Book Description

Protestors now routinely fill the streets when any large, formal meeting dealing with international economic issues takes place. They express concern about the potential social and environmental costs of globalization and want negotiators to address these issues in trade agreements and international organizations. In addition, to the debate over whether and how to link labor standards to trade has led to an impasse in American trade policy for much of the past decade and the hands of US trade negotiators. Proposals to "let the market do it" or "let the International Labor Organization (ILO) do it" abound but it is less common to find any serious analysis of just how activists can galvanize consumers to demand that corporations raise labor standards in their global operations or how the ILO can become more effective. In this study, Elliott and Freeman move beyond the debate on the relative merits and risks of a social clause in trade agreements and focus on practical approaches for improving labor standards in a more integrated global economy. The authors examine both what is being done in these areas, and what more needs to be done to ensure that steady and tangible progress toward universal respect for core labor standards is made. While concluding that the ILO should have primary responsibility for labor standards, the book also suggests that the WTO should consider how to address egregious and willful violations of core labor standards if they are trade-related.

4 out of 5 stars Labour standards under globalization.......2007-07-15

This is a very good book on labour standards and the way to improve them using international trade and globalization. Written in a simple and easy way, it offers also a comprehensive review of the recent literature on these topics.
In the first parts is discussed the role of the ILO, above all its instruments to spread labour standards: monitoring policy, technical cooperation and enforcement or sanctions.
Then there is a broad overview of the ways to link labour standards to international trade and is presented a more pragmatic approach to connect them. The general view on this sense is that globalization and labour standards are complementary factors, and not competing, in a general process able to spread benefits of globalization in a way coherent with labour rights.
I believe it's a very rich source for researchers and policymakers, complete and easy to read.

          Book Description

Gaining a better understanding of the way organizations work through the study of the symbols connected to them is the subject of Studying Organizational Symbolism. Michael Owen Jones briefly discusses the most obvious symbolic aspects of organizations--corporate logos, office sizes, use of titles--but focuses on the less obvious but crucial aspect of expressive forms of symbolism--storytelling, institutional jargon, and workplace personalization, among others. Jones carefully defines organizational symbolism and then explains the various methodologies that assist the researcher in documenting it. Finally, he examines the symbolism inherent in doing research on organizations. Researchers interested in any facet of organizational studies will find Studying Organizational Symbolism to be a useful and necessary guide.

            Book Description

Published in cooperation with the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences and its journal Organization Science How do organizations change, develop, grow, or terminate over time? In this volume, editors George P. Huber and Andrew H. Van de Ven focus on longitudinal field research methods for studying organizational change--methods that are fundamental to understanding the dynamics of organizational life and to developing and testing theories of organizational adaptation, change, innovation, and redesign. The chapters focus on the design and conduct of longitudinal research in the field and deal with methods to analyze and interpret process patterns in longitudinal data. The authors, all renowned organizational researchers, emphasize a wide range of methodological issues involved in longitudinal field research, including ethnographic methods, longitudinal and comparative case studies, event history analysis, and real-time tracking of events. They also address various procedures that can be used to tabulate, code, and interpret both quantitative and qualitative data collected in the field. For any scholar or researcher in organization studies, Longitudinal Field Research Methods is an essential resource.

              Book Description

There is increasing recognition that advances in medicine are only part of the answer to better health care. These advances, together with rising expectations of health care users, mean that demands on the way we organize and deliver services will become greater. It is therefore essential that we advance our understanding and knowledge of how best to organize and deliver health services. This book, written by experienced teachers and researchers, introduces research methods from a wide range of social science disciplines and applies them to health service research.

                Book Description

In this, the first of a two-volume paperback edition of the landmark Handbook of Organization Studies, editors Stewart R. Clegg, Cynthia Hardy, and Walter R. Nord survey the field of organization studies. Central to the enterprise has been a concern to reflect and honor the manifest diversity of the field, including recognition of the extent to which the very notion of a single field of organization studies is debated. Part I locates the study of organization by reviewing some of the most significant theoretical paradigms to have shaped our understanding. Part II reflects on the relationships between theory and research in organization studies. The Study of Organization is an ideal volume around which to build courses on organization theory and research methodology.

                  5 out of 5 stars THE HORSE'S MOUTH.......2006-08-15

C.G. Jung Speaking is a classic. It is superbly edited by William McGuire and R.F.C. Hull, the former was the executive editor of the Collected Works of C.G. Jung and editor of The Freud /Jung Letters, the latter was translator of the Collected Works until his death in 1974.
C.G. Jung Speaking is a chronological series of interviews and encounters including several kinds of testimony from Jung and about him. Each segment is introduced and given a context ranging from a boyhood memoir of his friend Albert Oeri to six months before his death on June 6, 1961 when he met with the diplomat Miguel Serrano. Topics range from a Cosmopolitan article Diagnosing the Dictators to a discussion with Charles Lindberg on Flying Saucers.
The following is a sample from an informal talk titled Is Analytical Psychology a Religion?

"We all must do just what Christ did. We must make our experiment. We must make mistakes. We must live our own vision of life...People call me a religious leader. I am not that. I have no message, no mission; I attempt only to understand. We are philosophers in the old sense of the word, lovers of wisdom."
Much misunderstood and maligned, Dr. Jung has been described elsewhere as atheist, a mystic, occultist, prophet, poet, polygamist, misogynist, con-man, anti-Semite, racist, psychotic, guru, Gnostic, and American spy.
As my Zurich training analyst, A.R.Pope remarked: "It is always better to get information from the horse's mouth rather than the other end."

                  5 out of 5 stars Prophetic & Profound.......2006-06-07

In this most interesting volume, Jung explains many of his concepts/models in response to interviews, questions, etc. giving the information a different slant & providing needed context on the spot. Topics include: psychological types, anima/animus, the value of artistic expression, the value of education, discipline of children (p. 58 "It is not a rare occurrence for a somewhat severe reprimand administered to a child in his playpen or his bed to affect him during his entire lifetime"), the nature of neuroses, the faults of nations & mobs, the psychological value of land vs. urban living (p. 204 "I am fully committed to the idea that human existence should be rooted in the earth"), individuation vs. therapy, non-politically correct views on the differences between men & women (p. 245 "Women are much tougher than men underneath. To call women the weaker sex is sheer nonsense"), music & analysis, the persona (societal image/roles), mandalas as images of the Self, psychosomatic illnesses, Rorschach tests, mythology & archetypes, psychotherapy & the transference, the nature & value of marriage, Plato, astrology, & more. I took over 70 quotes for my collection.

Some of the most important quotes concern knowledge of self & others despite considerable resistance to it: p. 244 "Men are inclined to resent any interference with their way of thinking and their hidebound convictions" & p. 248 "We must begin to learn about man until every Jekyll can see his Hyde." Further, pp. 129-130 "you always become the thing you fight the most...When you fight a thing you have to get very close to it, it is likely to infect you." Others address differences: p. 194 "different nationalities and different races have different outlooks and different psychologies" & p. 413 "It [Christianity] goes wrong in so far as it believes itself to be the only truth." Jung's wisdom shines through & it's timeless:

PAST: pp. 271-2 But do you know who anticipated my entire psychology in the 18th century? The Hasidic Rabbi Baer from Meseritz whom they called the Great Maggid. He was a most impressive man.

PRESENT: p. 389 All statements we make about God are statements about the unconscious.

FUTURE: p. 374 The great problem before us is over-population, not the atom bomb.

                  5 out of 5 stars I second Griebel...........2000-06-02

...you must have this; there are treasures here you won't find anywhere else. One of the finest collections of Jung and Jungiana I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars A must! if you are interested in Jung........1998-09-23

A must! if you are interested in C.G. Jung and his psychology.

Why is "C.G. Jung Speaking" a must?

FIRST OF ALL, simply because the Collected Works doesn't include the information found here. These are not works of Jung, but the works of others--interviews, characterizations etc. In other words, you will find some information here which you could only dig out with great difficulty, scattered in numerous works.

SECOND, in the interviews Jung is sometimes caught off-guard by a surprise question, and so, forced to develop on the aspects of his theories that he may perhaps have though self-explanatory.

THIRD, you see Jung through the eyes of others -- Esther Harding, Charles Baudoin, Michael Fordham, Charles Lindbergh, and others.

Some subjects, touched upon in this book:

                  - Jung's own type, according to his typology (Introvert. And Thinking, Intuition, Sensing/Perception, and Feeling, in that order)

                  - Freud's type (extravert--hence his pleasure principle)

                  - Adler's type (introvert--hence his power complex)

                  - The psychology of dictators (Hitler, Mussolini, Stalin, and, yes, Roosewelt)

                  - The nature of intuition

                  - introvert vs. extravert intuitives

                  - Creative achievement

                  - Jung's breaking with Freud.

                  - Jung and Nazism/anti-Semitism (Jung defends himself in December 1949)

                  And the somewhat transcendent questions:

                  - God

                  - death and life after death

                  - astrology and alchemy

Edited by William McGuire, executive editor of the Collected Works (CW), in collaboration with R.F.C. Hull, translater of CW, it is no surprise to find that this excellent book contains numerous references to CW, as well as a comprehensive index.

                            Book Description

A collection of personal stories about the experience of competing in one's first Ironman triathlon. This is the ultimate test of endurance: a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run, all raced end-to-end in one grueling day-and these stories tell it straight: what to expect, how to prepare, what was rewarding, what was miserable. These stories come from men and women of all ages and abilities. Some are stories from the champions, and some from those who did not finish. Together they testify to all the joy and agony of the race; and they provide priceless personal advice on nutrition, equipment, clothing, mental preparation, emotional fatigue, terrain, and weather. An unforgettable ode to an extraordinary endurance sport-a book for anyone who wants to become an ironman.

This book is a great read for someone training for their first IM. The stories give you an idea of what to expect when the big day comes. They also are very inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars very inspiring stories, but it can get repetitive.......2005-09-23

"Becoming an Ironman" is a collection of personal stories of the first experience of many athletes attempting their first Ironman Triathlon. An Ironman Triathlon is a race consisting of a 2.4 mile swim followed by a 112 mile bike ride followed by a marathon (26.2 miles). Some runners may consider the marathon to be the ultimate endurance event and with good reason, the marathon is not to be taken lightly, but Ironman only lets you run a marathon after one has traveled 114.4 miles. Since "Ironman" is actually a trademark of the World Triathlon Corporation, the "Ironman" name can only be used for a race sponsored by the WTC. But any triathlon of 140.6 miles can be considered an "Iron" distance race and the finishers are no less an Ironman as those finishing a sponsored race. 140.6 miles is a long, long way to go, and typically there is a 17 hour time limit. In "Becoming an Ironman" many athletes will tell of their experience in their own words.

The stories contained in this book are broken into a variety of sections. There are stories from those who are middle of the pack athletes and who struggled with the Ironman but still found strength to complete it. There is a section featuring athletes who learned in their first attempt that they were quite good at this distance and turned in excellent times which put them among the leaders. Conversely the stories of those who finished Ironman with only a minute or an hour to spare are no less compelling. Then there are the Did Not Finish (DNF) stories of those who for one reason or another had to drop out of the race or just could not make it to the finish line in time (the one who finished some six minutes after 17 hours was tough to take).

Every one of these stories provides inspiration to push through my pain in a race and furthers my desire to one day attempt and complete an Ironman despite the pain I know it will cause. But these same stories collected in "Becoming an Ironman" suffers from the fact that while reading a handful of these stories is easy and inspiring, reading every story back to back becomes repetitive. Yes, everyone struggled and gutted it out and provides a reason to be inspired, but it is essentially the same story every time with minor variations. The different sections helps as the stories are grouped into similar kinds of experiences, but it is still a lot of take at one time.

My recommendation is that this is an excellent book about the Ironman experience from the perspective of the average (if "average" can describe anyone attempting Ironman) athlete, but the reader should only read a few stories a day. Each story is only a few pages long and this way there will be less of a sense of burnout by the time the end is reached. Inspiring stuff, here.

I'm not training for an ironman and never have, but a friend who's done one gave me this book to read and I rather feel inclined to do one now. I'm training for my first marathon now and, at the risk of getting ahead of myself, I'm already looking to bigger and better things.

This book, I'll admit, is a bit repetitive at times. It consists of a couple-dozen 5-10 page stories about people's ironmans. I found the four DNF stories the most interesting and meaningful. Many of the stories end up sounding the same; "it was hard, I got really tired, but I made it!". Nonetheless, I think the insight from these people is pretty cool and I'd recommend this before taking on the challenge oneself.

Elsewhere I saw somebody mention a problem with this book was the lack of info on each person and I agree fully. There is a short paragraph at the end of each story about what the person is doing now but that's it. I'd like some more details like: Did they compete much in the past (if they didn't mention it in their essay, you have no clue)? What training approach did they use (I don't want a training manual, but still)?

My wife, who will read anything, found this book incredibly boring. Other than the DNF section, she couldn't be bothered, but then again I think only really endurance competitors understand why they do it so it's not a book intended for a wide audience.

                            5 out of 5 stars Ironman inspiration!.......2005-01-13

This book is filled with the inspiring first-person accounts of Ironman participants. It provides a personal insight into the struggles and aspirations of a wide variety of competitors, from first-time amateurs to seasoned professionals. The stories are compelling and personal - the writing is not edited much at all, allowing the voice of the writer to come through strongly, so that each story offers a unique perspective. I found the book consistently moving and inspirational, and although I'm just starting to train for my first triathlon, I can't help but dream of one day becoming an Ironman myself! If you have any interest in triathlons, or endurance sports in general, or if you just enjoy reading about personal athletic triumph, read this book.

Even though writing about sex probably ranks on the joy scale somewhere between reading about it and having it, Elizabeth Benedict feels that many writers don't do justice to the act. So she has developed a novel idea: a guide book for fiction writers seeking to create better sex scenes. Benedict, a teacher in Princeton University's Creative Writing Program, doesn't concern herself with pornography but rather with a contention that sex scenes are pivotal in carrying the plot, story and character of some novels. Her point is emphasized through many interviews she conducted with authors on their experience with and views on writing about sex. Now, if she would only visit the film industry . . .

                            Book Description

Five years after it was first published, The Joy of Writing Sex remains the classic guide to writing convincing sex scenes. Elizabeth Benedict covers all the issues, from the first time, to married sex and adultery, to sex in the age of AIDS.Her instruction, supported with examples from the works of today's most respected writers-among them, Dorothy Allison, Russell Banks, Alan Hollinghurst, Joyce Carol Oates, Carol Shields, and John Updike-focuses on crafting believable sex scenes that hinge on freshness of character, dialogue, mood, and plot.In this revised edition, Benedict addresses the latest sexual revolution, intimacy on the Internet; adds new interviews with Edmund White, Darren Strauss, Stephen McCauley, and other writers; and updates her selections to include examples from the best fiction of the past few years.

                            1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointed.......2007-09-22

I agree with the review that says this book is dull, dry and boring. Very hard to get into, and hard to stick with it.

I am an aspiring romance writer and bought this book to help me write the love scenes. It did not meet my needs in any form whatsoever.

This book is more a discussion of the different types of sex: heterosexual, homosexual, masturbation, incest, rape, adultry, etc, and would be better categorized at such. It also seems to be aimed at those who write sex scenes that are just for the sake of sex, not scenes about love shared between two people. While it may be helpful to some, it wasn't to me and my writing.

This is the first time I've ever requested a refund from Amazon, it was that bad.

As a writer of a *non-fiction* book about sex, I found plenty of fine instruction in this book for fiction writers. Benedict skillfully blends tips and well-developed advice from a writing instructor (I wish I could take her course!) with excerpts from writers she admires who illustrate her points. This is a marvelous book for writers about sexuality -- non-fiction as well as fiction -- and for any writer interested in craft.

We get it already -- good sex in literature should be about more than just titillating your audience. What if you just want to write good smut? What then? What if you're not interested in pulling forth the great American novel? How to Write a Dirty Story by Bright gave more information on techniques for writing interesting scenes, whatever your plot motivations (or lack thereof). And all of the excerpts about why writing good sex scenes is important seemed superfluous. If I didn't already know why I wanted to write good sex scenes, I would never have picked up the book in the first place. Still, it was a good piece to round out my collection. I recommend buying it used.

And, if this is an illustration of the "joy" of writing sex, I would hate to see an illustration of the "horror" or writing sex.

One of the short-shorts in the version I purchased of this book details the experience of a male gas station clerk being highly aroused when another male enters his gas station and rapes him in the back room. Is this a sex scene worthy of a story to be sold as literature, or is it a transcribed version of something someone saw at a pay site on the Internet? Do we really want to be sending a message to the public that rape is an acceptable, exciting form of sexual intercourse? I can think of several victims I know who would not appreciate that, one of whom was killed by her attacker.

                            Book Description

Back in the 40s, 50s, and 60s, it was fairly easy to plan for a secure future. People picked a career, a spouse, and a place to live, and those basic decisions put them on a predictable course for the rest of their lives. Especially if they were lucky enough to land at a big corporation with great benefits and smart enough to buy stocks.

In the 70s, 80s, and 90s, technology and global competition transformed the world. An increasingly strong economy masked spiraling instability in the workplace and the world. A rising stock market lulled people into thinking they were in control of their lives.

But now we've entered a totally new era, which Roger McNamee calls the New Normal. It's a time of great uncertainty—about terrorism, corporate scandals, the outsourcing of jobs overseas, and much more. The old safety nets aren't coming back, even when the economy recovers. But the good news is that the New Normal also offers tremendous opportunities. This book—by one of Silicon Valley's most insightful and successful investors—explains how to make the most of your life, career, and money by embracing the future.

The New Normal is the era of the individual. In companies large and small, each person now matters more than ever before. The Internet has finally made it easy to launch and grow a real business. For entrepreneurs and managers, the global economy opens previously untapped sources of supply and demand, cost savings and innovation. Individual investors now have access to tools and knowledge that were, until recently, restricted to professionals.

Roger McNamee has written a sweeping book in the tradition of Megatrends that clarifies this new era and gives readers a practical blueprint for success.

                            3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2005-05-10

Good insights, but you can get the same info from following Wired or Google News. The book just seems forced to me, as if the author had something to say in about a chapter or two and then just extended it several more chapters. Why spend $$...check it out from the library.

                            4 out of 5 stars 1st half is Druckeresque.......2005-02-12

According to the author, globalization and technology will substantially change our world. This is nothing new, but the author provides a forecast of what tomorrow's business climate will look like. The individual will have more power than ever as employees and consumers. Independent contractors and will be far more in demand as well as service organizations designed fill a niche for larger ones. Anyone who has strong specialized skills will have far more leverage in the company. China and India will be a powerful, if not dominant, force in the global economy. The stock market will be influenced more by individual investors. Most business will require longer operations, requiring workers to work longer hours and be on alert for 24/7. Technology will enable smaller business to effectively compete against larger business better than any other time in history. Scale matters less than ever. Overall, we are moving towards a very favorable long term trend towards the global economy where especially the talented will be richly awarded, but those who lack specialized skills might be left out of the all the wealth generated by the increase in globalization and technology.

The author is a very deep business thinker, almost as insightful as Peter Drucker, which is really saying something. The author is gifted in forecasting the future trends based on the present data. The 2nd half of this book wasn't nearly as good. Maybe the author was writing fillers (as many authors are forced to do to meet page quotas mandated by the publishers).

5 out of 5 stars More than Investment Advice.......2005-01-20

If you're looking for a "how-to" book to help you find your way in the new economy, there are countless insights in "The New Normal" that will help you understand the major issues facing investors today. If you are looking for an honest account of how an individual in his twenties with good instincts and a willingness to do research, created his own place in the world, this book is for you. What was valuable to me in reading "The New Normal" were McNamee's strategies for thinking outside the box, and his suggestions about how to develop a sound approach to entrepreneurship. The book also gives the clear message that technology IS the future. No matter what field you are in, there are ideas and points of reference here that will enhance your career and heighten your success. In this book, you will find no-nonsense, sound advice based on experience, intelligence and a genuine desire to help others achieve their goals.

3 out of 5 stars A lot of fluff, some substance.......2004-12-30

Bought this on a whim. Like many business books, it offers a tantalizing insight into a successful person's life. But like many business books, it is long on broad, overarching concepts but short on actual reccomendations. I too can be a pundit and sagacious by saying, " To make money, all one has to do is pick the correct stock and buy it." - but without reccomendations on what that one might be, it is less useful advice.

I think this is a useful book for someone who is in their mid 20's and is beginning to make their way in the world. The advice it offers about a constant state of change in the future is valid, but it doesn't offer much concrete information on exactly what to do with that information. An enjoyable read, but not a must-read or a first line book.

A "rock star venture capitalist" in the literal sense, I was curious to hear McNamee's views beyond the two-minute clips aired on CNBC. Unlike many of the business books penned by one-hit wonders from the last few years, McNamee has posted super-size returns on early stage and public investments for two decades. While the title suggests a total paradigm shift in today's market economy, the chapters are refreshingly rooted in basic business fundamentals. McNamee doesn't attribute his success to a genius mind or visionary powers -- he writes about working smarter (utilizing technology, exploiting your own competitive advantages, cultivating your network). The New Normal echoes multiple authors: Horatio Alger (get out and do something); Howard Schultz (love what you do); Peter Lynch (invest in things you understand...learn from your mistakes); Warren Buffett (buy and hold...stay the course). McNamee layers in enough self-deprecating stories to remind you he's not Superman (despite succeeding in life, work, music, etc.). His investment theories offer good counsel to portfolio managers and college students alike (e.g. innovation comes in three phases: infrastructure, enabling technology, content & applications. Know what phase we're in to avoid investing in good ideas before their time.). He seems like the kind of guy you'd want to invest your money (he stays in Best Westerns on the road!), serve as your mentor or professor, negotiate multilateral trade agreements, play guitar at your wedding or babysit your kid. Good read.
