Book Description
This classic work is an exhaustive philosophical, historical, and religious look at the relationship between Catholic and Protestant religious doctrine and both the historical and ideological growth of capitalism. Starting with a definition of capitalism, Fanfani examines how that definition squares with Catholic and Protestant teaching. He then looks at the historical development of the capitalistic mindset or mentality, and examines the growth of the mindset historically in light of both the Protestant and Catholic doctrine on economic life. This text will be of interest to all students of economic thought, philosophy, and Catholic or Christian studies.
Customer Reviews:
Simplistic nonsense for the economically illiterate........2005-11-30
This work has the dubious distinction of having convinced many well-meaning Catholics to become socialists. It consists in a collation of warmed-over Aristotle, economic misunderstanding and historical fairytale, all put together to justify the state interfering in every aspect of your (economic) life.
Did you know Capitalism was really identical to Communism? That you shouldn't be allowed to sell anything below what it cost you to buy/produce it (whatever that is supposed to mean)? That the state should not allow you to take out a loan or buy insurance, let alone advertise your business.
If you are willing to believe this kind of nonsense, by all means, go ahead and buy this, and I pray sincerely that you never end up in government.
The posthumous edition of Amintore Fanfani's seminal study.......2004-07-09
Catholicism, Protestantism, And Capitalism by the late Amintore Fanfani (1908-1999), is an impressively comprehensive and scholarly presentation between traditional Catholic doctrine and the spirit of economic capitalism. This posthumous edition of Amintore Fanfani's seminal and ground breaking study is enhanced for contemporary readers by an informed and informative foreword by Charles M.A. Clark (Professor of Economics, Tobin College of Business, and Senior Fellow, Vincentian Center for Church and Society at St. John's University, New York) and Giorgio Campanini (Professor of the History of Political Thought, University of Parma, Italy). Catholicism, Protestantism, And Capitalism is an uncomplicated read and especially commended to the attention the those of the Christian community with an interest in economics and theology.
Deeply Penetrating.......2004-06-23
For anyone who is interested in why our culture has produced the Enron's, WorldCom's and the like; or why increasingly our society is becoming one big hommage to corporate giants, have a look at this classic work of Catholic economic history.
The kind of economy existing up until the Protestant Reformation placed the economy at the service of persons, families and local communities. Today, it is the economy that is the lord of us all. We are "consumers" and "human resources." For anyone who hopes and dreams of a better way, this classic work of scholarship will give you the threads to understanding how we got to where we are and provide glimmers of what we must do to recover a person centered economy.

missing alot of detail...........2006-08-15
Wow, I am really suprised this book garnered as much positive feedback as it has. I am a nursing major, and I was apalled at the lack of detail in this book. I ended up using the A&P text from my 201 class for the majority of this class. Maybe it was the questions my instructor asked, but I constanatly had to go to other sources in order to find the information I needed. If anyone finds themself in this situation, Ken Saladin's text by the same name is the best!!!
Best A&P book for nursing majors.......2006-05-13
This is a required reading text for anatomy and physiology I and II at the college I attend, and I have nothing but praise for the author and illustrators of this book. It is as comprehensive as A&P can get, and as difficult as the material is to learn, it is broken down into systems so that it is not too overwhelming.
The reason why I give this text 5 stars isn't because of the text -- but the CD and online access that is included. Instead of just seeing diagrams of the heart on paper, the CD makes the heart come "alive" by enabling the viewer to see the heart chambers pumping and blood flowing through the major arteries. This is just one of many examples of how learning is enriched with the CD. I could not have made an A in A&P without it!
Wow!.......2005-05-22
I bought the book the first time because I had to. I bought it the second time because I wanted to.
I am a Nursing student. I had to have two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology for Nursing. Like most students, I sold the book back to the bookstore after the second semester. MISTAKE! About half-way through my first semester of Nursing I found myself wishing I had the old A&P book again. So, I went and bought it.
If there is anything you want to know about A&P, this book has it! What a marvelous book!
It's not a book for the casual reader; find something else for that. But if you want to know the details of the body and how it works, BUY THIS BOOK!
Most of the chapters have a beginning that kinda describes the particular section of the body. The remainder of the chapter then goes into details, and I mean details - as much as you can possibly want.
I cannot imagine a better-written book anywhere!
This is one of my favorite textbooks.......2005-03-06
Although I'm not a big fan of college textbooks since they can be very long and tedious to read, this textbook is to the contrary. It had very relevent information relating to my college anatomy and physiology class that was right on pace with my college lectures. This is a good knowledge base for learning A and P. I especially liked the chapters on muscles and bones. Very interesting. However, when I study for college exams I usually also use study guides. I highly recommend Anatomy and Physiology for Dummies and for very to the point test preparation questions I found Anatomy and Physiology:Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations Volume 1 and 2 to give me instant feedback of what I knew or didn't know for the test. Because of these books I did a lot better then I expected since I never had any prior teachings in anatomy and physiology.
Written to be Understood.......2005-02-21
I am in my second semester using Elaine N. Marieb's Human Anatomy & Physiology book. She has a great ability to take a very complicated subject and break it down so that it can be learned not just memorized. She doesn't skip the details that are important to learn . She makes it more understandable. This book will be a great reference for years to come.

A & P book review.......2006-07-10
Book is in pretty good condition with slightly bent edges as is nearly every used book. The spin is not damaged and all of the pages are intact. Nothing is highlighted in the book.
Fantastic Book.......2005-04-09
I have to say, I used the 5th edition of this book and know that the 6th is better as I worked with another student who had the 6th edition. EVERYbody who wants to know, particulary physiology, should have this book for reference. The anatomy is also excellent particular the discussions on vascular and the venous / arterial systems and the nervous system discussions are clear!. I reference this book all the time.
Great Book.......2005-01-22
I'm taking Human Anatomy now in college and LOVE IT!!! This book is great and makes learning fun. The human atlas that comes with the book is great for when you have to learn all the bones and it has some cool pictures. I recommend this book to anyone interested in Anatomy.
GREAT Customer Service and SPEEDY.......2004-12-16
I ordered this textbook for my daughter for Christmas. It arriveed at my doorstep within 6 days of putting the order online! It was in great shape, exactly what I wanted, and short turnaround time! I will definitely order from this company again. They were great!
Good Book.......2004-06-06
This is a good book for college anatomy and physiology. It is very thorough and descriptive. Goes in depth into nervous, muscular, skeletal and endocrine systems to name a few. I also recommend Key Facts of Anatomy and Physiology isbn;0971999694. This last book shows you what's important to study for. Both books highly recommended.
Customer Reviews:
CD ROM.......2006-03-02
THE BOOK IS GOOD BUT THE CD ROM IN NOT IN DEPTH ENOUGH. I WISH THAT IT HAD MORE INTERACTIVE MATERIAL.
Almost Perfect.......2006-02-06
Leaving asside it's exhorbitant price, this is an excellent text book. The subject is covered clearly and consisely and the charts, photos, and illustrations are clear and bright. The only area that needs improvement in my opinion is the vocabulary, which would be much more usefull if it was presented in the side-bars like it is in many texts.
Essential for A&P Students........2005-01-10
I own the International Edition of this book, ISBN 0-321-20413-1.
Very good use of English, clear and easy to understand - even complex areas are explained fully and legibly. Excellent use of rich graphics and photographs where appropriate, and a very useful set of appendices at the back with everything from normal values for most blood tests to a Periodic Table. Accompanying CD and website both very helpful for the A&P student.
Highly recommended.
Why 4 stars? Since I am not in the USA, I have to use a scaled down version of the MyA&P website and find it just a little confusing to find my way in (once I'm there it's OK though). Also a tad heavy to be lugging around campus all day!

The Last Season (P.S.)
ASIN: 0743243692 |
Book Description
A memoir of extraordinary depth and searing honesty, In the Ghost Country is the story of Peter Hillary's physical and emotional journey across the icy wastes of Antarctica. A place where the thoughts and memories of a lifetime were called forth by the blank slate of the Antarctic snows -- so real that the ghosts of lost friends and loved ones walked with him in the white maelstrom.
In the Antarctic summer of 1998-99, Peter Hillary and two companions skied to the South Pole -- each man pulling a 440-pound sled 900 miles across some of the most forbidding country on earth. The plan was to complete the tragic journey of Captain Robert Falcon Scott, to the Pole and back. But under the pressure of a relentless media spotlight, fatal team chemistry, and food and fuel stores, the expedition fragmented into hostile isolation. Instead of completing Scott's journey, they found they were repeating it.
For Peter Hillary, this was the loneliest trek of his life. Estranged from his companions, tortured by the sensory deprivation of "the great white everywhere," Hillary's journey became a hallucinogenic pilgrimage through a country where "he could see the dead and the places of the dead": the ghosts of too many friends who had perished at his side in the mountains; and most powerfully, the ghost of his beloved mother, who it seemed "had turned up on the ice to keep me company."
In the Ghost Country is the story of that trip, a chronicle of profound isolation, grief, and loneliness. It is a meditation on a lifetime spent on the edge. Told here are the tragedies: on Ama Dablam in Nepal, a near perfect climb until its shocking finish with an unexpected death; on Makalu where half the party was wiped out; on Everest where two more were lost, including a great friend; and later on K2, in 1995, where Hillary barely survived the storm that killed seven people.
But here also are the "marvelous times": Growing up in New Zealand, where the family's holiday adventures were turned into documentaries; first seeing Everest at seven years of age; the near-fatal teenage adventures; working on the schools and hospitals that Sir Edmund built for the Nepalese people; traveling with his father and Neil Armstrong to the North Pole; summiting Everest twice.
Informed by a strong literary sensibility, In the Ghost Country is compelling contemplation of adventure and a joyful tribute to "the rapture" of getting "out there" on the edge.

A Wonderful Tale.......2007-06-07
This tale set on an epic trip to the South Pole, Peter Hillary displays the wonderful story telling skills of the classic adventurer. This books enjoys not only a great adventure, but flash backs to a lifetime of adventure from the great mountains of the world. From the tragedy of loosing his mother and sister, to following in his father's footsteps to the top of Mount Everest. You will love this great book and gain more insight into the legacy of the Hillary family.
What a profounding disappointing read.......2005-05-25
Perhaps I have just been spoiled by reading truly extraordinary survival accounts like: Adrift by Stephen Callahan, Touching The Void by Joe Simspon, Into Thin Air by John Krakauer and Endurance: Shackleton's Incredible Voyage by Alfred Lansing -- but this book just SUCKED. I bought it after reading the reviews and comments of other readers here at Amazon, and picked it up to read during vacation. I made it to around page 100 and started wondering when the book was going to really start hitting its stride. It never did. About 30 pages later I simply began skimming and spot reading until finally I reached the last page -- whereupon I literally pitched it in the trash.
WHY this book was written has much to do with why it is so bad: It's a rear guard action by Peter Hillary who, in spite of his famous pedigree (his dad, Sir Edmund Hillary, is the legendary conquerer of Everest) is a decidedly middlin' mountaineer with hardly any record of achievement worthy of true distinction, yet who nevertheless is saddled with an enormous ego (he goes on about living life in the spotlight? as if he were "a rock star'), got dissed by other members of this expedition who later wrote and spoke about what a laggard they thought Hillary was. This book is Hillary's pathetic attempt to repudiate some of that ... as if anyone out there in the world really cares. Peter who?
I was also dissapointed to learn as the book progressed that this was hardly any "tale of survival" ... Hillary and his crew 24/7 radio contact and could call in to be rescued at any time. Which, in the end, they did.
And then there's the endless memory replay Hillary dishes out for his "contribution" to the book ... the bulk of it so boring it could peel the paint off the walls. Did he really think we'd be interested in all those mundane and trite details of his life as a Hillary -- just becuase he was "a Hillary." Please.
The real tale of survival is the "ghost writer" who got suckered into co-writing this piece of schlock with Hillary. Someone should write a book about that.
That said, this book does serve some readerly purpose. Go ahead and order a copy. Read it first -- and then read the books I cited at the beginning of my review. Then they will really, really blow you away.
Peter's Ghosts.......2005-03-29
Peter Hillary with two companions tried to replicate Robert Scott's journey to the South Pole and back, manhauling (pulling by themselves) hundreds of pounds of equipment on sleds. They almost succeeded in matching not only Scott's route but Scott's tragedy - they barely made it to the Pole and had to be airlifted out.
Hillary and co-writer John Elder's non-traditional approach to the story is much more interesting than a straightforward narrative of an incomplete mission. The book is told in two distinct voices: Elder provides the basic narrative, while Hillary (set apart in boldface from the main story) tells the story of what was going on in his head as he pulled pulled pulled toward the Pole.
Sick and isolated, Hillary is surrounded by the ghostly memory of his family (Sir Edmund Hillary, the first to climb Everest; Peter's mother and sister lost in a Nepalese plane crash)and many friends from the climbing world, the majority of whom died while mountaineering.
These ghosts, or at least the memory of them, are as real to the reader as they seemed to the hallucinating Hillary. The two-voices 'device,' which might have seemed artificial, adds to the powerful emotional impact of Hillary's memories. It is a ghostly book, indeed. One of my favorite reads so far this year!
I will never complain about being cold again!.......2004-12-29
For those of you who gave it one star, all I can say is: your little minds just didn't get it, or you really didn't read the entire book.
This is a powerful, heart-and-gut wrenching account of one of the most harrowing experiences of a man's life in the most hostile of all environments. Imagining the body and mind destruction as they trekked along the frigid, almost unnavigable routes in Antartica is unimaginable!
If you want to read a book that reads more like fiction because you can't believe anyone in their right mind would endure this Antarctica madness, then this is the book for you.
Howling in the face of of the abyss.......2004-05-24
Man oh man. Two journeys -- one a lonely haul to the South Pole, the other a haunting visitation to the past, as ghosts rise up to keep Hillary company. It's a thrilling concept, made more exciting that this is how the brain works under the pressures of social isolation and sensual deprivation. The son of Sir Edmund has certainly spilt his guts here. But the writing is so poetic and evocative much of what could have sunk this book is transcended. Nowhere have I read a better exploration of the interior life -- the mind -- of an adventuring man, or of any man for that matter. Hillary's partner Elder is obviouskly the genius here, not to take anything away from Hillary who has become a surprisingly more forthright writer than he was in his youth -- but it's Elder who has clearly taken the reigns here and through using two voices -- his and Hillary's -- has crafted a masterpiece of form and revelation. Certainly blows the mystique.
Book Description
The Kodansha Kanji Learner's Dictionary answers the urgent need for an easy-to-use kanji dictionary compact enough to be easily carried around, yet detailed enough to satisfy the practical needs of the beginning and intermediate learner.
Its basic goal is to give the learner a thorough understanding of kanji by providing instant access to a wealth of useful information on the meanings, readings, and compounds. Normally, the learner must memorize numerous compounds as unrelated units. A unique feature of this dictionary that
overcomes this difficulty is the core meaning, a concise keyword that defines the dominant sense of each character, followed by detailed character meanings and numerous compounds that clearly show how thousands of building blocks are combined to form countless compound words.
Another unique feature is the System of Kanji Indexing by Patterns (SKIP), an indexing system that enables the user to locate characters as quickly and as accurately as in alphabetical dictionaries.
Modern linguistic theory has been effectively integrated with sophisticated information technology to produce the most useful kanji learner's dictionary ever compiled. For the first time, learners have at their fingertips a wealth of information that is linguistically accurate, easy to use, and
carefully adapted to their practical needs.
FEATURES
o 2,230 entry characters, including all the kanji in the Joyo and Jinmei Kanji lists
o 41,000 senses for 31,300 words and word elements show how each character contributes to the meanings of compounds
o 1,200 homophones with core meanings explain differences between closely related characters
o 386 variant forms used in prewar literature and in names
o 1,945 stroke order diagrams show you how to write each kanji stroke by stroke
o 7,200 character readings, including name readings
o Over 2,000 cross-references and five appendixes give instant access to a mass of useful reference data

LOVE IT!!.......2007-06-24
I have several kanji dictionaries and so far this book is the best. Highly recommended!!
kanji lovers paradise.......2007-05-13
the book arrived quickly and safely. and my boyfriend, who i ordered it for, has all but devoured it already. :) thank you so so very much. :)
The best kanji dictionary for beginners!.......2007-03-14
Amazingly easy and quick to use. This dictionary uses a unique SKIP system which works by dividing an unknown character in parts and then counting the strokes for each. It takes some practice at first but once you start to get a hang of how kanji are written it newer fails. Besides single kanji characters the dictionary also contains a nice collection of some of the most common kanji combinations. Just brilliant!
The SKIP Method.......2007-01-20
You can locate Kanji characters by one of the following routes: 1)by frequency, 2) by pronunciation, 3) by radical, and 4) by pattern. The frequency table gives you a list of frequently used characters. If you know the pronunciation of the character, you can find it in the pronunciation table. The entries in this table are in Romaji (pronunciation in English letters). If you know the radical of the character, you can find it by referring to the radical table. However, the radical index is not very convenient. So, if you prefer the radical method, you should look elsewhere. The pattern method is the essence of this dictionary, which is known as SKIP. According to the SKIP method, each character can be divided into either left-right portion, a top-bottom portion, center, or miscellaneous. For example, if you know the number of strokes of the left side of the character, and the number of strokes of the right side, you go to the right-left section, then to the number of strokes of the left side, and then to the number of strokes of the right side. A downside of this dictionary is that it lists the pronunciation of each character in Romaji (English letters), and not in the genuine Hiragana or Katakana. Other than that it gives you a lot of options to locate Kanji characters, which saves a lot of time.
A wonderful character dictionary for Japanese students........2007-01-20
This book has made looking up Japanese kanji something that I no longer dread. While some of the more traditional methods of stroke-counting and radical lookup *should* be learned, using the SKIP method in this book is a breeze. Kanji can sometimes be difficult to get the exact number of strokes perfect, which can leave you lost many pages away from where you need to be in other dictionaries. The same goes for looking up by radical. Sometimes the radicals are so deformed/stretched/squashed, that they are hard to determine which is which accurately. The SKIP method in this book attempts to get around all these difficulties.
It groups the kanji into 4 main "types", based on how they are drawn. These types are Left-Right, Top-Bottom, Enclosed, and other. Then you count the strokes in the first part, count the strokes in the second part, and end up with a number. A simple example is the kanji for the numeral 2. It looks pretty much like an equals sign in math ( or = if you can't see the Japanese character). This is clearly seperated into 2 parts, a "top" and a "bottom" part. That is the second "type" in the SKIP system. It has one stroke in the top section, and one in the bottom section. The SKIP number would thusly be 2-1-1 (2 for the type, 1 for the strokes in the top, 1 for the strokes in the bottom). If you open the book to second section, and go to 1-1 page, and you'll find the kanji almost immediately.
While this book does not have a very exhaustive list of compounds, it *does* list a vast majority of the compounds you'll actually see on a day to day basis. The SKIP system is fast and easy to use, and if you want a kanji-lookup dictionary that you can actually carry with you without destroying your shoulders and lower back, this is a great choice. Bear in mind though, it is *just* a kanji-lookup dictionary. If you need to translate English words into Japanese this book will be of very little help. I'd suggest one of Kodansha's Furigana Japanese Dictionary options.

We LOVE Maisy!.......2006-12-21
I can understand the frustration of the other reviewer, but this book is really cute! Don't fault Maisy and Lucy Cousins for Amazon's mistake. We have over 30 Maisy books and I would give every one of them a 5 star review.
Really Disappointed.......2006-07-01
I ordered this book from Amazon but when I received it, found that all the stickers had already been removed from the page and stuck all over the book. By the time I discovered this, I had already thrown out my receipt or else I would have returned it. Obviously Amazon sent me a used book that had been returned by another customer. My daughter was very disappointed that the stickers had already been used.
