As more of us come to understand the hefty personal price that often accompanies major professional success, fewer of us are willing to blindly sacrifice so much in order to attain it. How to Succeed in Business Without Working So Damn Hard is a combination pep talk and handbook for those facing this increasingly common dilemma, offering practical advice for sharpening our on-the-job performance so we can work more effectively and thus make more time for our outside lives. Robert J. Kriegel, an athletic coach, radio commentator, and coauthor of four previous personal and organizational behavior books including If It Ain't Broke... Break It!, mixes anecdotes from all manner of sources with insight from his own experiences to create this inspirational and easy-to-read guide. Quoting from a disparate collection of practitioners of the "less is more" philosophy ranging from New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and martial artist extraordinaire Bruce Lee to Monty Python alum John Cleese and retail pioneer John Wanamaker, he proposes precise strategies for reducing interference inflicted by notorious corporate time wasters like e-mail, meetings, and memos, along with specific approaches for injecting creativity--and boosting productivity accordingly--in common business situations. --Howard Rothman

Kriegel suggests that finding success in todays business world means breaking old habits and adopting new ideas that can dramatically increase performance levels. As conventional systems are challenged, dramatic new solutions are revealed, and everyone gets ahead without working so damn hard.

The average workweek is 60 hours and rising. These days, it seems people are working harder than ever before. But does putting in longer hours necessarily translate to into greater productivity? Robert J. Kriegel thinks not. All too often, individuals respond to a chaotic work environment by racing to meet deadlines, spinning their wheels, and missing opportunities to create positive change. Kriegel suggests that finding success in today's business world means breaking old habits and adopting new ideas that can dramatically increase performance levels, like having younger employees tutor the more senior, technology-phobic. As conventional systems are challenged, dramatic new solutions are revealed, and everyone gets ahead without working so damn hard.

Hors d'oeuvres rather than a seven-course dinner.......2007-06-04
In this volume as in previous volumes (notably If It Ain't Broke...Break It! co-authored with Louis Patler in 1992 and Sacred Cows Make the Best Burgers co-authored with David Brandt in 1996), Robert Kriegel offers a title, subtle, clever chapter titles, and a few insights that attract attention. That is not easy to do, especially now when there are almost 300,000 books in print that address many of the same issues Kriegel does.
Out of curiosity, as I read each of the 27 chapters, I attempted to formulate a key point or guideline for each, given the chapter's title. I found this to be an especially useful exercise, not because I learned anything new; rather, because I was reminded of what I already knew but tend to neglect. For example, without having as yet read the book, what do these chapter titles suggest to you?
"Rushing Slows You Down"
"Try Easier"
"Joe DiMaggio Never Bunted"
"Think Like a Beginner"
"Odd Couples Make Perfect Partners"
The chances are that what you come up with in response to these chapter titles is quite similar to what Kriegel recommends.
Of course, you already know that haste often makes waste. Kriegel observes that as a result of the emphasis on speed, "everyone has shifted into high gear, rushing, racing, and running. The workplace has been inflicted with hurry sickness. It's full-tilt boogie time. No slow dancing allowed. What's the problem? You're thinking. You want speed; you've got to speed up." Right? "Wrong! Speed doesn't come from rushing. The opposite is true. Rushing actually slows you down." This is only one example of several hundred observations that Kriegel shares throughout his book.
Note: Presumably William Shakespeare had a Latin expression in mind ("festina lente," make haste slowly) when he has Norfolk express this concern in Henry VIII:
"We may outrun
By violent swiftness that which we run at,
And lose by over-running."
My suggestion to those who consider purchasing this book (currently for only $11.66 from Amazon and Borders online) is that they read various Customer Reviews of Kriegel's books and then take advantage of the opportunity to sample some of the actual material in one or preferably several of them. Kriegel's style is not for everyone, nor is all of his advice immediately relevant to each person's own needs and interests.
We all know that there are times when we have to work "damn hard" and even then, the results are not always satisfactory. We also appreciate the importance of speed while recognizing that haste can "make waste." Of course, Kriegel knows all this. He has worked "damn hard" to develop his own career. I know him only by reading his books. He comes across as a dynamic, hard-charging, and charming person with a lively sense of humor. Never dull. Sometimes enlightening.
As other reviewers of Kriegel's various books have also suggested, however, he offers no head-snapping revelations and tends to recycle many of his unconventional opinions without developing them in depth. Stated another way, Kriegel offers more advice than analysis. If you need some thought-provoking perspectives and cage-rattling opinions on career development and especially productivity, this book could offer what you seek.
But if you need help with identifying and then addressing root causes that are limiting your success in business, there are other, more substantial sources to consider. For example, Tom Rath's recently published StrengthsFinder 2.0. Those who purchase a copy have exclusive access to a Web site (i.e. http://www.strengthsfinder.com/) at which valuable diagnostic exercises and results analysis are available - at no additional cost -- from the Gallup organization.
Damn Hard Cash Crunch & Start Living!.......2002-11-25
It has ever been a race to meet the deadlines, blindly following up the routine work pressures and sacrificing the wee hours of life in order to gain achievement to label n brand it as `success' - This is the major folly of most efficient people at workplace who pay a price missing wider opportunities to enhance better future. The game is all about Working wisely and not Damn Hard as the Author advice cool tips on how to succeed in Business with a shapened job performance pulling in the effective measures to take charge of total control of time schedules. Robert Kriegel's own experience has inspirational theme to add to productivity with less efforts. He focus on more efficiency reducing stress levels at workplace. With latest technology creeping in day in and out, cell phones, computers, internet demands more Time, money and energy levels to cope up with mounting work pressures. I personally feel, work never has a dead end but life's frustration do! And this is where Robert's insights are really helpful to be a success and re-think over working Damn hard as its endless. There is a time for let-go and just do nothing sometimes to rejuvenate oneself again and Robert's book is a tip on ice-berg `Work wonders, work wise ways' and there you scale higher to achieve in this economy crunch - all gains and no pains. I personally recommend this book for workoholic Businessmen and management leaders. A must read
Insightful!.......2002-11-12
If you still think you have to hammer yourself to get ahead, stop doing two things at once and listen to Robert J. Kriegel. The author, an expert in human performance and the psychology of change, says most people work too strenuously at a frantic pace that generates stress and reduces performance. You can perform better if you work smarter, even at 80% or 90% of your current buzz. If you've read human potential success books, some of this will sound familiar, but Kriegel focuses on becoming successful while having a full personal life. He quotes managers and employees, and outlines exactly what you should do. You're on your own figuring out what a 90% effort amounts to, but if you're a mid-level manager or executive who likes Kriegel's idea of winning-by-easing-up, we recommend that you somehow find the time to read his book.
Great Title, But..........2002-05-02
I'll admit it, the title got me. I probably read two business books a year, and this one didn't offer anything new. Most of it was new twists on the same old rules. It was not inspiring, motivating, or compelling.
misleading.......2002-03-10
The title is fulfilled in only the first two chapters or so. The rest of the book is management advice, which is decent advice (listen to your customer, etc), but I've read it elsewhere. I wanted to read what the title promised. Only happened on a minority of the pages. Disappointing.

A Recommended Read!.......2001-11-26
Dr. Carman's research is thorough, well written and concisely presented. A worthwile read for those who are interested in the discourses of agriculture, economics and politics.
"U.S. Agricultural Response to Income Taxation is the first extensive look at how income tax policy affects agriculture in the U.S. Surveying a significant body of research, Carman documents the effects of federal income tax on production and investment decisions in agriculture, farm size, and, prior to 1986's tax reform act, tax-shelter investments by non-farmers.
Guiding a reader through tax and farm policy with helpful flow charts and graphs, Carman discusses the impact of income taxes on land prices; decisions regarding machinery and equipment, orchards, and livestock; management practices that take advantage of cash accounting; capital gains tax and depreciation provisions; and tax equity. He also examines the interactions of income taxes with social security taxes, estate and gift taxes, and corporate income taxes.
This book concludes with a timely review of how various tax proposals, from a fiat tax to a consumption tax, might affect farmers and agriculture in the U.S." U of I press

Book Description
This successful introduction to behavioral research methods—written by two leaders in the field—provides step-by-step guidance through the processes of planning an empirical study, analyzing and interpreting data, and reporting findings and conclusions. It encourages readers to be analytical and critical, not only in interpreting research findings, but also in investigating what is behind the claims and conclusions in news reports of scientific results. While the primary emphasis is on behavioral and social research, a strong effort is made to connect these disciplines with the empirical reasoning used in other fields in order to underscore the unity of science.
The volume examines behavioral research and scientific method, creative ideas and working hypotheses, ethical considerations and guidelines, observation and measurement, design and implementation, describing data and making inferences, and statistical tests.
For those interested in an introduction to research methods.

Gary tells you what you need to know: what to pack, flies to use and how to find fish. With this guide you can plan a Baja trip, fly down, rent a car and find exciting fly fishing, either on your own or with a guide.
Customer Reviews:
Bare bones.......2002-06-15
It tends to ignore important information (whats the best way to get a Mexican fishing license?)while going over info that should be a no brainer to the most novice of angler, (Sharpen your hooks? Tip your skipper?)
Spanish fishing dictionary in the back is a nice touch. Location information is bare bones but adaquate. Maps are spare and the rest of the illustrations leave a lot to be desired. Particularly those of the fly patterns. All in all, it looks like something thrown together for a quick buck.
A Great How To Book on Fly Fishing Baja.......1998-12-19
A Great Addition to your Baja Library. For the fly fishing angler, Baja Sur has always been a big mystery--too remote, too exotic, too many kinds of fish to try for, and not enough real information to tell you EXACTLY where to go and how to fish. Now, multiple IGFA recordholder--Gary Graham-- has solved that mystery with his expertly-written book. Gary Graham has been fishing Baja Sur for over 20 years. He's the owner of the Orvis Endorsed "Baja-On-The-Fly" a Fly Fishing Expedition Company operating in Baja. Fly fishing with Brains, Wit, Charm and Soul........2003-06-23
Last week I bought a few books from Amazon and needed to spend a few dollars more to get free shipping. I did a quick search and came up with this book, Angling Baja, and bought it because it was about saltwater fly-fishing and because it was cheap.
I got the book in the mail yesterday and started reading snippets of it, and immediately, I was hooked.
Tonight I turned off the TV and spent the past three hours or so reading this little marvel. And a real gem it is too. Over the years I have occasionally found some damn fine writing that centered on sports, usually on boxing or fishing, or occasionally even on baseball. This book, this writer, Scott Sadil, is totally impressive.
I am a writer myself ( Birthday Boy, Happy Hour, Allergy-Free Gardening, Safe Sex in the Garden ) and like Sadil I've had a life of ups and plenty of downs, and like him I appreciate a good story, a full glass of whiskey, a nice fly rod, surfing, any kind of fish caught on a fly, and all sorts of other things...but read his book for that.
As soon as I finished reading tonight I decided I would get right on the computer and write a review of it. I'm hoping to write one that will compel you who happens to read this, to order this book. I used to believe that a truly fine writer would automatically become successful as soon as he (or she) was published...but that isn't true at all. Genius isn't always recognized by any means, and I speak of Sadil's writing here, not mine. (Iým recognized now, just not a genius Iým afraid). I Googled Scott Sadil, hoping to come up with thousands of hits but found a mere 312 references to him. I was hoping too, to discover that he'd published a novel, and was disappointed to see that he hadnýt, yet.
I did see that Sadil does have a second, newer book, Cast from the Edge: Tales of an Uncommon Fly Fisher. Iým going to buy that book too, and am almost certain that it will be terrific. But I really do want to see a novel from this writer. He has a writerýs eye for things, a writerýs ear that picks up the best tidbits of dialog, he has that novelistýs sense of where the meat is, and heýs got plenty of heart. Unless I miss my mark, expect a superb novel (maybe several?) from this fellow some day, and hopefully sooner rather than later.
Okay, in case you just like to fish and donýt give a hoot about really great writing, there are many very good surf-fishing tips here. I underlined a lot of pages and will be using them too. Scott Sadil takes his fishing seriously and has done plenty of it. For those of you, like me, who love fishing, nature, and good writing, ýcome on, get a copy of this book and read it! I swear I donýt know Scott Sadil and no one asked me to write this review. But his writing is that good, uncommonly so, and he deserves a far wider audience. ... this book is a steal!

A great book!.......2000-08-24
Definately one of the better books on fishing Baja. Well worth getting!
Great book for those who fish or want to fish Baja CA........1998-03-06
This is a really good book that describes what places to go and what to use for specific species. Has a nice layout of knots, and gives pointers on the various popular types of fly tackle used there. Could have included more fly patterns, but being a Baja fisherman myself, it wasn't a setback.
Book Description
Guide and excursion leader Gary Graham (Baja on the Fly) lays out the truth about fly fishing for snook in mangroves, off-shore marlin, calving whales from Alaska, beautiful birds, kayaking, even surfing. Photos, illustrations, maps, and travel information, this is "the Bible" for this unique region.

Excellent Mag Bay Fly Fishing Guide.......2007-05-16
This book is the most comprehensive and detailed guide to fly fishing Magdalena Bay, Mexico. With the help of this book, Gary Graham's office and his fishing guide Enrique Soto I experienced the natural wonder that is Magdalena Bay. Still pristine mangrove ecosystems and islands are rich in marine resources. This 132 mile long bay along Mexico's wild southern Pacific coast is not to be missed by the avid angler. Record snook caught on the fly here.

Just wish it was longer!.......2006-07-06
I just wish this book was longer! I learned a lot from such a small book.
Essential Knowledge for the True Reptile Lover.......2001-07-07
Consider yourself a true reptile lover? Then you should concerned about the well being of your pet. A healthy pet is a happy pet. Keep your pet well-fed and in good hygienic condition is essential. However, it is possible that the reptile may be suffering from parasites without our knowledge (such as through food). This book tells the pet lover what are the various parasites, what symptoms, what cures, etc. It is truly a good book on the topic.
The words, of what I would consider in ideal size, are printed on good quality "glossy" paper and very professional.
I have a copy and I think it's the best book available I can find about the topic. This book that's good in appearance and content. Get it if you are a true reptile lover.
Everyone herp owner should buy 2 of these books!.......2001-06-13
And, at Amazon's price, you can afford to buy two of them--one for you and one for your vet! I did! My vet can't thank me enough, and now I don't have to loan him my book every time I want him to see my veiled chameleon. It would be great to live in a big city with vets that specialized in herps/reptiles; but here in the rest of the real world, there are furry pet vets on every corner who can give excellent medical care to your reptiles and amphibians using Dr. Klingenberg's book.
Key features for you and your vet: 1. Medicine names, dosage for types/weight of different animals, means of administering, side effects, and uses. 2. Photographs of extracted worms and of microscope slides showing various micro-parasites & their eggs. 3. Sketch showing all the worms & parasites in relative size to each other. 4. Tips on "shot-gun" approach to parasite & disease treatment in wild-caught animals, discussion of various cures, discussion of the effects of diseases on your herp, and practical husbandry/keeping/handling/feeding info on how to prevent future reoccurances.
I got this book when I bought my first frog "just-in-case," but I never needed it, never used it, until this year when my chameleon was sick with worms. I was glad I had it and that is when I decided to buy a second copy for my vet's clinic. You can't afford to wait to buy this book until you need this book. You need it now while your animals are healthy!!!
All Amphibian & Reptile Keepers should have this book.......2001-02-24
And you should have it before you need it--as in, before you animal is sick. This is a complete and well done reference guide for those of us who don't need to know the vet manual's textbook explanations and can't afford to own those massive volume collections anyhow. It covers basic diagnosis, examination, equipment, internal and external parasites, medicines, dosages, tips for treating, how to administer meds to differnt types of animals, hygiene information, and, best of all to help your vet out, it contains photographs of microscope slides of what the nematoads or protozoans will look like and sketches of them for identification of relative size.
If you don't have an exotics or herp vet near you, this will help your furry pet vet help your herp. Believe me, I am thankful every day that I got this book when I didn't really need it because it meant the small town horse and dog vet clinic could see my old world chameleon and HELPED me, like they would not have been able to without this book.
Nicely done book, good for vet and pet owner.......2000-10-24
Roger Klingenberg is a well-recognized veterinary expert on reptiles and their parasites. His book is very well done and appropriate for both veterinarians and reptile owners. The combination of clear line drawings and excellent black and white photos clearly demonstrate how to recognize, diagnose and treat parasites of a variety of reptiles. The book is concise, clearly written and includes useful bibliography. For the price it can't be beaten!
