Great Book. We are using it in my college course, but gives a great overview of the subject either way!

Soil degradation causes a shrinking of arable land resources, and the persistence of starvation and malnutrition. The depletion is compounded by the increasing populations of developing tropical nations, and the conversion of agricultural land to other uses. As a result, per capita grain harvesting and irrigated land is in steady decline all over the world. The decrease in horticultural resources and productivity has inspired Soil Quality and Agricultural Sustainability, which is based primarily on papers presented at the 1996 conference on soil degradation, sponsored by Ohio State University, the USAID and the International Agricultural Research Centers. The book addresses itself to six concerns: basic concepts and global issues, nutrient and water inputs, soil quality management in Asia, in Africa, and in the Tropical Americas, and future priorities. The Editor's goal is a new paradigm in soil quality research: a multidisciplinary approach. He proposes that an erosion management program include soil scientists, hydrologists, climatologists, sedimentologists, geographers, agronomists, agricultural engineers, land use planners, economists, anthropologists and social scientists. Lal advocates an optimistic, forward-thinking brand of soil science that concentrates on conservation and fertility. The 26 chapters explore what Lal considers to be the priorities: agricultural sustainability, soil quality, food security, quality restoration, long-term management, and the failure to adopt new technology. In sum, they paint a comprehensive portrait of the current state, and future prospects, for worldwide agronomic viability.

This is one the the favorite books I have ever read. It is not an easy read for a non-scientist, but absolutely rewarding. It is surprisingly accessible, despite the technical and intellectual scope. The logical and insightful nature of Kurzweil's arguments make it a compelling and inspirational read. The book has had a huge impact on my thinking and introduced me to the whole subject of futurism. It is affecting my investment and career decisions. There were numerous mind-bending, mind-expanding moments during reading this as the gravity of the concepts sank in. Garreau's book, Radical Evolution, is a great follow-up read, comparing and contrasting Kurzweil's optimism with the pessimism of others. It is a joy and luxury to be exposed to the visions such "big thinkers".

I read this book with such optimism for our future. I only hope to live long enough to see some of the exciting events in our future on this planet. Just when you think you have seen it all, you "ain't seen nutt'n yet". Come on world let's work together and solves some of the mysteries that are tearing us apart.

Although the reading is tedious for someone who is not that scientifically or computer oriented, the concepts and ideas the book presents are fascinating and a bit scary!

Most important book of the next 50 yrs.......2007-07-25

At some point I hope that people will stop paying attention to Paris Hilton and read this book. Our species is at a crossroads and we have some very important decisions to make in the next few decades. This book more than any other will prepare us to make the right choices. Read it now, or be devoured by a swarm of nanobots in 2029 when Skynet takes over.

Elsewhere he has argued that eliminating fat intake can prevent cancer; here, his quarry is the future of consciousness and intelligence. Humankind, it runs, is at the threshold of an epoch ("the singularity," a reference to the theoretical limitlessness of exponential expansion) that will see the merging of our biology with the staggering achievements of "GNR" (genetics, nanotechnology and robotics) to create a species of unrecognizably high intelligence, durability, comprehension, memory and so on. The word "unrecognizable" is not chosen lightly: wherever this is heading, it won't look like us. Kurzweil's argument is necessarily twofold: it's not enough to argue that there are virtually no constraints on our capacity; he must also convince readers that such developments are desirable. In essence, he conflates the wholesale transformation of the species with "immortality," for which read a repeal of human limit. In less capable hands, this phantasmagoria of speculative extrapolation, which incorporates a bewildering variety of charts, quotations, playful Socratic dialogues and sidebars, would be easier to dismiss. But Kurzweil is a true scientista large-minded one at thatand gives due space both to "the panoply of existential risks" as he sees them and the many presumed lines of attack others might bring to bear. What's arresting isn't the degree to which Kurzweil's heady and bracing vision fails to convincegiven the scope of his projections, that's inevitablebut the degree to which it seems downright plausible.

A must have book for your living room coffee table collection.
I do not like how Jay Adams was thrown out there in this book,and the controversy over Dusto and the pipe Salba got busted in is bogus BS,but aside from that,this book is WELL worth the $20 bucks for a crisp,clean and new copy.

If you are a skater for life,you must own this.

Purchase this,and if you don't have the spending gitas,get your girlfriend or mom to buy it!

I hope the 25 year anniversary book is better, the cover of it looks promising enough with Jay Adams and the classic Skate & Destroy motto I live by across the front, but this one is b o r i n g.

If u dont read it you are truly missing out it was worth every cent.

No stroke order.......2006-04-22

Received my Kanji Cards II set yesterday. I'm disappointed to see that unlike the first set the second set does not include the stroke order on the back. Overall, still a great learning aid though. Wish they would come out with a third set.

disappointing box.......2005-10-10

The cards themselves are as they are described on the site.
But the box is somewhat disappointing. Once the set of cards have been taken out, and the little paper band has been removed, it's hard to get them back in without shuffling the cards

Romaji inappropriate for this level.......2004-05-08

This set of 566 cards follows on the first set of 440 cards. I find it highly inappropriate for cards targeted at someone who has studied at least 400 Kanji to use Romaji. Romaji distracts experienced students, misleads beginner students, and serves no real purpose once you have studied the basic forty or so set of Hiragana. I returned these cards after a week because of the Romaji.

Buy both sets, you'll need them........2003-09-10

These cards are a real bargain, so you should definitely buy both sets, which together contain about half of the kanji that you'll need to achieve literacy in Japanese. You will save a lot of time and learn some new compounds by purchasing these cards instead of making your own.

I really like these cards but after number 441 it jumps.......2003-03-06

These set of cards along with the first set is nice but after number 441 it jumps to 582 (my set does I wonder if it is only the one I got that is like that?) and skips from 442 through 581. So now I have a double print of 582 through 722 in my set. Still, they are helpful for study or review. :)
