Book Description
In this lively and hard-hitting book José Bové and François Dufour recount the dramatic events of their famous demonstration against McDonald's and examine the issues behind the resulting campaign. Their proposal for an alliance of farmers, consumers and ecologists to promote public awareness received enthusiastic support at the WTO protests in Seattle.
Customer Reviews:
We Don't Want to be Assimilated!!!!!.......2003-03-14
Interesting to read firsthand about the work of these courageous activists from France - Jose Bove is certainly not the leader of a group of country bumpkins or Luddites as I had inferred from the popular media. This book covers personal backgrounds & histories of their involvement in various farmers unions , these guys are effective organizers who know their business and also working farmers with a feeling and respect for the land, quality of life and food are goals of paramount importance.
Divided into 3 parts:
1st - The McDonald's story and other planned protests told from the viewpoints of both Bove & Dufour. The McDonald's incident took place in response to import duties imposed on Roquefort cheese in retaliation for EU's refusal to import American hormone treated beef. Not a random or spontaneous incident but a well planned out protest carried out to attract public attention. Both Dufour & Bove have been involved more than 30 years in various movements for change in France.
2nd - History of intensive farming over the last 50 years in France, farming economics, factory farms. Covers topics here such as genetically modified crops, mad cow disease, environmental destruction caused by intensive pig farming
3rd - Farming as a global issue world trade organization and "free trade", protest in Seattle, growth of a movement, a new vision.
An inspiring read for those interested in food, farming and globalization.
It's not just France.......2001-08-29
Since August 12, 1999, Bové has been an icon of the movement against "free" trade and the WTO. It was then that he and nine other members of the French Farmers Union (Confédéracion Paysanne) dismantled a MacDonald's restaurant in their hometown of Millau, loaded the pieces on their tractors and carted them to the local police station. MacDonald's was targetted both as a symbol of corporate domination of public life and as a leading vendor of what the French call malbouffe, food that is not worthy of being eaten.
The actual target of this protest was a 100% duty imposed on Roquefort cheese by the United States. The WTO had ruled that the French were violating trade laws by refusing to import U.S. hormone-fed beef, allowing the U.S. to impose punitive tariffs on Roquefort and 78 other French products. Bové and his fellow defendants raise sheep that produce milk for Roquefort cheese.
The MacDonald's action by the Farmers Union lit the imagination of thousands of activists and was one of the major events leading to the protests against the WTO meeting in Seattle a few months later. Bové and Dufour were in Seattle as part of the official French agricultural delegation but their official status did not deter them from further political theater. They distributed 500 pounds of his Roquefort cheese at the Pike Place Market and they marched arm-in-arm with farmers and AFL leaders at the head of the big march of November 30. In their book Dufour says, "It was an important signal: that in the first mass demonstration of trade unionists and ecologists, farmers were at the front. It's a particularly powerful image for Third World countries, where the majority of the population are farmers or live in rural areas."
In stepping forward as spokesmen against corporate domination of trading rules in general and agriculture in particular, Bové and Dufour have exposed themselves to personal attacks by the major media outlets. They are usually portrayed as nationalistic bumpkins, Luddites or egotistical publicity hounds. Their book puts the lie to much of that. Philosophically they are in favor of policies supporting regional food self-sufficiency--as opposed to policies which promote agribusiness. Why, they ask, should WTO regulations be imposed on all food when less than 5% is actually exported? It is clear that they have spent decades working on agricultural policy; much of the book describes how shifting farm policies since World War II have driven the small farmers out while favoring industrial agriculture dependent on long-distance transportation, monoculture, massive inputs of chemicals and over-reliance on the major agricultural and food distribution companies. Bové and Dufour argue that this is destroying the rural ecology, throwing farmers out of work and putting the world's food supplies at risk of catastrophic diseases (e.g., mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease, which are currently threatening European herds) or of callous market manipulation. Even without such disasters, the quality of food is deteriorating and taking traditional culture with it. The WTO had not specifically addressed agriculture before the Seattle round, but its proposals for Seattle clearly favored agribusiness' interests over those of small farmers and of less developed countries. This conflict led to the internal failure of the WTO in Seattle.
Bové points optimistically to "[b]uilding on the international gains won in Seattle." What his critics saw as a hodgepodge of dissimilar interests without a clear agenda, he sees as a new nonideological politics that succeeded in stopping the WTO . He suggests that the different viewpoints within the opposition to the WTO are exactly the point: local interests should not be steamrollered by the one-size-fits-all approach of the free-traders. Further trade agreements will require openness to public scrutiny. Although The World Is Not For Sale emphasizes globalization's impact on farming and rural areas, it also touches on the dangers of genetic modifications of plants and animals and on globalization's erosion of human rights--including trade union rights--and cultural diversity. The Farmers Union is not opposed to foreign trade agreements like the WTO, but insist that they must incorporate protection for workers, culture and the environment. The book offers tentative proposals on achieving these protections.
Book Description
Each chapter of this book takes as its starting point a myth, a legend, a story or a fable, and explores its contemporary relevance for a world of globalization, organizations and, consumerism. Each contributor is inspired by a relatively short but rich text which is then used as a springboard for an analysis of contemporary social and organizational realities. The idea behind this book is that by looking at contemporary society through the prism of pre-modern narratives, certain features emerge in sharp relief, while others are found to be entrenched in societies across the ages. The texts that have inspired the authors of this collection differ - some are myths, some are stories, one is a children's tale. The origins of these texts differ, from the scriptural to the folkloric, from high art to oral tradition. What all the texts have in common is a distinct and compelling plot, a cast of recognizable characters with an ability to touch us and speak to us through the ages, and, above all, a powerful symbolic aura, one that makes them identifiable landmarks in storytelling tradition. The driving force behind this project was each author's love for their narratives. It is not an exaggeration to say that the book is a true labour of love. The chapters are introduced by the editor and are arranged in four parts, each with it own introduction. The chapters in each part spring from stories that share a narrative character, and are labelled as Knowledge Narratives, Heroic Narratives, Tragic Narratives, and Reflecive Narratives. The book offers a set of probing, original and critical inquiries into the nature of human experience knowledge and truth, the nature of leadership, power and heroic achievement, postmodernity and its discontents, and emotion, identity and the nature of human relations in organizations. Different chapters deal, among other things, with the nature of leadership in the face of terrorism, friendship, women's position in organizations, the struggle for identity, the curse of insatiable consumption and the ways the hero and heroine are constructed in our times.

Book Description
Overexploitation of natural resources and excessive chemicalization of agriculture have led to poor sustainability of farm production. Indiscriminate use of agricultural chemicals has resulted in problems of pest resurgence and development of resistance on the one hand and has posed serious problems of environmental contamination through residues in food chain on the other hand. The importance of achieving food production through the use of ecofriendly sustainable pest management techniques is being realized more and more in the recent past. Eminent scientists from different research institutions have looked into this aspect seriously and have come up with many enlightening suggestions compiled together in this book.

Description:
The effect of compost application on weed, fungal, and insect pest management in apple orchards was investigated from 1999 to 2001. Composted poultry manure was applied in June 1999 to half of two small research orchards which had previously received little or no management. The compost provided weed control for 1 year after application. There was no effect of compost on apple scab (Venturia inaequalis) infection. In a laboratory experiment, growth of the brown rot fungus (Monilinia fructicola) was significantly slower on a compost substrate than a sterilized compost substrate. The compost significantly affected arthropod abundance during two years after application, with more predators and fewer herbivores in the compost treated plots. Populations of spotted tentiform leafminer (Phyllonorycter blancardella) and migrating woolly apple aphid (Eriosoma lanigerum) nymphs were reduced in the compost plots. This study showed that the use of compost in an orchard ecosystem is beneficial to management of weed, fungal, and insect pests. The use of compost as a mulch in orchard ecosystems should be encouraged as a sustainable management practice because of a potential to reduce pesticide use.
Book Description
If one could ask Milton Erickson anything one wishes about how to change people, the result would be these conversations. The lively discussions are about the basic issues in the clinical field and are essential to the education of any therapist today. These conversations took place over a period of 17 years and were recorded as part of Gregory Bateson's project on communication and therapy. Bateson is involved in these conversations, which were primarily conducted by Jay Haley and John Weakland who were specializing in the study of Erickson's way of changing human beings. There are three volumes in this series. This volume presents the wide variety of therapy techniques Erickson innovated for dealing with individuals and covers the whole range of psychological problems.
Customer Reviews:
A classic in family therapy.......2001-04-27
This series of conversations sets the stage for stratigic family therapy. Erickson is in classic form here, the wit, the insight, and the process of change are all laid out quite well here. What these series do it lay out the way Erickson worked, and the guiding principles that he used in therapy. These books were out of print for years, and it is great to see them back!!

typical Mexican accent that is accurate.......2006-11-04
I purchased the booklets and the cassette tape at my campus bookstore. When I started playing the cassette, I was so glad that it was a sharp, accurate Mexican accent - not one of those boring too formal, monotone "neutral accent" that they teach you in High School classes. I've been trying to figure out who this lady was, I even tried calling the company but no success :( Does anyone know?
The books that accompany the tape are excellent........1999-02-23
I just received this in the mail and I love it. The books that accompany the tape are exactly what nurses and doctors can keep in their lab coats. Our charge nurse is going to order one for our desk.
Customer Reviews:
love it!.......2007-07-13
as a travel nurse i've found this as a great resource for the basics of communicating to spanish speaking people in the ER. Fits great in my pocket!
Great for quick reference!.......2006-11-10
The booklet was smaller than I expected but it covered all of the translations I was looking for.
Useful? You bet........2006-09-20
I've had this little booklet for a few years now and it is used almost every day in the Emergency Department where I work. Having had several years of Spanish in high school and college, I have to admit that this is by no means a complete resource. It is, however, highly portable (tucks into a pocket nicely), well organized, easy to use, and covers the vocabulary well enough to perform a basic assessment. My colleagues continually borrow it and all have found it useful. It's cheap and it works.
Speedy Spanish for Nursing Personnel.......2005-11-20
As hospitals become more culturally diverse it becomes more difficult for nursing personnel to communicate instructions and information to non-English speaking patients and their families. Speedy Spanish for Nursing Personnel is an exceptional find.
I initially purchased them for members of my staff on one unit in an 800 bed hospital. At first the administrators were concerned with what we would do if the patients answered our non-Spanish speaking caregivers in Spanish. But that problem has never come up, since we've had the book. Almost everything in it is a statement or a question to be answered yes or no.
The words and phrases are so simple and are spelled out phonetically for easy pronunciation. They relate directly to what we need to communicate: "Turn over, cough, I need to take you blood pressure. I need a urine specimen. Please remove your clothes and put on this gown. We are taking you to xray. I'm going to change your dressing."
We carry the books in our uniform pockets for quick reference, and can even open it and read from it directly to the patient if we need to. The tabs provide quick access to the right phrases. And it stays neat and tidy, with its laminate finish and plastic pocket pouch. The feedback from this little pocket sized book has been phenomenal. Some say it is the most useful gift I've ever given them. It didn't take long for the hospital to make Speedy Spanish available to our entire hospital staff.
Very Helpful!.......2005-10-08
This little booklet is a handy pocket sized reference which will give you the words you need to communicate with Spanish speaking patients. I was very impressed with all the information it contains.
Customer Reviews:
Both the Medical and Nursing books are worth the price.......2006-12-03
I recently re-entered the medical field after several years in another career. I like Spanish a lot and in just a week of working have already come across several Spanish-speaking only patients. I keep both guides with me in my hip pack and it's really helped get me back into the swing of things. It won't teach you perfectly but it will help you to get your point across.
Helpful .......2006-11-01
I have found this booklet helpful in my practice. The phrases are well arranged by category. Big bonus - the words/phrases are spelled (with bold accents) e-x-a-c-t-ly how they are pronounced! Would have given all 'stars' if l & d included some recovery/postpartum teaching.
Great little reference.......2005-10-08
This book may be small, but it is FULL of information. Plus, it is the perfect size to carry in your pocket when you need to have it on hand. I recommend this book highly for anyone in the medical profession who needs some Spanish, but doesn't have time for classes.
Total waste of money!.......2005-08-13
This is a cheaply constructed pamphlet - it is NOT a paperback. I paid $4.95 for this, instead I should have written some common phrases and questions on an index card. I intend to return this to Amazon, even paying postage, to make this point.
a must for medical professionals.......2005-08-12
Clear and concise for travel or office use. Easy to use and the perfect size.

Make no mistake about it, if you want to learn the Spanish quickly this is one of the best books to start with. Forget the verbs, adjectives, nouns and pronouns. Start conversational Spanish now. I teach "Command Spanish" and this is a great compliment for Police Education.
Absolutely Necessary!.......1999-11-04
This little flip book goes with me everywhere. I frequently come n contact with hispanic individuals and this book allows me to interact competently and doesn't allow the subject they "No Comprende" response. It does take some work pronouncing correctly but the english phrase and the spanish coutnerpart are listed as witha pronunciation line which speaking the phrase easy even for the language inept ones out there. And for the price, Why not?
Book Description
There are a thousand colourful Roger Neilson stories – and players, owners, coaches, and his many friends share the best in Wayne Scanlan’s Roger’s World.
Roger Neilson was a hockey nomad, even by professional coaching standards. The Hall of Famer coached 1,000 NHL games and was head coach of seven teams, but his strongest links were to the Toronto Maple Leafs, Vancouver Canucks, New York Rangers, Florida Panthers, Philadelphia Flyers, and, most recently, the Ottawa Senators. His hockey story was one of heartbreak. He came so close to a Stanley Cup and yet remained so far. He took the Canucks into the Cup finals, and his Panthers and Rangers both reached the finals shortly after he left. New York won the Cup the season after he was fired.
He was a working man's coach and one of the few in the game to favour third- and fourth-line grinders. He could relate to their work ethic. Yet he also influenced such stars as Darryl Sittler, Eric Lindros, Borje Salming, Lanny McDonald, Mike Gartner, Tiger Williams, and Bob Gainey.
Neilson was a bundle of contradictions. Nicknamed Captain Video for his many cutting-edge technological innovations, he routinely got lost in parking lots and arenas and once tried to change a TV channel with his calculator. Hehad a deep love of hockey, but he seemed to undo it at each turn, exploiting loopholes in the rules at every opportunity. He might have angered hockey people if they weren’t too busy laughing at his antics and marvelling at his boundless energy. On the job, he was maniacally driven, obsessed with order, detail, analysis, and a defensive mindset that is the flavour – some say the scourge – of today’s NHL.
Away from the rink, Neilson was a barefoot free spirit. He lived what one of his assistant coaches called a “Pollyanna” existence. Like the Dylan lyric, he stayed forever young – a bizarre, fascinating man of enormous vitality and a deep religious faith. A man who endeared himself to thousands inside the game of hockey and as many outside of it, he was, in the words of the New York Times, “the NHL’s favourite bachelor uncle.”
Customer Reviews:
A true Hockey story.......2006-01-17
An extremly important story about one of sports most dedicated people. Roger Neilson devoted his life to many and Wayne Scanlan does his legacy justice by devoting himself to Roger. The facts are amazing and this story will fill in any blaks you may have of Roger's life.
Interesting, informative, and funny...a cover-to-cover gem!.......2004-12-30
I accidentally came across a copy of 'Roger's World' in a bookstore in downtown Philadelphia. After reading it front to back in one sitting, it amazes me that there wasn't any publicity (at least in cities where Roger coached) surrounding the release of this book. Wayne Scanlan has managed to do the impossible; he's managed to fit the very fulfilling life of Roger Neilson into just about 200 pages. Don't let the length of the book fool you, however. Scanlan managed to not only unearth a slew of interesting facts and hilarious stories about Roger's coaching stints in baseball and hockey, but he also gives a very rare glimpse into the personal side of a man who touched so many lives outside of the realm of pro sports. Fans of all sports should embrace this biography, but hockey fans -- and especially anyone who ever had the good fortune to witness Roger behind a bench -- should consider it a 'must read'. The chapter about Roger's quirks and mishaps will have you roaring with laughter, and the seemingly endless stories about his grace and kindness as a human being will surely cause even the toughest 'checkers' to shed a tear or two.
