Minority audience only.......2005-08-03
Oh dear. It seems I'm more or less a lone voice of dissent amongst all this praise heaped upon Dr. Wolberg's book. I've been in possession of this book for some time. For the most part, it has been gathering dust on a lonely bookshelf. Every so often though, I bring it down to remind myself of why I left it there.
I think the book basically fails. For one thing, who is the target audience? "Cutting-Edge Data Modeling for Non-Statisticians" is the claim on the back cover. Well, I'm happy to say that while I'm a non-statistician, I do have a degree in math, and I didn't find the math presented in this book all that daunting. Having said that, many people will certainly find this book a total non-starter. Unless you have a strong math background, take my advice and don't bother - you just won't know what this guy is talking about.
Sadly, having finally reached the end of this book, I just sat there thinking where do I go from here. I didn't find an answer. Granted, the book has a few interesting things to say about testing, but this hardly warrants the asking price.
If you are an investor with a day job, I believe it would take you a number of years to develop a trading system using the ideas expounded in this book and it probably wouldn't even work as you would quite likely succumb to any one of the many pitfalls the book discusses.
Frankly, I defy anyone to tell me they've made so much as a penny from any of the ideas presented in Dr. Wolberg's book, save perhaps Dr. Wolberg himself. You would be much better advised to spend your time refining your trading systems using the underrated technique of learning by experience.
Sorry, I think this book is nothing more than a glorified plug for Dr. Wolberg's services.
Correction.......2001-01-28
One reviewer states that the author hides the fact that he is associated with the company that commercially exploits the software discussed in the book. However, in the Acknowledgements section of the book, the author acknowledges the two software engineers from Insightware who helped him develop the software. In other words, there is no attempt on the part of the author to hide his ongoing interest in the commercial application of the FKR technology.
A sales pitch for the authors product!.......2000-05-23
The book is actually quite good and Kernel Regression might very well be a good modelling technique. What destroys much of the credibility is that the author is actually the founder of a company that produces KR software. This fact isn't mentioned ANYWHERE in the book. The author just HAPPENS to use a specific software in all his examples. Guess what software? You have to go to the company website to find the connection.
If we set that aside, the book is well written and interesting. Not for the math impaired, though. University level math and statistics needed to be enjoyed in full.
Make the computer your partner and beat the market.......2000-04-10
This is a very significant book because it tells you how to use the computer to be smarter than most other traders. The human mind has great difficulty interpreting many variables at the same time. In fact studies show the mind is able to deal with at most 3 at a time and if the variables are complexly related 2 is the maximum. Experts in many fields make poor decisions because of this human information processing limitation. But financial markets are complex and demand the consideration of many variables. The way around this dilemma is to use the compter as a device to interpret complex information patterns. This has been done for years in oil exploration and medical research. Wolberg shows how software can do this for financial information. It finds information that most other traders are probably ignoring and thus this information contains profit opportunities. He talks about filtering - how his method can improve existing trading methods by finding patterns common to signals that lose money. When those patterns are added to the original strategy there can be a big improvement. Wolberg talks about using his program to predict stock performance and avoid market risk. I think this has a lot of potential. Very good book indeed!
This book really changed my thinking.......2000-04-05
This is a very good book. You need some background in the market to appreciate what Wolberg is saying. But the message is an important one. Most computer users are just asking the computer to signal when their own defined criteria have been met. But in this book the author takes a different approach. He is letting the computer figure out what are the criteria for a good signal. With so many other traders out there using pretty much the same kinds of patterns, I think they are losing their effectiveness. But the right software can enable a computer to find patterns that most other traders can see. So those patterns ought to work better. There is a lot of competition out there and maybe this kind of approach can you the trader an edge over those still working with just eyes and brain.

Long winded but not unbearably so.......2003-04-10
This book was used as part of a Business Management program I'm doing and because of the length of chapters we did not get to cover much of the book. I think that the chapters could have been shortened a great deal and more emphasis placed on important issues. The book itself (quality) is extremely poor. Every student in the class found that despite its having a hard cover the pages were falling out and the binding didn't hold.
Ironically, this books needs some ORGANIZATION.......2002-09-14
Maybe, it is just me but I personally think that the book is poorly written and structured. I dislike the style that the author uses writing this book by constantly mentioning the names of scientists who developed some of the theories. This made it extremely difficult to follow due to the overflow of people's names. An example of my own "I wrote this review because John made an experient with Dave Smith that shows Amazon.com Customers will read it and not purchase the book. Dave Smith with Mark Davidson and Howard James conclude that reviews are good and reviews have become a part of good books". This sentence clearly did not have any great purpose, all it did was take up 'word counts'.
Other bad layouts include: Bad paragraph strucuturing (some paragraphs are so badly strucutured that it takes up the entire page), lack of highlights, bad definitions meant that you would actually have to look in the dictionary to get a better explaination. Another example of mine BAD: "Java is comprised of Legend 1422 and Cobra122, using H111 as a base running-engine symmetric to C1223". ALOT of useless nonsense, instead of simple saying "Java is a computer-friendly high level programming language....."
Maybe, I'm wrong or biased but I have definitely seen and used better books. Please write a review on what you think and maybe correct me on some areas if i'm wrong

Book Description
Grasslands around the world provide most of the world's milk and wool and much of the meat. The growing world population and global warming have put increased pressure on the world's grasslands. Ross Humphreys has played a leading role in the development of grassland science and in this authoritative review discusses how it has evolved over the past sixty years. Using the proceedings of the International Grassland Congress since 1937, Humphreys identifies the shifting emphasis of the science, assesses the current situation and provides perspectives for its future direction.

Great text!.......2007-09-24
This is a great text! It cuts out all of the BS and just presents the facts. Plenty of illustrations. An easy read.
This book is the standard for Micro.......2007-05-10
I'm a bacteriologist getting my Master's. This book is the standard for Micro. From basic microbiology to microbial ecology and even medical micro, this books is great. However, get yourself the INTERNATIONAL EDITION. I have both books. They are exactly the same. Save yourself some cash.
The tradition continues.......2007-04-06
I bought this as a supplement to my research needs as a bioprocess engineering student. Note that I have not used this for a class. As a reference and for background review, I find this book very easy to use. In all my literature review, the older editions of Brock's are the dominating source with regards to textbook references. So in agreement with the profession, I see no reason to overlook this when considering a microbio book.
The best text book ever........2007-02-21
You do need to question your self about this tutle.
It is a pure gold in the area.
It became the book I ever studied from.
The book was good.......2006-12-19
The book came and it was a hardcover which was great! (I hate softcover books since they get mashed in your bookbag, and dont let it rain, your whole book ruins). The book was as advertised. The only thing I wish it came with was an "A" final grade for Microbiology. :-)
Thanks Amazon!

UFO's? T4 bakteriophage is even better.......2001-05-10
Introduction to world of microorganisms. And it is a whole world with more marvels and revelations than the macro world. The book contains a lot of illustrations, but many of the color photographs are artificially colored and certainly not the newest. They had a lot of work to change the book from two to four colors and one can still see this. Maybe, their newest version: "Brock's Biology of Microorganisms", also available at amazon.com, corrects this. Besides it beeing a propper text book, the main highlights come from nature itself which offers such a vast morphological and functional diversity in the micro world. The chapters range from general cell biology through viruses, genetics, industrial microbiology, immunology, medical topics (diagnostics, epidemics, diseaes) to bacteria and archaea. It's nearly too many topics to have them all statisfactorly presented. But since I knew nothing of those topics at all, the book proofed to be quite benifactory to me.

American horse racing's greatest moments.......2005-06-25
If you can still remember where you were and what you were doing when Personal Ensign stuck a desperate nostril in front of Derby-winner, Winning Colors during the 1988 Breeders' Cup Distaff, then you should enjoy "At the Wire" which is packed with similar racing stories.
Not all of the finishes are close ones, as Secretariat's 31-length Belmont blow-out is included, just because it was the most awesome mile-and-a-half most of us have ever seen (or ever will see). Announcer Chick Anderson's pronouncement that Secretariat was "moving like a tremendous machine" will surely find its way into Bartlett's.
Many of the races that Ed Bowen recounts feature pairs of Thoroughbreds whose names are forever linked by their ferocious competitive spirit: John Henry and The Bart; Affirmed and Alydar; Kelso and Gun Bow; Swaps and Nashua; Alsab and Whirlaway; Noor and Citation.
And speaking of ferocious, the 1933 "Fighting Finish" Kentucky Derby certainly featured one of the most unruly battles by jockeys. What with all of the stirrup-grabbing, saddle-cloth-pulling, bumping, and slashing that was going on down the stretch, it's surprising that either Brokers Tip or Head Play finished, much less ran first and second. Riders Fisher and Meade finished their fight in the jockeys' room, then didn't speak to each other again for some fifteen years after their 'Rodeo' Derby.
Bowen doesn't say who won the fight in the jockeys' room.
The author is a noted Turf historian who spent nearly three decades with "The Blood Horse" magazine, which he references quite extensively in these pages. "At the Wire" is not a book that will keep you awake all night, in spite of its exciting subject matter. It is more of a gentle, knowledgeable ramble through 20th century American racing, as exemplified by some of its most courageous and brilliant Thoroughbreds.
Terrific Book.......2005-03-11
This book is a must have for any real horse racing fan. It chronciles all of HR's best moments and the writing is above average.
Great stories of a great sport........2003-08-22
If the mark of a good book is that it leaves you wanting more, then that's what we have here. Bowen's tales about the great races are very well-done. I especially liked the older races (before my time), and the best of these was John P. Grier pushing Man O'War as no one ever had.
But I wanted more - where is Forego, for example, and all those horses he caught at the wire, like Honest Pleasure and Wajima? I guess I'll have to wait for Vol. 2!
Nice Try.......2001-12-15
I wish I could say that I loved this book. I wanted to love this book, since thoroughbreds and racing history are two of my favorite subjects. The quality of the paper and the photographs are outstanding. The subject matter is of course inspirational, but the truth of the matter is the writing did not live up to its promise. Bowden is obviously familiar with his subject, and undoubtedly has many stories to tell, but it all seems to have become jumbled up in his mind. He frequnetly starts talking about one topic (say a famous horse race), then goes off on a tangent (say the horse's owner), leaving the reader to try to figure out what has happened. He also fails to focus on one main theme or point in each of his essays, trying to cram ractrack gossip, the human drama and information about the horses (breeding, training history, previous races, etc.) all into the short space available. The result is that the really interesting, in-depth stuff, the details about the horse and what made him or her truly unique, never get written. I found this book very irritating to read and wish that Bowden had had a good editor around to help him pare down and focus his work. If you are wanting disjointed tidbits and facts, buy the book. If you are wanting to really experience the personalities of the horses and the excitement of the races they participated in try another source.
Splendid overview of racing's greatest hits.......2001-12-03
Racing fans should own this book by the outstanding turf writer Edward Bowen. He provides a comprehensive look at some of the most famous racing moments in the twentieth century, not only the great but the infamous (the 1933 "fighting finish" Kentucky Derby) as well. Great racing moments such as Man O'War's duel with John P. Grier in the 1920 Dwyer Stakes, Phar Lap's famous win at the 1932 Agua Caliente Handicap (his last before dying somewhat mysteriously), Secretariat's 1973 Belmont, Affirmed and Alydar's 1978 Belmont, the triple dead heat 1944 Carter Handicap, and the celebrated Jaipur/Ridan Travers of 1962 are among the profiled.
Bowen has a real feel for the subject matter, and he gives the reader the background of each race and even provides the charts for each race. There are also numerous photographs in this book, which is printed on high quality paper.
Bowen leaves out very few of racing's greatest moments. Two that are omitted are the 1976 Marlboro Cup (Forego barely winning over Honest Pleasure) which Bowen does mention briefly, and the great 1978 Jockey Gold Cup, where Seattle Slew gallantly and unsuccessfully tried to defeat Exceller. There's also a tiny bit of bias in this book, as is expected. Bowen seems a bit defensive in a couple of places with regard to Man O' War and Secretariat. According to him, "polls" supposedly crown Man O'War the greatest horse of this century, even above Secretariat. He doesn't really tells us which polls, of which there is only one that this reviewer is aware of, which the publisher Blood Horse conducted among 7 alleged experts and was published in a book about the top 100 North American racehorses of the 20th century. These "history savvy" experts, it seems to Bowen, know the truth that Big Red I was the best, and never mind the record or recollections of racetrackers and writers who saw both Man O' War and Secretariat and said the latter was greater. Frankly, I put my trust in the recollection of the dean of turf writers, Charles Hatton, who unhesitatingly called Secretariat not only the greatest he had seen but "the greatest horse anybody has ever seen." He saw both horses run, and the panelists didn't. (Furthermore, one of the panelists didn't even rank Secretariat in the top 10, and this was the real reason Man O' War finished ahead. As a result, no racing fan takes the Blood Horse poll seriously.)
But this is a minor quibble in a book full of information and great photographs. This is an ideal coffee table book.

Perfect Reference Dictionary.......2007-08-29
Could not have been more comprehensive for a fast look-up or understanding.
Yes, Van Dale can be (some of its versions are smaller than this) more comprehensive and is the be-all-end-all for the Dutch language but their pricing is also a serious show stopper.
Plan to go to Belgium.......2007-06-26
I have planed a trip to Belgium to visit a friend I met on-line. She speaks Flemish and that is a lot like Dutch. I have been learning a few important phrases from her to use when I am there. The dicrionary has helped me tremendously in translating what she is saying. I have been reading and writing down phrases and trying them out when we chat. So far I am doing real well she says. The dictionary was well worth the price I paid and would recommend it to others.
A solid dictionary for Dutch to English translation........2007-02-08
A reasonably comprehensive dictionary that is best suited to English speakers who need to translate Dutch words. It is more comprehensive than online translations at Babelfish.altavista.com or Systransbox. The English to Dutch section is much smaller than the Dutch to English section, but still adequate for writing letters. Usually gives several definitions and examples of sentances. The examples are valuable because word meaning can change with the context.
My only complaint is it does not contain samples of regular word conjugations. It does have a table of irregular verbs, but I don't know Dutch well enough to know the standard conjugations. Like all language dictionaries, it does not give separate listings for standard variations, a real problem for beginners.
Adequate for Beginners.......2005-09-29
I found this dictionary to be useful up until the time I began an intermediate level language class in the Netherlands. It wasn't quite comprehensive enough, even for in-class assignments. My biggest complaint with it: many of the definitions given in the Dutch to English section were unfortunately not present from English to Dutch, making it great for looking up Dutch words that you don't know, but it left me frustrated when searching for the Dutch equivalent of many English words and phrases. That being said, I think that it is more than adequate to use as a pocket dictionary or for quick references. I use it when I read Dutch newspapers and novels. If you want to go for something with more in-depth definitions, invest in one of the Van Dale dictionaries. Their hefty price is well worth it.
Absolutely the best!.......2004-05-30
This is by far the best English-Dutch dictionary available. It has several significant advantages over any of the others I have seen for sale: 1) It provides the phonetic pronunciation for every word; 2) It provides the gender and how to form the plural for every noun; 3) It's up to date and contains many more recent words and usages; 4) For many entries, it offers useful phrases or idiomatic expressions using the word; 5) For English idioms that can't be translated literally, it often provides an equivalent Dutch phrase. The dictionary is comprehensive, but still a manageable size. It's attractive and the printing is clear and easy to read. Don't waste your time or money buying anything else; this is reasonably priced and worth every penny. I only wish it was still available in hardcover because mine has seen much use.
Customer Reviews:
Epic Fables Tale.......2007-08-11
The fourth volume of Bill Willingham's Fables sees the pace of the story pick up significantly. Once again Fabletown is in jeopardy, this time by mysterious black-suited agents. At the same time a refugee arrives from the Old World: Red Riding Hood. No Fable has escaped from the Empire in centuries, so her arrival stirs tensions in the community. In addition we learn more about Boy Blue's past, the last days of the Fables in the Old World, Pinocchio, and the witches. This is bar far the most action-packed storyline so far.
Bill Willingham's re-imaging of classic fairy tale characters continues to amaze and avoids becoming stale. Another great entry in what is already a phenomenal series.
Demented fairy tales, but in a good way.......2007-06-11
The premise of this wonderful series is to rewrite and expand the world of fairy tales. They characters of which has entered our world fleeing a great evil. Lost of fun, smart and witty, typical american style illustrations for the most part, but nice. Some similarities of premise to the Sand Man series, but not quite as inventive or as extensively research and deep. Start at #1 for the best read.
Excellent Book.......2007-05-13
This was just as advertised and an excellent book. I would purchase from this seller again.
Best volume in the series.......2007-02-26
This volume of Fables is the best in the series. I've read through volume 7 and love the series, but this is the one stands out and is the volume I chose to review. The artwork was fabulous, some editions of Fables have semi-cartooning work and there is a hint of that here, but I found the artwork perfectly matched that of the subject matter. The story arc here hits on several levels, there is the big fight/war sequence which all of us, with the heart of a teenage boy, have been waiting for. The series has been building up to a big battle, and this isn't the big one, bit it'll hold us over until that comes. There is also an emotional element behind each side of the battle, maybe even more so the side of the wooden soldiers.
I find the writing in this series to be unbelievably great. I know some people are turned off because of the subject matter and find themselves lost in the due to unfamiliarity, but I haven't written a thesis on the Brother's Grimm or Mother Goose and I still find the subject matter deep and refreshing and continually interesting.
Long live Fables!.......2006-10-02
This is definately a great volume in one of the best comics series I've read.
In this one, the fables are attacked an army of wooden soldiers sent by the enemy that forced them to leave their fairy tale world and reside our world. A battle is fought, I won't give away much else, but it definately seems that a larger story is developoning in the series. I definately feel the suspense to check out the next volume.
