I know it was written by the Father of Informatics but............2007-07-01

Everyone in the field of medical informatics knows Ed Shortliffe. He has done a lot of pioneering work in the field. However, I think this book was just so-so. It is a brief overview of the field of informatics. I found it difficult to read - nothing in the book "grabs" me.

I wouldn't recommend it, really. It may be worth a look because it is authored by Shortliffe.

A bit biased towards using stem cells but not too much. He really tries to just show you the basics of the debate and the science behind the debate, which many people dont know. So if you want to understand more about stem cells, where they come from, their potential, the alternatives, etc. this is the book to start with.

Scott's book explains stem cell research for laypeople, with enough personal anecdotes and wisecracks to keep the science-shy awake.

He doesn't exaggerate potential applications or limitations, and he explains that stem cells could be good for much more than stem-cell therapy. The thorough ethics section concisely and precisely covers everyone's views.

Here's the first two sentence from a review of the book in the magazine Nature on May 10. "Christopher Scott's little book Stem Cell Now is fundamentally a primer on stem-cell research, suitable for lay readers and freshmen. It offers accessible descriptions of stem-cell science and analysis of associated ethical and political issues."

A good "Brief Introduction".......2007-01-21

What can I say ... if there is some line of medical research these days that could have promising results for the treatment of some of the difficult illnesses known, that is stem cell. This book provide a layman introduction to the subject, the different types of stem cells and lines of investigation. Also, half of the book is dedicated to the ethical problems that embryonic stem cell research is facing, specially in the U.S.

This book should have two ratings. I rate it higher (4 stars) for young readers. For more science 'savvy' adults the science is rather weak and much is over simplified. I was looking for something on hESC with more depth but not at the professional level. I'm still looking. However, I highly recommend this book to youngsters and others with limited biology background. The politics chapters obviously (from the title) favors the pro-hESC research, but they are fair. Again there could be more depth.

Social & Scientific Impact.......2006-06-10

Scott has done an excellent job in concisely presenting both the social & scientific impact of stem cell science, in an engaging & objective manner. I particularly enjoy the sections that illustrate the complicated ethical arguments behind the current debates about the field.
'Stem cell now' is one of the most readable book in the market that provides readers with good introduction to this promising scientific field. I would also recommend Ann Parson's 'The Proteus Effect', which vividly presents stories about the scientists behind the scenes, and also Scott Anderson's 'Human embryonic stem cells', which provides more technical detail about the science.

I used it to make an interactive bulletin board for my classroom. It is simple but it gets the point across. I use it with my 8th and 9th grade students, and they don't mind that it's a picture book.

Detailed examples of food chains and food webs, but hard to follow the arrows in the illustrations in food chains.

My son would prefer just reading about the types of meals each animal species eats and how they kill it as opposed to the food chain process. There are several pages that have arrows pointing from one item to another and it gets confusing trying to sort it all out.

We begin with seeing a caterpillar eating a leaf on an apple tree until he becomes the dinner of the arriving wren. When a hawk comes around he eats the wren. In this example the food chain begins with the leaf and ends with the hawk. It is described how the animal at the top of the food chain is the last eater because it is the one no one else will eat.

There are other short chains like when you eat an apple off a tree or drink milk in a glass. The cow eats the grass and the milk comes from the cow. There is a detailed diagram with a girl eating a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, an apple and a glass of milk. Food keeps us alive and animals need to catch the food they need to survive. First we begin with green plants, as they are the only living things that can make their own food and do not need to eat something else. Animals depend on green plants as well.

During the summer months Antartica comes alive with tiny green plants that are eaten by krill. The squid will in turn eat the krill, which looks like shrimp. The killer whale can eat a sperm whale or a blue whale.

When you change your eating patterns you are changing the food chain as well. Fishermen kill krill but they cannot kill them all since this is what happened when they almost wiped out the sea otters in the Pacific Sea. It is important to take care of the earth so all living things have something to eat and in turn we help them and ourselves in the process.

By the time the kids are at this level most of them already have some idea of the food chain concept (and anybody who has played Magic School Bus Animals definitely will!). It sits right at the cross roads of two levels- a solid first grade book, perhaps.

How about publishing the complete NFL rule book instead of the abridged and edited version. This was a waste. I don't want just some of the rules, I wan't them all. Anyone who is interested in a book like this should be aware.

Great Branding (Work)book.......2005-12-13

There are so many books on branding out there that try to explain the concept of branding. Most fail to do so, but instead, baffle the reader with jargon, theorems and charts. This book creates an easy to understand definition of branding. It also provides exercises to help build your brand and great real world examples to prime your branding ideas.

This book is very well written and very readable! Make sure you have a pen and paper to take notes and work on the exercises! This book will be a staple in your business book collection. I still refer to it months after reading it.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I read this book. The ideas and examples made complete sense. It seems like such a simple concept, but it's amazing how many large corporations miss the point. I plan on implementing many of these concepts into my own company. I have no doubt that the ideas will only benefit my company and myself personally. Thanks for sharing, you have great in-sight.

This book really gave me the courage to think outside of the box from the start and really helped me understand how vital branding is to a marketing campaign. Being a fairly recent college grad with a degree in marketing, I discovered concepts and ideas that are definitely helpful in the world of advertising today and it also was a great addition to my college education.

It was fun to read, and it was interactive... allowing you to apply your own marketing and advertising scenarios to help you succeed.

An Outstanding Book!!!.......2005-01-15

I've been involved in sales and marketing for the last 15 years. In that time I have read countless books on the subject of branding - some good, most bad.

I recently took a job as the president of a creative agency that was in desperate need of a new brand identity. Karen Post's book, Brain Tattoo has made my job infinitely easier! I found Chapter 5 - How to Construct Your Tattoo Plan - especially helpful.

What I love most about the book is that it is based on real-world, hands-on experience and not classroom theory.

I would highly recommend this book if you are interested in creating a memorable brand that will forever be tattooed in the minds of your consumers.
