Book Description
To Make A Spotless Orange is the story of science with a mission: the use of organisms to attack pests. Few states showed very little interest after the first commercial pesticides appeared in the late nineteenth century. In california alone, entomologists persevered in developing both the theory and practice of biological control. These entomologists were neither environmentalists nor health crusaders, but scientist s who believed that their method would be the cheapest and most effective in the long run.

Product Description
Originally written for the Italian Enciclopedia del Novocento, this indispensable book is a concise, instructive introduction to polytheism, Greek mythology, the soul-spirit distinction, animal images, psychopathology, imagination, and the writings of C.G. Jung, Henry Corbin, and Adolf Portmann in the formulation of the field of Archetypal Psychology. This long-awaited amended third edition includes a complete checklist of Hillman's writings and a comprehensive bibliography of publications in the field.
Customer Reviews:
Champion of Soul and Descent........2001-12-10
Having read a variety of Hillman's books and articles and also some by Thomas Moore and David Miller, this book is a good summation of Archetypal Psychology's major thrusts. Any longer would perhaps be too technical. A large reference list of articles and books is particularly helpful. It is less theoretically oriented and more practically oriented than Jungian psychology, and, from Hillmans lucid writing, easier to understand.
"As Freud's paradigm of psychopathology was hysteria (and paranoia) and Jung's was schizophrenia, archetypal psychology has so far spoken mainly about depression" p 41. Anyone who has experienced their own underworld will relate to archetypal psychology. It validates and gives voice to those personal and cultural experiences of descent that are marginalised and suppressed in a western culture that priveleges optimism, objective science, consumerism and protestantism.
not one of his best.......2000-05-18
I'm not sure archetypal psychology can be summed up in a book like this, nor do I agree with Hillman's reduction of archetype to "image" even granting that by "image" he means something far broader than a mental picture. If you're taking a psych class and need some good test answers, this may be a book to buy. His other books are better.
"Superficial Psychology".......1999-06-13
"Superficial Psychology" would be a suitable term denoting Hillman's theory. The American psychologist James Hillman has in his writings removed the Jungian concept of the archetype as objective inherited pattern and replaced this with the archetypal image as existent within the natural world. Allegedly, what decides whether an image is archetypal or not is the subjects level of appreciation of the image. So if the subject "capitalizes" the image, i.e., decides that he appreciates the image, then it should be regarded archetypal. Hillman's theory belongs to the bizarre category of phenomenological Neoplatonism which means that only what we see should be regarded real, i.e., only what is apparent to consciousness is existent. Hillman says:"the soul is constituted of images, [and] that the soul is primarily an imagining activity...." (Hillman. Archetypal Psychology: A Brief Account, 6). These notions are extremely reductive and occasions a primitive psychology and moral. Don't buy it. Buy books by Franz, Neumann or Jung instead.

great for newbies, salty dogs and historians alike.......2007-02-13
My title says it all. If you're looking to start a new hobby, get better at your current one, or want some leisurely California history reading, this book can't be beat. I can't wait to hit the piers...

Lots of info and history, easy to read and use
The best source for Pier Fishing In California.......2004-08-19
The new edition is larger, but is chalked full of usefull info for any angler. It has great rigging techniques, and a huge amount of info on all of California's piers. Ken Jones knows his stuff, and the book shows it. I own both editions and they are perminant items on my coffee table at home. I'd highly reccomend this book to anyone interested in fishing...these books have it all!
Filled with facts and tips for novice and experts.......2004-08-18
Public Piers are great places for families and visitors to fish because they are the only places in California where anglers over 16 don't need a license. I've been fishing for 26 years now and build my own rods. I've traveled a lot and fished internationall and this book is unique in the focus it brings to fishing in my home state of California. Much thicker than the first edition and filled with tips and facts that have made my trips more productive. I have other books, like Tom Steinstra's well thumbed guide to California fishing spots, but, those are just a general guide without much depth. Ken Jones gives a detailed review of all the Public Piers in CA. I'd recommend it as required reading for those who are truly interested in catching fish off any California Pier. I've used the book and and found it invaluable as a deskside reference in looking up and planning fishing trips and answering questions authoratively on Ken's Pierfishing.COM website.

Book Description
Strong Medicine for Step 3 is a concise topical review of the specific problems and diseases covered by the USMLE Step 3 exam. The text focuses on the diagnosis and current standard of care in management of these key problems. The author strips away all but the essential facts, omits extraneous information, and emphasizes high-yield information. Strong Medicine for Step 3 is the most effective antidote to wasting valuable study time!
Customer Reviews:
STRONG NO NO FOR STEP-3.......2007-05-17
When I was reading this book the only thing I was thinking is, how did this guy release this book in US. I wasted my money please do not buy this book.
Misinformation -- caution!.......2007-04-27
I began studying this book with the Infectious Disease chapter. I ran into some typos but thought "so what" and ploughed on... but soon realized that the author was mixing up several of the bug names (like Cryptosporidium for Cryptococcosis, Herpes Simplex Virus for Human Herpes Virus, and Human Papillomavirus B-19 for Parvovirus B-19). I decided to stop reading and find a better book, if he's having trouble with bug names, he might be mixing up drug names too!
Maybe it could be a good book for a final stage review, to help you run through everything in an organized way, but only AFTER you've mastered the material and can pick out any errors yourself (I guess that makes it useless as a review book, huh!).
The problem might just be in this chapter, I don't know but, bottom line... I wouldn't risk my Step 3 score or my patients. Nor waste my time double checking the info for correctness.
not so strong medicine.......2007-01-12
after reading this book, i feel as though i'm still not ready to take step 3. i think first aid did a better job presenting the cases as well as giving more comprehensive and easy to remember management protocols.
PLEASE READ!!!.......2006-06-18
this book is awesome as an ultra quick review for STEP 3 for internal medicine residents. however, for someone like me (Psych resident) who forgot most of the rest of medicine, i felt that the information was just too concise without adequate enough of an explanation. i recommend going with the Kaplan review books.
Fails in comparison to Crush Step 3.......2006-06-01
I'm being really nice by giving this book 3 stars!
I haven't finished reading this book and I already found a handful of errors! You would think the author would take extra care in confirming what he wrote as "facts." For example, in page 122, the cause for Fifth disease was stated as "papillomavirus B19" when it should be "parvovirus B19." This is too glaring to pass off as "typo error." In page 126, Whiff test, used for diagnosing bacterial vaginosis, was stated as diagnostic for Trichomoniasis. In page 69, the author claims that meperidine causes constriction of the Sphincter of Oddi, not morphine, but Goodmann and Gilman plus a bunch of other recent papers that I checked clearly stated that morphine is associated with the biggest increase in biliary pressure secondary to spasms of the Sphincter of Oddi.
Nobody will have time to check "facts" while reviewing, especially for Step 3. I want a book I can trust and the errors I found on this one really corroded my confidence on this book. I'm reading it just so I don't feel bad for buying it. I suggest getting Crush and Swanson's Family practice review instead.

“THE PEOPLE COULD FLY,” the title story in Virginia Hamilton’s prize-winning American Black folktale collection, is a fantasy tale of the slaves who possessed the ancient magic words that enabled them to literally fly away to freedom. And it is a moving tale of those who did not have the opportunity to “fly” away, who remained slaves with only their imaginations to set them free as they told and retold this tale.
Leo and Diane Dillon have created powerful new illustrations in full color for every page of this picture book presentation of Virginia Hamilton’s most beloved tale. The author’s original historical note as well as her previously unpublished notes are included.

The People Could Fly.......2007-09-11
I bought this book about 20 years ago - It was a favorite of my then young children. TO this day, my daughter, son and I remember the great stories and pictures. They are now 24 and 26 years old. I have given this book for a gift as well. You can't beat this one!
Powerful Reading, A Classic that should be in every US home & Classroom.......2006-03-09
Beautifully illustrated and written. The colors only enhance the beauty of the original black and white drawings. This book will spark interest in African American history, especially that of the Gullah people.
"The People Could Fly" has it's roots in Angollah and the "Gullah" people. Tradition among the US slaves said that the "powers" of the Gullah people were very strong. How do I know this? I learned it from the comments at the end of the book.
After I read this, I remembered that Jonathan Green grew up in the Gullah culture. I LOVE his artwork, so I thought I'd do some research and find out if my memory was correct.
I found out that not only was he Gullah, but that from his birth, Jonathan Green was considered a special child because he was born with a caul which indicates "that the child is touched by uncommonness and magic that will bring inordinate grace to the community". As a result Jonathan was "deferred to and taught many things about his people, their traditions and their beliefs."
All this I learned because I read, "The People Could Fly". Buy this book for your children. And also buy the collection of stories by Hamilton entitled "The People Could Fly". The illustrations in the collection of stories are black and white and every bit as beautiful.
A masterpiece!.......2005-07-29
The story, prose, and illustrations of this book are beautiful and timeless.
We checked this book out from the library and it became an immediate favorite--we didn't want to give it back! I'm buying my own copy for our collection.
Only their imaginations to set them free.......2005-01-30
The death of author Virginia Hamilton in 2002 was a blow to the world of children's literature, no question. Hamilton was an extraordinary writer, creating complex fantastical books for children that seamlessly integrated contemporary interesting situations with aspects of African-American culture. Heck, one of the first ways I learned about the Underground Railroad was through her "House of Dies Drear". I hadn't read her collection of black folktales entitled "The People Could Fly" though I intended to. I was a little confused, therefore, when a brand spanking new "The People Could Fly" was published in 2004. I soon learned, though, that the book had taken one of the stories from the original collection, in a beautiful retelling of the amazing title story. This is a book that is beautiful to look at and a joy to read and reread.
For you see, they say the people could fly. Long ago in Africa there lived people who had beautiful bright black wings and who could soar in the sky. When they were captured by white slavers, the people shed their wings in the tight confines of the slave ships and forgot how to soar. They were sent to work in the field under the whips of the "masters" and overseers. One day, a woman and her babe were suffering too much to go on much longer. With the ancient words of the old man Toby, the woman and the babe remember how to fly and soared away from the farm. The story recounts how the people who knew how to fly learned to do so again with the help of old Toby and how the slaves who did not know how to fly watched them escape and retold the story to their children just as this book tells it to you.
It's a lovely story, all the lovelier due to the illustrations of Leo and Diane Dillon. The Dillons have illustrated the covers and books of Ms. Hamilton for years, so it is not surprising that they should do so again here. I've always been a huge fan of the Dillons, and this latest effort of theirs is as beautiful as anyone could hope. Even its endpapers are gorgeous, all matt black with shimmery feathers floating down the pages. What "The People Could Fly" does best is introduce children to the concept of slavery within the context of a folktale. Through this story kids understand the horrors of enslavement, rejoice in the escape of some, and understand that most slaves remained trapped and unable to fly. What really set this book apart for me, though, was the use of Editor and Author's Notes. Some great picture books (such as "Ellington Was Not a Street") are beautiful and interesting but never set their story within any context and leave you feeling very confused. "The People Could Fly", on the other hand, tells you everything you need to know about Hamilton, the origins of this tale, the various interpretations of flight (and how you can find a similar idea in Toni Morrison's excellent "Song of Solomon"), and the degradation of slavery.
All intelligent dialogue aside, this book is just a great read to kids. It'll capture their attention with the beautiful pictures, and the words will give them the additional thrill of wondering what it would be like to fly with wings. It's written with slightly older children in mind. Those kids who still like picture books but may want something a little more sophisticated than your average "Horton Hears a Who". With all the folktales out there, it's sometimes difficult to find African-American tales that aren't ALL based on Brer Rabbit. Fortunately, we now have this story to read to all the children we can find. This is a gorgeous addition to any collection and should be adored for as long as it exists.

Book Description
LEO AND DIANE DILLON'S award-winning picture book interpretation of Newbery Medalist Virginia Hamilton's beloved tale now includes an unforgettable word-for-word CD narration by James Earl Jones and Virginia Hamilton. This tale of slaves who could fly to freedom offered hope in the darkly brutal times of slavery. "That is what Virginia Hamilton set out to show, what the Dillons have so astutely expounded on and what ultimately makes this version of 'People' so powerful. Think of it as a triad of words, pictures, and storytelling." - New York Times Book Review

Chapter 7 is simply delicious! Together we take a step-by-step guided tour through a case study conducted at Rivers Effortless Dining, an upscale, progressive restaurant, using the process of creating and delivering a Totally Awesome Customer Experience and Customer Experience Mapping. Why a restaurant, you ask? Because all of us are dining experience experts. Almost everyone knows what a delightful dining experience should be so let's see if Brent and his crew were up to the task.
Chapter 8 is incredibly unique. We demonstrate the power of creating and delivering Totally Awesome Customer Experiences and Customer Experience Mapping in planning a web site: not just any web site, but our own new web site. You'll enjoy reading the comments from the planners and designers.
Chapter 9 covers an issue that's growing geometrically in importance: a customer's privacy. We discuss the ethical issues of gathering customer knowledge for use in creating and delivering Totally Awesome Customer Experiences while exploring how the concepts like CRM (Customer Relationship Management), data mining (customer knowledge), and customer privacy all interact in this highly explosive arena. You'll learn about a new path we think leads all of us out of the customer privacy woods. This new path offers a new perspective for the use and implementation of customer knowledge to help you increase customer trust, delight, and privacy.
Chapter 10 has you ready to make the leap off the Olympic ski jump. It's time for you to take off and perform your own perfect landing. This chapter deals briefly with setting the right expectations for both your customers and your employees. We then discuss how to create, assess, and measure experience performance standards that really work, along with some helpful tips.

Understanding the customer.......2002-08-29
I heard of the book from a friend that had read it and used it in his business. It opened my eyes to a whole new way of analyzing my customers. I have begun breaking down and analyzing the experiences my customers are having with me and I have see results. It provided me with a template to use as I try to turn interested people into buyers and buyers into repeat buyers. I would highly recommend this book.

Nothing is more important to growing a company than turning customers into outspoken fans. This book is a great study into that kind of corporate motivation and the resulting top line growth.
If you are a marketer, you have to understand Millet's point of view because of the ROI his strategy rewards. As a CEO, it is the kind of mantra that breeds total organizational success.
Tools for developing a Customer-Focused organization.......2002-03-06
This book introduces a new language (you really have to pay attention!) and tools for creating a customer-focused rather than customer-manipulative culture that, in turn, will transform our merely satisfied members into trusting, vocal, loyal members. It focuses on how we can create an emotional trust bond with our members by ensuring that their "experiences" with our organization are consistently "delightful" and that our staff is establishing human connections with our members.
The authors emphasize that although customers connect with and remember the experiences they've had with a particular business, most organizations focus on operational and transactional efficiency as a means of developing customer relationships and loyalty. A new method of ensuring we consistently deliver delightful experiences is through the use of Customer Experience Mapping©. This process involves identifying the most common member experiences, such as
establishing a new account or applying for a loan, and then determining the member response we want at each stage of the process. (What do we want them to think about us? How do we want them to feel?) In addition, we want to ensure that we do not trigger situations where the member may "opt out" of
the credit union due to a negative emotional response to our behavior or operations. Next, we "map out" a step-by-step method for creating Totally Awesome Member Experiences and maximizing Member delight. This map creates the framework for staff training, improves consistency and ensures
repeatability of our member experiences. Rather than doing a mass roll out, they recommend initiating a "pilot" project, to see how it works for our organization.
One of the most fascinating and impactful portions of the book is the case study on Rivers Effortless Dining, in Salt Lake City, a highly successful restaurant who worked with the authors to apply the principles of the book. It walks us through the entire process of how the owner prepared for, and implemented, this philosophy. Another case study outlines how to develop a Totally Awesome Website.
In a nutshell, this book also provides:
* A measurable method to implement and apply Customer Experience Mapping©.
* Insight into empowering and rewarding staff to delight members.
* The importance of developing Customer Trust Currency© , the foundation of relationship building.
* Ways to build an Emotional Trust Bond with our members.
* How to detect whether we are being Customer-Manipulative or Customer-Focused and how to change it.
* How to turn Customer Knowledge Currency© (data mining, etc.) into Customer Trust Currency© . (There's an interesting discussion here on customer privacy and the importance of timing in determining WHEN to act on knowledge. For instance, if we offer products and services TOO soon, before they trust us, it can backfire and create a negative member response.)
We've ordered a couple of extra books for the Learning Library.
I Believe!!!.......2002-03-06
Loved IT!!! I felt the content and message are right on target for the needs of todays business. I especially liked the variety of examples that help to visualize this model working for ANY organization. I read it and encouraged my Director to read it, she read it, and she in turn is encouraging our entire management team to read it. This book speaks to exactly where we see our organization going. We can hardly wait to put these methods into practice.

Book Description
Structural policies, networked information technologies, and flexible and skilled human resources transform old social and economic activities into new ones, which together increase economic growth in today's "new economy." In this study Catherine L. Mann and Daniel H. Rosen examine how this new phenomenon is affecting the economies of the member nations of the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and whether APEC policymakers should have an action agenda toward it. The authors use macroeconomic models and distill case studies from selected APEC countries to illustrate both the potential rewards and the challenges faced by policymakers and businesses in enabling and embracing the dynamism of the new economy. The study also highlights the impact of new economy forces on trade competitiveness as well as the relationship between government and civil society.
The authors conclude with a set of policy recommendations for APEC members, and for APEC itself to ensure that the benefits of the New Economy are widely shared in the region. The study was initially prepared for the Economic Committee of APEC for presentation to its annual ministerial and summit meetings in Shanghai in October 2001.

Empty, Unorganized, and Stale.......2002-08-18
This book suffers from lack of organization, content, and insight, seemingly copied from a Microsoft Website lesson, assumes far too much without authority and delivers too little. We tried contacting the author, Ian McLean, but his email address bounced. Then we found his website does not answer and even the name server email address bounced. Perhaps he received too many negative emails.
As an example, the use of Active Directory best requires a DC installation. But the author fails to mention this which can be disastrous and lead the inexperienced reader on an endless quest. This sort of problem is rampant throughout. He writes in a rambling dialog guised as decent reference to the layperson but usually without a reference point. Even experienced Network Administrators would have problems following his chaotic, amateurish chapters.
There are far too many omissions in the book, far too many inaccuracies. But the main problem is trying to follow what he's written in some kind of decent order. This is not a reference, but a mess. I was quite surprised at how badly written it actually is.

A very comprehensive overview of Windows 2K security.......2000-06-16

Excellent Win 2K security overview.......2000-06-16
This book is a must-have for system administrators and security professionals.
A book for all Seasons.......2000-04-22
Well to start, I really like this book, PERIOD. I am a MCSE, MCT. We are using NT 4, and most likely be evaluating Windows 2000. I have already used w2k for months, home lab, will be teaching w2k, implementing w2k. I need quick, precise info on w2k security. I am taking the w2k security design beta/real exam as well. I am also taking the w2k betas (including the w2k Security Design 70-220 in about 2 hrs). I also plan to teach the MOC for w2k Security as well as become "expert" on security issues as well as implementation in w2k.
Its best if you have w2k adv server set up, parent/child domain but while waiting this book will get you up to speed in a hurry. At work we are using buzz words like public key, VPN, Radius server as well as doing this. Also smart cards and certificate services which I wish I read his book before I took the betas but I will be ready when the real exams come out. With this book I get to read about w2k security and there are quick little exercises to demo the w2k security features. Oh yes the price of the book is quite reasonable. So get the book, become an expert on w2k security. The review is a bit rambling but in 70 min or so I am taking the w2k Security Design beta, a "neat" way to spend 3-4 hrs on a Saturday morning.
