Book Description

Applied Methods for Trade Policy Analysis provides a comprehensive introduction to the applied economic modeling of trade policies. The book introduces the reader to trade policy concepts, welfare measurement, accounting frameworks, and both partial and general equilibrium modeling approaches. It first covers these topics at a basic level and then introduces the reader to a number of more advanced topics: imperfect competition, dynamic modeling, labor market structure, and environmental modeling. Economic graduate students, professors, and policy makers will find the collection to be an important reference tool.

      Book Description

This book is part of a series designed to facilitate identification of South American insects likely to be encountered in, on, or near water, on wetlands, and in unusual aquatic habitats. It permits identification of all known adults and larvae.
Each volume of the Encyclopedia of South American Aquatic Insects begins with a short general introduction. The scope of this volume is the Plecoptera. It includes all species known from South America as of the year 2002 and permits a state-of-the-art identification of the species. In the case of specimens belonging to undescribed species or those not previously reported from South America, it permits identification to genus or family and gives the reader reasonable certainty that his specimen does not belong to the known fauna of the continent. The keys are richly illustrated to permit non-specialists in the group to reliably identify specimens. Taxonomic revisions are intentionally avoided, but doubtful taxa are so designated in the keys. The volume is meant for anyone interested in identifying aquatic stoneflies, including entomologists, stream biologists, ecologists, zoogeographers, fishery biologists, and naturalists.

        Book Description

The Princeton Review realizes that acing the Biology exam is very different from getting straight As in school. They don't try to teach students everything there is to know about biology--only the techniques they'll need to score higher on the exam. There's a big difference. In Cracking the Virginia SOL EOC Biology, TPR will teach test takers how to think like the test makers and:

Learn tips and techniques for solving problems when test takers are unsure of the answer

Improve scores by focusing on the material most likely to appear on the test

Test knowledge with review questions for each biology concept covered

Master all the material readers will need to know to score higher: the cell, reproduction, genetics, photosynthesis, evolution, ecology, and more

***This book includes 2 full-length simulated end-of-course Biology exams. All of TPR's sample test questions are just like the ones test takers will see on the actual exam, and TPR fully explains every solution.

This is a fine publication, well put together & illustrated however, if you are looking for information about FLY FISHING TACKLE & TECHNIQUES in the Florida keys, this is not going to provide it. This book recommends & gives reviews for loging, mostly hi-end, guides, etc. It is a guide book for the well heeled, not a fly fishing info provider.

Writing for Your Life is an inspiring companion for any writer, professional or personal, who sees writing as a spiritual act. Early chapters on creativity and story would appeal to anyone interested in breaking through self-imposed boundaries, by encouraging the writer to "set yourself the task to write not only what you know but more especially what you don't know." We've all heard this before, but Deena Metzger (A Sabbath Among the Ruins) provides such resonant anecdotes and enticing exercises that it begins to seem not only doable but fun. "Even when writing about ourselves or an event that we know well," she says, "we sometimes find that the story ... is taking a direction we never expected. As it is always possible to come back to the known, it is politic, under these circumstances, to see where the story wants to go." Later chapters help writers access their inner worlds through meditation, spirit guides, mythology, tarot cards, the muse, visions, nature, and dreams. To follow Metzger's book closely requires a great deal of hard but rewarding, work. "Maintaining a spiritual practice is an ordeal like climbing a mountain," Metzger warns, "and it demands the same of us: commitment, discipline, endurance, focus, and awareness. There at the top is the sky and, perhaps, the large vision, but ultimately the meaning is in the climbing." --Jane Steinberg

In the tradition of Annie Dillard and Natalie Goldberg, this resource for writers and non-writers alike shows the act of writing to be a dynamic means of knowing, healing, and creating the body, mind, and spirit.

Metzger does the best job I've seen on jump-starting your creativity, and tying your writing into archetypes. There's lots for the reader who wants to think of writing as a spiritual exercise. BUT for me, by far, its great gift is pragmatic. Between books, or when I feel stuck, or at the beginning of a revision, I take out "On Story" and work through all her suggestions as if it were the first time. I always come up with something new and deeper relevant to THIS story--or I come up with a new story entirely. If you are ready to get past Natalie Goldberg to the goods, here's the book. It helped me tremendously with my last novel.

Banish writer's block forever with Deena Metzger's Writing for Your Life. This boldly titled book is packed with inspirational material for the writer and creative writing teacher. There are many, many books on the market promising to unleash the imaginations of beginning writers - Metzger's actually delivers the goods. Her writing exercises confront, challenge and provoke. They are tickets to the most exciting journey of your life - an exploration of the human heart. If a book could turn a person into a writer, this is the book. Of course, just reading cannot do that trick. Metzger, however, makes the idea of writing so exciting that the blank page no longer intimidates but invites. If I were shipwrecked, I would take Writing for Your Life, reams and reams of paper, enough pens for a lifetime and M F K Fisher's The Art of Eating - but that's another story....

5 out of 5 stars Still my favorite ongoing superhero comic.......2004-12-21

I am outraged at Marvel for the City of Heroes nonsense, but I still can't help myself from buying their books! Daredevil remains my favorite despite the general backlash against Bendis, and this book is one of my favorites.

Obviously, it features the Black Widow, Natasha Romanov, Matt's partner and former lover. She is always sexy, always interesting, but in this book she feels like a real human, both vulnerable and strong, and the interchange between her and Matt feels very true to life. If life happened to be about former Russian spies and men with superhuman senses....

My favorite moment is when Matt comes home and finds Natasha waiting for him, in his bed, naked. Matt's thoughts are something to the effect of, "I used to dream about this sort of thing happening to me in high school." And you can't help thinking, sure she is here to use you for protection, but I'll be damned if the Widow isn't the only lady in Matt's life who is worthy of him. He doesn't take advantage of her, because he is still in love with his estranged wife, but they are so in touch with each other in this book that you really wish he would.

I didn't think I could still love this book after all this time, but I do. "Widow," along with "Hardcore," and "Out," is some of the best superhero writing around.

4 out of 5 stars The Black Widow returns.......2004-12-11

While it may not strike the same chord as his previous Daredevil TPB's such as Hardcore and King of Hell's Kitchen, The Widow still finds Bendis' noir-ish take on Daredevil one of the best books to come out of Marvel. With the aftermath of the massive gang war lingering over him, Matt Murdock finds himself in the company of his former flame Natasha, AKA the Black Widow. It soon becomes clear that Natasha's arrival is based on some ulterior motives as they both come under fire from assassins, and Matt has a run in with disfigured Punisher villain Jigsaw. Alex Maleev's art is still superb, and his rendering of Natasha is mouth watering. Also collected here is the 40th Anniversary issue of DD, written by Bendis and featuring art from Maleev and guest artists Frank Quitely, David Finch, Greg Horn, Jae Lee, and P. Craig Russell among others.
