Customer Reviews:
Very Helpful.......2007-01-11
This book is very helpful in case that your aim is to construct a basement for unit root and cointegration study. The language of the book is clear and easy to follow. Besides the introduction and explanation of different methods, it compares different methods by using recent empirical studies.
Very good high level introduction book.......2005-12-18
This book gives very good high level semi-technical review and introduction on the many different techniques in the areas of unit root and cointegration. This is a good starting point if you want to get into this new area. It also lists quite complete references based on which you can start your development and research work.
modern econometrics with latest developments.......2001-07-03
This is a book on specialized topics in econometric modeling. Like Franses recent book it deals with ARIMA models with unit roots and advances in the theory of cointegration. This book is somewhat advanced but is perfect for the right audience, the statisticians and econometricians that deal with time series modeling (univariate and multivariate ) and structural equation modeling.
The asymptotic theory is well covered but the unique feature of the book is that it points out that the asymptotics can give very poor approximations in small to moderate sample sizes. The authors provide alternatives including the use of the bootstrap for standard error estimates, confidence bounds and hypothesis testing (particularly tests for unit roots).
It is clear and covers the important literature. Much like Franses book it covers bootstrap and Bayesian methods and really does provide a current and useful approach to important problems and methodology in econometrics.
It could be used for a special topics graduate course or as a supplement to a graduate course in econometrics.
Excellent Book.......2000-08-19
Excellent book
This one of the best book about cointegration.
Intuition behind modern time series analysis.......2000-04-24
This book is extremely well written. It gives a good intuition behind unit roots and cointegration. It tells us to be critical when it comes to unit roots and cointegration; they are not very powerful in a statistical sense. The authors warn of using such techniques blindly. This book is a good start for an intuitive feel after a tough Time Series course where one is all entangled in sophisticated statistical techniques. It is also a good book for the professional economist not very knowlegeable in time series econometrics. I personally learned a lot from that book and it increased my critical capacity when it comes to econometrics.

Book Description
This volume is devoted to the derivation and application of simplified bioclimatic boundary conditions at vegetated land surfaces using natural selection of vegetation characteristics driven by productivity maximization. It investigates the internal control of forest growth by the vertical fluxes of light, CO2, water vapor, and heat within the canopy, as well as the external control offered by the balances of thermal energy and water. Through these means it seeks to determine how the physical characteristics and productivity of forest communities are related to the climates and soils in which they are found. Ecohydrology bridges the fields of hydrology and ecology and proposes new unifying principles derived from the concept of natural selection. It also has potential application in determining the response of vegetation to slow variations in climate and will provide fascinating reading for graduate-level students and research scientists working in ecohydrology, hydroclimatology, forest ecology, and surface water hydrology.

Customer Reviews:
Renting-to-own.......2006-10-31
After checking this book out of my university's library multiple times, I realize it's time to buy it. It is a great resource. Everyone should read at least a couple chapters before designing a survey, and especially before using the results of survey to draw any conclusions. I wish I could send a copy of this book to everyone who writes those poll questions for Time and Newsweek. Along those lines, reading this book will make you a much more informed survey respondent and magazine reader, as well.
How do people answer our questions ?.......2000-04-04
The cognitive psychology behind questionnaire and interview development. One of the best reviews of the theory of asking questions. Represents years of expertise. Very recommended.
The notion of looking inside the question answering process is very important for folks writing and administering questionnaire surveys. This text doesn't so much tell you how to do surveys and interviews, as it gets you thinking about how you are interacting with your respondents.
For example, Sudman, et al. will get you thinking about surveys and interviews as a conversation - the norms and expectations that respondents will have of you and how they will interpret your questioning. Similarly, you will read about the four stage process that respondents go through in interpreting your questions, bringing up from memory the information they need to answer your questions, how they 'calculate' their answers, and then how they translate their ideas into an answer format.
I would also recommend Tourangeau, et al. "The Pyschology of Survey Response".

Product Description
Recumbent bikes are showing up everywhere. The problem is that hardly anyone knows anything about them. And the major bike media won't cover them (even though they're the fastest-growing bike type). Solution? This book! It's the only book that's all about recumbent bicycles. It covers everything: history, science, sports, touring, city-use, innovations, design and home-building. It's written both for beginners and for experts. It is unbiased as regards makes and models of bikes. Instead, it explains the effects of all the various features found on recumbents, offering pro's and con's while leaving it to the reader to consider their own needs. Recumbents are the most varied bikes on earth in terms of intended design goals, so radically different models can still be great bikes depending on a rider's needs. All types get plenty of respect in this book! With this info and insight, plus plenty of test-riding, anyone can find the right bike for them! ...Or just learn what's really going on with these bikes, for the first time. The first two editions sold thousands, with rave reviews. This fully-revised 3rd edition has a great new feature: it is printed on matte coated paper for wonderful photo quality. It also offers hundreds of B&W and color photos (many new for this edition), updated manufacturer and resource listings, and current news.
Customer Reviews:
Well written, interesting book........2007-01-10
I recently purchased a recumbent bike, and was interested in learning more about them. There are not many books about recumbents, but this book was just what I was looking for. It gives the history of the bikes, some of the design issues, and a review of the industry. Many people trying to set bicycle speed records are using recumbents, and the book covers a lot of these topics in depth. Worthwhile reading.
Recumbant Bikes.......2007-01-10
I ordered this book for my husband and he enjoyed it very much. He keeps it out for reference and there are many irems he can refer to. Very good, informative book. Very rapid shipping .
A good introduction.......2006-09-01
The land speed record for a recumbent bicycle under special conditions is 136 mph! Most speed records are more in the area of 65 mph. "Benders" can ride many miles in a day and claim not to feel tired. Those things alone should make any cyclist want to know more about the pros and cons of recumbents. The best advice in the book is to rent different styles of recumbents for personal trial before buying or building.
Many design parameters are discussed for the person who wants to build his own "bent." No actual plans are given, but there are plenty of pictures of different designs others have used. A large number of additional sources are listed.
Much of the book deals with the advantages of a "bent" over a conventional bike. I wish the book had included actual plans for both a short wheel base model and a long wheel base model.
If you have any interest in a "bent," get this book and read it.
Excellent book for new recumbenteers.......2004-11-29
I bought Gunnar Fehlau's book, "The Recumbent Bicycle," while shopping for my first recumbent bike. There's a lot of recumbent bicycle information available on the web, but most of it is disjointed.
This book covers the topic of recumbent bicycles in an organized and cohesive way. It introduced me to the different types of recumbents and their merits. The chapter "Basics of Recumbent Design" was particular helpful in contrasting the advantages and disadvantages of short vs. long wheelbase geometries.
The history of recumbents provided interesting background information. The author has a sense of humor. The treatment is technical where required, but at a layman's level. The section on aerodynamics is the only one containing mathematics.
I read the book over the course of several weeks, both before and after buying my bike. The index is comprehensive and that made it easy to lookup various topics when I wanted to refer back to specific points.
The photos and illustrations are good and clear.
If you want to compare specific brands and models, subscribe to the various recumbent bicycle email lists. Read specific product reviews and owner comments at the recumbent and other bicycle web sites. Models change each year so a book detailing specific models would become out of date quickly.
I highly recommend "The Recumbent Bicycle." This is the only book I could find devoted to recumbents, and luckily it's a good one.
Awful!!.......2004-08-20
MINUS 5 stars-save your money
Vague. Covers mostly recumbent racing of decades gone by (who cares)-coverage of so called "modern" recumbents is little. Most brands covered have gone by the wayside.
So called "Homebuilder's" section elaborates on the obvious with a few small dark pics. Very few pics in the book and the ones in there are small, dark and black & white. The color pics in the center of the book, of course, cover racing.

Kana Cards are lightweight, durable flash cards that contain all the basic Kana characters in a fully portable package. On the front of each card is a beautifully drawn Kana character including stroke order description. On the back is the corresponding pronunciation.
Kana Cards are bound together by a small ring so cards can be added or removed as needed. They have a tough, plastic cover on the front and back so they can slip into your pocket or purse and go anywhere. Kana Cards help you learn Japanese more effectively by turning wasted moments into study time.
Customer Reviews:
Not bad.......2003-10-10
Pro's: Everything you need to memorize Katakana and Hiragana at a great price, especially compared to all the alternatives; keyring; bookmarks.
Con's: Paper construction is not conducive to carrying in bookbag or pocket; needs to be laminated, made of plastic, or to come with hard carrying case.
A great aid to begin learning a good slew of Japanese verbs.......2003-06-17
These Language Express Cards contain 105 different Japanese verbs on 105 numbered cards about 2" by 1.5". They have holes punched top and center and come on metal rings that can be opened to allow you to remove, shuffle or organize the cards as needed. On the front is a small cartoon image, and the English verb. On the rear is the Indicative, -masu, and -te forms of the verb with Kanji/katakana written underneath, and the card number (sometimes a negative form of the verb is thrown on as well).
Using these cards is convenient. Once learning these 105 verbs, you get the hang of basic Japanese verbs to allow you to approach conjugation and wider vocabulary studies in other books centered on broader rules of japanese verbs.
Very impressive set of cards!.......2002-09-24
On the surface, this seemed like a cheap little set of flash cards to help me learn Japanese. When I got the cards I was amazed! They are hole-punched and on 2 easily opened keyrings. The set also included 2 bookmark cards. The cards show both translation and the pen stroke. They are even numbered so that you can shuffel them yet retain the original order! They thought of everything... A+A+A+
I can't recommend these highly enough.......2001-07-19
if you are trying to study Japanese and you're not in Japan, you know that the odds are stacked against you - without hearing it constantly, and reading it everywhere, the learning process is much more arduous. Well, imagine having these little cards that you can carry ANYWHERE because they're so small and are conveniently bound together with a steel keyring! They even have durable plastic covers to keep the face and front cards from getting grungy. If you carry these cards around, glancing at them while waiting for a train, standing on line at the supermarket, or between commercials, I GUARANTEE you'll pick up three or four - at the bare minimum - vocabulary words every day. Let that sink in, then buy these cards while you can. Why couldn't the Tuttle kanji cards have been presented so neatly?
Learning Kana with Cards.......2000-08-08
My first reaction when I saw the package was, "Can they be that small?" Yes! They are small, and a full set of the 51 cards (each of the two alphabets contains 51 cards) fits nicely into my pocket without a huge bulge or weight. In just three days, I've gotten half the harikana memorized and expect that I will be done by the end of the week and ready to start on the next set. I love the convienience of having them always there, ready to use in those wasted minutes in lines and waiting rooms.
The characters on the cards are done in very nice calligraphy, which doesn't always match what you will find in printed material. The only negative comment is that the characters formed with the addition of dots or circles (I don't remember the official name!) are lumped five to a card. Simple and easy to use, the ring allows you to re-order the cards so that you don't memorize the actual sequences.
I would recommend them to anyone attempting to master these new alphabets.

Customer Reviews:
Great Deck.......2007-08-23
I had to take a katakana quiz the third day of class and I strongly beleive this is a must have because some of the katakana are hard to duplicate when you haven't been taught to write them correctly or when it takes you awhile to get it right. The small differences make it frustrating. With these cards you can be sure what your looking at is the right thing. They're also wonderful for people like me who have really bad handwriting.
Exelent Study help.......2006-03-21
These cards were a great resorce to me, it provides exelent help and prevents you from having to write the kana your self and studying the wrong thing. I would recomend these to anyone who wants to lean kana.

For history buffs and golf aficionados alike, First Off the Tee is a fantastic way to share the links with America's duffers-in-chief and to learn which of them were nearly good enough to turn pro, who was worst off the tee, and who couldn't help but cheat on the greens.
Don Van Natta Jr. is an investigative correspondent for The New York Times, where he has worked since 1995, having previously worked for eight years at The Miami Herald. He has been a member of three Pulitzer Prize-winning teams. He lives in London with his wife, Lizette Alvarez, also a Times correspondent, and their two daughters, Isabel and Sofia.

Funny presidential golf anecdotes.......2007-01-28
I bought this book for my father-in-law but I enjoyed reading it when I visited him. Good for any golfer that likes to read, or for someone who enjoys presidential history. Most of the anecdotes have no quoted source, so who knows if they've been embellished, but that doesn't spoil the book.
Great Gift For Golfer.......2004-03-09
I don't golf. Never did. Never will. I think golf is borrrring.... but, I bought this book for a guy who loves golfing. Absolutely loves it. He claims to be good at it. Well, he loved the book. He was laughing when he told me about how much he enjoyed it. I think he really appreciated getting the book, especially getting it from someone who doesn't know a thing about golf! I recommend this as a gift for anyone who golfs. Especially someone who would enjoy the history of the presidential golfers.
For Presidents, "only the golf course says no.".......2003-11-30
Author Van Natta, a New York Times correspondent and 100+ golfer, believes (like most golf-lovers everywhere) that you can learn everything you ever wanted to know about someone by watching him/her play golf. He takes it one step further, however, finding golf particularly revealing of a President's personality and values. "Nearly every person in a president's privileged life says yes...Only the golf course says no."
Accumulating fascinating anecdotes from his research into the golf games of the Presidents, and combining these with his own experience as a reporter, which includes more than two years spent covering President Clinton, he shows how a President's golf game reflects the inner man. Fourteen of the last seventeen Presidents were golfers to one degree or another, and no reader, whether a golfer or not, will be disappointed in the unique insights and revealing anecdotes the author gives us of Presidents at leisure. What makes this book different from so many others, is that Van Natta is a real writer, carefully choosing his quotations (including on-course remarks), narrating anecdotes so that they have real climaxes, and emphasizing details that are so telling that no reader will fail to see parallels between the man's golf and his Presidential administration.
Though JFK is adjudged the best player of the fourteen, with an "effortless swing," few citizens knew how addicted he was to the game, something he kept secret because, after Eisenhower's administration, golf was considered a political liability. (Ike left cleat marks in the floor leading from the Oval Office to the practice green outside his window.) Ike, JFK, FDR (who was a passionate golfer until he was stricken with polio at age 39), and Gerald Ford are considered the purists of the game, and none of them were ever caught lying about a score, using mulligans (extra shots off the tee), or tossing the ball out of the woods. Not surprisingly, Bill Clinton is considered among the White House's "most polished and prolific golf cheats." As one observer noted, "You don't have to subpoena Whitewater documents. Just watch him on the golf course." He elevated the mulligan to such a new level that it was referred to as a "billigan." Nixon, LBJ, and Warren G. Harding, were also considered cheats.
With a final section devoted to the Bushes, father and son, Van Natta closes his analysis of Presidential golf games with particular panache, since the Bushes so often play together. The book is pure delight, providing a unique take on Presidents, who, on the golf course, face the same challenges as the rest of us, with some of them responding more gracefully to the challenges than others. golf widow.......2003-08-01
I'm a classic golf widow who happened to pick this book up in the bookstore for my husband. He loved it. But, to my surprise, I loved it, too. I wound up learning a lot more about presidents, and what makes them tick, than I ever expected. It's a breezy, fun read, full of quirky surprises and amusing anecdotes. Rather than bore you with too much golf lingo, the book actually brings the game and the presidents to life without tumbling into cliches. I highly recommend it.
Fore!.......2003-07-15
Interesting angle. Using the sport and game
of golf as the foundation to add insights and discuss the Presidents who played it. Author Van Natta Jr. brought forth an original avenue to bring a topic that is commonly written about (presidents) to light. Golf, the ever-increasing mainstream sport to the American public, is no longer stereotyped (falsely) that it's an elitist sport to play. In "First Off The Tee," there are many interesting facts about the habits of some of the commanders-in-chiefs that hit the greens.
Bill Clinton took so many mulligan's the author called
them "Billigans." He scored himself in the low 80s, similar to his idol JFK, but he literally took over 200 swings. Clinton played loosely with the rules, at times bending them to conform to his ends. Can the phenomena of how a person plays golf be taken and applied to political and administrative behaviour? Psycho-social analysis? Perhaps a dissertation has started somewhere regarding this.
One President drank booze while golfing during prohibition. He also gambled on a every game.
John F. Kennedy was an avid golpher, and fairly decent one at that,
getting scores in the low 80s. But he did keep the fact that he
played the game secret from the public.
Gerald Ford played amateur tourneys and pinged the
bystanders in the crowd from time to time.
The author played with the likes of Clinton and George W.
Bush. G. W. Bush could play through 18 holes in an hour
and a half, while Clinton took six hours. (He liked
to talk a lot more.)
In the past, Presidents didnt' want to be
photographed on the greens. Today it's acceptable, and
perhaps even expected.
14 mini-biographies highlighting the lighter side of the Execs as men and the sport of golf. Very interesting.
