A BOOST TO YOUR FINANCIAL FAITH.......2003-05-26

Often we believe we must keep on waiting until we accumulate a large amount of coin before we can invest. However, Chuck dispells that notion and shows you can start with as little as $5 a day (or 150 dollars a month) and he emphasizes small consistent starts. Remember most successful people had to start somewhere, most people didn't inherit their wealth, you must earn it; Chuck shows you the tools. I suggest you read the book more than once, have work book and plan things. Perhaps, you should open a separate bank account so you can put the 150 per month that won't be touched, but make sure you have an emergency fund somewhere so you won't be tempted to dip into that investment fund.

A Real Kick in the Butt.......1999-02-01

I have read Financial Freedom and the Wealthy Barber in the last few weeks. Financial Freedom was great, straightforward, and focussed. Meant for the small investor, he assumes you are starting with no savings or knowledge of investing. The message is: for $5 a day and an hour per month you can retire very well.

I was excited about saving when I finished this book. He explains why mutual funds are the vehicles of choice, gives detailed information on which funds to investigate further, including telephone numbers and addresses for companies in both the US and Canada.

He also offers a few strategies to use with mutual funds to maximize returns in up and down markets. It was so good I have convinced my book club to read it for our next book.

By the way, I am saving $5 a day. You will too.

I love princeton review series. they are the best best best. I used this book sophmore year to prep for AP bio. I didn't read the whole textbook only up to chapter 25, but this book helped me get a 5. You need to know everything in this book to do well. learn all the diagrams and every vocab. good luck

I would recommend this book to anyone taking the test. I used it to study for the AP exam in 2006 and crammed 90% of the book the day before. I'm really happy with the result because I got a 5 from it. This was the only book I used.

This book is really great just like all of the other princeton review book. I took the AP test yesterday, and just want to point out to everyone that as long as you read this book and do the practice tests, you don't need anything else. It's a great book with great info and great everything. Even though there are some mistakes on the practice tests.

I had a horrible AP bio teacher this past year and I pretty much had to study on my own to learn this stuff. I also bought the AP Bio Cliffs book, but I used that as a review after I finished each chapter in the Princeton one. The Princeton one gives great descriptions and teaches you in essay format, while the Cliffs just gives you bullet points, so the information doesn't quite flow as smoothly. Also, Princeton's "words to know" and quiz questions at the end of each chapter helped me so much! I scored a 4 on the test, which would have never happened had I not got this book!

I basically paid $13 for a 5 on the AP Biology Exam.

At my school, there is no AP Biology course. Instead, there is simply an honors course. A few friends and I, enrolled in that course, decided that we would take the AP Biology Exam. We all bought this book and we all studied. People doubted us, as taking an AP test without the class is often a recipe for failure at our school. In the class, due to an adaptation in the schedule, we didn't even cover plants, protists, fungi, photosynthesis, or respiration. Most of the body systems were left up to us to study, as well.

Fast forward to July 1. Being impatient, I call AP to find my scores. I'm praying for a 3 in Biology, but lo and behold, a 5. How?

The book goes over everything. Every subject that the book could test for it covers. In addition, the tests help prepare for the same kind of questions. I didn't incur the same problems as another reviewer, who said there were incorrect answers, but all the answers are explained and I really did not have a problem. In any case, the AP exam doesn't ask for the correct answer; it asks for the best answer. This book even goes over the experiments, which we didn't even have a chance to do, and thus helped me do well on the essay section even though I hadn't ever done the experiment.

If you are taking the AP Biology Exam, buy this book. With a little bit of work and this book, getting a 5 really isn't too difficult.

This is the first book to be written about a living natural history museum tucked away in a last corner of the Indian Ocean. For men it is an achievement just to stay alive on Aldabra, but for the tortoises and birds it is a paradise. It is one of the few tropical island that remain unspoiled, and was recently the object of the biggest conservation battle of all time.

Tony Beamish tells of a remarkable journey around the island's seventy-mile rim of honeycombed coral, so sharp and spiky that it cut his climbing boats to ribbons. He describes the unique animals and birds that dwell on the sailless and waterless atoll, such as the 80,000 giant tortoises, a population far outnumbering the 3,000 that survive in their only other refuge on the Galapagos Islands; the frigate bird with its seven-foot wingspan; and some of the rarest land birds of the world including the last flightless bird in this region once famous for the dodo.

He also tells of the campaign to save Aldabra, from the threatened construction of an airfield there; of how scientists and conservationists on both sides of the Atlantic, led by the Royal Society and the American Academy of Sciences, triumphantly fought for the atoll that few people had heard of before. He makes a powerful plea for the preservation of a scientific wonder that will remain in danger until the airfield plans are finally scrapped.

Why celestial navigation?.......2007-09-04

With modern GPS navigation now omnipresent, why would anyone want to use celestial navigation? Because it's fun, it teaches some valuable lessons about how celestial bodies can show where you are on the earth's surface, and it could be a useful backup in case of loss of GPS due to dead batteries or loss of satellites. This book teaches the subject in easy to understand language, and with just the right amount of humor. All you need is a sextant (which can be obtained, used, for less than $100) and a nuatical almanac. Since this book was published some free computer programs have become available wthat will let you enter the time and the sextant reading and produce an LOP (line of position) eliminating the need for the almanac. You can practice taking sun shots at home on land, even if you can't see the horizon. In a few hours you can become pretty good at it.

The Beginners Delight.......2006-08-26

Celestial Navigation in a Nutshell is an excellent starter for just about anyone wanting or needing to navigate using celestial references. It is exactly what you need prior to using The Complete On-Board Celestial Navigator : Includes 2003-2007 Nautical Almanac. It is logically laid out and provides practical exercises which will facilitate developing basic skills. Highly recommend.

Examples clearly explained.......2003-08-25

Hewitt Schlereth wrote this book to explain the use of the HO249 tables to fix one's position on the earth using the known positions of the sun, moon, planets, and distant stars. I would also recommend reading this book if you intend to use another method of sight reduction, such as George G. Bennett's "The Complete On-Board Celestial Navigator" (ISBN: 0071396578). Schlereth gives a good introduction to the celestial bodies used for navigation and how to use them.

Schlereth's examples show the relevant tables, highlighting the values used. He makes it clear how to enter the tables correctly every time, and gives a few tips on how to avoid transcription errors when "taking out" the numbers you need.

He begins the book with a little trigonometric fiction -- that we are interested in the angles between the sun, the "position" of the sun on the surface of the earth, and the observer. Of course, this is a bit of nonsense, as another reviewer, Nathaniel Meyers, has pointed out. Schlereth corrects himself in a later chapter, and I think he could have better begun with the story of how the famous Greek philosopher calculated the circumference of the earth thousands of years ago.

The eager student should work through the examples thouroughly. Be on the lookout for the error in transcribing one of the sights in the example of the approach to San Salvador -- the first fully-plotted example.

This book is a good introduction to celestial navigation -- a useful place to start before going on to more advanced sources of information.

Basic celestial navigation.......2002-10-16

I've been sailing the coast of Portugal for a few years now, and have always been curious about celestial navigation. I dicided to buy this book because all experienced sailors i've met always talk about this kind of navigation. I read this book and got the hole picture. It's really very well written for biginners. If you are thinking about starting CN this is the right book for you.

Easy to understand, easy to use!.......2002-08-31

I'm a student pilot (hopefully for not much longer!) and navigation is very interesting to me, not to talk of very important as well. I've heard of celestial navigation as being the ultimate form of navigation and I was interested in finding out more about it by reading various books but each time I did, I had to give up because I did not have the necessary PhD in astrophysics to understand what the author was trying to say.

So, it was with a little trepidation that I approached reading this book by Schlereth and to my pleasant surprise, celestial navigation makes sense! His use of simplified theory may not be to some people's taste but at the end of the day, I'm not studying for an exam, I'm trying to understand what celestial navigation is and how to use it. This book teaches you how exactly to use it and that's all that matters to any good author and should to any good reader. I can now go outdoors with a sextant and the necessary tables and find out where on earth I am, correct theory or no!

Where is the CD?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-08-11

The workbook is meant to be compatible with a cd. The first exercise you are supposed to listen to is a conversation about everyday expressions and circle the expression you hear. Problem is... there is no cd to listen to the conversations!!!!!!! The textbook is well written but not including the cd is really stupid. Why not include the cd or make one available?? Extremely dissapointed with the workbook.

.ram files? Really? Why bother making the files availiable if they are essentially useless? If they were mp3 and I could learn via my player on the go, then I would buy your book. I'm sure the irony is that you didn't make mp3s files out of fear of piracy which might affect sales. Gj.
