Book Description
You have probably been taught to use your logic and reasoning to make the best decisions. Although this is certainly sensible advice, the future is unpredictable, and uncertainty can never be eliminated from the decision-making process. The key is to be positive about uncertainty, that is approaching every decision with an open mind to create more future possibilities, even while assuming that change is inevitable. Creative Decision Making helps you do just that by presenting four paradoxical principles designed to expand the way you think about the decisions you make. The revised edition includes discussion on using positive uncertainty to manage information overload and what you can do to decide creatively in today's more rapidly changing world.

Decision Making Made Easier.......2004-06-21
As a career coach working in an internal career development center of a large corporation, I deal with a diverse cross section of the employee population. A common thread, however, seems to be uncertainty about career goals, ranging from questions regarding skill development to more complex issues on structuring a radical career change. Of the many resources I utilize, Creative Decision Making Using Positive Uncertainty stands out as one of the most helpful in clarifying issues and illuminating options. Without exception, everyone who has used the creative processes in this book has praised its effectiveness in facilitating decision making and changing the fear of risk into the pursuit of opportunity. It is a welcome and valuable addition to our career center library.
Positive Uncertainty Opens Doors to New Opportunities.......2004-06-20
Several years ago, I was laid off from my job and very perplexed about what direction to take. Someone suggested I read Creative Decision Making Using Positive Uncertainty, an extremely thought provoking book which proved to be a guiding framework that helped me make some critical career decisions. While I initially felt handicapped by the uncertainty in my life, the realistic anecdotes and open ended questions reframed the uncertainty into active anticipation. They prompted me to focus on the many positive outcomes and opportunities the future might hold and to envision new career choices with the glass half full instead of half empty. With this broadened perspective, I ended up finding a job that I had never even imagined possible.
This rationale and intuitive approach to decision making has been an enormously supportive resource on several occasions. Most recently, I recommended the book to my husband while he contemplates a significant career shift in a time of major life change with a new baby in our family. As we both analyze the impact a job change will have on our personal lives, we are using Positive Uncertainty to help identify options, assess risks and ultimately, make the best decision.
Making difficult decisions during times of change.......2004-06-18
I am nearing the end of a major life transition. During this time I have used the principles of positive uncertainty to guide my thoughts, plans, and reactions to change. My life changes involved my significant other's transition from medical school to residency, the uncertainty of where we would be living, my job situation (as our main provider), and what the new schedule of resident life would mean for my husband and me. I utilized the four parts of knowledge to help de-mystify this new phase. Instead of worrying about what might "happen" to us, I was able to determine our desirable outcomes and proactively approach the time with a realistic understanding of the future. Creative Decision Making Using Positive Uncertainty has also reminded me that I am in control of my own reality and by thinking through the unknown in a planful manner, I can determine my own behaviors and attitude as I walk into times of change.

Penetrating perspectives on a bizarre world.......2003-02-17
I read Gary's book when it first came out and LOVED it.
For me, the most telling insights were these:
In America, the prevailing axiom is "The squeaky wheel gets the grease". In Japan, it's "The nail that sticks out gets hammered".
Both are forms of emotional blackmail, but one is more intimidating than the other. The truth is, both societies are extremely conformist, but diametrically opposed in the way they achieve conformity.
I also found the incident after his arrival quite telling -- the one where the cab driver requests a map for his destination, despite Gary insisting that the address should be enough until, finally, the Japanese cabbie explains, wearily, that Gary doesn't understand... "Number one house in street is first house built."
So tradition triumphs over logic in a society that seems to defy logic at every turn.
If it does nothing else, it should prepare visitors to Japan to expect the unexpected, and to set aside their notions of how society "should" operate.
An great and insightful book.......2001-09-27
I read this book several years ago. It's a wonderfully entertaining read. And while it's not a primer for Japanese culture per se, it shows in great detail the culture shock one man goes through. It just shows how alien another culture can be from someone outside of it. The part that still stands out in my mind today is the English Club at work where they insisted the writer didn't know how to properly speak english as they used some pidgin form of english and japanese!
Very entertaining. Anyone who is interested in japan or their culture should pick this up and read for it's entertainment value.
Hilarious! Insightful!.......1999-10-13
I read this book several years ago, and could hardly put it down. Everyone I've shared it with felt the same way.
Humourous, but lacking reality neither then nor now.......1999-05-17
Having lived in Japan for several years, I found this book to be a sad assault on Japanese culture. It is definitely humourous somewhat like the movie Mr. Baseball, and certain parts did definitely happen to other foreigners in the 1980s, but overall this should not by any means serve as an introduction to Japan and its' culture.
Accurate, insightful and humerous........1997-12-05
Having lived and worked in Japan, for a Japanese company, I can attest to the accuracy of this book. The author's observations regarding business and social life are as current today as when the book was written.
I highly recommend this book as a humerous, yet essential guide to living
in Tokyo.

Book Description
Occupancy Estimation and Modeling is the first book to examine the latest methods in analyzing presence/absence data surveys. Using four classes of models (single-species, single-season; single-species, multiple season; multiple-species, single-season; and multiple-species, multiple-season), the authors discuss the practical sampling situation, present a likelihood-based model enabling direct estimation of the occupancy-related parameters while allowing for imperfect detectability, and make recommendations for designing studies using these models.
* Provides authoritative insights into the latest in estimation modeling
* Discusses multiple models which lay the groundwork for future study designs
* Addresses critical issues of imperfect detectibility and its effects on estimation
* Explores the role of probability in estimating in detail
Customer Reviews:
Great book for understanding site occupancy modeling.......2006-03-10
I think this is a pretty good book. It is the only reference on this relatively new type of patch occupancy modeling. It is mainly focused on the models of MacKenzie et al. and the Royle and Nichols model. This is a great place to start if you know nothing about this method or a good reference for advanced users.
This book does not fill the need of an introductory "how-to" book. If you want to know how to set up models and run them in program PRESENCE or MARK you will need to wait. Such a book does not exist. This is not a cookbook, but a compilation of the theory and an explanantion of the methodology behind occupancy estimation.
Book Description
This new addition to the prestigious Convergence Series is an absorbing study focusing on the dilemma of science and technology in today's world. Bentley Glass, a renowned biologist, warns that for the first time scientists and science policies will be held directly responsible for the survival of the world. In this volume he formulates ethical guidelines for governing the future of scientific research. He addresses and offers solutions to the specific problems of inadequate science education, overpopulation, the transfer of scientific technology to developing countries, and the biological consequences of nuclear war.

There's a reason that Sports Illustrated's Gary Smith was named by a national poll of sports editors as the writer they'd most like to hire. He sees the game, but as the title of this marvelous collection of his work from the magazine implies, he also sees beyond. "Sports comes to us in boxes," Smith explains in his preface, "the perimeters of our TV screens or the boundary lines of fields and courts. As much as I enjoy what goes on inside the boxes, I've always had the urge to bust out of them." Does he ever. What's so remarkable about the 15 pieces that comprise Beyond the Game is how much human drama--and humanity--he reveals without resorting to fanfares and violins to enhance his soundtrack.
Final scores are less important to Smith than personal journeys. He doesn't write game stories; he writes stories about compelling people who happen to play our games, some famous--like Ali, Magic Johnson, Mike Tyson, Jim Valvano, and a series of world-record holders in the mile--some hardly footnotes, like John Malangone, the "Damned Yankee" in the title of the volume's leadoff piece. Malangone's saga is unforgettable. Once a sure-fire bet to replace Yogi Berra behind home plate, he carried enormous expectations, which seemed to crush him. But it wasn't the expectations that derailed him; it was a childhood memory he couldn't shake, "the whip," writes Smith, "he has used to flog himself for 60 years." With great understanding, Smith explores the horror encased in the memory, how carrying it corroded Malangone's potential, and how, ultimately, Malangone confronted his psychological baggage and, in his 60s, rediscovered his passion for the game he once walked away from. It is a tour de force of writing and reporting, set within the game but expanding well beyond it. But then every piece in this exceptional collection manages to do the same. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Gary Smith is one of the most accomplished sports journalists working today, a three-time National Magazine Award winner who has been selected in a poll of Associated Press editors as the sportswriter they'd most like to hire. In Beyond the Game, Gary Smith has brought together his greatest stories, from the inspiring account of basketball coach Jim Valvano's courageous battle against cancer, to an unforgettable tale of a remote valley in Bolivia that plays host to an unusual annual ritual in which the men of rival villages engage in a riotous all-day fistfight. Beyond the Game is not only a collection of great sportswriting; it is a collection of great writing, period. Each of Smith's stories -- of dreams and fears, failure and triumph, self-destruction and salvation -- will profoundly touch you and remain with you long after you have closed the pages of the book.
Customer Reviews:
Simply the best.......2003-08-27
I recently received this book as a gift, after having raved for years about the quality of Mr. Smiths writing. Sports happens to be the world in which these stories are set, but he writes about what it is to be human. His compassion and understanding of his subject is so complete that I feel as if I know these people better than most of my friends. His ability to indicate the unspoken thoughts and feelings of his subjects leads the reader to a deeper understanding of humanity, triumphs and failures both.
My only disapointment, as pointed out by an earlier reviewer, is that the collection is not long enough.
I recently re-read a story he wrote for Sports Illustrated back in march of 2001, about a black man who became the basketball coach for a high school in a small Amish community and how he affected the entire town.
I challenge anyone to read this article without feeling uplifted.
A must read for anyone who enjoys great writing.
The Best Sportswriter of the Past 20 Years.......2001-11-06
Gary Smith is a great writer who happens to write about sports. My only complaint: I wish the collection was twice as long as it is. Whether or not you're a sports fan, you should read this book to get a feel for what a master prose stylist can accomplish. Terrific reading.
Truly Beyond the Game.......2001-05-10
Gary Smith, a veteran of the sports writing game has brilliantly pieced together this collection of past articles that have made him the most popular sportswriter in the business. A gift to Sports Illustrated Magazine, Smith goes beyond the game to capture the truth in situations the reader never knew about sports legends as well as sports tragic failures. Smith writes about John Malangone a.k.a. the "Damned Yankee," who was foreseen to be the next Yogi Berra. Malangone's story shows Smith's ability to add emotion to his writing, especially in this first instalment to this collection. Muhammad Ali's story is a great one but in Smith's book, he looks at the lives up the people around the public life of Ali. The lives of Ali's entourage according to Smith had it's ups and downs through Ali's struggles and triumphant moments. Perhaps the most fascinating piece in Smith's book is his view of the young Mike Tyson growing up in Brooklyn. From Tyson's ill-temper, and petty theft to his encounter with the great Cus D'Amato, Smith shows the reader what made Tyson a raw and gritty character in the boxing world today. Smith's magnificent collection of sports writing takes the average sports fan to a new level as he truly takes the reader beyond the game.
Great Book and a Great Guy.......2001-03-08
i'm thrilled to see gary smith's work in a nice collection like this one. in an age of writing catered to us as if we have attention deficit disorder, it's refreshing to have such illuminating work readily available. in college a few years back i was working on a very touchy feature about an athlete, so i called sports illustrated just hoping to consult with mr. smith to get a better understanding of entering intimate and personal boundaries. amazingly enough, he called me back the following day and we talked for about a half an hour. and for a young writer to speak with one of the greatest, i was deeply inspired. needless to say, the story ended up winning a feature award and i am very grateful to him. i hope he not only gets his writing out to more people now, but that he makes a nice buck off it too! the book is worth every cent!
Unique and brilliant.......2000-12-28
Read the first paragraph of any article in any sports magazine or newspaper and you'll know if Gary Smith wrote it or not. His work is brilliant and unique. Fans of his Sports Illustrated writing who have been waiting for years for a compilation will not be disappointed.
Book Description
Everyone is talking about signing with infants. Sign to Learn is the first complete introduction to appropriate sign language curriculum for young hearing preschoolers. In this unique resource, teachers will learn how to integrate American Sign Language (ASL) into their classrooms to enhance academic, social, and emotional development, as well as to introduce children respectfully to deaf culture. Appendixes include a thorough ASL illustration index, sample letters to families, and a resource list for further reading.
Customer Reviews:
excellent resource.......2006-07-03
This book is an easy to understand approach to incorporating ASL into hearing educational venues. Its step-by-step approach is backed up by the discussion of down to earth techniques that must be employed to reach the target audience - children and their families. I like that it borrows from another culture to establish a calm, controlled environment among those who most benefit from order, structure, and discipline - our children! And they include a healthy dollop of creativity! Thanks to Ms. Dennis and Ms. Azpiri for sharing their work with the general public! It is chock full of ideas to get you started.
Great for Parents, Too.......2006-06-07
I am not an early childhood educator, but I am the parent of a toddler who is rapidly maxing out my sign language abilities. This book is perfect for us.
Unlike many sign language dictionaries which are intended for adults, this book includes just the vocabulary you use with small children: colors, numbers, shapes, family members, weather, feelings, behavior, and more.
Though I mainly bought the book for the signs, the lesson plans also provide some fun ideas for games to play with your child.
I am giving it four stars because some of the sign pictures are not very easy to interpret. They do have good descriptions accompanying them, but you have to already know what the "S hand" looks like, for instance. If you have some basic ASL familiarity, you can figure them out, but it might be hard for very inexperienced signers to read.
Overall, though, I highly recommend this for parents who are signing with their children!

Customer Reviews:
Good book for beginners.......2007-01-25
If you are an excel or access user who does not make use just yet of pivot tables and charts, this book is for you. It explains at a very basic level how to use pivot tables. Why is a matter of what you do and your math and imagination abilities.
I recommend it for people who do not use them, because many people are still unfamiliar with the power of these tools and they truly are powerful and time savers.
Power users purchase this book expecting too much for their level, I believe, so stick to it if you don't even know what they are or do not use them at all for your data analysis.
Great for Beginners.......2006-09-21
If you just have a basic understanding of Excel, like I do, this is an excellent guide. Very understandable for non-technical types. Gives you step-by-step instructions. If you are an expert programmer, this book is probably not for you. I thought the screen shots and demo data was particularly helpful in understanding the basics of how to use Pivot tables. Of course, like anything else, you have to apply your own practical experience to it.
Pivot Tables for Dummies.......2005-12-20
Save yourself time and money. If you know the fundamentals of pivot tables and like to learn by playing your time would be best spent experimenting in excel. The book spends much of its space telling you things you should be able to deduce by looking at the excel menus.
poorly edited and untested, rough going.......2005-08-27
I was familiar with Excel, knew nothing about pivot tables ( a really great tool for analyzing data from spreadsheets), but with a new job where people do use pivot tables I wanted a book to teach me and to keep as a desk reference. This book was very rough going in the beginning, frustrating, and unclear. It wasn't until I got past chapter 3 things started to clear up, in fact chapter 3 should have been chapter 1 as it explains the basics. Furthermore the author has a tendency to switch database examples in mid lesson so that it is very confusing while trying to follow along learning an aspect of pivot tables. The book should have been edited better, someone unfamiliar with pivot tables should have tried to learn from it before the book was sent to press. There are mistakes in the examples that can make one think one has screwed up somehow (listed as ascending but is descending, columns missing or with different data, the wrong name of a chart type so that reader is creating a different chart from the one shown). It did come with downloads to use as examples and by the time I was through it I had learned pivot tables. It could have been better done. I did not bother with the programming section so I cannot speak to that.
Very Disappointing; Nothing New Here.......2005-05-11
As an intermediate user, I found nothing new here. I must agree with the other reviews here that state that this book seems rushed. There was not alot of time spent on each aspect of pivot tables, and the examples provide no new information that you can't find on the web. May be good for beginners, but again, just do Google search on pivot tables an you'll find the same info.
