5 out of 5 stars one of the twentieth century's greatest..........2004-03-08

"The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism" was published in 1927, when George Bernard Shaw was at the very pinnacle of his success as a playwright. (He had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature for "St Joan" two years earlier.)

It purported to be a political primer for the "intelligent woman" who knew little or nothing of politics. This literary device of addressing an imaginary, ignorant audience allowed Shaw to start from the beginning. Clear your mind of all preconceptions, he said, and let us first look at the facts. What are the conditions under which the mass of mankind lives in the industrialized world? What is "politics"? What is the real meaning of the words "capitalism" and "socialism" and "communism"? What is the present state of society if examined without any of these labels? Why is it like this?

Having cleared the ground, Shaw then addressed that most fundamental of all social questions, the question to which his entire adult life had been devoted. How is the wealth of the world to be divided up?

Shaw was (to put it mildly) a committed socialist. And The Guide pulled no punches in asserting that socialism is the only sane answer to that question. However, he played scrupulously fair in his presentation of the facts. He described with absolute clarity the causes, conditions and present (1927) state of private property, political parties, banking, revolutions, facism, the stock market, credit, the national debt, universal adult suffrage, investment, strikes and poverty.

In short, the primary value of this extraordinary work was its conceptual clarity. Whether or not readers shared Shaw's opinions, merely by reading the book they could not help but greatly - and usefully - increase their understanding of their world.

The question for modern readers, seventy-five years later, is whether The Guide can help us to understand the modern world.

                  The answer is Yes.

As a test, borrow a copy of the book and read the chapter entitled "Banking". Just that one chapter. If you do not understand at least twice as much about what a bank is, and does, than you did before, then you need not bother with anything else in the book and you can return it with thanks. Otherwise, as a clincher, read the chapter entitled "Revolutions". I will be very surprised if you do not then buy your own copy.

That said, there are a couple of traps. Firstly, Shaw's English is now somewhat dated. He often uses very much longer sentences, with more subordinate clauses, than we commonly do today. This is ultimately helpful in conveying his meaning, but not immediately so to the modern reader. The Guide is therefore somewhat wearing to read for any length of time. It is not an easy book to skim.

Secondly, since Shaw does have a definite polemical intention (he wants us to become socialists), and since few writers have ever been more skilful at delivering a message while appearing not to, the reader has to be permanently on guard against taking Shaw's statements as facts. He is expert at the art of covertly leading readers to his own conclusions. The effort required to resist all this is also rather exhausting.

These shortcomings aside, and they are significant, The Guide stands as one of the great literary political works of the twentieth century. It is also one of the few genuinely hopeful contributions to the discipline we now call sociology. This reflects neither an earlier, cheerier worldview (in 1927 in England there was every reason to despair), nor a utopian naïveté (Shaw had a clearer sense than most of the horrors of which mankind is capable). No, the sense of hope that suffuses The Guide derives from Shaw's own inextinguishable, strangely realistic generosity of spirit.

In comparing Shaw with his famous fellow-socialist author H.G.Wells, C.P.Snow commented that "Shaw was a kinder, but colder man". He was. And both his kindness and his coldness inform The Guide: matchless detachment, combined with the utmost charity and reasonableness.

"The Intelligent Woman's Guide to Socialism and Capitalism" was George Bernard Shaw's political magnum opus. He had spent much of the previous forty years writing about politics and society, often in the guise of drama, musical criticism or "prefaces" to his published plays. And he continued to do so for the remainder of his life, the last major political work appearing only a few years before his death in 1950.

But this book is It. "The Intelligent Woman's Guide" summarizes all his thinking, all his reading, all his public speaking, all his experience, all his hopes and all his fears for the future. It is the culmination of a lifetime dedicated to the betterment of mankind by political means. In his twenty more years of work - including "The Apple Cart", "Too True to be Good", and "Everybody's Political What's What" - Shaw never wrote anything as good again. There was nothing more he needed to say.

Absolute genius. Shaw gives a understandable and accurate explantion of socialism and capitalism. It seems particularly revelvant in today's societal struggles with class, race, and politics. A book everyone who is interested in social justice should read.

                    Book Description

"Takes a holistic approach that is often lost in more narrow-minded texts. Great for graduate students."
--Robert Kramer, Department of Management Science, George Washington University

"With its distinctive voice, this is a basic text for all courses on organizational theory."
                    --BUSINESS HORIZONS

"This book presents an avant garde approach to an important topic about which, to my way of thinking, no one else has written even a contemporary book. . . . The authors' perspective readily allows the reader to comprehend and appreciate what is always present--often hidden and almost always controversial--the subjective side of organizational life. . . . The book you are about to read provides the rationalist and the veteran exactly what they each crave the most. It provides synthesis and order within a structure that acknowledges the interaction between an individual's motivations and needs and the apparent order that individual perceives. . . . The use of cartoons and other 'right-brain' highlighters allow readers to look down, as opposed to looking up, to understand and critique a phenomenon that a theory purports to explain, and to self-reflect on the importance a theory holds for the field. . . . Certainly, this is a book for the 1990s."
--from the Foreword by Samuel A. Culbert, John E. Anderson Graduate School of Management, University of California, Los Angeles

"What the authors are attempting is very difficult. David K. Banner and T. Elaine Gagné are declaring the presence of a new paradigm of the organization before it has actually crystallized and become part of the mainstream of organization theory. As such, the book is an act of leadership."
--Peter B. Vaill, Professor of Human Systems, School of Business and Public Management, The George Washington University

"A valuable resource to the students and instructors of organizational design and theory courses. The comprehensive coverage of traditional organization theory topics coupled with the authors' contemporary orientation and transformational perspective ensure this. "The organizational design and theory text by Banner and Gagné addresses an important fact of organizational life that is usually ignored or given superficial treatment at best in existing organization theory texts; namely, that our implicit assumptions, worldviews, metaphors, paradigms, and organizational culture are important determinants of why we organize the way we do."

--Douglas Austrom, President and Cofounder, Turning Point Associates, Indianapolis, Indiana

"A valuable basic text for business related undergraduate or postgraduate programmes on organization theory (and practice!); particularly from a transformational perspectives."
                    --LONG RANGE PLANNING

Providing a distinctive voice, Designing Effective Organizations is the new basic text for the undergraduate or MBA-level course on organization theory. Although it contains the same comprehensive topical coverage as the leading traditional organization theory texts, Designing Effective Organizations is definitely not a clone of the others in the field. David K.Banner and T. Elaine Gagné develop a transformational perspective--which sees the world of the organization as a projection of each organizational member's consciousness--as opposed to the traditional rational perspective. They thoroughly cover all the basics, but in a manner that reflects today's changing management paradigms.

                    Designing Effective Organizations
is the perfect text for scholars, researchers, professionals, and graduate and undergraduate students in organization studies, management, sociology, public administration, and education.

[This review originally appeared in the Autumn 1997 issue of ILLUSIONS Magazine: A Journey Through Ideas & Spirit. Review reprinted here with the permission of MoonShadow Press, Inc.]

DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS review by John Haynes

Not many of us can lay claim to being true paradigm-shifters, but let's give David Banner and T. Elaine Gagne credit---in their book DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS, they've managed to take the college business textbook to another level. Banner and Gagne do this by incorporating a fairly healthy dose of spirituality in their approach, and the result is a very readable textbook for undergraduate or MBA-level course work.

Basically, DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS examines organizational structure and processes in the ordinary way but also (and here's where the paradigm shifts) in a subjective, ethical, and-one is tempted to repeat---spiritual way.

What resonates throughout the book is the premise that organizations---like the people who comprise them---cannot be easily or readily quantified. Behavior cannot be predicted with 100% accuracy, and expecting human beings to work and think like machines is completely unrealistic. One has to cut beneath the surface to see the hidden dynamics. What one sees then is that the organization is nothing more than an agreement in consciousness, i.e. an agreement about `who we are', `how we interact with each other', how we deal with authority', etc. Understanding this basic truth ( and its far-ranging implications) results in a smoother operation, a better organizational flow.

For instance, in their book Banner and Gagne profile the organizational styles of unconventional companies like Ben & Jerry's Homemade, Inc. and Celestial Seasonings, but also examine such "staid players" as Dow Corning, Inc. and IBM. Thrown in the mix you'll find relevant mentions of the human potential movement, entropy, and quantum physics. Believe it or not, the lessons learned from such "out there" disciplines can be of great benefit to business organizations, if only reluctant corporations would open themselves to the possibilities.

From the book: "Science and spirituality are blending as the paradigm shifts; so are spirituality and organization. The Latin definition of spiritus, the root of spirit, is `breath.' In the organizational context, spirituality breathes life into the organization. Harrison Owen, in his article `Leadership by Indirection,' argues that, if we were to get `back to basics,' we would see our organizations as `spirit and flow' and that leadership would be seen as the capacity to `focus spirit and enhance its power.'"

This is not your father's MBA handbook, boys and girls.

DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS is also filled with Ashleigh Brilliant's delightful POT-SHOTS cartoons, which by themselves would be worth the price of the book.

If you or someone you know is studying business--whether in a college setting or informally--it would behoove you to take a look at Banner and Gagne's DESIGNING EFFECTIVE ORGANIZATIONS.

                        Book Description

The liquid phase of soil (soil solution) is a very thin, penetrating and all-embracing water layer. It has the most extensive surface among the biosphere components and interacts with all these components. Presented in this work is a new complex approach developed for soil liquid phase investigation that is based on in situ measurements. Investigation of the soil liquid phase can be of great significance in environmental research.

This volume sums up the vast experience of the authors' research into soil liquid phase composition in various ecosystems of Central and Eastern Europe. It describes the methodological basics of soil liquid phase research: methods of soil solution extraction, the main problems of application of ion-selective electrodes for immediate in situ assessment of ionic activity in soil liquid phase and redox potential, and ways to overcome those problems. Data are presented on soil liquid phase composition in natural and agricultural ecosystems, their redox, pH, carbonate and other regimes as well as the relations between the composition of the soil liquid phase and different ecological properties.

This work is devoted to the pursuit of new approaches to soil liquid phase analysis with a goal of discovering the role of soil liquid phase in the functioning of natural and agricultural ecosystems in recent soil-formation, formation of primary biological production, and in bio-geochemical turnover of elements. It includes new field investigation data as well as all data generalization carried out by means of a special complex database (developed by the authors) on soil liquid phase composition and other soil-ecological properties in various ecosystems in Central and Eastern Europe.

This book is the first English edition that integrally considers both methodological aspects and results of investigation of composition, formation, dynamics, spatial heterogeneity, and interrelations of soil liquid phase with other components of ecosystems. Soil scientists, agricultural chemists and ecologists will find this title of great interest.

This is a thin book or pamphlet of some 30 pages. It has good illustrations of tracks and scat of Maine's mammals and some large birds. Most of these mammals and birds are found in the North Eastern, and Mid-Atlantic states thankfully. Some examples: mouse, mole, vole, squirrel, rabbit, raccoon, fox, deer, black bear, moose, and owl.

The description fails to mention that this pamphlet is for the State of MAINE, only. Nothing for the animals indigenous to the western states.

                            Book Description

From the successor to Ruark and Hemingway comes the most lavishly illustrated, historically important safari ever captured in print.Peter Hathaway Capstick journeyed on safari through Namibia in the African spring of 1989. This was a nation on the eve on independence, a land scorched by sun, by years of bitter war. In these perilous circumstances, Peter Capstick commences what is surely the most thrilling safari of his stories career. He takes the reader to the stark landscape that makes up the Bushmen's tribal territories. There, facing all kinds of risks, members of the chase pursue their quarry in a land of legend and myth. the result is an exciting big-game adventure whose underlying themes relate directly to the international headlines of today. In this first person adventure, Capstick spins riveting tales from his travels and reports on the Bushmen's culture, their political persecution, and the Stone Age life of Africa's original hunter-gatherers. In addition, the author explains the economic benefits of the sportsman's presence, and how ethical hunting is a tool for game protection and management on the continent. Not since Peter Capstick's Africa has the author taken the reader along on safari. In this superbly illustrated book, Capstick returns to the veld with an ace video cameraman and leading African wildlife photographer Dr. M. Philip Kahl. one hundred of Dr. Kahl's striking color photos capture perfectly life and death in the "land of thirst."

                            4 out of 5 stars A realistic view of a modern safari.......2007-02-28

This book is a recounting of an elephant hunt that PHC took in the late 1980s. This edition is a nice hardback with lots of color photos. The DVD entitled Hunting the African Elephant with Peter Capstick could be considered a companion to this book (the safari described in this book was filmed - man of the scenes in the book are duplicated on film). The story covers PHCs tracking of various elephants, some of the daily ups and downs of camp life on safari, and a dramatic showdown at the end. There is a wealth of information in this book about a wide variety of topics beyond just hunting elephants. Capstick discusses the Bushmen of Southern Africa and how contact with modern society is dramatically changing thier culture, the poison used by the Bushmen on their arrows (it comes from grubs!), the dangers of the puff adder (what a nasty snake), the synergy between hunting and conservation, the effect that a .470 Nitro Express round has on a termite hill (!), and a bit about the anatomy of elephants. One of the less favorable reviews of this books states that it is less `exciting' than some of his earlier works. I would generally agree with this in the sense that this book is not filled with harrowing stories about hunting and safari that verge on tall-tales (although the first chapter about the leopard hunt is about as close as anyone is going to get and survive). It is a more measured, realistic recounting of a relatively modern safari. If you are looking for stories about dangerous encounters with big game, PHCs earlier works are probably more your cup of tea. If you want to know what it would be like to go on a modern safari without all the hyperbole associated with hunting dangerous game, this may be exactly what you are looking for. This is a good, if not uniquely outstanding, story of safari hunting.

Somehow each one of capsticks books good better each time. After reading four of his books previous, I do believe that this one is just as good if not better. Although I prefer Death in the long grass, and death in a lonely land, this book is very well written. Your hands sweat until the problem is taken care of. So finally to sum it all up it's another great read, from a great writer.

Having read four Chapstick books and loving them (his other tiltes left me excited and wide-eyed) I wasn't overly impressed with Sands of Silence. Although the book is well written, includes quality photos, and some interesting infomation about Africa; I thought it lacked the excitement of Peters other excellent hunting tales. You could do worse than buy this book, but I would encouage you to pick another of Peter's titles.

Once again, Peter Capstick has brought an African safari adventure into my home. This books is brillantly written as well as full of great color photos of the people of Nambia and some of the many animals of the wild. This is a must have for anyone who enjoys a great adventure!

This book is quite good. After the Fiske Guide to Colleges, I think this is my favorite. Even though Kaplan makes it plain that they are biased as the "un" in "unbiased" is crossed out on the cover, the book is more balanced and less negative than Princeton Review's Best 357 Colleges. Kaplan says that the book covers the "most interesting" colleges as opposed to the "most selective." However, they say right away that highly selective schools happen to be very interesting, so you will see mostly the same schools you will see in Fiske. Princeton Review has been faulted for including some big public universities for the sake of sales that, according to many, don't really belong in books on the best universities. Well, for better or worse, Kaplan has a few less state schools (as does Fiske). The "interesting" schools that other books leave out include many music or art schools or other specialty schools. For example, I haven't found Julliard or the Culinary Institute of America or Gallaudet University (for the hearing impaired)in any other books of the best schools.

The statistics in the book are understandable and helpful. I feel that Princeton Review does a slightly better job with their coverage of financial aid, but Kaplan is sufficient. Kaplan does something smart by offering a range of SAT scores for the middle 50% of accepted students for each school instead of giving a specific median score. Even though I think it's fun to see median scores, it can be discouraging to students who score below the median, and is therefore a less useful statistic.

I think parents and students will find this a good compromise between Fiske and Princeton Review. One reviewer said he felt that Princeton Review quoted student statements that made good copy instead of statements that accurately reflected a school's true nature. There's no way to know that for sure, but Princeton Review is pretty gossipy, so I have a sneaky suspicion that the reviewer is right. Fiske does a really great job explaining the academic strengths and opportunities of each school, but someone else pointed out that Fiske says so little that's negative that the reader has a hard time figuring out which school is best. Kaplan provides readers with more student opinion than Fiske, and while the reading is a fair amount drier than Princeton Review, it focuses on the classroom a bit more than the frat parties.

By Jacqueline Woodson Illustrated by E.B. Lewis

War ruins everything! At least that's what Ada Ruth thinks.
The book Coming On Home Soon is about a little girl named Ada Ruth. Her mom has to go get a job far away to get more money while World War II is going on. Sad Ada Ruth has to stay with her Grandma.
Ada Ruth is determined to keep writing to her mom even though she is not writing back. I think this book is really good but is also sad. I would recommend this book to people who are close with their family.
I think Jacqueline Woodson is a fabulous author and E.B. Lewis did a great job on the paintings. If you had or even have a loved one in war you should read this book!

4 out of 5 stars Heart Breaking and Heart Warming .......2005-09-11

Coming on Home Soon is a wonderful story about a young girl Ada Ruth dealing with separation from her mother. The story is set in a time of war and her mother leaves to find work in Chicago. Ada Ruth meanwhile stays at home with her grandmother and they both miss mama very much. While waiting for a letter from mama saying she is coming on home soon a small surprise arrives at their door. This surprise helps Ada Ruth and grandma cope with the emptiness they feel in their hearts. Finally Ada Ruth and grandma receive a letter that mama is coming on home soon.
This story is heart breaking because you can feel the sadness in Ada Ruth's heart. She misses her mother terribly and she waits so patiently for her return. Finally when mama returns home the story becomes a heartwarming reunion.

5 out of 5 stars A warm and reassuring masterpiece.......2005-08-09

This marvellously written and invitingly illustrated picture book is already a favorite. The spare, meaningful story coupled with the expressive paintings tell a story that is at the same time filled with tension and uncertainty, along with love and assurance. We know that Mama's decision to journey up to Chicago to work on the railroad was a hard one to make, and we know that Ada Ruth and Grandma will have a hard and uncertain time in her absence. We also know that Mama will return, and that there will be joy in their tiny home when she does. The final illustration, showing Mama's back as she heads toward the house, warms the heart; you can almost feel the hugs that will begin as soon as she walks in the door.

Jacqueline Woodson knows just how to tug at the heartstrings. When Mama's letter arrives, after so many days of the mailman bypassing the house, there is almost breathless anticipation as Grandma whispers, "Thank you, Lord." At this point as I'm reading the book to my kids, I have to stop and compose myself. This is a powerful book that demands to be read again and again. My daughter is constantly asking to read "the book where Mom gets a job." I eagerly pick it up and pull her onto my lap. And we hug. "Thank you, Lord."

I purchased this book because The Other Side is by far my favorite book to teach my elementary students with. We read it at least five times a year and each time we are able to gain a deeper understanding. Jacqueline Woodson and her illustrator have created another book I will use over and over. Coming On Home Soon is a great story that will allow me to discuss history, letter writing and many comprehension strategies with my students!

                                    Product Description

This is a large (8 1/4" x 10 3/4") paperback book, beautifully illustrated in watercolor on Arches paper. It is wartime, and "colored women" are being hired in Chicago to fill in for the men who are off fighting. Ada Ruth is left with her grandmother while her mother takes a job washing trains. Ada Ruth watches for the postman and adopts a stray cat to fill the endless days until her mother finally writes that she will be "coming on home soon." It's a gently, almost poetically told story, and the watercolor illustrations are captivating...every time you look at one of them you see something more. I'd give this book a 10 on a scale from 1 to 10 for elementary age students, but it speaks to us older readers as well.
