Book Description

Mounting hostility to the hegemony of the United States; tumbling stock markets; environmental destruction; sluggish economic growth, unprecedented income inequality, and growing poverty: something fundamental is wrong, argue Petras and Veltmayer. They assert that globalization is a mere euphemism for capitalism in its current global, imperialist projection. They show how resistance to capitalist globalization is being organized among very diverse social sectors, from rural peasants to the middle class in wealthy countries of the North. They conclude their analysis by assessing the possibilities for unifying the diverse forces of opposition to neoliberalism, capitalism and imperialism and the prospects for an alternative socialist form of development.

5 out of 5 stars The challenge to U.S. hegemony.......2004-05-15

"System in Crisis: The Dynamics of Free Market Capitalism" by James Petras and Henry Veltmeyer offers an intelligent and scathing critique of the capitalist state system and an extensive analysis of the myriad grassroots movements that oppose it. The authors posit that the Bush administration has resorted to imperialism as a means of reasserting U.S. control over the world economic system. But by detailing the social, economic and environmental problems that continue to challenge U.S. hegemony, Petras and Veltmeyer believe that U.S. imperialism may be unwittingly accelerating the collapse of capitalism and creating the conditions for a socialist alternative to emerge.

James Petras is a Professor at the State Univesity of New York and Henry Veltmeyer is a Professor at Sanit Mary's University. The collaboration works well in this book. It appears that Dr. Veltmeyer's presence may serve to take some of the sting out of Dr. Petras who is a well-known and prolific writer of sometimes blistering socio-political essays. However, the end result is a no less powerful and intriguing book that is at turns analytical, historical, passionate and persuasive.

The authors begin by challenging postmodern theories about the 'smooth space' of capitalism made popular in the book "Empire" by Michael Hardt and Antonio Negri by explaining how the war against terrorism has been used by President Bush to advanced U.S. interests in contested places around the world. But while the open-ended war against terror has been successful in transferring wealth to corporations and the wealthy and has served to intimidate many dissenters, the authors believe that the deficits associated with war combined with the ongoing decline in domestic manufacturing industries suggests that imperialism alone will not restore the U.S. to international preeminence.

We learn that the brand of neoliberalism championed by the U.S., Europe and Israel has caused political and economic instability in dozens of countries, especially in Central and South America. For example, one chapter in the book is dedicated to the massive worker and peasant mobilizations in Argentina that have sought to restore economic and social justice in the wake of that country's dramatic economic collapse. The authors go on to describe how the U.S. has returned to such Cold War shenanigans as military coups, economic blackmail, covert military actions and other tactics in order to repress similar popular uprisings in places such as Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venzuela. The authors contend that these efforts have pushed most world governments to the political Right even as economic deprivation pushes many of their citizens to the Left, thereby "setting the stage for a classic confrontation between dictatorial reaction and revolution".

Other chapters are dedicated to the collapse of the cod industry in the Northern Atlantic, the uprisings of indigenous peoples in Ecuador and Mexico, the struggles of Latin American peasants against the state, the anti-globalization movement, and more. The authors convincingly argue that the state's defense of capital is central to class struggle but that popular "direct and collective action" can empower the people to create better lives for themselves. On the other hand, the authors admit that part of the challenge for the Left is to unite these diverse movements in a way that provides a credible socialist challenge to capitalism.

Recent Socialist electoral victories in Spain and India appears to support the authors' thesis in what may prove to be a remarkably prescient work. Kudos to Zed Books for consistently publishing high-quality materials including this book, which I highly recommend to all.

Book Description

"Pandemonium is a dark, gothic place, full of dangers and enchantment for all who enter its labyrinth, a retro-vision that seeks to ensnare, disarm, and disturb all who enter whatever sense they make from the many opportunities that it provides." --Stewart R. Clegg, University of Western Sydney, Macarthur, Australia "Two volumes in one, Pandemonium is a disorganisationally challenging contribution to the postmodern theory of organizations which systematically questions the underlying assumptions and values of contemporary administrative science and organization theory. The MBA will never be the same again." --Bryan S. Turner, Deakin University In this irreverent, yet highly serious book, Gibson Burrell challenges the established frameworks that have defined our understanding of organization and organizations. With a vision that extends deep into the history of Western societies, an interdisciplinary sweep that encompasses the broad domain of social and cultural theory and critical vigor that exposes the staleness of tired ideas, Pandemonium disconcerts and reinvigorates the study of organizations. Moving the field of organization theory back into the center of contemporary critical thought, Gibson Burrell brings to bear different forms of analysis: notions of discourse and genealogy, or narrative and text. Disclaiming the voices of modern, positivist science and of authorial distance, the text itself presents a metaphor for the rejection of linearity and the reassertion of organizational creativity. This is not an organizational behavior textbook, but an exploration mining new ideas and insights that take organization theory into another era.

Pandemonium is a book about organizations and the threat of linearity. The book itself is non-linearily written, it reads very well, and inspires to rethinking of: organizations, science, writing, and life itself... Anyone who doubts organizing is interesting -- read this one!

    Book Description

Many agriculturalists, conservationists, and environmentalists are stressing the importance of sustaining soil productivity so that future generations will have adequate productive land on which to produce food. One significant factor affecting soil productivity is the retention of crop residues on the surface of the soil to help control soil erosion. This book provides a review of the vast amount of literature on the subject, condensing the findings in a comprehensive, easy-to-understand manner. It focuses on topics such as erosion control, crop production in systems involving surface residues, residue use for fuel and animal feed, plant pathogens, insects, soil properties, and the economics of conservation tillage.

        4 out of 5 stars A reasonable presentation.......2007-07-07

In "A Note to Teachers" at the back of this book we read "The purpose of this text is to

expose your students to the captivating and the controversial in the origins debate-to take

them beyond the pat scenarios offered in most basal texts and encourage them to grapple with

ideas in a scientific manner". Later we read "Throughout, the text evaluates how well

different views can accomodate anomalous data within their respective interpretative

frameworks". Finally, "[The book's] presentation of a non-Darwinian perspective, in addition

to the standard view, is intended to stimulate discussion and encourage students to evaluate

the explanatory power of different theories-which, after all, is what science is all about".

Using current biological data, Kenyon and Davis' book admirably fulfills these objectives.

For those concerned that the book tries to bootleg some sort of religion under a scientific

jacket, this also from the "Note": "Advocates of design have included not only Christians

and other religous theists, but pantheists, Greek and Enlightenment philosophers and now

include many modern scientists who describe themselves as religiously agnostic." The writers

stick to biological data and discuss intelligent design versus undirected evolution in light

of those data; they recognize that their subject begins and ends with empirical science, and

they do not venture into theological discussion. I am puzzled by the numerous hyperbolic and

polemic reviews of this book here on Amazon. I suggest that you give this book a chance

yourself, and make up your own mind. Other titles you might enjoy include "Evolution: A

Theory in Crisis" by Michael Denton; "Icons of Evolution" by Jonathan Wells; "The Creation

Hypothesis", ed. JP Moreland; "Darwin on Trial", by Philip Johnson; "Darwin's Black Box" by

Michael Behe; "What is Creation Science?" by Henry Morris and Gary Parker; "Uncommon

Dissent", ed. William Dembski; "Darwin's Enigma" by Luther Sunderland.

        1 out of 5 stars Baloney........2007-07-06

I used to teach biology, so I was interested in how these authors would argue their case against evolution. If this is all they've got, the Intelligent Design side is in pretty bad shape. I was expecting cogent arguments for their cause. Instead, their arguments were vague, unscientific, and outdated. I even laughed on page 125 when to refute the concept of homologous structures they stated, "for it is an ancient and valid principle of logic that one cannot assume, for argument's sake, the truth of a proposition as a means of proving it," when that is ALL ID and Creationism do.

        5 out of 5 stars required reading.......2007-05-11

The most prized Creationist writings are required reading for Evolutionists. Otherwise, we cannot refute all the latest falsehoods with which our Creationist brethren are being fed. Here are a few morsels from their latest hit--Of Pandas and People:

        < < < < < Stanley Miller's experiment >>>>>
The authors discuss an experiment which sought to simulate the conditions under which life began. There is a chapter on this topic in Icons of Evolution by Jonathan Wells, from which this discussion is lifted. Wells' chapter is adequately refuted on the talkorigins Website.

Incidentally, the book also borrows Wells' discussion on peppered moths.

        < < < < Cambrian explosion >>>>>
As usual, we hear the old refrain about the Cambrian explosion. Like many Creationist authors, the present authors underplay the pre-Cambrian fossils, overplay the Cambrian fossils, and exaggerate the rapidity with which it occurred.

Anyway, what if there WAS a Cambrian explosion? It would have to have happened millions of years ago, and I thought all life began only 6000 years ago!

        < < < < < giraffe evolution >>>>>
The authors contend that the giraffe would have to be created in its present state. Otherwise, the unequal body parts would not balance. This argument has been refuted in a dissertation which claims that the giraffe neck grew as a result of male combat. The accessibility to tree leaves only came as a by-product.

        < < < < transitional fossils >>>>>
No Creationist tract is complete without a request for more transitional fossils. The Tiktaalik-Acanthostega-Ichthyostega-Eryops progression is mentioned but not given a fair hearing.

Then there is the story that Steven Jay Gould coined the term "punctuated equilibrium" to apologize for not answering this request. It so happens, though, that Gould arrived at his theory after studying a branch in which the intermediate forms were also present.

The authors contend that there are no fossil forms indicating that the whale was at one time a land animal. Either they don't know about the Pakicetus inachus-Ambulocetus natans-Rodhocetus kasrani progression or they hope that you don't.

        < < < < DNA count >>>>>
Throughout the last chapter, the authors assume that Evolutionsits assume a progression which runs fish-amphibian-reptile-mammal. They cite statistics which show that these orders are approximately equally distant from unicellular species. What the authors don't know, or hope that you don't know, is that scientists have long ago abandoned such a progression, and now see the land animals as diverging from the first tetrapods.

Again we see that Creationists tend to remember Genesis 1:21, in which God creates all the living creatures "after their kind," but forget Exodus 20:16, which says, "Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor."

Despite all these falsehoods, I wish to say one word to those who fear for our nation's children: What are you worried about? The hawkers of this book are afraid to push it in the classroom, so they try the next best place, which is the school library. As I recall, our generous benefactors donated 60 copies to the school library in Dover, Pennsylvania. Yet the scientific terminology in this book is difficult for most adult readers, let alone high school students.

You think all 60 copies will get checked out at the same time? Not as long as Catcher in the Rye is available!

1 out of 5 stars Old creationist arguments in new garb.......2007-05-07

This is the creationist (excuse me, intelligent design) textbook that was so much at issue in the Kitzmiller v. Dover case. I noticed a copy in the library and figured I'd look through it. (If nothing else, I figured that it kept someone else from possibly getting corrupted by it.)

For someone like me who doesn't know much biology, the arguments come off as reasonably plausible. However, once I read critiques of the book, I realize just how misleading it is. For example, it gives the impression that the mammalian wolf and the (marsupial) Tasmanian wolf could easily be classified together. It's only obdurate Darwinists (that term occurs over and over again) who insist that they must be in completely separate categories due just to the different ways they reproduce. In fact, there are many differences between the two types of wolves, more than enough to justify their wide separation despite some superficial similarities. Similar arguments occur over and over again, all superficially plausible to the biologically ignorant but ludicrous if you know the truth.

The overall effect did not enamor me of creationists: they are still using the same old arguments the same old misleading way. They never seem to give up.

        1 out of 5 stars Unbelievable.......2007-03-08

This book is not even worth perusing for laughs. Why not embrace the mysteries of science as opportunities to expand our knowledge? Intelligent design is a hopelessly inadequate intellectual endeavor, and this book has no place in academia. Perhaps many decades from now, we'll judge this ideas like we have for the flat earth theory.

Andelman's "Stadium for Rent" gives a great look at the business of pro-sports and the dealings, pains and heartaches of trying to lure pro-sports to any city.

This book chonicles Tampa Bay's quest for Major League baseball as the title suggests, however ti gives the reader a taste of the want and desire of a sports team (in this case, Major League Baseball) over the coldness of observing a team move from one city to the next. It is very easy to think of the greedy owners first and foremost when it comes to chasing the dream of a pro-sports franchise, and it isn't as easy seeing a city's passion for a franchise in a particular sports league, or the hurdles they face chasing that dream.

One can criticise Tampa Bsy for lack of support in regards to the Devil Rays (one of the worst run franchises in pro-sports) but the passion for sports is there in the Bay area. Andelman gives you a taste of it.

This book has been around since 1994 and is still a lot of fun. These 3-D images seem to have reached their peak in the early 90's ;as far as I know anyway.I particularly enjoyed the Forward.Tom Baccei talks about their resident wizard."Some say that although his bulb seems good, his filament is short a few twists." In the words of Wizzy "Life is like a single beautiful butterfly in a gentle swirling snowstorm. When you find your own center, you'll find the butterfly. Then you can hop on and go on a ride forever."
When you've found all the 3-D images, try looking for that butterfly in the snowstorm and enjoy life.

5 out of 5 stars Through the Magic Eye Poster.......2002-08-11

Looking through a magic window into a kingdom full of imaginary beings stirs something very deep in the human imagination. If Lewis Carroll had seen stereograms, he would have written a sequel to 'Alice in Wonderland' entitled 'Through the Magic Eye Poster'! Published in 1993 by Andrews and McMeel. The second straight best-seller, at one time both Magic Eye I and Magic Eye II were at the top of the New York Times list. Sequel to the original New York Times best-seller, and the book that kicked off the stereogram craze of the 1990's. Millions of copies of this book have been sold.

2 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but doesn't have lasting power........2001-12-14

This book contains 25 pictures, two of which are three-dimensional patterns. The remaining 23 pictures appear to be just colorful patterns to the untrained eye (as it appears on the cover), but when seen properly, three-dimensional shapes zoom out of the colorful pages.
[Note: The objects are three-dimensional, but only as a paper diorama appears to be 3-D. They are flat subjects in front of a background, not fully fleshed out scenes and characters. The objects also appear with the same color and texture pattern as the background.]
Some of the shapes appearing in this book are The Sphinx, dinosaurs, ballerinas, a unicorn, and The Statue of Liberty. One scene stretches over two pages. There are 3 additional pictures, one appearing on the front cover of the book, and one on the inside front cover and another inside the back cover of the book.

In the beginning of the book, there is a foreword which contains information on how the illusion works for specific pictures within the book. The next page gives instructions and techniques on viewing the 3-D objects. There is a "cheat" section in the back of the book, which shows how each of the pictures should appear.

This book was really popular in the mid-90s, and is therefore pretty dated. It is comparable to the fun of blacklight posters, and lava lamps in the 70s. We will probably look back at this book as a piece of 90s trends or gimmicks.

Magic Eye II holds no real educational value, and is meant purely for fun. It is entertaining for the first couple of times, but most likely it will sit on your shelf after that. It would probably be best suited as a coffee table book.

                        Book Description

Critic Ivan Felt and poet Harris Conklin are the Don Quixote and Sancho Panza of baseball fandom. Or, perhaps, the Felix and Oscar of baseball fandom. Or the Pollock and de Kooning. Or the Bugs and Daffy.

The New York Mets are, of course, the New York Mets of baseball.

In 2005, Felt and Conklin, lifelong friends and lifelong fans, determined to change the course of their own careers and of baseball history by doing what had never been done: writing their beloved team to a World Championship. The 2005 Mets, with a new manager and some of the spiffiest free agents on the market, seemed ready to take the world by storm. Felt and Conklin believed themselves up to the task. It is, after all, Belief (and free agents) that makes such dreams come true.

Believeniks! is the record of a journey. Felt and Conklin would, alas, fail to see their team attain that golden pinnacle in the clouds of baseball glory. As Believeniks! reveals, however, the season’s unfolding drama would leave two of baseball’s most erudite and excitable fans forever changed.

                        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I'm not smart enough for this book .......2006-07-15

The book is basically an on-going writing conversation between two middle aged men named Ivan and Harris who have been friends and fellow Met fans for quite some time. Their conversation style is sophisticated and is certainly different than how your average sports fan talks. At times, its like listening to Dennis Miller when he made obscure references while broadcasting on Monday Night Football. Therefore, your average fantasy playing, diehard like myself is naturally going to lose interest at times. Its nice to rehash parts of the 2005 Mets season, and its even nicer at the points when their honest thoughts mirror your own. There are moments when you fondly remember small parts of the season. However, I found myself skipping through the non baseball talk, and therefore ended up missing the key point when Harris started courting and becoming engaged with Ivan's 20-something daughter. So, once I realized what was going on, I had to go back and reread. And it does get a bit fascinating when Ivan gives his backhanded blessing to the pending marriage, and it does give the reader the sense of awkwardness in being in the middle of a middle aged man dating the 20-something daughter of a lifelong friend.

Overall, the book is good for someone that considers themselves cultered and a Met fan. But if you're the average sports die hard, read Adam Rubin's book instead. I can best describe this as the movie Lost In Translation smashing into the 2005 Mets season.

I picked up this book with excitement but it turned out to be a total waste of time. I learned nothing about the Mets season OR felt it was a worthy contribution to baseball writing. Would have given it zero stars if Amazon let me.

Launched in 1900 as a match between the United States and Great Britain, the Davis Cup has grown into the largest annual team competition in sports with more than 130 nations entered in the year 2005. With Andre Agassi back on the Cup court for the first time since 2000 and Andy Roddick returning to fight for the US, the competition continues to generate heat and excitement in America and abroad.
