Book Description
Rutger Hoekstra examines the complex relationship between the monetary economy and the materials flows that are extracted and emitted by economic activities. These physical flows are responsible for many important environmental problems such as unsustainable resource depletion, waste production and climate change. This book discusses, applies and improves upon techniques which link the monetary and physical economies for environmental analyses. The book uses two sources of analysis: the physical input-output table (PIOT), a macro-economic account for the physical economy, recording material and product flows, including resource extraction, emissions and recycling; and structural decomposition analysis (SDA), which assesses the influence of structural changes, such as economic growth, consumption shifts, export growth and technological change, on environmental indicators. Methodological improvements in the PIOT and SDA systems are then presented by the author, and applied to empirical data. Ecological and industrial economists, along with those with an interest in environmental problems associated with the economy will find this book, with its extensive historical analysis and novel fore- and back-casting models, to be a fascinating read.

Book Description
The tragic theme was no mere diversion for a fifth-century Athenian: it was a focal part of the experience of being a citizen. Tragedy explores fundamental issues of religion, of ethics, of civic ideology, and we should expect it to be a central source for the reconstruction and analysis of the Athenian thought-world. Yet is is also a peculiarly delicate source to use, and the combination of tragic with other material often poses particular problems to the historian. This collection of eleven papers investigates the methods and pitfalls of using tragedy to illuminate fifth-century thought, culture, and society. In the concluding essay Christopher Pelling summarizes two important themes of the book: the problems of using tragedy as evidence; and the light tragedy can shed on civic ideology.

Book Description
Internationally bestselling author and world-famous human behaviorist Desmond Morris turns his attention to the female form, taking the reader on a guided tour of the female body from head to toe. Highlighting the evolutionary functions of various physiological traits, Morris's study explores the various forms of enhancement and constraint that human societies have developed in the quest for the perfect female form. This is very much vintage Desmond Morris, delivered in his trademark voice: direct, clear, focused, and communicating what is often complex detail in simple language. In THE NAKED WOMAN, Desmond builds on his unrivalled experience as an observer of the human animal while tackling one of his most fascinating and challenging subjects to date.
Customer Reviews:
Our Humanity.......2007-09-06
As a person brainwashed by catholicism's negative thought on women and sex, this book was refreshing. It broadened my understanding of myself, of women and of humans as unique species.
Insightful and 'ah ha!' provoking.......2007-09-05
This book is a fascinating look at the origins of the numerous aspects the modern female physical state tends to mimic. Morris moves quite literally from head to toe explaining how attractiveness and beauty have come to be considered what they are today, and why it is that the modern female has been physically and psychologically shaped by her ancestral biology and by social trends to wish appear the way she does. A 'must read' for anyone interested in the idiosyncrasies of what makes the female to be considered attractive and/or those with a fascination of how biology shapes who and how we are in our day and age.
Fascinating look at the most fascinating creature.......2007-08-20
Do these questions interest you...
How did mouth kissing among humans begin?
How unique in nature are all those female facial expressions?
Are teeth different in men and women and if so, why?
Which part of a woman is highly erotic in the East, but much less so in the West?
What is the least erotic body part of a woman?
What is the origin of an audience clapping their hands in applause?
How many women have more than two breasts and how many might they have?
How and why do women have strong sexual signals on both sides of their body?
What is really behind constant changes in modern female clothing styles?
If so, this is the book for you. Morris provides a comprehensive head to toe survey of the female human from a zoological, sociological and historical perspective. Each chapter covers a body part of a woman like the eyes, lips, neck, feet, etc. etc. In fact, one third of the books content is on the parts of the head.
The same pattern is followed for each body part to give great insights into its historical and sociological views up to the present time. Fashion trends are next, then biology/anatomy and the sexual significance. Sex is considered in nearly aspect of every part as Morris presents the female human as the most sensual and sexual creature on the planet. In short, the book makes the case that nearly everything about a woman, physical and non-physical, is ultimately about sex in some way, mostly directly.
As an example, the social-historical pattern of trying to produce the super-feminine is extensively documented. Whether it is smaller feet, larger breasts, fuller lips or longer necks, nearly everything has been, and is being, tried. If a slight difference in anatomy indicates being female, then culture tries to take that attribute to an extreme to produce the super feminine, perhaps super-sexy woman.
In the biological category, Morris brings his background as zoologist to bear as he repeatedly demonstrates the principle of neotony in both men and women. Briefly, neotony is the preservation of some child-like or adolescent characteristics through the lifetime. These are expressed differently in men and women but humans have the greatest degree of neotony of any animal. There are plenty of insights into men in the book, but the emphasis is on the more subtle and complex woman.
Morris also does not shy away from describing the mistreatment women have endured through the ages. Modern day cosmetic surgeries are placed in historical perspective. Most of the alterations have been going on for a long time, but it was cruder, riskier and sometimes crueler in the past (and sometimes still today). While there is more material on Western female trends, the author makes an effort to be global in all considerations.
This is not a science book. It is an interesting and well written study for the popular audience. This might matter to some readers looking for a high quality of argumentation in the case Morris presents, which is quite good overall. Sometimes though, in providing evidence for a broader point, the book confuses cause and effect. For example, in the chapter on hands and the wonderful dexterity women possess: "Take a look inside any factory that involves, say, the intricate assembly of the tiny working parts of electronic equipment, and you will see rooms full of agile female hands." - p 127. True, but having women fill the factory has more to do with exploitation at lower wages than their manual dexterity (which is generally superior to men). If the jobs paid three times as much, men would likely occupy them even with less suitable natural skills - that is about harsh economics, not biology acting as cause to the effect Morris observes. In another example, in the buttocks chapter, the fact that female buttocks contain more fat than males leads to the assertion - "the fact that it is gender-linked automatically makes it a female sex signal" - p224. Really? Automatically? Of course the buttocks are sexual, but having smaller more nimble hands is also gender-linked, yet they are not automatically considered a sexual signal, nor should they be. This just seems to be careless wording, but it illustrates a little too much zeal to drive home the sexual nature of women. These are not big issues, but do not expect the book to be tightly argued on a consistent basis. It is fascinating and educational, but not necessarily designed to sail through a critical review.
Finally, there is always the possible objection that Morris being human is susceptible to bias in favor of his own species when he assesses subjective female qualities. Perhaps a male aardvark would conclude the female aardvark is the sexiest creature on the planet. I think Morris does a nice job making his case in this regard and it is not an easy point to overcome ones own bias. Of course, I'm quite biased myself as a life long fan of human females, so who knows? Perhaps the female carpenter ant really should win, but not in my book and certainly not in Morris'.
I love the book and recommend it for both men and women. It is too explicit for children. These age recommendation things are always tricky, but I would recommend a minimum age of 17 and preferably a little older. Apart from that caveat, enjoy learning about women like you've never learned them before. Five stars for being daring enough to take on the subject in such an interesting way.
EXCELLENT BOOK.......2007-07-09
I found this to be an excellent book which every woman should read to have a far better understanding of her body. Too many women don't understand their bodies and thus cannot appreciate their capabilities.
This is also a book that every man should read to gain a
better understanding of the Female Body. This knowledge
makes a man much more able to give a woman far greater satisfaction while making love.
A great number of divorces result, directly or indirectly, from an unsatisfactory sex life. Generally,
this is due to a lack of knowledge on the part of one or both partners.
junk science.......2007-06-05
Desmond works on the premise that the genders are equal as long as they keep to their 'biological places,' i.e. women stay home, men work, and other crap assumptions built on biased science. He even asserts that women naturally have long hair solely because men like to touch it. This is a book about women, but even this book aims to talk about women as if they are the 'other' gender. Even when the books aim is to make women the focus, it still talks about women as if they are abstract beings to be inteerpreted by a man serving perspective. Crap! Stick to the book, Women: An Intimate Geography. It is a great book written by a woman, who bashes through gender science to illuminate how much of what we take for science about the genders is nothing but crock science aimed at perpetuating gender biases than actual science. What is a man writing a book about women for anyways- a woman will be far more illuminatory on the subject.

Easy reading! Hard to put down!.......2004-05-11
Jack does a wonderful job in "Season at the Point." Even for those who have never birded at Cape May, the book is truly entertaining and informative. The book was very easy to read, and Jack's descriptions are very detailed. Even if you live far away from Cape May Point, this a great book to own. It is astounding to read about the number and variety of birds seen at this spot over the years. The commentary on the characters that frequent CMBO is great! Jack was one of my college professors and was so knowledgeable on birds that I decided to purchase his book. What a great investment! Thanks, Jack.- Anthony J. Chodan
A gentle, yet high-impact book.......2000-07-17
This is a book of many moods, and all of them well-written. It is, by turns, a giggle-provoking acocunt of the eccentricities of those strange folks who watch birds, a warmly nostalgic portrait of the Cape May that once was, a fascinating account of the on-the-spot naturalism that goes on during migrations, and a compelling call for action to preserve the remaining natural beauty of this unique point in the otherwise wasted state of New Jersey. Though it is definitely a sedate read, it is a pleasant one.

useful.......2001-08-06
This is good book although I don't usually use it as my first source. The pictures are looking up at the underside of the wings which is great if you go hawk watching at migrattion time and there are lots of them but I use North American Raptors by Wheeler/Clark more because it has great pictures and hawks I usually see are either flying by or are sitting on a telephone wire/tree branch. Still, its a good reference and has info on migration that you don't get in other books. Its good as a supplement to other hawk books
The only "must have" for hawkwatchers.......2000-08-21
"Hawk Watch" is the best beginning guide to hawk watch identification and procedures available. Its large format and clear line drawings make it an excellent field reference. The text is direct and accurate. I am site compiler for a hawk watch, and this is the only reference that I urge my volunteers to purchase. Despite the fact that this work is limited to the species found in the eastern US, western birders would still find much of the text quite useful.

Book Description
This digital document is an article from Wilson Bulletin, published by Wilson Ornithological Society on December 1, 2002. The length of the article is 3321 words. From the author: The Broad-winged Hawk (Buteo plalypterus) breeds in eastern and central Canada and the United States, and winters in Central America and northern and central South America. Birders and ornithologists count migrating Broad-winged Hawks at dozens of traditional watch sites throughout the northeastern United States. We modeled counts of migrating Broad-winged Hawks from two raptor migration watch sites: Montclair Hawk Lookout, New Jersey, and Hawk Mountain Sanctuary, Pennsylvania, to determine whether annual abundance and trend estimates from individual sites within the mid-Atlantic states are representative of the region as a whole. We restricted ourselves to counts made between 10:00 and 16:00 EST during September to standardize count effort between sites. We created one model set for annual counts and another model set for daily counts. When modeling daily counts we incorporated weather and identity of individual observers. Akaike's Information Criteria were used to select the best model from an ini tial set of competing models. Annual counts declined at both sites during 1979-1998. Broad-winged Hawk migration began, peaked, and ended later at Montclair than at Hawk Mountain, even though Hawk Mountain is 155 km west-southwest of Montclair. Mean annual counts of hawks at Montclair were more than twice those at Hawk Mountain, but were not correlated. Broad-winged Hawks counted at Montclair may not be the same birds as those counted at Hawk Mountain. Rather, the two sites may be monitoring different regional sub populations. Broad-winged Hawks counted at the two sites may use different migration tactics, with those counted at Hawk Mountain being more likely to slope soar, and those at Montclair more likely to use thermal soaring. A system of multiple watch sites is needed to monitor various breeding populations of this widely dispersed migrant.

NOT BAD FOR THE PRICE.......2007-03-20
Coach Andrew Coverdale and Dan Robinson have written a good book. It is full of diagrams and it is easy to follow. I am sure it will help a lot of coaches improve their passing game.
I recommend this book be used by high school coaches and above.

"THE EXPLOSIVE DOUBLE SLOT OFFENSE"

Chalk full of ideas.......2002-05-16
Just buy it. There are so many good ideas in here everyone who reads it will benefit.
Excellent!.......2000-04-23
This is perhaps one of the best technical football books I have read. Great diagrams and detailed explanation in a simple form make for a good read and easy installation instructions. A must for any offensive coordinator.
Are you in love with the run? Well you won't be anymore........2000-03-19
I ran the wing t offense for 10 years with great effectiveness forcing teams to play eight man fronts. I always felt I could not pass because you need talent thrower and speedy receivers to pass. So I forced my teams to continue running the football even with eight man fronts. Kind of chopping down a tree with a sledge hammer. Then I read this book. Not only do you not need a good thrower or speedy receivers, but if you want something that is going to confuse the defense. Then do not look any further. This book will completely change your offensive attitude towards the pass. I no longer pass with fear. The book is easy to understand and is a great reference for both offensive and defensive coordinators. It goes with any offensive philosophy. Mine is wing T and I have not change my philosophy it just enhance it. If you pass this book by you are making a big mistake. I now have defense playing 6 and 7 men fronts which is a lot easier to run on. No matter how much of committment you choose to use in your passing game: a lot or once in a while, this book will give that edge over today's defenses.
Detail, detail, detail.......1999-07-03
Coverdale and Robinson explain the "Bunch" attack so effectively you feel you could have a pop warner team run it and run it well. It is X's and O's, so if someone doesn't understand the game, it won't make any sense, but why would anyone buy this book if that were so? Once they get down to the nitty gritty of the attack, which seems to take a while, they give detailed descriptions of how they can break down nearly any defense with the concepts. If you coach, and you want a better passing game, get it. You won't be sorry.

Book Description
Stretching is one of the most effective ways to enhance overall fitness. This easy-to-use tool by the author of the best-selling Yoga Deck addresses key body regions-neck, shoulders, back, legs-in a handy portable format. Slip it into a gym bag and supplement any workout or use it any time to promote flexibility, prevent injury, and release tension.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific health guide.......2007-07-25
I absolutely love this deck. It provides a really comprehensive guide to stretching pretty much any muscle group in your body, keeping you flexible and feeling really good. I naturally get very tight muscles, so I've found this to be an invaluable little tool to help me stay looser. It's organized in a very user-friendly way, with an overall body picture to show where in the deck to find stretches for specific muscles. Each stretch then has illustrations and step-by-step instructions on how to do it correctly, and tells what benefit it provides. Not enough people stretch regularly, and it's something that everyone should do to take care of their body, so I highly recommend this.
good basic stretches.......2007-06-20
if you like box books (and i do) then you'll enjoy this. the stretches are basic but you can pull a few out and do them each day. good explanations of the stretches and precautions.
An excellent, excellent product.......2006-11-05
The authors of this Stretch Deck really came up with 50 superb stretches, some of which I was unfamilar with. It would seem they have all the bases covered from head to toe. I like these "decks" because I don't always have the patience to go to a fitness class or watch a DVD and if I know and understand many of the exercises I can do them myself at home. Olivia Miller also authors the Yoga Deck which is another superb product.
Great stretches.......2005-08-11
These are great basic stretches. Each is nicely illustrated on one side of a card with written instructions and benefits on the other side. One complaint...the illustrations are white on a gray background. I believe they would be more visible with more contrast...Still would not have kept me from buying or using them.
Handy and very useful.......2004-12-29
I bought this a couple of days ago. Its portable and many of the excercises can be performed simply even at your work desk. I have been doing the neck stretches and they seem to work very well. The illustrations in the back are nice and the directions for the stretches are easy to understand.

Book Description
Art aficionados beware - when Kaname's class gets a lesson on painting, Sosuke threatens to crush any high-brow ideas with a thorough lesson on the art of war! Not to be outdone by her gun-crazy bodyguard, Kaname attempts the improbable as she moves to domesticate Sosuke in the kitchen. When Christmas comes, the gift-giving gets competitive, especially when the struggle is for Sosuke's affections. All Kaname can wish for is that her social nightmare turns into a sweet dream, as the crazy gunplay continues in Full Metal Panic! Volume 6.
