Insightful!.......2004-05-02
Motorola invented Six Sigma. This concise handbook promises to introduce readers to the history of Six Sigma, to explain Six Sigma's leadership requirements and to point the way for Six Sigma practitioners to go forward. It delivers admirably on these promises. Many Six Sigma books offer dense diagrams and mind-numbing descriptions of all of the minutiae that goes into the process improvement program. This book provides a broader perspective. It necessarily sacrifices much of the operational detail in order to present a good general introduction to the subject. This is not the book for managers who need a field-guide or an instruction manual to forge ahead with implementing a Six Sigma program. But for those who have heard of Six Sigma, wonder what it is about and want a good, basic, elementary explanation, we believe this book will serve nicely.
Revisionist and Vague.......2004-04-22
I read this book this morning over coffee. It's a quick read, but unfortunately I cannot say that it's worth anyone's time. The title makes it seem like it's appropriate for Six Sigma leaders, when in fact it's not. It's about half history and about half the "future of Six Sigma."
Let's start with the history. No where do the authors mention the Six Sigma Research Institute or Six Sigma Management Institute. Dr. Harry nor many of the key individuals associated with the program (Mario Perez-Wilson, the key individuals from any of the five companies that contributed to Six Sigma, etc.). If half of the purpose was to document the true history, it failed miserably. It appears revisionist to me since it leaves out so much of the history. There are other sources on the web that I've read that are better.
Regarding the "future of Six Sigma," it's ok. It throws out a bunch of different vague ideas that you (the leader) will need to figure out how to do. Most of the "future" ideas are in fact being used today by many, many companies. For instance, using a balanced scorecard idea with Six Sigma -- hello...many, many companies have been doing this for 5 years already. There were some other ideas concerning Black Belts, but they're not even worth mentioning.
All in all, it was a quick read but provided little benefit. I wish the authors would have applied a Six Sigma process to their topic selection and research for the book.
Great Balance of Business Case and Detail.......2003-04-24
I really enjoyed this book. I thought McCarty did an outstanding job of presenting a business case for six sigma with a clear, straightforward discussion of how and why businesses should implement it. Barney's detailed explanation of the statistical nitty-gritty of six sigma provided an excellent follow-up to McCarty's piece. Barney's level of detail was just right for the book - enough to show the reader the "meat" of six sigma statistical foundations without the weighty specifics.
The New Six Sigma.......2003-04-24
I really enjoyed this book. I thought McCarty did an outstanding job of presenting a business case for six sigma with a clear, straightforward discussion of how and why businesses should implement it. Barney's detailed explanation of the statistical nitty-gritty of six sigma provided an excellent follow-up to McCarty's piece. Barney's level of detail was just right for the book - enough to show the reader the "meat" of six sigma statistical foundations without the weighty specifics.

A Quick Read.......2003-03-26
This is a very informative book that can be read in a about one to two hours. It isn't as in-depth as I thought it would be but it certainly provides some updated and interesting information on Six Sigma. My advice for people who may buy this book is to purchase this book along with 'Leading Six Sigma', 'Lean Six Sigma', and if you are new to Six Sigma, 'Sailing Through Six Sigma with CD' for an overall appreciation of Six Sigma. This is not a book that discusses the DMAIC model or the actual statisitics involved in Six Sigma in any great length so if that is what you're looking for you need to look elsewhere. However, if you're looking for some of the most up to date information on Six Sigma this book is well worth the price.

This volume is the fifth in a series of publications produced over the last five years on the ecology of tropical savannas. The volumes arise from work undertaken by the Responses of Savannas to Stress and Disturbance (RSSD) Program, under the auspices of the International Union of Biological Sciences (IUBS) Decade of the Topics Programme, co-sponsored by the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Program. Savannas cover just under one third of the world's land surface and contain a large and rapidly growing proportion of the world's population as well as the majority of its rangelands and livestock. Most savannas are experiencing increasing pressures from demographic and economic changes that have increased dramatically over the past few decades. In addition to the changing patterns in demography and economics, the forecasts of global warming further alert us to the most important challenge - to conserve and manage wisely the savanna ecosystems of the world, and it is this which forms the basis of the work of the RSSD Program through the promotion of scientific research and communication. This fifth publication is comprised of research papers presented at the RSSD's international symposium held in Darwin, Australia, in 1988. The papers address the Australian perspective and intercontinental comparisons and come from an international, expert authorship. Extremely limited in its scope and validity.......2007-06-24
This book is so bad I had to look through the whole thing to fathom just how narcissistic and narrow the author's approach to anger actually was. Obviously, the topic is important; humans get angry, and if techniques for managing and modulating anger were better held within my own grasp, my life would be be smoother and happier. What's shocking about this shallow treatment is that it begins with a trite epigraph (The best time to manage anger is before it happens) attributed to WDG. I've never read a book where the author quoted himself before starting the book. It gets worse, since over half the anecdotes of recovery from anger are drawn from the author's own life. In the final chapter, one of the few sources for anecdotes, John, is revealed to be a beard, since "If you've read this book from cover to cover, you realize John's story is my story."

I have lived with anger my entire life. I was fianlly able to recognize my problem through this book. I felt like someone finally understood how hard it was to let go of the anger.

I am angry I wasted money on this book. The book description IS the book. I found very little here to apply to my life. Anger is not good for you. Duh! Why would I even bother to buy a book. The anecdotes were more annoying than anything. Save your money.
IF YOU EVEN THINK YOUR PROBLEM IS ANGER, THIS BOOK'S FOR YOU.......2000-02-09
If you have ever considered your problem may be anger, this is the right book for you. I am 30 years old and was the type that would be firm when upset, but not (I thought) too angry. I also had occasional violent blow ups.(3-5 time per year, for about 15 years) I was on course to destroying my relationship by casting blame and not assuming any. This book does two things well. First it enables you to determine what type of anger you have and secondly how to deal with it. This book is very well written and by the end of the first chapter I felt confident that I could defeat my anger. It has been several months now and I am able to express my anger constructively and have regained my life. Having dealt with this problem has lifted a load I never even knew existed. Even my co-workers say I seem much happier and they now enjoy working with me. This book will help you or your loved ones live a happier, healthier life at any age. You can do it!
Excellent source to learn how to control your anger........1999-10-19
I used to have a very violent temper. I would get so angry that I would actually black out and not remember anything I said or did. This became a problem as you can see. I bought this book and it saved my life. I took what this book said and used it and I have had no problems since.

Description:
Objectives: To examine the natural flow of (a) pre- and post-competition temporal patterns of intensity, frequency and daily mean level (a composite measure of frequency and intensity) of basic emotions and (b) frequency of reports of competition-related and competition-extraneous concerns across time. Method: The Experience Sampling Method (ESM) was used, which permits the monitoring of the spontaneous flow of daily affective and cognitive experiences in the athletes' habitual environment. Thirty-nine male elite martial artists were assessed on 12 basic emotions and concerns at five random times a day across 1 week before and 3 days after a competition. On the competition day, the participants were assessed 1h before and immediately after the contest. Results: Different patterns of change were observed for intensity and frequency of emotions and frequency of competition-related and competition-extraneous concerns. Frequency of fear was the most reactive affective component to competition vicinity. Increased frequency of some outcome-contingent negative emotions persisted for three days post-competition. The presence of negative emotions was the lowest in the post-competition days. Conclusions: This study confirms that, for a better understanding of the process of competitive stress, monitoring of both intensity and frequency of a wide range of emotions is needed. This research area may also benefit from analysing possible psychological spill-over between sport, competition and other life domains.

A Book for General Knowledge of Mechanics.......2005-10-01
This book isn't about aircraft knowledge about electronics, air, oil and hydrolics. It's a book about mechanical knowledges. Although that's not the right book I actually want, it's quite a good book.
Waste of money.......2001-09-26
I have an A&P license and bought this book for my son. It is a good example of quality sacrificed to feed someone's bottom line. Illustrations and figures in this book are of such poor quality that they appear to have been reduced on a copy machine, causing important details to disappear into blotches of ink. Reference tables have been reduced to the point where they are unreadable without a magnifying glass. There is no section on welding. If this is the only reference handbook on the market, then you're stuck with it -- but I sent mine back. Don't buy it.
