Book Description
How to restructure traditional assembly production into a one-piece flow operation based on the demands of the marketplace -- not the planning department.
Customer Reviews:
A start on one piece flow production cells.......2006-01-23
Book info : I read the 1st English edition that was published in 1992.
Pre required knowledge: SMED
Purchased price : USD 39,90
General : The book is not very easy to read, the information you need is there but the text could be much clearer. Also the writer must like abbreviations, because he uses them a lot. In the end they were starting to get annoying.
Book content:
The book has got 2 parts. Part I handles the basic theoretical part (44% of book) and has got exercises (12%) The first part gives an unclear overview of the theory and then continues using the theory in case studies. Part II (44%) gives 4 applications:
1 Colour Changeover Improvement at a plastics company
2. Establishing one-piece flow at the oriental motor company
3. Single delivery at Mynac clothing company
4. Reducing waste on printed circuit board component assembly lines at Kumamoto Electronics
Because I work in the food processing industry I found the case studies and the applications in part two difficult to understand.
Two other things I would like to point out are:
A. If you maintain the same level of production but decrease the lot size you get more setup time / changeover. Therefore the book can't avoid SMED en Zero changeover principles; actually quit a lot of the book is spend on this topic but I found Shingo's book on this topic much better.
B. While transforming the production process into U cells the writer adds new equipment to the lines / cells, sometimes up to twice as much, as if equipment is falling out of the sky!
Very good book on one piece flow and mfg. cell layout.......2003-10-12
This book contains a great deal of very useful information on creating, or revising, manufacturing cells to reduce waste and improve productivity. The book contains a cogent explanation of the advantages of replacing batch processing with one piece flow processes. It is particularly good at describing how to improve production floor layouts to reduce the number of workers needed to manufacture products while introducing one piece flow. The information is there, but the text could be much clearer. A valuable addition to Shigeo Shingo's books on manufacturing.
One Piece Flow Cell Design.......2000-05-28
This book does an excellent job of explaining how lean or Toyota Production System (TPS) cells are designed. It covers all of the principles and has many examples. If you are designing work cells or need to understand their design, this is a book you should read and keep handy.

This digital document is a journal article from Analytica Chimica Acta, published by Elsevier in 2007. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.
Description:
Two vibrational spectroscopy procedures have been developed and compared for the direct and simultaneous determination of piperonyl butoxide and tetramethrin, the active ingredients of alcoholic capillary lotions, for hair pediculosis diseases. Nine lotions, purchased from the Spanish market, were analyzed using both, attenuated total reflectance (ATR) and transmission FT-IR measurements, and based on the use of partial least squares (PLS) multivariate calibration. A reduced set of 15 matched standards (11 for calibration and 4 for validation) was employed using both measurement modes. The spectral wave number ranges between 1757 and 1712cm^-^1 was selected to determine tetramethrin by both, transmittance and reflectance measurements. For the analysis of piperonyl butoxide the 1513-1479cm^-^1 and 1576-1479cm^-^1 regions were selected for ATR and transmission measurements, respectively. Results found for commercial samples compared well with those obtained by a liquid chromatography reference method that evidenced the applicability of the proposed strategy for the analysis of commercial formulations.
Book Description
This essential textbook is designed for students or researchers in biology who need to design experiments, sampling programs, or analyze resulting data. The text begins with a revision of estimation and hypothesis testing methods, before advancing to the analysis of linear and generalized linear models. The chapters include such topics as linear and logistic regression, simple and complex ANOVA models, log-linear models, and multivariate techniques. The main analyses are illustrated with many examples from published papers and an extensive reference list to both the statistical and biological literature is also included. The book is supported by a web-site that provides all data sets, questions for each chapter and links to software.
Download Description
An essential textbook for any student or researcher in biology needing to design experiments, sampling programs or analyse the resulting data. The text begins with a revision of estimation and hypothesis testing methods, covering both classical and Bayesian philosophies, before advancing to the analysis of linear and generalized linear models. Topics covered include linear and logistic regression, simple and complex ANOVA models (for factorial, nested, block, split-plot and repeated measures and covariance designs), and log-linear models. Multivariate techniques, including classification and ordination, are then introduced. Special emphasis is placed on checking assumptions, exploratory data analysis and presentation of results. The main analyses are illustrated with many examples from published papers and there is an extensive reference list to both the statistical and biological literature. The book is supported by a web-site that provides all data sets, questions for each chapter and links to software.
Customer Reviews:
Designing your field studies.......2007-02-20
The book is riddled with different examples from articles of recent and past publications which have both good and bad experimental designs. The authors tried to explain the basic underlying designs of these published field studies and then they tried to give suggestions of how it would have been to be without underestimating the cost and labor done by the published authors. Most of the examples come from field community ecology, and I think this book is highly recommended for aspiring field ecologist as the numerous examples cited can guide you to design against what is superficial, unprepared field experiments. Not to limit the book, this works also even for other fields in biology such as laboratory studies. The principles being taught can be applied in both.
Experimental Design and Data Analysis for Biologists.......2006-11-03
Well explained statistical theory and applications for the biologist.
Comprehensive, advanced, and often a good read.......2005-09-14
Comprehensible, comprehensive, and interesting statistical texts are as rare as the Tasmanian Tiger. This text is very comprehensive and is loaded with interesting examples and does an excellent job of presenting the scientific method. It's not always as easy to follow as I would like, but I deal with this by recommending to my students that they read the assignment after, instead of before the lecture. I cover the first 12 chapters (through covariance) in my upper division Biometry course. I'm an ecologist and have enjoyed learning much that was never covered in my undergraduate biometry and two graduate statistics courses. This would be an excellent text for graduate courses.

Vince Lombardi's views on life and leadership--inspiring and motivational--placed in A-Z format for the first time
Legendary football coach Vince Lombardi left the national spotlight more than three decades ago, but his fiery words continue to resonate in today's hard-charging business arena. The Essential Vince Lombardi compiles Lombardi's most memorable quotes and phrases, alphabetically by topic, for use in speeches, memos, and documents--or just for fingertip inspiration and insight.
More than just a simple quote book, however, The Essential Vince Lombardi contains interviews from family members and associates, rare photographs, "Lombardi Lessons" for applying Lombardi's wisdom to everyday situations, and more. It places the leadership wisdom of Vince Lombardi in the context of today and is a valuable reference for businesspeople and Lombardi aficionados alike.
Customer Reviews:
Not the same Vince Lombardi.......2007-01-09
This is not the coach, someone with the same name, followed by "Jr.". Its about him, and uses his writings, but isn't authored by him. A little disappointing.
Need Motivation! look Here.......2003-04-11
The book, The Essential Lombardi is half a biography, and half quotes and speeches. The book was written by Vince Lombardi Jr. Vince Lombardi is a famous football coach, who coached the Green Bay Packers and led them to the first Super bowl. This book was a very good book, and I found it especially good, because in my eyes he is the best, ever! The book is very inspirational. Vince was all about pushing his players to go farther. He is recognized by so many. As a matter of fact, my whole football team knew who he was. This book is very good; I'd recommend it to anyone in sports. I give it 4 stars.

Praise for A Word a Day
"AWADies will be familiar with Anu Garg's refreshing approach to words: words are fun and they have fascinating histories. The people who use them have curious stories to tell too, and this collection incorporates some of the correspondence received by the editors at the AWAD site, from advice on how to outsmart your opponent in a duel (or even a truel) to a cluster of your favorite mondegreens."
-John Simpson, Chief Editor, Oxford English Dictionary
"A banquet of words! Feast and be nourished!"
-Richard Lederer, author of The Miracle of Language
Written by the founder of the wildly popular A Word A Day Web site (www.wordsmith.org), this collection of unusual, obscure, and exotic English words will delight writers, scholars, crossword puzzlers, and word buffs of every ilk. The words are grouped in intriguing categories that range from "Portmanteaux" to "Words That Make the Spell-Checker Ineffective." each entry includes a concise definition, etymology, and usage example-and many feature fascinating and hilarious commentaries by A Word A Day subscribers and the authors.

The joy, magic and music of words .........2007-08-22
For those of us who love words, this book is a wonderful addition to any collection of books about language. The book is not primarily a vocabulary builder (although it can be), it is more a celebration of the interesting, the obscure and the unusual.
I bought this book back in 2004 after discovering the word a day website. I may never use most of thee words in my everyday speech or writing, but I feel enriched by making their acquaintance. I must treat myself to the second book soon.

A fresh approach to words and language.......2006-01-18
Have always loved the AWAD web site and Garg's fresh approach to language. How nice to have a book in one's hand to peruse at leisure. Garg's introductions to each chapter personalize and make the somewhat arcane words come to life.
Verbivores, unite, consolidate, aggregate..........2005-12-30
Anu Garg writes a fun romp through the riches of the English language. Did'ja know that English has about 100,000 words? And than the NEXT wordiest language is German--and it has only about 20,000 (and they swipe English words shamelessly.)
If you want to gain more vocabulary and have fun doing it, I can't recommend this fine book enough. If you like the works of writers like Richard Lederer (Anguished English), you will really want a copy of this. Since I like words and I enjoy learning new ones, I was pleased to find that there were plenty of words here I had never seen before. Great fun for students, especially those training for SAT's. Recommended.
I think it's great!.......2005-10-27
I love the concept of a-word-a-day and this book supplements the daily e-mails because it lets me more easily go back to the words I need to access.
Fantastic Book !.......2003-12-16
Suscribers to the AWAD mailing lists should be more than familiar with the entertaining and refreshing style of Anu. I have combed through this entire book and I have personally found it entertaining and useful. Some of the words are those we may use in our everyday lives, but the author also included lots of rare and exotic words. I don't believe that the purpose of this book be test preparation, but if you're the type who just enjoys exploring the wonderful world of words or adding to your vocabulary, this is the book to get. If you;re a word buff (like me), then don't miss this. Overall a great book!

Customer Reviews:
Are you dasypygal?.......2006-09-01
Anu Garg has been sending out his A Word a Day mailings to his linguaphilic subscriber base--some half a million strong at this point--for more than a decade. Another Word a Day is the second book to spring from this enterprise. (His A Word a Day was published in 2002.) In it Garg follows the format of his subscription list. The book is divided into 52 thematic chapters: calendar-related words (bissextile), words that are apparent misspellings of other words (monestrous), words about words (hyperbole), and so on. Garg discusses five words per chapter, providing for each its pronunciation, syntax, etymology, definition, and an example, usually culled from some modern source, of the word in print. (For example, for the word cruciverbalist Garg uses a passage from Booklist discussing Parnell Hall's series of crossword mysteries.) A quote from some famous person appears at the bottom of most pages of the book--though these quotes aren't relevant to the words under discussion in the text. Each chapter also includes a number of responses from readers of Garg's mailings. These are set off in boxes, which serves to break up what would otherwise be a monotonous layout. They are also sometimes rather interesting--for example, the seventeen different explanations Garg's readers offered for the origin of the term eighty-six as a verb meaning "to throw out." And a Seattle reader draws a nice parallel between hapax legomena (words with only one recorded use) and Googlewhacking:
Hapax Legooglemenon
"A recent variant on finding singularity in a large corpus, namely the sport, pastime, and occasional obsession of Googlewhacking. You challenge the awesome indexing capabilities of Google.com to find that elusive query (two words--no quotation marks) with a single, solitary result!"
-- Mike Pope, Seattle, Washington
You'll be happy to become acquainted with some of the words and etymologies in Garg's corpus--dasypygal means "having hairy buttocks"; "helpmeet" comes from an erroneous interpretation of a Biblical passage. Some of the entries are less compelling. I most enjoyed the more conversational parts of the book, the reader responses already mentioned and the brief discussions with which Garg introduces each chapter. I would have enjoyed the book as a whole more if the entries included lengthier discussions--more on a word's history in popular culture, perhaps, memorable anecdotes attached to the words, however tangentially--but I realize that that is not the format Garg follows in his mailings.
Linguaphiles will enjoy Another Word a Day, but reading it straight through is not recommended except to the most voracious verbivore: this is more of a book you'll want to nibble on from time to time.
Debra Hamel [...]
Learn More Than You Expect, Less Than You Could.......2006-07-06
"Another Word A Day: An All-New Romp through Some of the Most Unusual and Intriguing Words in English" has 18 words in its title. None of them are as amazing as the ones listed inside.
Author Anu Garg may have memorized that most wonderful dictionary of dictionaries, the Oxford English Dictionary. However, the OED is a massive collection of books that requires a magnifying glass and an entire wall in a home office to store it. Garg's book is far less intimidating to the verbal neophyte, and easier to toss into a backpack.
Each day, you could read a new word to add to your mighty vocabularic coffers, ready to swing out in conversation. Garg designed this thing topically, with each chapter representing a week, with five words per chapter. Garg, like myself, believes that even great minds need to take the weekend off.
He provides some background for each word, with some popular culture references. This helps see it all in context.
What kinds of things will you learn? Besides a few French and Arabic words that found their way into English, you have some 50 other topics, from "What's in a Name?" to "What does that Company Name Mean?" No, Enron is not listed with a corresponding definition, but lucent, cingular, prudential, suppurate and vanguard are defined.
The words are far more user-friendly than to be considered "most unusual" as described in the title. Most of these are words with some degree of common usage. Well-read people will have seen most of them before, although there were a few I thought might only be used in Scrabble (cadogan, imprest, assize, ambsace). This might be only indicative of my shortfalls.
Where the book misses its mark is that there is no enough meat for each word. While the brevity of definitions the words keeps the reader from confusion, it would be nice to have more quotes using the word. If I would read a word a day, I would like to have read enough, with correlating quotes and history, to use the word adeptly.
Overall, I enjoyed "Another Word A Day." It reads easily; I read more than a word a day, and finished the book in one morning. Expect to smile at a few unexpected definitions, learn a few words, and know more about words we use daily.
I fully recommend "Another Word A Day" by Anu Garg.

Provides nutriment in spades for those interested in words.......2006-05-19
In "Another Word a Day" (is anyone else irritated that we cannot use italics for titles on reviews here?) Anu Garg devotes 52 specialized chapters to sets of five words each. He focuses on a common theme for each chapter, such as Numeric Terms, Fishy Words, or Words about Books and Writing (and having deployed the quotations for the book title, I must leave the chapter titles unadorned).
I received a copy of this book back in the winter and promptly lost it when it slid behind a rather ugsome desk I was in the process of tidying. Now that I have ousted the book, I am enjoying it. More to the point, I'm learning a great deal about a diverse, interesting collection of words. Mr. Garg succeeds in large measure by making the process entertaining. I suspect that the most ardent agelast would at least chuckle to himself at some point and that even erudite readers will run across words they had either forgotten about or hitherto not encountered.
Mr. Garg offers definitions parsed out by parts of speech, delves into a bit of etymology without lapsing into morbidly detailed fact-finding, and includes examples of how each word has been used in the current lexicon. He augments the text with an abundance of quotes and pithy sidebars.
In short, a book that provides nutriment in spades for those folks, myself included, who are interested in words and their usage and history.
17 stories about 86 and a whole lot more.......2006-01-01
"Another Word A Day" is even more enjoyable than author Garg's first book (Word a Day.) This continuing romp through the riches of English includes 17 stories about how the restaurant term "86" came about. Most of the stories are ridiculous, but one seems to ring true to me (the source being a teletype code used by journalists.)
The section on the word "alembic" is fascinating, with a tale about distilling cider in rural Brittany.
There is so much more in "Another Word a Day." I recommend this for families. Reading a page of this (with suitable bowdlerization done by Mummy or Daddy) would make a great dinner table ritual. My dad gave us science stories over the dinner table and they were memorable. This book can serve as family entertainment or just as a relaxing book to pick up and wander through. Recommended.
Enhancing Your Enjoyment of English.......2005-11-16
_Another Word a Day: An All-New Romp through Some of the Most Intriguing Words in English_ is a linguaphile's delight! Written by Anu Garg, author of _A Word a Day_ (the newsletter and the book), _Another Word a Day_ "celebrates the English language in all its quirkiness, grandeur, fun, and delight."
Although the reader is likely to encounter some unfamiliar words in this collection (nyctalopia, dasypygal, and zugzwang, for example), all of the words are in use, and most are illustrated by examples from current sources.
_Another Word a Day_ is organized into 52 chapters, each with a theme (for a few chapters the reader is invited to discover the theme). Examples of chapters are "Words Formed Erroneously," "Words about Words," and "Numeric Terms." Each chapter includes five entry words, and each entry includes pronunciation, plural (if applicable), part of speech, definition, etymology, and use in context from a published source.
Nearly every chapter includes reader feedback, presumably collected from Garg's online community -- some 600,000 strong. For example, seventeen theories of the origin of the term "eighty-six" are presented, even though no one theory can be proven.
Several chapters offer puzzles or quizzes (answers are provided at the end of the book), and an index of entry words is helpful. Pithy quotations appear at the bottom of most pages -- a bit of lagniappe for the reader.
Sometimes a person with a fresh perspective can help us appreciate things around us that we take for granted. Such is the case with Anu Garg, who was born and raised in the state of Uttar Pradesh, in India, and did not begin to learn English until he was in the sixth grade. Garg's fascination with words and his mastery of English are apparent, however. With clarity and conciseness he leads us on mini-explorations of our language. The enthusiasm of this most worthy "tour guide" is contagious.

Five Sweet Treats...and what that means.......2007-07-25
As mentioned in other reviews; this set of books is nicely smallish (5 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches), and beautifully drawn, and the 5 stories are lovely. What no one has yet bothered to mention is the answer to "What do you get?" in this smallish, prettily drawn and nicely written set?
You get 5 small, hard cover books in a nice, slick board box;
Lilly's Chocolate Heart, Owen's Marshmellow Chick, Wemberly's Ice-Cream Star, Julius's Candy Corn and Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick.
Each short story involves a 'treat'; an Easter Marshmellow Chick, some Halloween Candy Corn, a Forth of July ice cream, etc, that barely mention the holiday to which they owe their existance. For example, although Owen does get an "Easter basket", there is no mention of Christmas in Sheila Rae's Peppermint Stick and no mention of why a red, white and blue star-shaped ice-cream would be Wemberly's special treat "on a hot day".
All of which is fine with me, I thoroughly enjoy reading these with my 3 1/2 and 4 1/2 year old kids, even our 18 month old seems to enjoy these stories, but I feel if we were not a Christmas-and-Easter-celebrating household, this set would have been a bit of a bummer. So, consider yourself warned. :)
just a little too sweet.......2007-07-22
first, these are great little stories. kevin henkes is a fabulous author. my only issue is that i would have liked to have known ahead of time that all the stories were about sugary sweets and the characters hording their sweets in some way. it's turned out to be fine - my daughter still loves the stories. i just would have liked a heads' up.
Big Help.......2007-04-11
This is a great set for anyone teaching the Lucy Calkins Units of Study for Primary Grades!
Cute and Clever.......2007-03-31
I am a big fan of all of Kevin Henkes' children's books. This little book set is bright and colorful and looks good enough to eat!
They are a good introduction to the rest of his stories. Not only are these written with little ones in mind, they are smartly written. I enjoy them as much as my son! Henkes really knows how to capture the innocence and whimsy of children everywhere.
one of my toddlers all time favorite gifts.......2007-03-08
My 2 1/2 year old adores these books. She brings them to me to read to her several times throughout the day and night, never seeming to tire of them, She has had them for about 6 months so this is no passing fancy.
In the large size, any one of these books would cost what you can get five of them in this box set. Actually, this size is much better for little hands and I think adds to the fun. I am keeping it in mind as an ideal gift to give other children in the future. My daughter has learned many words from the books, just because she enjoys repeating them after me. Her favorite is "Delicious!" from Julius's Candycorn. This is definitely a good buy.
