Professor Landes’s study, Technological Change and Industrial Development in Western Europe, 1750–1914, first appeare as a chapter in volume VI of the Cambridge Economic History of Europe. He has now extended it by adding a full-scale analysis of modern industrial Europe from the First World War to the 1960s. In his new Introduction, Professor Landes discusses the characteristics, progress, and political, economic and social implications of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, France and Germany. He raises the general question: why was Europe the first to industrialize? Jack of all Trades, Master of None?.......2005-01-14

"It was the Industrial Revolution, writes historian David S. Landes, "that initiated a cumulative, self sustaining advance in technology whose repercussions would be felt in all aspects of economic life." He goes on to demonstrate that the Industrial Revolution had a birth, maturation, and decline. According to Landes, European nations reached these three stages of development at different intervals thus evoking varying degrees of economic progress and growth. In a work that might be deemed purely economic history, Landes treads that fine line between these two academic disciplines. As an historian, Landes has faired quite well. As an economist, however, Landes' findings could lead one to ponder: is it possible to be an expert in both fields? Landes has utilized a chronological method in an effort to answer the aged old question: why did the Industrial Revolution take place in Western Europe when it did? The author agrees that Great Britain was the initiator, or leader of the Industrial Revolution, and all other countries followed suit with varying degrees of economic growth. Landes credits England's natural geographic infrastructure of navigable rivers along with its social compatibility (this last point raised an eyebrow, as England has always been known for its rigid class divisions) as the basis for Britain's early industrialization. The chapters illustrating how England's early rural cotton cottage manufacturing developed into an intricate network of textile factories, the affects of imperial acquisitions and colonialism, and the evolutionary process of technology in the form of industrial machinery, made for a compelling read. The author also explores such social phenomenon as the Protestant work ethic, the concept of rationality, and the human tendency to control nature as contributing factors in Britain's eventual industrialization and modernization. Landes handled these more abstract interpretations admirably. The author utilizes a plethora of sources to support his argument. From the early writings of Adam Smith and Max Weber to a wide range of economic journals and published material, Landes has synthesized his argument credible. The author makes use of some tables, especially when comparing Europe's iron and steel production, however, his tendency to express his statistics in a narrative form instead of utilizing more tables and graphs can be confusing at times. The total absence of maps is another hinderance.Landes has put forth a valiant effort but perhaps his plate was too full. If the old adage of "jack of all trades, master of none," holds true here, one might mull over where Landes' strengths lie. In a book full of economic theory, sociology, demographics, statistical data and last but not least, history, is it possible for a scholar to be proficient in all these areas? For those proponents of the departmentalization of the Humanities, Landes' work will stir some reaction. As for this reviewer, I enjoyed the book and would recommend it to those wishing to delve deeper into this fascinating era of European history. Keep a pot of coffee brewing.

The way economics shapes political societies.......2001-02-08

The task professor Landes have tried to achieve, and what he produces along it, is more important than that whole consistency of his work. Professor Landes makes economic history, not only describing historical processes but analyzing them with key concepts taken from basic economic theory.

Technological change creates opportunities for economic growth, but it could not explain, by itself, the whole historical process. Legal and political environment is needed to make real the economic growth that technological change makes possible. Even though, into the process, some elites and some social colectivities could see losses of power, income, and social recognition, and new models for colective and individual behaviour could upsurge. Professor Landes work explains the whole complexity of the big trends, of historical process, supported by the technological facts, the economic facts are consequence of this, and the economic theory we knew in sixties, and based on rigorous work on primary and secondary sources. His work shows, too, how the economic trends produced qualitiative consequences that economic theory could not predict because men in historical time, above all, are political entities more than economical entities. The national european states, and the national feelings, from the elites to the common man, sometimes peacefully, sometimes with social struggle, have given an specific path, and specific reactions, to the economic incentives that come from market (national and abroad) and from former regulation. The economic system and the politics produced, to each other, opportunities, setbacks, and limits.

My personal view on the value of this work is the science of history could use theoretical tools from other social sciences, but economics has to use history and its works to show better the accuracy of their concepts and method.

A very good work on economic history.

Good background reading, if slightly outdated.......2000-11-30

The Unbound Prometheus was published in 1969, so it is not exactly the latest call about economic history since 1750. But Landes makes a very good job at summarizing the basics about the most important economic issues of the past two hundred years: the role of market integration and technological change in Industrial Revolution (though, for the latter, see also Mokyr's Lever of Riches), the role of free trade in the mid-19th century Europe and world, the role of after-WW1 peace settlement in causing the Great Depression, the size and impact of the Marshall Plan and other reconstruction plans after WW2. However, if you are looking for detail on any of the topics, then Landes is, perhaps, not the right book for you (on the other hand, this text is usually used as a background reading for university courses in European Economic History).

I read this book, here in Brazil.This book is good and easy to read.The main idea of this book is that while Europe (and also its son:USA) worked, Islam and China did nothing.In Islam, the religion bought and today bringhs everything linked to VII Century, in the Dark Ages.In China, bad government stoped everything.
This book has some failures.One of them are the anti-catholic prejudices, that the author has.At the conclusion, the author claims that in Brazil, catholics are servants to the protestants.Nonsense.In Brazil such as every place of latin America, protestantism is almost the same as pentecostalism.And no other religious group is so poor , criminal and luckless in all latin America, as the protestants or the pentecostals, if you prefer to name them.
There's even jokes about protestantism here in Brazil.One joke: A poor + a bible = another protestant.Another joke:a crook + a temple = another uselesss pentecostal cult.

A Solid Textbook Well Adapted to the Undergraduate Market.......2005-08-21

A previous reviewer wrote "the cases are so below style and quality typical to Harvard Business as to be embarrassing..they read like teenage locker room novellas."

I would agree that the case studies in this book are not on the same level typical to Harvard Business, but than I do not think that was the author's intention. I have used Harvard Business cases frequently and find they are more effectively and appropriately used when teaching graduate students.

The authors have written a pretty solid textbook which is well adapted to the typical undergraduate reader in communication.

The authors have organized the cases in sections: organizational culture, virtual communication in organizations, teamwork and group processes, decision-making and problem-solving, the individual and the organization, and diversity in organizational communication.

In some sections the case studies are scattered on a number of divergent fronts, and the text might be strenghted by greater conceptual unity and coherence across the case studies contained in each section. The briefing paper which precedes each section could be expannded to furnish greater conceptual integration.

I suspect this conceptual integration is more apparent if one uses Shockley-Zalabak's basic organizational communication textbook in conjunction with the cases studies text.

But overall I think the typical undergraduate will find this textbook readable and acessible

The IRM available from the publisher in digital form is particularly outstanding.

Engaging descriptions of organizational life.......2004-07-16

This is a terrific book! It's impossible to sum up succinctly, but I'll try. It contains 33 cases written by professors of organizational communication at schools ranging from Princeton University to the University of Southern California and just about every major center of communication studies in between.

Each case takes the reader into mind and heart and daily life of a person at work. Unlike the Harvard cases, which usually concern dilemmas faced by high-level business leaders, these protagonists range from new hires to retirees, and include women and men working in every kind of department, from manufacturing to IT to sales, engaged in turningpoint talk in face-to-face dyads and world-wide computer networks, in firms across the planet, some for-profit, some not-for-profit, in an astounding variety of industries.

The cases are well-written; the reader hovers over the action, hearing the dialogue, examining the documents, experiencing the dilemmas, considering the options, knowing the tactics, and discovering the outcome of the situations described.

Issues of organizational climate, teamwork, conflict, diversity, decision-making, training, leadership, change, and culture (among others), are included, and well-indexed. A comprehensive teacher's guide is available on line for faculty unused to using case studies to teach ideas.

Reading this book is a thought-provoking pleasure for the lay reader and would delight college students who know (or are told) the theory, but want to know how those ideas apply to day-to-day life in a wide range of organizational contexts. I highly recommend it!

Hyped title ý poor content.......2004-05-20

I wanted cases for my communications students, and when I saw this title I obtained a copy based upon the author's website comments. Hype. All hype. I circulated the book to (female) associates to determine if I was missing something. According to them, I was "excessively kind -- and please do not waste my time with pretense like this again."

BUYER BEWARE
The cases are so below style and quality typical to Harvard Business as to be embarrassing. They read like teenage locker room novellas. As is all-too-typical in academe, the book serves one purpose: to help the author keep their job. This text does not help in "understanding the communication process." It is too bad these are such poor cases. My students could use something useful. This is not it. Avoid this text.

"How can we increase the production and harvest of living marine resources in the new millennium? Bridging potentials and environmental constraints". This was the theme of the 1st Maricult Conference arranged in Trondheim, Norway in June 2000 in connection with termination of the Norwegian research programme Maricult (1996-2000; www.maricult.org).

It would be impossible to tabulate fully the debt modern psychology owes to Sigmund Freud. Freud's theories of the unconscious, the role of parents in personality development, psychological defense mechanisms, psychosomatic symptoms, body image, and sexual behavior patterns, to name just a few, continue to exert a powerful influence on most contemporary schools of psychological thought. Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Michael D. Echanis', "Basic Stick Fighting for Combat." This book is directly influenced by the Korean martial art of Hwarang Do and its current Grandmaster Joo Bang Lee, who Echanis had studied under before his untimely demise in Nicaragua.

This book along with its two companion volumes, "Knife Self-Defense for Combat" and "Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat," were not initially released to the general public, but instead were only available to certified and recognized self-defense instructors. These books were originally intended to be military training manuals for the various elite units in the United States military. These were units such as the Special Forces, Army Rangers, Navy Seals, etc.

This volume, like the other two in this series, starts out with a brief section on the history of Hwarang Do and its relationship to hand-to-hand combat. This is followed by another brief section that looks at the theory and internal dynamics which make up this very impressive art.

Introduction:

Principles of Stick Fighting:

a. Proper Grip

Your grip should be relaxed yet firm, it should not be really tight like a vise.

b. 3 types of strikes

1. Thrusting
2. Snapping/Shocking
3. Whipping

c. Visualization and Breathing

This section, although rather brief for my liking, shows you how to use visualization and breath control in order to enhance your skill with the stick. This is effective not only for the stick, but any weapon that you may employ against an attacker.

d. Focus of Attack

The focus of your attack will generally be confined to one of five general target areas. They are the top of the head, side of the neck, the wrist, the body, and the leg below and including the knee.

e. Vital Points

Although this particular section is rather vague, the author does illustrate a drawing of a man with the vital points clearly marked on it.

Baton:

a. Principles

The author gives you the basic principles that you need to adhere to in order to learn how to use a stick properly and safely during practice and during an actual self-defense encounter.

b. Basic Blocks and Strikes

Through the detailed use of photographs and brief yet detailed text, the author takes you through the basic strikes and blocks used when utilizing a baton.

c. Combat Applications

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and his assistants take you through several different examples of how to use a baton during an armed and also unarmed self-defense encounter.

Short Stick or Double Short Stick:

a. Principles

The author gives you the basic principles that you need to adhere to in order to learn how to use the double short sticks properly and safely during practice and during an actual self-defense encounter.

b. Combat Applications of the Short Stick and Double Short Stick

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and his assistants take you through several different examples of how to use the double short stick during an armed and also unarmed self-defense encounter.

Snapping Short Stick:

a. Principles

The author gives you the basic principles that you need to adhere to in order to learn how to use the snapping short stick properly and safely during practice, and during an actual self-defense encounter.

b. Grasping

In this section, the author teaches you how to properly grasp the stick.

c. Blocking

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and his assistants take you through several different examples of how to block correctly using the snapping short stick.

d. Striking

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and his assistants take you through several different examples of how to strike correctly using the snapping short stick.

e. Combat Applications

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and his assistants take you through several different examples of how to use the snapping short stick during an armed and also unarmed self-defense encounter.

Cane:

a. Principles

The author gives you the basic principles that you need to adhere to in order to learn how to use the cane properly and safely during practice, and during an actual self-defense encounter.

b. Combat Applications

Through the detailed use of photographs and a somewhat brief yet detailed section of text, the author and the supreme grandmaster of Hwarang Do, Joo Bang Lee, takes you through several different examples of how to use the cane during an armed and also unarmed self-defense encounter.

This book, like the other two in the series, does an exceptional job of explaining the techniques described within through detailed written descriptions and the use of clear and concise photographs and illustrations. The only thing that I would like to have seen a lot more of in this particular manner would have been some close-up shots during various phases of certain techniques.

Different is good! It's basic, but insightful!.......2005-04-24

Basic Stick Fighting for Combat

This is an interesting little book (192 pages) about stick fighting. It was originally written as a training manual for special forces. And, it was an early book on stick fighting. To the best of my knowledge this book was published before Arnis (and other PMA) became popular. The late Michael D. Enhanis was highly trained in the Korean art of Hwa Rang Do and this book represents stick fighting techniques derived from that training.

The book covers fighting techniques with four varieties of sticks, basically sticks of various lengths (though there is some overlap in the lengths). First, the Baton with a length range from 18 to 36 inches (the pictures seem to indicate the author uses a baton in the 28-31 inch range). Some techniques would be more difficult with the shorter baton. Second, the Short Stick with a length range from 12 to 30 inches (the pictures seem to indicate the author uses a short stick in the 18-20 inch range). The majority of the techniques presented use double short sticks, though some single short stick techniques are demonstrated. Third, the Bone Breaker is an 11 inch oak stick of 1 inch diameter. This stick was the most interesting to me and the techniques are up close and personal. Fourth, the Cane. The author presents some uses of the cane I had not seen before.

The author presents blocks, strikes, and advanced techniques with each length of weapon. The reader will not find much of the "entangling" techniques of stick fighting present in many of the stick fighting books, though the author does utilize some basic trapping. The techniques all contain some degree of lethality - it was, after all, a special forces training manual. I did feel that some of the techniques bordered on the eccentric. Not all of them seem to me to utilize the best economy of motion. I have no doubt that the author could make these techniques work. I just think I would choose different combinations in some of the sequences for a different rhythm and flow. And, the author writes that each person should do just that.

So, the variety of weapons presented is a plus in this book, even if that reduces the total quantity of techniques for any one weapon discussed. The reader will gain a good basic understanding of how these weapons can be used. And the author states that his goal is to provide a basis from which the stick fighter can further research and develop his skills.

A side note, the author does discuss in brief the religious and internal aspects of Hwa Rang Do. As well, the "code" of the Hwa Rang Do warriors is provided. The book gives some brief history of the art and Korea as a whole (I think about 10 pages). It is interesting reading for those who don't already know the information.

If you're already into sticking fighting, especially the PMA, this book probably won't hold much for you, except to show you how the Korean approach may differ from the approach you currently use. Particularly interesting was the reverse grip use of the Short Stick. It reminded me a little of the reverse grip use of the Japanese Sai.

Anyway, if you're interested in stick fighting, this book will give you some information that you probably won't find in the PMA schools. Give it a read and decide for yourself. Personally, I'll gain from practicing these techniques, particularly the Bone Breaker techniques. I hope you enjoy this book and learn from it what you can.

The Legend of Echanis.......2004-02-16

Echanis is a Legend in the Martial Arts world and many other Martial Artist are very, very, jealous of him even though he has been dead since 1978. While doing CIA Black Bag Ops he was killed in a airplane over Nigaragua by a planted Terrorist bomb on the plane.

The reason so many are jealous of Bruce Lee is because of his "Hollywood" connections and the reason so many were and still are jealous of Echanis is because of his "real", "Military" connections.

I have read all of his books including the infamous "Black Book" Knife Fighting and Knife Throwing for Combat which I use to read over and over again before my Martial Arts classes. O'Hara Publications took that book off the market because it was too detail and graphic. Political Correctness kills another great book, it is the best out of all Echanis books.

Echanis was a great Martial Artist and Basic Stick Fighting for Combat is a Great book!

Since the late 1970's, I have studied Mr. Lee's "Way of the Intercepting fist."

I have the original of this book from 1978, I have not read it in over 20 years. This too, was also Mario's book. Good book that shows using various small sticks (and canes). cool book.

Leaving aside the fact that the author lied through his teeth (e.g. he never actually studied Hwa Rang Do - he offered the Lee brothers some ink and they gave him a faked history) this stuff is about as inefficient as any stick fighting book I've ever seen. Try Marinas' Panandata, Mark Wiley, the Presas brothers, Leo Giron or Ray Galang for stick stuff. You'll be much better off.

Professor Gee is easily one of the most exciting literacy/language/education/discourse thinkers of our time. This book is perfect for those thinking of researching the ways that language/talk/discourse reflect cultural/political/societal models. Gee is always on the cutting edge of this kind of research, and if you want to know how he does it, buy this book!

A fine introduction.......2001-03-13

Reading the book does not require prior knowledge and training in linguistics or social theory because the book was written at the really introductory level. The author has intentionally stayed away from using too many technical jargons and dumping too many names on his readers. Thus, it is actually a very good introduction for students who haven't had prior experiences of reading linguistic stuffs. While the book does not deal with discourse analysis deeply, it certainly can provide an entry point for people who would like to know more about discourse analysis.

Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston, was Canada's sixth Governor General (1888-1893). Historians have traditionally been satisfied to draw a brief timeline of Stanley's life to serve as the man's biography. But such an oversimplified timeline does a great disservice to the stories that developed around Stanley's term as Canada's Governor General, to the man himself and, of course, to the story behind affixing his name to the Stanley Cup. Stanley possessed a strong vision and expert diplomatic skills at a time when the very existence of Canada was in question. When the aggressive policies of the US threatened war with Canada and when domestic strife began to pull apart the nation, Stanley remained loyal to Canada and aided Prime Minister John A. Macdonald in captaining the Dominion's safe passage through treacherous political waters. After witnessing a hockey game at the Montreal Winter Carnival in 1889, Lord Stanley and his family were smitten. Just as the game had made an impression on the Stanleys, conversely, the Stanleys made a terrific impact on the game. Hockey became, in large part due to the Governor General's direct stamp of approval. In 1892, Lord Stanley announced that he would donate a trophy for the amateur hockey championship of Canada. The next year, the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association became the first recipients of the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup, better known as the Stanley Cup. By that time, however, Lord Stanley had returned to England and assumed the family role as Earl of Derby. Yet, Lord Stanley could not have predicted the immense impact his gift to hockey would have. Young men grow up dreaming of one day hoisting the Stanley Cup in triumph and having their name inscribed on sports most cherished trophy. Still, Stanley's less-visible legacy is equally as important to the nation and rightfully deserves to be shared and celebrated.
