, documented and academic book reads like a novel. Author explains how the British global-led economy was structured in the 19th century, its weaknesses and how it unraveled in the 1920s and 1930s. He reviews monetary policies, banking instability in the pre- and Depression era, trade and its collapse, the rising reaction against international migration starting in the 1890s and culminating after World War I, the opposition between nationalism and capital that existed after 1929 and finally assesses if a new depression could occur again. Despite the dates, the events it describes look so familiar to us today that it sends shivers down the spine.

Written in 2001, the author was still optimistic in his conclusions saying that unlike the 1930s, nobody today was challenging global finacial orthodoxy. But since Ben Laden destroyed the World Trade Center, Argentina has collapsed like in the 1930s, Brazil is on the path to renege its debt just like in 1931, many scandals have shaken Corporate America, stocks have fallen to after-September 11 levels. Le Pen, a right-extremist was a contender to Chirac in the French presidential elections. Migrations have become a hot debate in Europe. The Bush Administration like the Hoover one puts barriers on international trade (steel), does not participate in multilateral debates (UN, Climate, International Court) damaging the system of multilateral organizations, debates and trade. These collapsed in the 1930s to be replaced by bilaterel relations with the known consequences: a global depression and a global war.

      Book Description

Organizational culture and climate continues to engage academic interest and debate. Culture has increasingly been linked to a diverse range of individuals and organizational behaviours. However, despite the international interest and importance of the concept, the dominant literature in this field has tended to reflect an Anglo-US model and perspective. There are no significant texts which have attempted to combine and integrate the more traditional with the more emergent perspective. This book will be the first volume to offer authoritative, critical and comprehensive discussion and information on the topic. It will review the current state of the art in terms of the theoretical and methodological issues and problems and it will consider future research directions.

          Book Description

"Mr. Gilman's work is the most convincing account of how Freud's anxiety about being Jewish is reflected in his work. After reading Mr. Gilman's exhaustive treatment, one cannot help seeing Freud as struggling to formulate a response to the Viennese notions of Jewishness in which he was inescapably steeped."--New York Times.

"Gilman [is] one of the most original and stimulating cultural historians of his generation... A rich... account that reminds us that the best cultural history does not bring us comfortingly nearer to the past, but brings its distance from us to life."--New Statesman & Society.

In The Case of Sigmund Freud, Sander Gilman traces the "medicalization" of Jewishness in the science and medicine of turn-of-the-century Vienna, and the ways in which Jewish physicians responded to the effort to incorporate racist biological literature into medical practice. Focusing on the new science of psychoanalysis, Gilman looks at the strategic devices Sigmund Freud employed to detach himself from the stigma of being Jewish and shows how Freud's work in psychoanalysis evolved in response to the biological discourse of the time.

"Gilman is unrelenting in documenting how the biological literature of the 19th century was racist to its core. A stimulating and provocative book."--David James Fisher, UCLA

"Historians, no matter what their field, ignore Sander Gilman's work at their peril."--George L. Mosse, University of Wisconsin

                  Book Description

More people than ever before now live in, visit or simply drive through the British countryside. Most have a genuine appreciation of their surroundings but few know much about how the land is managed, what is growing or the reasons for many of the features they see around them. This book offers an insight into all aspects of our rural environment. It tells how our present-day landscape has evolved and now continues to be tended by those whose livelihoods depend upon it.

From the supplier: Mineral deficiencies can lead to miscarriages, premature births, lack of appetite, excessive licking, premature aging and low sex drive in livestock. Subsoiling, mineral supplements, adding high-mineral content forages, and diversifying the diet of the livestock will help eliminate deficiencies.

                                2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2006-06-22

To my surprise, I found that this book is outdated in many respects, especially in the area of psychopharmacology -- SSRIs are not even mentioned amongst the antidepressants.

In addition, several key passages are confusingly worded, as are some of the questions on the practice tests. Sometimes the answers provided for the practice tests are clearly wrong or could have been correctly answered by more than one selection. Answer keys for chapter review questions have not always been updated to match updated questions.

I finished reading the book to get as much information as I could, but I will be sure to read at least one recent psychology textbook so that I can correct any errors in my learning.

                                5 out of 5 stars There's a reason it isn't like the test..........2005-03-27

They had me write it before the test even came out! I'm a little surprised it hasn't been updated, since it's 13 years old - but hey, I don't get royalties from this outfit.

4 out of 5 stars Helped me, maybe you too.......2003-07-29

I found the AP Pyschology Review book very helpful. The review was especially helpful - it was clear and concise. And the practice exams - "forget-about-it." The trick is that you have to already know what you are studying before you use the book because afterall, the book is just a review. It should only remind you of what you already know. The book is just brief enough to not cloud your mind and confuse you and is just comprehensive enough to get you everything you need to know. All said and done, I would definately recommend this book to anyone who wants to pass the exam, but beware, you must study too.

                                5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!.......2003-04-22

I loved this test prep! I purchased the Barron's AP Psych test prep too and I definitely prefer this one! I scored a 5!

1 out of 5 stars Horrible! Ambiguous and very dry.......2001-04-29

The text is very dry and boring. As mentioned by another reviewer, the practice questions are in the wrong format. I noticed that many of the multiple-choice questions are unclear and thus confusing.

Despite the reviews here, I bought this book under my teacher's recommendation and am very disappointed with the book.

                                Book Description

Award-winning novelist Samuel R. Delany has written a book for creative writers to place alongside E. M. Forster's Aspects of the Novel and Lajos Egri's Art of Dramatic Writing. Taking up specifics (When do flashbacks work, and when should you avoid them? How do you make characters both vivid and sympathetic?) and generalities (How are novels structured? How do writers establish serious literary reputations today?), Delany also examines the condition of the contemporary creative writer and how it differs from that of the writer in the years of Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and the high Modernists. Like a private writing tutorial, About Writing treats each topic with clarity and insight. Here is an indispensable companion for serious writers everywhere.

About Writing: Seven Essays, Four Letters, And Five Interviews by literary critic, writers workshop teacher, and world renowned science fiction author Samuel R Delany (Professor of English and Creative Writing, Temple University, Philadelphia) is an informed and informative study of the expertise necessary for a writer in any genre to become more organized, more knowledgeable, and more effective with the ultimate goal of profitable publication. As an analysis of modern and contemporary writing styles, About Writing informs the aspiring author of the ins and outs of technique, ideals, and styles for the most effective writing. About Writing is very strongly recommended to all literature enthusiasts, readers, writers, and students.

5 out of 5 stars An amazing, difficult, worth it writing book.......2006-03-07

I had the pleasure of reading this book before it reached the final draft. I have found the book almost as valuable as the teaching I recieved from the man himself. Though this is not a book for the light reader, if you give it time Delany will reveal many truths about writing and writers. Yes, it's academic, because this book is aimed at those who seek to become writers, and that is as much an academic pursuit as an artistic one. Delany won't coddle you and won't give you feel good platitudes about what it takes to be a writer. What he will give you is a solid basis for starting a writing career. It's not a pretty road to travel, and certainly not an easy one. This is an excellent roadmap.

1 out of 5 stars Wind without fire.......2006-02-15

Frankly, I found this deeply disappointing. I read a few of Delany's books a few years ago and liked them for their full-on romanticism, their vision and enthusiasm. But these essays are fundamentally dull. Maybe it's their subjects. I wouldn't recommend this to anyone but Dr Dryasdust and his colleagues. How did this fine Romantic become such a dreary academic ?

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, astringent, yet leavened with a generous humanity........2006-01-13

Delany has one of the most penetrating minds of anyone writing in English. This book should be a first resource for anyone considering writing novels--Delany discusses it as the serious pursuit that it is. I find myself reconsidering many aspects of my own writing, and not always comfortably. I'll be a better writer for it.

The first book written about the tradition of Irish hoops in over 15 years, ranks among the most comprehensive efforts on the subject ever undertaken.

5 out of 5 stars more than a football school.......2005-01-30

There a scores of books on the storied tradition of Notre Dame football, but very few on ND basketball, which has had many great moments of its own. And very few of those books provides the insights of Coffey's book. Instead of the traditional approach to a team's history, the author focuses on anecdotes provided by the players and other behind the scenes participants. This gives us a sense of their perceptions of what was happening, rather than the interpretations of the journalist. Coffey lets the book write itself (not trying to diminish his hard work), and the final result is something that I thoroughly enjoyed. Certainly a must for Irish fans, and I think any fan of college basketball would enjoy it as well.

                                5 out of 5 stars a "must-have" for the Notre Dame fan.......2004-09-21

Coffey interviewed seemingly countless old ND players and people associated with Notre Dame Basketball over its first 100 years. What you get is a wonderful portrayal of the program, through the words of those that were there; the very guys who woke up some of those famous Notre Dame "echoes", albeit on the basketball court. And herein lies the beauty of this book; Coffey helps shine a light on the fantastic tradition of ND Basketball, one naturally overshadowed by the legendary exploits of the Football team. For example, Coffey notes that ND is the only Div I school ranked in the Top 20 in total wins and winning percentage in BOTH football and basketball, a surprising fact to even the most ardent college sports fan. Of particular interest to me were the portrayals of the players from what's popularly referred to as "the greatest generation". They just don't make men like this anymore, and Coffey lets them tell their stories. Also gripping is the account of ND's 71-70 victory over the mighty Bruins of UCLA in 1974. In addition, Coffey concludes with the current roster recapping last season, and looking forward to 2004-5. This book is a must-have for the Notre Dame fan, and a great read for the fan of college hoops as well.

                                5 out of 5 stars A fantastic read.......2004-09-03

This work is incredibly thorough. Coffey allows his interviewees to tell their stories without tramping all over them with his own opinions. He lets the reader absorb the anecdotes and in the few cases where his subjects disagree, leaves it up to us to decide which side of the fence we fall on. It's unusual to find an author who's willing to just get out of the way like that. As someone else told me, I feel like I was invited to a big party with everyone who ever contributed to ND basketball and got to listen in on all the best conversations.

Not having Digger in there is a disappointment, but since Digger has his own book right now, it's understandable why he didn't want to participate.

If you like Notre Dame or college basketball (or both), this one is a must have.
