Richard Barrett again does an outstanding job of clearly stating his main points, then building on them with facts and good examples. He is able to expertly blend some of the key principles of other authors -- Ken Wilbur and Don Beck -- with some of his material. The text provides some excellent evaluation tools, both for individuals and organizations. He references a number of websites for additional clarity of some of his points. He has an excellent reference list at the end of the book. Anyone who is looking at leadership and organizational values/vision/mission will do well to read this timely book.

Richard does another excellent job describing the seven levels of consciousness model and how this framework can be used to effectively measure an organization's culture. This process provides a values-based approach within a whole system perspective. I'm a multi sport athlete who trains all year round regardless of what sport I play. I bought a few of these Ultimate Guide to Weight Training books, and they definitely helped me train specifically for the different sports that I play. Then about a year later I received an email from amazon that there was a new edition out. These upgraded editions are even better than the originals, with more articles and a lot more sport-specific information. I would definitely recommend this series to anyone who plays a lot of sports or wants to specifically focus on training for one sport in particular.

I am very pleased with my copy of this book. It has everything I was looking for with photos, tips, and detailed programs. It goes into depth about the specific muscles used throughout the swing and used when throwing. Possibly the most important thing I got from this book is improved speed and power in rotating my torso which helps with both swinging and throwing harder. My hips are also more powerful and balance has improved.

Exactly what I needed to get in shape for softball.......2006-04-27
Let's face it, I'm a soft lump right now and 10 weeks away I start my 3rd season of softball (co-ed work league). Last year I was fat, slow, had a mediocre to poor season AND pulled a hammy during play offs. Since then I gained 10 lbs.
So I looked around the net for some tips to get in back shape for my July season. Found this great book and am loving it.
It has the much needed off season and pre season programs as well as in-season. The part I like the most is it gives substitution exercises in case you can't do what they recommend (like dips for me).
Has all the good tips for proper technique, chaging things up and how to train best specificaly the muscles for playing softball. I see this book being great for people in serious leagues to beer drinking big guys like myself who are looking to get back to our 25 year old shape (10 years ago) and show some of the guys I'm not just a funny benchwarmer this year.
Very happy with this purchase.

Illuminating SAAB mechanics.......2007-03-18
I bought this manual because I expected it to be an improvement over my other manuals - and it certainly was. This is probably the most complete SAAB service manual in existance without acquiring the actual SAAB service manual(s) themselves.
NOT MUCH HELP SO FAR..........2006-12-30
I recently bought a 1985 Saab 900S and this service manual was given to me with the car. I new the car had a bad starter when I purchased the car, but I figured that it wouldn't be much of a problem. I have replaced many starters on many different vehicles...so no big deal right?...WRONG! I looked for the starter under the front part of the engine, but I couldn't find it. I then looked in the manual, which did not have even 1 picture or diagram of the starter anywhere! Not only that, there was absolutely no mention of its loacation anywhere in the manual or how to remove and replace it. I had to trace out the positive lead from the battery to find it! It then took me approximately 5 hours, just to figure out how to remove the starter and remove it. I had to remove many hoses and assemblies, just to get into position to remove the starter, and even then it was extremely difficult! Yet, there is NOTHING in the manual to guide you through this, not even a lousy picture or diagram. I guess that they must have assumed that its all routine for the novice mechanic. Either that..., or an oversite on their part!? I called several 'saab mechanics', and the 'saab dealership' as well. They all considered this a major job! One mechanic even declined to take on the job! The dealer wanted $975.00 to do the job and also told me that I would be without my car for several days! Lucky for me, I was able to get it done myself somehow.
The next thing to do was to replace any worn or suspicious looking bushings,hoses and belts. I figured that it would be better to do this now, rather then wait for another problem!? This was reinforced in me one evening while driving home. I was almost home when a worn bushing exploded when I downshifted and hit the gas. The location of this bushing affected not just the carberation, but also the power steering! The car wouldn't idle and was extremely difficult to steer, but I made it home. After this, I decided to replace all suspicious looking bushings,hoses and belts. I did this with little trouble on my own, never referring to the manual until I got to the belts. I referred to the manual for the second time for this repair, after being NO help to me with the starter motor! The manual does did have picture this time, but not so fast. There are 4 belts to be changed. There are 2 alternator/waterpump belts, 1 power steering belt and 1 ac compressor belt. The manual tells you to refer to figure # for the ac compressor belt pulley..which is nowhere to be found! There is no figure or illustration for this particular belt! The manual did have diagrams for the other two belt repairs...but not this one! Even though they refer to a diagram that isn't even there! Another oversite I guess...
I have since been able to replace all 4 shocks, replace all 4 rotors and break pads all around and tune up the car (distributor, rotor and plugs), without referring to the manual! I did call upon it twice and was disappointed both times...especially the first! I have owned the car for about 4 months now and came to Amazon.com to find a more complete and user friendly manual. If there isn't one out there...'do it yourselfer's' like myself with equal or lesser automotive knowledge, will find themselves in a pickle.

The story is also told through a collection of other characters, including a genius of a coach overmatched when off the field, a driven quarterback sidetracked by booze and an angry loner fresh from the army stockade who reclaims his life on the gridiron. As an ex-Lynvet player and Annopolis grad, I thouroughly enjoyed "State of Grace." Mr. Timberg successfully brings you back to a much more difficult, but, in many ways, a simpler time. He provides vivid and colorful descriptions of his teamates and the challeges that they faced while entering adulthood.
"State of Grace" is a timeless book about young men living difficult lives, by today's standards, and through football and comraderie find their ways through life. I recommend this book to everyone, but especially to teenagers and their parents.
More than a football story.......2005-07-19
This book will appeal to anyone who grew up in the 50's/60's, especially in the New York area. The football aspect is a thread; the focus is on coming of age and the changes in society that took place in that era.
It was a personal bonus to me in that I knew the Stuyvesant High School folks mentioned in the book. They were a special breed, dealing with long commutes to school & practices while succeeding in one of the most academically challenging high schools in the U. S.

As I came to know the Lynvets in State of Grace, I found myself caring about each and every one of them while rooting for them to succeed in the games of football and life.
Robert Timberg comes across as an uncomplaining, grateful warm human being who appreciates the hardships of his life for the lessons they taught him, and the good things that happened to him and his buddies for the rewards they brought for trying. Unlike Frank McCourt , who, in "Angela's Ashes" and "Tis" constantly complains about his life growing up and shows very little appreciation for the good life that this country has given him. He should take a lesson from Timberg, whose book is equally as good, who loves his country and his fellow man.
It was wonderful to read about the bond between the Lynvets and the competitions that helped almost everyone to mature to his potential.
Despite a surface knowledge of football I thoroughly enjoyed "State of Grace", and the plays are so well described that it doesn't take much familiarty with the game to get involved and root for the Lynvets.
I highly recomment reading this book.

This memoir will never be dated. The son of a Ziegfield girl and an aspiring songwriter Timberg's book has you rooting for him from the beginning as challenge after challenge threaten to keep him down. He pulls himself into manhood and takes us with him in this superbly crafted work. His goal, Annapolis, is preceded by two years of trying to obtain an appointment. During this interregnum, he joins a sandlot football team made up of good, sometimes errant, boy/men wondering about destinies. A page turner.
