This book has a great title but little else. I was not inspired and learned very little from the book. Based on this book, if I were responsible for Harvard's AMP Program I'd be distancing myself from Mark Stevens.

It's a better investment to spend your moeny on a bag of jelly beans than to purchase this book. Can I have my time back that was wasted reading this book?

5 out of 5 stars meeting with few executives and professors.......2003-01-08

Poor ratings and skewed reviews by others prompted me to write this review to provide objective information for knowledge seekers.

In my view it is a good book considering the price i paid, reading time, breadth of topics, simplicity and few good examples of how high level concepts could be translated into actions. I felt like spending few hours in the company of professors and executives, what they shared made sense to me and made me collect their words as jewels. Where else could one find synthesized knowledge from people like Michael Porter, Fruhan and other renowned scholars within 190/200 pages? I liked the simple manner in which DuPont and other fundamental financial management concepts are explained. I wouldn't mind recommending it to anyone for casual reading during a 3hr flight. Indeed it is not a text book, should not be taken seriously and may not be permanent part of your collection. The book is NOT for technical person who likes to live in details, nor for one who tends to seek ready-made solutions, nor for one who is interested in structured learning or pursuing graduate degree in management. One finds elements of inspiration and motivation to act, hallmark of good books. The stuff about Harvard or text on cover is more of marketing gimmick but nowhere author claims school endorses his book. There is a clear statement to that fact so don't know what caused the confusion written in other reviews. What matters is that the interviews, wisdom and thought process shared by people is original and real.... writer did not make up those 7 OFP points or market competition strategies. Don't expect a book could make you good manager or reveal secrets of success - there is no formula book.

Bottomline, professors who are Harvard's brain and their executive students from Fortune500/Global2000, .....talk to you in this book. It does not matter whether the book is endorsed by the school or if the writer himself attended the AMP program.....knowledge shouldn't have strings attached to it.

1 out of 5 stars Extreme is Extremely Amateurish.......2002-06-30

I picked up a used set of Extreme Management (book and audio) at a flea market. I should have saved my dollar. The book was laborious reading, bordering on pontification, so I tried the tape. What a mistake. If the amateurish and combative writing style was bad in print, the voice used on the tape made things exponentially worse - a classic case of really bad writing getting worse.

Here's the quick scoop:
1. I checked with Harvard and they did NOT authorize this book.
2. The author did NOT attend the classes he wrote about.
3. The writing style is very reminiscent of pre-canned smoke-and-mirrors business-speak...much verbosity, little content.
4. The author sounds positively angry about something.
5. I was angry, too, only because I wasted a dollar on this junk.

I agree with the jist of almost every reviewer on this page, especially Publisher's Weekly and AudioFile. I should have read the reviews on this site first. Oh well, it was only a buck.

3 out of 5 stars Half of What is Needed to Becoming an Extreme Manager.......2001-12-18

The title was a little over stated. As a business student myself, all of the enclosed information was positive reenforcemnet for what I had already learned and a little more! Some of the quotes in the text were reassuring to the reader of a point well explained. although some of the points explained in the text were over explained and it became "dry" reading after awhile. The author had good usage of business terms, but lacked other examples other then that from Harvard Business school.

The text was by far an ad for the Advanced Management Program and Harvard Business school. It also touched slightly on management from a global arena, when most would know that all businesses are likely to go global. So more information is needed for a non-AMP student to learn how to manage in a global market.

Overall the book was informational, but could not be used as the only form of education for potential managers. Not everyone can afford to go to Harvard, but any business school would be better then just reading this book. Because business school can explain these points better and with more content then the book did.

1 out of 5 stars This is an extreme waste of time...........2001-08-27

This was just an ad for AMP, and more of a collection of accolades than anything. Skip it.

        Book Description

"Weeds are rarely considered a priority despite the fact that all active farmers know that the majority of their variable costs and time are devoted to eradicating them. Even most crop losses due to pests can be traced directly back to weeds, which harbor the pests as secondary hosts. In the Molecular Biology of Weed Control, Jonathan Gressel focuses attention upon the tools of molecular biology that can be used effectively in the science of weed control. Always keeping his perspective congruent with that of the working farmer, Gressel explains how weed biologists and ecologists are beginning to use recently developed tools to control intransigent weed species in modern as well as less developed areas of the world. With his usual candor, Gressel evaluates past efforts, while also exploring future prospects for replacing chemical herbicides with genetic engineering, to improve a crop's ability to compete against its feral cousins for light, nutrients, and water. Like much of Gressel's work, this book should be mandatory reading for all agriculturists and plant scientists, so that they employ and encourage what is truly effective and efficient in meeting one of this century's most critical challenges: maximizing agricultural productivity.

        Book Description

Few subjects have generated as much emotional dialogue around conflicting scientific and policy agendas as the protection and management of Pacific salmon resources. In this major new work, esteemed fisheries expert Thomas Quinn distills from the vast scientific literature the essential information on the behavior and ecology of Pacific salmon, including steelhead and cutthroat trout. Unlike other books that examine only selected life stages, habitats, or species, this book--richly illustrated with beautiful photographs and original drawings--thoroughly covers the complete life cycle, emphasizing common themes and differences among the various species of salmon.

Representing the range of species and geographic regions, Quinn includes examples from classic studies by pioneers of salmon biology and from the most current research to illustrate the important features of salmon life history and behavior and the complex physical, biological, and human factors that affect them.

The Behavior and Ecology of Pacific Salmon and Trout introduces salmon and trout as a group, with a brief description of each species, and compares them to other fishes. The book then follows salmon on their amazing homeward migration from the open ocean, through the complex coastal waters, and upstream to the precise location where they were spawned years earlier. It explains the patterns of mate choice, the competition for nest sites, and the fate of the salmon after their death. It describes the lives of offspring during the months they spend incubating in gravel, growing in fresh water, and migrating out to sea to mature. Quinn emphasizes the importance of salmon to humans and to natural ecosystems and the need to integrate sound biology into conservation efforts.

This thorough, up-to-date survey should be on the shelf of anyone with a professional or personal interest in Pacific salmon and trout. Written in a technically accurate but engaging style, it will appeal to a wide range of readers, including students, anglers, biologists, conservationists, legislators, and armchair naturalists.

5 out of 5 stars Don't ask me, Just read the book..........2006-10-31

I am currently an Undergrad at the University of Washington and had the opportunity to study under Professor Quinn in Alaska for a number of weeks this summer. While the book may not be best suited to sit down and read cover to cover, it is a very valuable reference for academics looking into topics pertaining to pacific salmonids. I can say with certainty that Tom sees writing as a process that is never finished (the art of rewriting), and science is as well. It is unrealistic to try to find a book containing every relevant detail on such a hot and emerging topic as salmon, but this book comes as close as any in recent times.

2 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and dense, yet strangely substance free.......2006-07-28

On the face of it, this text is positioned to become the definitive reference on the state of our understanding of Pacific salmon, a rich and complex topic with huge implications for environmental policy. It is sponsored by the American Fisheries Society, the semi-official academic organization that pays attention to these things. The author is a respected academic with deep understanding of the topic. And the book itself is beautiful. As a coffee table book it deserves four stars. The writing style is accessible, and the text covers many hundreds of current research studies.

So, what's the problem? Like Oakland, there is no there there. Instead of a guided tour through the state of our understanding of salmon, we get what amounts to an unstructured core memory dump. Studies are cited, summarized, and dropped for the next pretty bauble. There is little in the way of integration of the huge knowledge base that is out there. Quinn awkwardly fluctuates between an academic and vernacluar style (in his defense, accessible writing on complex academic topics is hard to do).

But Quinn's most bizarre transitions come when he mentions a a few seminal works on Pacific Northwest salmon extinction, simultaneously genuflecting in their general direction and edging away from their implications. Quinn's conscious avoidance of the issues at the heart of the controversy over salmon extinction is the most troubling part of the text, and the main reason I think this book is unworthy of the subject. There is a reason for this. His research center at the University of Washington is largely funded by the government agencies and electric utilites responsible for salmon extinction in the Columbia river basin. Understandably, it does not behoove Quinn to take a definitive stand on these issues. But it belittles him that he does not openly acknowledge what the issues are, and clearly present the evidence we have.

In approving Columbia River development in 1937, the US Fisheries Comissioner ignored a half-millenium of evidence that dams make salmon go extinct, saying that it was a complicated issue requiring more scientific study. Seventy years later, hundreds of salmon stocks on the Columbia and Snake rivers are extinct, and all are in jeopardy. Yet Quinn apparently believes that the solution is...more scientific study. Basic questions - how big do salmon get? How many did there used to be? What is the evidence that modifying or removing dams will or will not help salmon survive? - is either buried in the detritus of multiple studies, or entirely absent.

The big problem with public policy is that you always have to make critical choices with imperfect knowledge. Inaction in dynamic systems like climate and species ecologies is a choice, and repurposing science as a passive excuse for inaction often guarantees a bad outcome. In his unwillingness to engage controversy, Quinn has, unfortunately, avoided relevance.

        4 out of 5 stars Peter Morrison.......2005-09-11

This is a great resource for people that want to learn about the ecology and behaviour of salmon.

I wish it went a little more into the effects of dams and hatcheries on salmon ecology and behavior.

5 out of 5 stars The Behavior and Ecology of Pacific Salmon and Trout.......2005-08-30

This book is the best modern reference to the ecology of west coast salmon. Quinn makes good use of the advances of the last decade and shows good judgement in selecting topics to discuss. I'm a fisheries biologist writting a salmon book so I know the subject and the difficulty of writing in an engaging and informative manner. I recommend the book highly.
A caution: this book is not for beginners.

3 out of 5 stars Flyfishing the high country.......2001-09-26

As far as a comparison with Geirach's other books, this book and Flyfishing Small Stream are unlike the other books written by John Geirach. The others, such as Trout Bum, Dances With Trout and the rest, are collections of interesting, insightful and sometimes humurous essays on various flyfishing topics. These would be enjoyed by flyfishermen and women as well as those who do not fish at all.

However,Flyfishing Small Stream and Flyfishing the High Country are relatively more technical, "how to" types of books geared more towards those with a pre-existing knowledge of flyfishing. Also, if you do not live near the Rockies or plan on going there soon, High Country would have limited relevance to you. Having said that, I love John Geirach's work, I have read all of his essay compilation books and I just enjoyed those more than what I call the "how to" books.

                Book Description

This thorough presentation of Attic Greek assumes that college students learning the language deserve, from the beginning, full exposure to all the grammar and morphology that they will encounter in actual texts. Each of the forty-two chapters is a self-contained instructional unit, with challenging exercises carefully tailored to reflect the vocabulary and grammar learned to date. The units gradually build up the student's knowledge of declensions, tenses, and constructions by alternating emphasis on morphology and syntax. Readings become progressively more complex and, in the second half of the book, are largely based on actual texts and include unadapted passages from Xenophon, Lysias, Plato, Aristophanes, and Thucydides. Logically organized and remarkably lucid, Introduction to Attic Greek provides students with a strong grounding in the essentials of Greek grammar as well as a substantial body of vocabulary, enabling students to read, on completion of the course, a continuous text with commentary and dictionary.
Included are a concise introduction to the history of the Greek language, a composite list of verbs with principal parts, an appendix of all paradigms, Greek-English and English-Greek glossaries, and a detailed index. The book is also a useful reference work for more advanced students who discover that gaps in their knowledge of basic Greek grammar prevent accurate reading of texts.

4 out of 5 stars Essential for self study........2007-07-18

Because I have to study on my own this answer book obviously is a must. Mastronarde's approach in his textbook is just right for me as I am studying on my own with the answer book.

                5 out of 5 stars A Worthy Grammar.......2007-05-20

I found Mastronarde's Introduction to Attic Greek most helpful in its approach and explanations of important grammatical matters. It is not the kind of book that overwhelms a student with information nor simplifies too much trying to make things ever the quicker and easier. Overall, I found this a very worthy grammar.

5 out of 5 stars A quality language text -- Wish there were more like it.......2007-05-07

As a linguist with a fair amount of experience in Asian languages (Mandarin and Classical/Literary Chinese), I was interested in approaching a language of a completely different nature: Attic Greek. After reading through a number of other reviews, I settled on this book and have been thrilled with my purchase ever since. Mastronarde gets the basic idea that vocabulary you can't effectively use (i.e. words for which you don't understand the associated grammar) is worthless and takes all the necessary precautions to make sure that by the time you learn a new term you know how it's used. The negative reviews I've seen for this book mainly have to do with it's grammar-centric composition (which is viewed as being slow to develop), but if you're going to learn a language with the aim to enjoy it for the rest of your life, why complain about using a text that'll be a little slower in the first two weeks but ultimately leave you with superior understanding?

This is a marvelous book, but I highly recommend purchasing Introduction to Attic Greek ANSWER BOOK as well. Morice's Stories in Attic Greek is another goodie as it allows you to see the language in action once you've covered the basics of declension and conjugation and provides some of the cultural knowledge necessary to fully engage an original text.

5 out of 5 stars outstanding, thorough, and manageable.......2007-03-27

I am at Unit 27, learning Greek on my own. So far: outstanding, thorough, and manageable. As others have noted, the Answer key is invaluable.

The exercises are designed to reinforce what has been presented. While they do stretch the student, they include no surprises, nor items that have not yet been presented.

I've also been using "Morice's Easy Stories in Attic Greek," when I want a break from the straight grammar text, and just do some reading. One could start (with struggle!) Morice's stories after Mastronarde's Unit 18-20 Verb Principal Part mega-review.

Another note. Mastronarde's book seems largely derived (modernized, improved!) from Herbert Smyth's 1920's era classic Greek Grammar. Those who want another perspective on a thorny issue can find Smyth on Google Books or (sometimes) on Ebay.

Finally, a confession. The only part of Mastronarde's book which has truly baffled me is the "Athematic Aorist." Everything else, I get. I don't mean I have perfect recall of all that has been presented, but that, on reading it, I could understand it. Not so the "Athematic Aorist."

But, all in all, this is a very very good Greek grammar text.

5 out of 5 stars Indispensable if you are serious about learning the language.......2006-11-05

If you have just started learning Greek and you think there is an easy way to master it, you should better stop fantasising. This book will never try to convince you that there is such a way. It would not be honest.

That is why you will find lots of grammar here. You will need it. You will appreciate later how clearly the material is presented, especially the notorious irregular verbs. Even after completing this book you will use it as a reference tool. This is one of the reasons why the book is such a good buy.

Another strong point of this book are exercises. They are very well planned and designed to achieve one single aim: to develop proper language structures in your brain. Important hint however: do not buy "The Introduction..." without the answer book. The exercises are not easy and you will need a confirmation that you are doing them properly.

One tiny little drawback. The editor's work could have been done better. It is generally good practice in editing books to use different sorts of type, like bold-faced one. Another idea, which is also not entirely bad (and one could expect that it should be understood by editors worldwide), is to organise the text into clear paragraphs instead of gathering it into big lumps which are not only difficult to read but also will destroy any attempt to find an information quickly. I hope this will be corrected in future editions.

                            Book Description

If you've asked someone the secret to writing efficient, well-written software, the answer that you've probably gotten is "learn assembly language programming." By learning assembly language programming, you learn how the machine really operates and that knowledge will help you write better high-level language code. A dirty little secret assembly language programmers rarely admit to, however, is that what you really need to learn is machine organization, not assembly language programming. Write Great Code Vol I, the first in a series from assembly language expert Randall Hyde, dives right into machine organization without the extra overhead of learning assembly language programming at the same time. And since Write Great Code Vol I concentrates on the machine organization, not assembly language, the reader will learn in greater depth those subjects that are language-independent and of concern to a high level language programmer. Write Great Code Vol I will help programmers make wiser choices with respect to programming statements and data types when writing software, no matter which language they use.

4 out of 5 stars The computer book you'll NEVER read.........2007-07-24

If you're like most IT people out in the workforce today, you've got pressures from all sides - deadlines, keeping current with changes in platforms, hardware, software tools, etc. Gah! It never ends!

So, you pick up these "Write Great Code" books, thinking that you'll be a better programmer.

And it's interesting in a way that you remember when you were just getting into the IT field as a student and later as an employee and maybe now as a consultant or contractor.

But, then you realize that this is like thinking about how your car's components are working while you're driving madly to work on some beltway. Only your skills as a driver can keep you from getting hit by a big semi, not the working knowledge of your V8 engine. Guys who work on their cars on the weekend, know more about them than you do, but hey, it gets you to work and back.

And so, you sigh and put the book down and concentrate on your SQL, or your VB or whatever else keeps you employed.

                            Why?

Because your users and your manager don't care about what goes on at the machine level. They want the deliverables NOW. The efficiency of your code is of no importance to them, though it is to you.

However, with enough discipline and some thought to what you're doing, you CAN make this book work for you, and get an edge over someone else's sloppy code and maybe even save yourself some programming time.

Because this book is for the guys who are the computer counterparts of the greasy-looking guys on the street who could tell you what's wrong with your car, even if you can't.

5 out of 5 stars Lucid explanation of concepts.......2007-07-06

Author has explained low-level concepts lucidly. It is easy on eyes. Basic concepts become very clear. It is one of those 'can't keep down without reading few chapters at a stretch' kind of technical book. Very few books have this edge. Just don't feel like stopping reading it.

Beginners must read this book before attempting to read more in-depth low-level technical books. This book is a must for people who are exposed to high-level languages but have not studied Computer Science.

5 out of 5 stars Great way to understand data flow at the machine level.......2007-05-21

This is a great way to understand data flow at the machine level.

I especially like the part on memory and IO.

5 out of 5 stars Great information... But do you really need it?.......2006-10-26

This is a great book but I have to disagree with the overall viewpoint. I've been doing embedded programming for a while and if that's all I'd ever done I would totally agree that understanding low level concepts helps write better code. However, I also write a lot of code in C#. People who normally use high level languages such as C#, VB.Net, or JAVA are probably not going to benefit much from this book. These languages are so far abstracted from the hardware level that the concepts are hard to apply anywhere. On the other hand, if you still use malloc on a daily basis, you need to read the book :) Anyway, the book is easy to read and I never caught any errors. If you want to learn about computers at a low level, then this is a great book to start with!

                            5 out of 5 stars A must have book.......2006-10-21

Randall Hyde is doing really good job. Every software developer should read it.
