Book Description

In The Hillary Trap, journalist and media personality Laura Ingraham turns a razor sharp eye on this view of Hillary and questions her status as a metaphor for the modern empowered woman. Ingraham suggests that if anything, Hillary's mix of opportunism, acquiescence, and dependency has set women back rather than leading them forward. This is the Hillary Trap.

I do not like Hillary ether, But this book crosses the line of informative, on her and her politics, to an I hate Hillary rant.

1 out of 5 stars Paris Hilton takes on Hillary.......2005-05-18

Let's face it the only reason this Ms. Ingram has a career is that she is sort of attractive and conservative, a combination that apparently filled a need in our Faux media universe. (Also nice to be able to trot out Laura so as to prove that the fear of women embodied in Rush's quaking "femi-nzai" doesn't entirely translate into male Star War fan level of female company.) And let's also be fair she's no worse a hack than Hannity and is at least a bit more coherent than Ann Coulter. Her book on Hillary is just plain fatiguing, throw out some carefully spun ideas that Hillary supposedly represents than trash the straw woman Laura has created. Repeat this exercise endlessly and you have this book. Even while skipping a fair bit I was beginning to crave a little Coulter lunacy to keep things from getting too drab but no such luck. Ms. Ingram, unlike Ann, actually looks good in a leopard skin mini skirt, so why not some photos of that to keep one awake? Or are we supposed to pretend this is a serious book?

3 out of 5 stars Hillary is dangerous--but you already knew that........2005-01-25

As a disclaimer, let me say that I am a fan of Laura Ingraham's, but I am NOT a fan of Hillary Clinton. You might think that would translate into a rave review for this book, but it doesn't. The basic construct of each chapter is to take a liberal position, demonstrate how Hillary embodies it, and then offer a body of evidence rebutting the position and proving that Clinton is anti-democratic, anti-woman, anti-choice and anti- nearly everything else good and decent. It should be a devastating critique, but it isn't--what comes across is a loosely connected series of chapters with talking points and arguments that suggest Hillary is the personification of what's wrong with America today. And that's the problem--Ingraham would have been more persuasive if she had focused on the most egregious of Hillary's flaws instead of trying to indict Clinton on everything under the sun. Despite the fact that Ingraham litters the book with facts and data (most of which are nice tidbits for any argument you may get into with a Clintonista), it all gets monotonous very quickly and can even seem a little petty at times. All in all, it is a quick, readable political book (think "beach book") with several very good standalone chapters, but it doesn't deserve a place on the conservative bookshelf pantheon. Save that for something from Bork, Schlafly or Buckley.

4 out of 5 stars Sister Sister.......2004-12-03

The Hillary Trap is a reader which exposes the failed feminist theory still being pushed by the victim fanfare of the Hillary Clan. In it are seven sections each titled with a different trap. "The sisterhood trap," "The Education Trap," "The Work Trap," etc. which are all traps utilized by Hillary and her group-thinkers to spread the disease of victimhood thinking, lesson individual responsibility and freedom, and gain more government control for "The Village," theory.

An important read for anyone who wishes to clarify the underpinnings of feminist group-thinking, victimization attitudes, or social theory concerning personal responsibility and the tacits of personal freedom.

4 out of 5 stars Book is Really About the Failed Views of Elite Liberal Women.......2003-10-12

Laura Ingraham poses an interesting thesis: Hillary Clinton uses the language designed to "liberate" the masses of women in America, yet her policies are less likely to do so. For instance, low-class Sen. Hillary Clinton often speaks of a need for a "village" to raise a child, but in doing so, Ingraham points out, this means taxes must be higher, which decreases the independence of women, and places one's child in a stranger's hands--a child-care provider, which is a necessittee considering our high-tax system (reaching a federal income tax maximum of 35% as of this writing, but was 39.6% when Ingraham published her book).

Similarly, it is also true with other areas--such as self-defense. Hillary Clinton believes that women should not be able to defend themselves, and should instead, while being raped or abused, to accept their victimhood or try to call the police by dialing 9-11, which is not practicle considering police officers cannot be everywhere. Of course, in Hillary's world, this is not a problem since she has Secret Service protection and lives in an upscale neighbhorhood in New York.

The prose is not of the highest quality in this book. It seems that the writer is using the same tone that she would on her radio show, which takes away from the quality of the book. There is a difference between a spooken and written voice, and that is a major defefiency here.

Also, it is important to recognize that while Ingraham is talking about Hillary Clinton, her focus is not necessarily exclusively on her. She is criticizing elite women--those who subscribe to the views of the National Organization for Women, the university professors, female anchors at major news networks (excluding Fox News), and those who work for liberal think tanks or female Democratic Members of Congress.

Overall, it is a good book, although it does lack the quality I have experienced in other conservative books such as Ann Coulter. It lacks the superb logic, researched material, and ability to seriously call one's political opponents for what they are: usurpers of power.

Book Description

Create a more flexible, responsive, and competitive business

A Publication of The Center for Effective Organizations

Picking up where the successful Organizing for the Future left off, this work from the Center for Effective Organizations presents a coherent set of principles and hands-on guidance for creating the successful organization of tomorrow. Celebrated contributors such as Jay Conger, David Finegold, and Tora Bikson--not to mention the editors themselves--empower a book that captures the latest thinking and new practices regarding the design of complex organizations. The emerging forms and contexts of organizations, enablers of continuous performance improvement, and change implementation processes are among the many cutting-edge topics discussed.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Challenges of the Future........2000-07-31

"Tomorrow's Organization focuses on the new organizational designs and management approaches that are emerging as organizations transform themselves to face the challenges of continuous and relentless global competition. The book is based on two premises. The first is that the nature and intensity of competition have changed, and so organizations are now required to be simultaneously more effective and more flexible in their ability to reconfigure themselves, carry out their dynamic strategies, and make sure they are delivering value to their customers faster and better than their competitors. The second is that strategy and organization are not enough: organizations must also create new approaches to the human issues that accompany change" (from the Preface).

In this context, editors divide this invaluable study into four parts:

Part I- Designing Competitive Organizations. In this part (Chapters 1-4):

* E. E. Lawler III, D. Finegold, and J. A. Conger focus on the development of a framework for understanding the factors that contribute to the effectiveness of corporate boards, and specific principles and practices that can contribute to board effectiveness.

* J. R. Galbraith describes customer-product structures, and focuses on three questions concerning this kind of structures: (1). What are hybrid structures? What do they like? (2). Why are companies choosing to organize in this way? (3). How do we make hybrid structures work effectively?

* J. R. Galbraith argues that "the new information technology facilitates the networked organization by allowing independent firms to join together in networks". And then he describes the various design issues that have to be addressed in networked organizations.

* J. R. Galbraith examines the factors on which companies organize their global operations, and considers the major approaches to organizing, as well as where those approaches fit.

Part II- Enabling Competitive Performance. In this part (Chapters 5-7):

* D. Finegold, E. E. Lawler III, and G. E. Ledford Jr. ask that 'Is attention to competencies another management fad, or is it a more fundamental and lasting change in the theory and practice of managing organizations and individuals? Then, answering this question, they examine three distinct competency approaches as well as tensions among them.

* S. G. Cohen and D. Mankin argue that "New information technologies, combined with the global competitive pressures, have fundamentally changed the nature of work". Then they examine this impact of information technology on the nature of work.

* E. E. Lawler III and S. A. Mohrman review employee involvement, total quality management, and reengineering approaches with an eye to assessing both how they unfolded and their long-term implications for the field of management.

Part III- Managing People in the Competitive Organizations. In this part (Chapters 8-11):

* S. A. Mohrman and E. E. Lawler III outline the specifications of new human resources management, and argue that "the human resources function not only must become a true business partner but also must be a microcosm of the organizations in which it is embedded".

* D. Finegold, after describing the main elements of new learning paradigm for building competencies, reviews the steps that firms can take to identify a clear set of priorities for development and to evaluate the make-or-buy decisions regarding training.

* J. A. Conger and K. R. Xin describe changes in the nature of executive education, changes that include an increased focus on developing executives for the new competitive environment and the new, more lateral organizational forms.

* E. E. Lawler III focuses on how pay systems can be designed to support particular strategies, and argues that "the challenge for organizations is to integrate their pay systems with business strategy and with overall organizational design. This challenge must be met if organizations are to compete effectively in rapidly changing global markets".

Part IV- Transforming the Organization. In this part (Chapters 12-14):

* D. Mankin, S. G. Cohen, and T. K. Bikson provide frameworks for creating high-performing organizations through the design and implementation of new information technologies and the team-based organizations that employ them , and describe the change processes needed to create the new organization.

* R. V. Tenkasi, S. A. Mohrman, and A. M. Mohrman Jr. study organizations as they have gone through a fundamental transformation in their organizational model and the factors that contribute to accelerated learning during transitions, and then describe the dynamics that characterize organizational learning as organizations change their underlying architectures.

* A. M. Mohrman Jr. and S. A. Mohrman argue that "performance management is central to managing the business, defining the individual's relationship with the organization, and providing a mechanism for feedback and control". Thus, they describe some of their research and experience to show how and why this happens.

I highly recommend this study to all executives.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent analysis of the 21st century organization.......1999-02-16

This book is a comprehensive examination of the changing nature of work and the changing character of the workplace. The text analyzes trends such as reengineering and TQM and whether these trends are likely to continue as is, evolve, or disappear.

The role of human resources management is depicted in an expanded role that assumes a cross-functional position in the modern organization. Training is seen as a process of continuous learning rather than a preparation process. Teamwork is shown as an essential facet of technology as projects are too complex to be assigned to individuals. The authors describe an organizational architecture that combines market, social, and technical skills. The individual is described in a nested position within a group, within a business unit, within an organization.

This text has been used at Santa Clara University in the Engineering Management and Leadership program and is highly recommended for similar programs or for managers or self-led professionals who want to delve into concepts such as spiral work-flow models and lateral organizations.

    Book Description

Nitrogen in the Environment: Sources, Problems, and Management is the first volume to provide a holistic perspective and comprehensive treatment of nitrogen from field, to ecosystem, to treatment of urban and rural drinking water supplies, while also including a historical overview, human health impacts and policy considerations. It provides a worldwide perspective on nitrogen and agriculture.

Nitrogen is one of the most critical elements required in agricultural systems for the production of crops for feed, food and fiber. The ever-increasing world population requires increasing use of nitrogen in agriculture to supply human needs for dietary protein. Worldwide demand for nitrogen will increase as a direct response to increasing population. Strategies and perspectives are considered to improve nitrogen-use efficiency. Issues of nitrogen in crop and human nutrition, and transport and transformations along the continuum from farm field to ground water, watersheds, streams, rivers, and coastal marine environments are discussed. Described are aerial transport of nitrogen from livestock and agricultural systems and the potential for deposition and impacts. The current status of nitrogen in the environment in selected terrestrial and coastal environments and crop and forest ecosystems and development of emerging technologies to minimize nitrogen impacts on the environment are addressed. The nitrogen cycle provides a framework for assessing broad scale or even global strategies to improve nitrogen use efficiency. Growing human populations are the driving force that requires increased nitrogen inputs. These increasing inputs into the food-production system directly result in increased livestock and human-excretory nitrogen contribution into the environment.

The scope of this book is diverse, covering a range of topics and issues from furthering our understanding of nitrogen in the environment to policy considerations at both farm and national scales.

          Book Description

One of this century's greatest athletes, Wayne Gretzky, The Great One, never failed to enthrall hockey fans with his incredible talent and skill.

It was with bittersweet sadness that the hockey world accepted the retirement of its most beloved player after the 1998-99 season. For the past twenty years, Wayne Gretzky above all has epitomized the toughness, power, and excitement of hockey. A class act, admired by teammates and foes alike, holder of numerous records, and always a consummate sportsman, Gretzky simply defines the game of hockey.

Including more than 120 extraordinary black and white and color photographs, The Great One celebrates Gretzky, from his early days as Brantford, Ontario's whiz kid, all the way to his Stanley Cup glories. The Great One includes a compilation of number ninety-nine's records of achievement and game-by-game statistics for his two decades of excellence.

Expertly written and researched by hockey historian Andrew Podnieks, the book also includes rare interviews, anecdotes, and little-known facts about Gretzky.

With Wayne Gretzky's retirement, hockey fans everyone mourned the passing of an era. But Gretzky's words and achievements live on in The Great One. There is no better way to remember the career of hockey's most superb and charismatic player.

ANDREW PODNIEKS is the author of many books on hockey, including The Blue and White Book, Portraits of the Game, and Shooting Stars. A hockey historian, photographer, and former creative writing teacher, Andrew lives in Toronto.

Wayne Gretzky obviously is the greatest Hockey
player ever (and Mike Modano is the best we
Amre-I-cans have produced, so far). Though
this book is more show than tell, it still
is a worthy tribute to Gretz. There are others
          better though.

I admire everything about Wayne Gretzky and everything he has done. But i also think Andrew did a poor job reflecting how much wayne gretzky has really accomplished. He is not just a great player , he is a great person. The book lacked certain detail and as the other reviewer said. It probably is only meant for a 3rd grade level =)

5 out of 5 stars The Great One: Life and Times of Wayne Gretzky.......2000-05-16

I bought this book for my 3rd grade son to write a paper with, and found myself completly engaged in it. For someone who didn't know much about "The Great One", I am now as big a fan as my son! Tells a lot about his younger years and doesn't just focus on the goals. AWESOME

The authors of this book are realistic - they know that when people sit down and begin to write, the journey begins to look quite daunting and many give up after a few lines or pages. There is a lot to learn, to think about, to research. They want you to give it the old college try, as they say, so this book is here to help you and make it a bit more fun along the way! This "how to" helpers guide gives tips on making your own space to write in, finding your "voice" and genre, keeping journals for ideas and to fan those artistic flames, literary terms, and even some writing seminars to attend and publishers of children's literature.
The tone of any advice in this book is firm but reassuring. Don't expect to get overnight results or quit your job for instant fame and success, but DO work hard and have fun while you're crafting your masterpiece, and something great may come of it. With any luck and this book by my side, who knows? Maybe I'll turn out the next "Harry Potter" series. :o)

3 out of 5 stars Good general inforamtion.......2003-01-26

This is a good book for helping a beginner writer think about all
of the elements of the writing process and industry. There are
good pointers, but you will not find very specific answers here.
