          5 out of 5 stars Packed with mind-expanding ideas.......2001-03-21

Speaking as a corporate communication professional, I can honestly say this is the most stimulating business book I've read. The premise is that organization leaders must go beyond simply seeking buy-in from their employees to a more iterative, interactive (and, ultimately, much more inspiring and effective) process of continually reinventing the organization. This argument is supported with great examples and enough detail to be actionable.

          5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended........2000-12-29

Mary Boone has authored a wonderful resource for implementing a knowledge-sharing culture in the Enterprise. Things to pay special attention to in the book include the ten key competencies for mastering new methods of communication and management, her insightful analysis of trends and obstactles affecting corporate communication, and the way she uses interviews with CEOs and executives to show you how others have implemented effective collaborative strategies.

On the lighter side of things, read her story about "George" in the "Get Over Yourself" chapter. She uses this story to point out how personality differences can be a show stopper to implementing innovation and promoting creativity. Furthermore, she explains how collaborative technologies can help bypass some of these differences.

            Book Description

In this volume organizational learning theory is used to analyse various practices of managing and facilitating knowledge sharing within companies. Experiences with three types of knowledge sharing, namely knowledge acquisition, knowledge reuse, and knowledge creation, at ten large companies are discussed and analyzed. This critical analysis leads to the identification of traps and obstacles when managing knowledge sharing, when supporting knowledge sharing with IT tools, and when organizations try to learn from knowledge sharing practices. The identification of these risks is followed by a discussion of how organizations can avoid them.

This work will be of interest to researchers and practitioners working in organization science and business administration. Also, consultants and organizations at large will find the book useful as it will provide them with insights into how other organizations manage and facilitate knowledge sharing and how potential failures can be prevented.

                  Book Description

Mineral Nutrition of Crops is the first book to grasp the complexity of the soil-water-plant-microbe interactions governing nutrient uptake and utilization by crops. You'll find it establishes a base at the single plant level, takes into account cells as well as plasma membranes of these cells, and then builds from there to include issues related to plant pathology, soil microbiology, soil chemistry, hydrology, breeding, and modeling. An understanding of these topics is paramount to designing sustainable nutrient management in agricultural landscapes as scientists face the challenge of providing food, feed, and fiber for increasing populations on decreasing amounts of agricultural land. Mineral Nutrition of Crops: Fundamental Mechanisms and Implications The first book on crop nutrition that covers topics from soil hydrology to molecular biology! The first book ever to elucidate so many different aspects of mineral nutrition of crops, Mineral Nutrition of Crops: Fundamental Mechanisms and Implications will allow you to grasp the complexity of the soil-water-plant-microbe interactions governing nutrient uptake and utilization by crops. By emphasizing a fundamental mechanistic approach, this book effectively complements the monograph Nutrient Use in Crop Production (The Haworth Press, Inc.). With Mineral Nutrition of Crops you will explore the many facets necessary to increase crop and pasture yields and minimize unwanted losses of nutrients to the environment. Mineral Nutrition of Crops covers a wide range of topics that span several scientific disciplines: agriculture, agronomy, botany, forestry, ecology, plant science, and soil science. From this book, you will gain vital knowledge required to understand the complexity of mechanisms and processes governing nutrient transport toward roots, including biological and chemical reactions influencing nutrient availability in the rhizosphere, uptake by root cells, long-distance transport toward grain, and the role of nutrients in metabolism. Also, you will explore issues relating to the following topics: - biology and chemistry of nutrient availability in the rhizosphere- kinetics of nutrient uptake by plant cells- role of mineral photosynthesis and yield formation- importance of seed nutrient reserves in crop growth and development- breeding crops for improved nutrient efficiency - significance of root size for plant production- monitoring water and nutrient fluxes down the profile. From Mineral Nutrition of Crops , you will gain the knowledge you need to understand and improve methods of crop growth and nutrition. Mineral Nutrition of Crops is an indispensable manual for anyone involved in the many aspects of growing crops.

                        Book Description

In social science terms, the `Arctic' is a relative, not an absolute concept, relating to several dimensions, such as constitutional and geographic status, remoteness, socioeconomic status, and demographic/anthropological factors. There is only one sovereign state with all its territory situated in the Arctic (Iceland), but many other areas of the globe have shared characteristics (Alaska, Yukon, Northwest Territories, areas of Norway, Sweden and Finland north of the Polar Circle, Greenland, the Faroes). Remoteness has to do with distance from the centre as well as accessibility, transportation and communication. Socioeconomically, the Arctic is characterised by a low population density, a fragile natural environment, and overwhelming economic dependence on one or a few resources, often coupled with income transfer. Demographically, the region has a large number of indigenous peoples, heavy immigration from the South (albeit only seasonal), minority problems, immigrant majorities, high infant mortality, low expected lifespan.
The present book is the first to present a large number of articles on the contemporary social, economic and political development in the Arctic, written by social scientists from Russia and the western world, many of whom live and conduct their research in the region. The book thus presents a much more complete picture of the modern world of the Arctic, offering a unique opportunity to compare what is happening in the different parts of the region.

Falcon Press has produced a number of "Best Easy Day Hikes" guides over the past few years. They usually feature hikes under 8 miles with an emphasis on shorter walks the whole family can enjoy. This guide to Phoenix hiking, however, should perhaps be called "Best Short Hikes" as the trails Green recommends are anything but easy. Quite apart from the weather in Phoenix, which makes hiking anytime from the beginning of May until mid October a real chore, many of these trails are incredibly steep. People used to hiking well graded trails such as the Pacific Crest Trail will be stunned at the number of hikes which gain close to (and in some cases more than) 1000ft/mile. At least a third of the trails described in the book exceed the maximum grade that modern trail designers use. This is at least partly due to the Phoenix Parks department simply picking which of the "use" trails they want to designate as official trails, rather than putting in the expense to build good ones.
That said, this guide is thorough, and it does include a number of hikes which even non-athletes would enjoy. Green's trail descriptions are helpful, especially in light of all the unofficial trails which dart in and about the designated routes of the Phoenix Mountains. Finally, his guide is to be commended for the excellent descriptions of getting to the trailhead. Non-residents wishing to hike in Phoenix will find his directions very easy to follow.
On the whole, a good book for winter conditioning hikes. I visit Phoenix regularly, but would not consider most of these trails in the summer.

                        5 out of 5 stars My favorite.......2007-08-04

I own several Chinese-English dictionaries. This is my favorite. In its layout, type size, sample sentences ( with pinyin), scope of vocabulary, breakdown of word components ( very helpful in understanding the meaning behind the word and the Chinese mindset) as well as many other features mentioned by other reviewers on this page this text is outstanding.

One feature which I love is the inclusion of traditional characters. Though the simplified characters form the basis of the book wherever the traditional character varies it is listed. Many dictionaries lack this vital resource.

I use this now as my preferred beginner and intermediate level Chinese-English dictionary.

4 out of 5 stars Useful, too many typos.......2007-07-10

This will accompany you into your second year of studies or so. As many reviewers have pointed out, you can really hammer new words in by reading the example sentences given under each headword.
There are two ways to use this:
                        1) Read it from A-Z, which needs a lot of discipline (it took me 4-5 months). This has the advantage that you can impress (or dumbfound) people by telling them that you're actually reading a dictionary for a bedtime story.
                        2) Look up new words that come up in your textbook. At a certain level, you will need something like "Cheng & Tsui Chinese-Pinyin- English Dictionary for Learners" (ISBN 0887273165) which has ten times the number of words but is hard to get.

One big flaw in Tuttle's dictioanry is the number of typos (see what I mean?). Sometimes wrong characters are given, but what's really annoying is the constant misspelling in pinyin. I have found up to 8 wrong pronounciations on a double page. A second edition should fix that. All in all, indispensable.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, lots of example sentences.......2007-01-27

This is an excellent beginner's dictionary. Its words are arranged alphabetically by Pinyin, so it is easy to find words if you know the pronunciation. An English-Pinyin section is provided so it's simple to find translations. Of course, since it is a Learner's dictionary, the included vocabulary is not intended to be completely comprehensive, but to be useful in common situations.

Perhaps the best part of this dictionary is that it is replete with example sentences for almost every word. You often need more than just the translation of a single word; you want to know how to use it, and in that respect this dictionary is exemplary.

                        5 out of 5 stars Simply Brilliant.......2006-02-23

I have used a few English - Chinese dictionaries now, and this is by far the best. The simplicity is supurb. It uses a larger font than many similar dictionaries, so you can see the Chinese characters with more clarity. The example sentences for each word are excellent. The Chinese is simple and eloquent, and for a beginner, it is a brilliant reference. The pinyin allows words in the examples to be referenced quickly. I haven't found a word in any example that isn't also in the dictionary (this is very impressive). The reference section at the back is also very well laid out. I have used this dictionary for well over six months now and I have tested it fairly well. Of several English - Chinese dictionaries that I own, this has become my first reference, firstly because of the usage examples, but also because it is just easier to use than the rest. I'd love an electronic version as well though - preferably for a PDA - so that I could click around the examples - it wouldn't replace the book though.

I would asolutely recommend this book for anyone learning Chinese.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensible Dictionary for Learners of Chinese.......2005-11-26

After returning from a conference in Beijing, I was looking around for a good dictionary and was so thrilled to find just what I was looking for - an intelligently written Chinese English Learner's Dictionary. I can positively say that I have learned more Chinese from this one book than any other book I have ever run across. I think the other reviewers have come to the same conclusion as me - the example sentences are truly great. I especially like the inclusion of so many new things, like internet language, modern society examples, history, poetry, and everyday activities. The short but very concise grammar section is just what a learner needs to know to fully utilize this book. I also like that the Chinese is in blue, the pinyin in bold black and the translations in italics. I am very ready now for an advanced learner's dictionary, and I think Professor Li Dong is the person to do a great job with this.

                        Book Description

Life was one big act for wrestling super star Steve Borden, a.k.a. Sting. On the home front, however, his marriage faltered on the brink of failure while he took the fast track in his wrestling career-and to a radical entertainer lifestyle, including an addiction to prescription drugs. Confessing his problems to his wife was the beginning of a process that brought the prideful, self-sufficient champion to his knees. It was to be the greatest wrestling match of his life, and God was taking him to the mat.

God had been planting seeds in Borden's life from the time he entered professional wrestling-his brother and sisters's conversions and witnesses, his family's prayers, the witness of wrestler Ted Dibiasi-and the peace and joy he saw in the lives of other Christians. Now, the confrontation by his wife, whom he didn't want to lose, plus the fear of life without his two young sons, made his fame and fortune worthless. He was humbled. That was in August 1998. Sting became a new man in Christ and his marriage was restored. Today, he drops scriptures into conversation as easily and naturally as he once dropped opponents in the ring. He still loves a challenge, but where he once relied on a fluorescent face and shocking stunts, he now tackles each challenge with a firm faith in Christ alone.

4 out of 5 stars The Main Event Of Life.......2007-03-07

Steve Borden was at the ultimate crossroads of his life.

As the character, Sting, he achieved iconic status in professional wrestling, one of a few performers who could tear the roof off of any arena in the world with his persona and signature finishing moves for victory.

But Sting couldn't assist Steve Borden on that day in August 1998, the ring makeup was off and it wasn't about the promoters & fans, it was about family. Addicted to prescription drugs and years of living a fast-lane lifestyle of a pop star, Steve Borden was on the verge of losing his wife and two young children.

It was his moment of truth.

The reader takes the journey with Steve Borden as he puts his ego aside and confronts the demons that are damaging not only his soul, but destroying the ones who love him the most.

This is a side of Steve Borden that you may not know about before picking up the book; it's how he got on his knees, raised his arms and looked up to the sky to accept the ultimate guidance in the main event of life.

OK, so maybe it DOESN'T deserve 4 stars, but it is one of the rare books that move you and that make you feel touched.

Just like Castaneda's Journey to Ixtlan book, it contains life story of a man who felt reformed by, in Borden's book, some Higher Good and faith in something UNmundane.
