Book Description
This volume presents mathematical formulas and theorems commonly used in economics. It includes both formulas like Roy`s identity that are peculiar to economics and formulas like Leibniz's rule that are common to many areas of applied mathematics. The volume is meant to be a reference work, to be used by students in conjunction with a textbook and by researchers in need of exact statements of mathematical results. The volume is the first grouping of this material for a specifically economist audience.
Customer Reviews:
All the formulae an economist needs.......2007-03-01
Economists' Mathematical Manual is a very good book. It gives in a very concise and clear way all an economist needs as far as maths and statistics are concerned. I would recommend the purchase!
Helpful but not complete.......2006-09-27
This book is very helpful for any economist, especially for students. It includes many formulas that are common in economics. I used the book a lot during my first-year phd course and it was very helpful because it is pretty compact. However, be careful as there are some minor errors in the book. Second, I cannot recommend it if you are interested mainly in econometric theory. You will find the basic distributions and a couple of other formulas, however there are still too few formulas about GMM or Filters etc. All in all I would recommend you the book.
Excellent reference and then some.........2002-10-25
This book is great. It provides an outstanding reference tool for graduate, but also undergraduate students. Even if you're not entirely into studying economics, and only come up against it occasionally, you can get your money's worth with this title. I purchased this as a reference while finishing undergraduate work and I'm sure it will serve me well in graduate school as well. Don't miss this, and buy a copy while it's available.
Extremely Condensed and Extremely Useful!.......2001-01-19
Sydsaeter et al. have compiled what must be the most condensed reference book in the field, given its amazingly broad scope but small number of pages. Just a few of the multitude of topics covered in this book are set theory, dynamic optimization, vector spaces, convexity, determinants, risk aversion theory, and probability distributions. The presentational format is essentially that of an extensive list, with copious notes in the margins.
The brevity of Economists' Mathematical Manual is simultaneously its greatest strength and its greatest weakness. The strength obviously lies in its diverse scope. Few books could claim to be authoritative over such a wide spectrum of subfields of economics.
Yet the lack of exposition can also be perceived as a weakness. This book is extremely useful as a reference, but first-year Ph.D. students should be warned that it should be considered supplemental only. A textbook such as Simon and Blume's Mathematics for Economists or Chiang's Fundamental Methods of Mathematical Economics should be the reference of first recourse for anyone encountering mathematical economics for the first time.
handy little book.......2000-10-14
I got this little book when I was in college studying economics and kept it throughout grad school in econ. It's been surprisingly useful, mostly because it contains formulas and no extraneous text. A pocket version would be even better.

Soundbites not real information.......2005-01-10
Not very inspiring, a lot of tired ideas and phrases. Every now and again there was something fresh, but I found the book lacking in content. One tip is to "keep your filing system easy to use and understand". That's it, that's the entire idea, no tips on how you might actually do that. I don't see how it's that useful as an idea without more information. So am I to understand that before reading this I was attempting to make my filing system complex and difficult to understand? Not awful, just not in any way life altering.
It's a good start. Value the money.......2000-08-06
Initially I bought the book while on vacation just to read something, and ended up using it as part of a People Management Program that I implemented in my department in order to improve the work life balance. It has ideas and suggestions very easy to implement, that you can execute very quick and get good results: ideas that you can communicate in a few lines and get a big impact. Buy it, it's worth.

Book Description
Remediation and Management of Degraded Lands presents the program of the first International Conference on the Remediation and Management of Degraded Lands. This collection reviews the extent of resource debasement and offers solutions for their restoration. The 14-part first section deals with mine management and rehabilitation. Topics include the devastating results of open-cut mining, open-pit mining, lignite surface mining and acid mining. Despite such ruin, the articles reveal the possibilities for reclamation. Part two devotes nine chapters to the management of derelict lands. Reforestation, soil fertility prognosis, and the uses of nitrogen are just a few of the covered subjects. This portion of the book pays special attention to the successful results of remediation in China and Hong Kong. The final division addresses soil contamination and reclamation. There are eleven chapters on subjects that include the single and interactive effects of aluminum, the effectiveness of EDTA/HCI and the value of pig-on-litter compost as a tool for edible crop growth. These and other innovative techniques make Remediation and Management of Degraded Lands a valuable addition to any environmental library.

Book Description
Leading experts present methodologies for basinwide approaches to water quality restoration. In 15 chapters the identification of pollution sources, definition of standards and their attainability, surface and groundwater modeling, remediation of contaminated soils and sediments, development and implementation of low cost treatment technologies, basinwide water quality management and remediation, and economic and institutional issues are covered. The book focuses on the situation in central and eastern European countries; however, the topics and solutions are of general interest and have worldwide applications.
Book Description
Twenty-five years after it first caused a splash in the scientific and literary worlds, Intimate Behavior is still one of the best chronicles of human intimacy. With a masterful and entertaining eye, Desmond Morris, bestselling author of The Naked Ape and The Human Zoo, analyzes the roots of
human intimacy, from the handshake through the twelve stages that people pass through on their way to the total sexual embrace. Morris contends that the months just before and after birth are when the seeds of intimacy are planted and are critical to development. From the loving attention of the
mother, the child learns and responds with intimate gestures of his or her own. He argues that human adults follow certain patterns of intimate behaviour that are based on these infant experiences for their entire lives. In addition to sexual intimacy, Morris discussed social intimacy, intimacy
substitutes, object intimacy, and self-intimacy. Complete with a new preface by the author, Intimate Behavior is a provocative view of humans need to touch and to be touched, to love and to be loved. At a crucial moment, a gentle embrace can still do more good than a thousand earnest discussions.
Despite all our social and technological advances, the primeval body language of love still remains the most potent force we have for the expression of feelings of comfort and caring. Desmond Morris, from his new Preface
Customer Reviews:
Extraordinary.......2007-06-19
I am new to Morris' general work but I am thourougly impressed. So far I have read this book and The Naked Ape.
This book lags in certain parts, but he consistently gives detailed attention to all aspects of human intimacy - the sections Sexual Intimacy, alone (at least) are worth reading as he couragously attends to a very difficult subject of love and sex in very practical ways. His thinking on this front is well stated and offers doorways for the thinking man to manifest new ways forward for the sepcies.
Intimate Behavior.......2005-10-23
I also enjoy reading books by Desmond Morris. This book was very interesting and provided several unexpected insights into animal testing and into child rearing. It is easy to read but a little dry at times. I recommend it.
Another universal classic by Desmond Morris !.......2005-04-15
Dr. Morris has written another marvelous book that clearly elucidates the intimate behavior of the human animal. It is delightful, interesting and informative.
It is definitely a book worth reading.......
Great Read but where did Sigmund Freud come from?.......2001-07-15
Although the book dates back several decades, with only a short updated prologue, the subject ,human intimacy, does not lend itself to change as quickly as technology or medicine therefore the information and opinions are still valid today. Desmond Morris captivated me with his zoological perspective on human behavior, viewing us as we are, animals; but with social restrictions and norms that artificially restrain our natural urge for intimacy.
I found it a fascinating read but found the last few sections not in line with his zoology background but rather from a ridiculous psychoanalytic perspective. This perspective is not based on scientific fact or reason but formulated by Freud from unrecorded observations that he recounted by memory of case studies he had saw. Having Desmond Morris try and convince me that I indulge in the occassional cigar, which represents a "super nipple", as a substitute for intimacy that I recieved as a child made me crack up rather than stop and reflect on his brilliance. This type of opinion seems to me out of Zoology's domain.
I rather enjoyed the sections concerning parental, sexual, and social behaviour as they were told from a zoological perspective, while the later sections had the sour flavour of Sigmond Freud. I do recommend this book to anyone interested in the behavioural sciences particularly in the ways we touch and do not touch each other. So dont be scared to 'touch' this book and become 'intimate' with its pages as you will learn much from it.
Sweet Science.......2000-09-15
If science is regarded as a dry and boring matter Dr. Morris' Intimate Behavior comes to prove it wrong. In this delightful book the scientist states that "man is a social animal and the ordinary healthy human being finds prolonged isolation a severe punishment.
According to Dr. Morris the very beginning of our lives is replete with intimacy in our contact with our mother. After a brief while our quest for independence launches us toward the unknown world. If this urge for independence and exploration is the base for the development of human society it also weights heavily on the individual that loses the so needed intimacy. During puberty when the young couples start to form the intimacy returns and with it there's usually a certain return to infancy. That's when young adults cuddle each other and call each other babies usually using high pitch voices.
Dr. Morris warns us about the crescent overcrowding found on the "Human Zoo", the modern megalopolis. The overcrowding creates a high level of stress that helps to separate people. This creates a positive feedback link: elevated stress level reduces intimate contact that in turn increases the stress.
This 19971 book although covering fast changing subjects like human behavior and human evolution is still surprisingly up to date. As in his other books Dr. Morris presents the topics based in precise scientific propositions backed by his observations, historical analysis and by the painstaking study of over 10,000 magazine and newspaper pictures.
This book is a must read for everyone interested in human behavior. You will be surprised to learn why do we do the things we do. Other fantastic books by Dr. Morris include the revolutionary "The naked Ape", the "Human Zoo" and the recent "The Human Animal" that accompanies the TV series and summarizes his work.

Book Description
The six reviews in this latest issue of
Advances in Ecological Research cover a broad spectrum of ecology, from micro-patterns and processes, to the ecophysiology of the individual organism, to forest-scale processes. Topics covered include the possible evolutionary forces that have shaped particular strategies, and the potential and limitations for techniques in ecology, such as fractal geometry, field experiments and eddy co-variance measures. Despite this diversity of topics, there are plenty of points of contact and cross-reference.

Book Description
This book is published as part of the broad area of research on the changing global climate and its impact on the environment. The upper timberline is the most conspicuous vegetation limit in high-mountain areas of all continents and islands, except for the Antarctic. The dynamics of timberline establishment and maintenance could well be affected by global warming in a number of ways. From a global viewpoint, the present timberline is far from being caused only by the current climate, but instead reflects also history of climate and local site conditions. Thus, the main objective of the book is to explain mountain timberlines as space- and time-related phenomena.
After an introduction into the complexities of the subject, the history and present state of timberline research are outlined. Chapters on the tree species at timberline and on the relationship of timberline elevation to macroclimate, climate character and the mass-elevation effect follow. The main chapter deals with the physiognomic and ecological differentiation of upper timberlines, in particular with the timberline controlling physical and biological factors, their interactions and their influence on the spatial structures and temporal dynamics in the timberline ecotone. Also, the influences of trees and tree stands on site conditions are considered. This is the base for understanding the response of timberlines to climatically driven changes, which are considered in the last chapters.

Book Description
Nobody ever threw a baseball better than Sandy Koufax. He dominated the game -- and the ball, making it rise, break, sing. Then, after his best season, in 1966, he was gone, retired at age thirty, leaving behind a reputation as the game's greatest lefty and most misunderstood man. The Brooklyn boy whom the Dodgers signed as "the Great Jewish Hope" will forever be known for his refusal to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series because it fell on Yom Kippur. Forty years later, Koufax stands apart and alone, a legend who declines his own celebrity. In Sandy Koufax: A Lefty's Legacy, Jane Leavy dispels the mystery to discover a man more than worthy of the myth.
Customer Reviews:
Readable & Revealing.......2007-04-30
This admirable biography mixes a little baseball history with its revealing insight into one of the game's greatest pitchers. Readers learn much about Sandy Koufax, from his Brooklyn childhood, to his college basketball days, to his modest-then-stellar career with the Brooklyn/LA Dodgers from 1955-1966. As these pages show, Koufax was highly intelligent player who marched to his own drum. He also emerged from several years as a struggling southpaw into the game's most dominant hurler. During the five seasons (1962-1966) that he dominated baseball Koufax sported a phenomenal 111-34 won-loss record and 1.95 ERA - far eclipsing the game's other top hurlers. Sadly, painful arthritis in his pitching arm led him to retire (at age 30) after the 1966 season, when his superb record (27-9, 1.73 ERA) helped lead his team to another pennant. As a Jewish player, Koufax endured occasional Anti-Semitic taunts, and he made headlines by electing not to pitch the opening game of the 1965 World Series due to a major Jewish holiday. Still, many teammates thought him quite cool, and Pirates slugger Willie Stargell said that hitting against Koufax was like trying to drink coffee with a fork.
Author Jane Levy interviewed hundreds of teammates, friends, etc., in writing this book, although Koufax himself declined to participate. His absence leads to a slight feeling of incompleteness, but this remains a very interesting and revealing effort.
It's about the great stories.......2007-04-05
I'll agree with the author that Sandy was a terrific pitcher and an introvert in a sport where it seems like all the really big stars were all capitalizing on their fame. But the really great thing about the book were all the personal stories...between catcher and pitcher, Drysdale and Koufax, kids and coaches who grew up with Sandy, opposing players and managers who played against the Dodgers, etc.
Certainly there was some myth-making going on...by the author as well as many of the teammates who played with Sandy. I think that's what happens when you meet up with an extraordinary talent who enjoys his privacy on his terms.
Loved the little quotes by Ernie Banks and the one story when Mickey Mantle faced him in the world series. Baseball isn't just a fun game to play...it's the stories that are fun as well and this book tells them very well. You'll enjoy it.
A Story that Surpasses the Title! .......2007-01-19
I really do not know much about the history, stats, or events of baseball. This book was so much more than that. It makes you wish you had either known or met Mr. Koufax. This is a story that both men & women from all walks of life would love. It was a reminder that truly complex, compassionate,non-conforming men are out there. Who are not so much impressed by WHAT they do, but more about HOW they do it. Today's athlete would never make the choices and sacrifices that Mr. Koufax did. Sadly, those days are long gone.
A Dodger Fan's Must Read.......2006-10-31
Growing up a huge LA Dodger fan, I eagerly consumed each page of this book. I received A Lefty's Legacy a few years ago, read a few chapters and put the book down as Jane was a little too down in the details about Sandy's adolescence. How he dealt with his step-father, sandlot ball and his aspirations of playing basketball provided some insight into Sandy's character, but the content was rather dry and dull.
I did find the 9 "innings" of the perfect game, interlaced in between chapters of the book (and Koufax's life) curious and interesting. But honestly, as a perfect game starts out, there is a lack of excitement...even as described within this book.
There has been criticism over Jane's inclusion of Sandy's decision to observe Yom Kippur (instead of pitching game 1 of the '65 Series) and the details surrounding Sandy's Jewish heritage. I found that chapter very telling in who Koufax was then and is now, breaking down the misconceptions of his perceived reclusive life.
For a Koufax or Dodger fan, this book is a must.
Koufax Biscuit?.......2006-10-18
Jane Leavy has attempted to turn Koufax's baseball life into a Seabiscuit-like book, but the effort doesn't quite pan out. Using Koufax's perfect game from 1965 as the central part of the book, she goes back and forth between that one game and the other parts of Koufax's life. There are few details about Koufax's early years with the club, and short thrift is given to the most of his baseball achievements. Surely, she could have found some articles to quote from that were written at the time he evolved into the pitcher he became famous for being, but instead, Leavy relies too much on interviews with men whose memories of the good old days aren't crystal clear.
Parts of this book were hard to read through, but coming in at under 300 pages helped make the book's problems surmountable. If you skip the ten pages that speculate on where Sandy actually spent his day when he refused to pitch on Yom Kippur, the book will be an even faster read.
Customer Reviews:
Great Workbook!.......2006-03-24
I've have a few Japanese texts to go through (being a Japanese Major) and many of them had workbooks to go with them. This is by far the best workbook I've come across. It gives a few pages of practice instead of one page (which is what you normally get). In short, I really like this workbook, from the way it's set up to the experience you get from using it. Great Buy.
An editing disaster.......2001-04-21
I have the second edition of the workbook and the second edition of the textbook. Apparently when they edited and "simplified" the textbook nobody bothered to update the workbook. As a result, the workbook references incorrect page numbers in the textbook, and asks you to know words that no longer appear in the vocabulary lists of the text. This series also emphasizes learning kana and kanji more than other beginning books I've seen, which can be good or bad depending on why you are studying Japanese.
This book is great!.......2000-03-31
Allthough I did not purchase it on Amazon.com (I bought it when it came out in '94), I recommend wholeheartedly that you buy it now! It's THE best book of it's kind, and will do you know wrong. There are a few errors, but only experts on the subject would locate them. Allthough the culture is changing in Japan, most of this holds true today.
