PROVEN STRATEGIES FOR ORGANIZING YOUR BUSINESS, MANAGING CHANGE AND LEADING YOUR COMPANY TO VICTORY Many American companies are failing to compete in the global marketplace, and business leaders are all too ready to blame external factors. Management consultant and former union leader Lee Ozley believes that change from within is a far more powerful tool for improving a company's success rate than railing against forces beyond the company's control. In this book, he provides 20 Experience Lessons showing managers and workers how to: *Create a business culture in which everyone, from the mailroom clerk to the CEO, performs to his or her full potential. *Engage workers in change, so they embrace it and not fear it. *Improve communications and personal relationships within the company. *Get management and unions working on the same side instead of competing with each other.

Sound Advice for Leaders.......2006-06-13
Reviewed by Bette Daoust, Ph.D. for Reader Views (6/06)
Everyone has an opinion on how their company should be run and how it should not be run. It does not matter what organization you belong to, the result is generally the same. People need leaders to put order into the business but it is how effective the leaders are that truly makes the difference between a people-centric organization and one that simply dictates how things must be done.
Experience Lessons leads you from the dictator style leadership synopsis to one that is truly people-centric plus everything in-between. This book explains management from many perspectives. Is the person in charge a leader or a manager? Lee has sage advice when it comes to communications, interpersonal relationships, and leadership techniques that are based on reality. His advice is sound and does not skirt on the impossible to implement style of so many other books.
If you are in a position of leading others, this book is a good read to get your feet wet before you go for the swim. Take heed on what Lee has to say about accountability and responsibility and then compare it to your current situation. A book well worth reading and keeping within arm's reach.
Practical advice.......2005-04-22
I found this book to have simple practical solutions that most companies would benefit from implementing. It was easy to read and the lessons taught could be applied quickly. It could have had more detail on how to implement some of the suggestions. Should be read by senior business leaders as I believe we are losing the global business battle.

Richly detailed overview of modern evolutionary thought.......2007-04-14
I have used all three earlier editions of this text for my undergraduate 'Evolution' course (I am a college Professor of Biology) and have witnessed the various changes made over the years. The new version has updated much of the information on molecular evolution; the authors should be commended for their very thorough literature review. With the veritable explosion of research into evolutionary phenomena, this must be difficult indeed! The initial chapter on HIV still remains a wonderful introduction to your typically "human oriented" undergraduate and serves to generate interest in the topic early on. The phlogeny/evolutionary tree chapter was moved earlier to the "Introduction" part of the text; not sure why this was done. It was also nice to finally see mention made of reaction norms in the 'Adaptation' chapter (at last!), but there are still no examples of phenotypic plasticity from the vast botanical literature. The 'Evolution and Human Health' chapter is excellent for the medical student. Rather oddly, the important topic of speciation is near the book's end (Chapter 16) and glosses over the many fine examples from the plant evolution literature (polyploid speciation is virtually ignored, except for two paragraphs on p.159). My students are fascinated by the 'evolution of wheat' story, but don't look for that example of speciation here.
My primary complaint with this, and the preceding editions, is still the overwhelming amount of extraneous detail. How I wish I could use my editorial hand on this one! Does an undergraduate student really need over 20 pages on linkage disequilibrium? Are the final details of QTL mapping really necessary at this level of student education? Do we really need 4 pages on the 'fallacy' of the bell-curve (interesting advanced topic, but...) Also, there is an over abundance on phylogeny and systematics (useful for the future molecular systematist, but probably just confusing to the general biology major).
In any event, a great book, a little overwhelming, but well written and free of errors...I'll probably order the lastest (4th) edition anyway for the next 'Evolution' class...
No what I expected!!.......2006-11-13
Advertisement for this book is misleading. I thought it was the actual book, however its merely a workbook full of vocabulary. Not helpful at all!!! Save your money, you will still need the real book anyway!!
If only Campbell were the author..........2005-11-14
There's not much to say. The book isn't confusing because the material is too technical--it's often confusing because the author doesn't go in enough depth; it's frustrating when a crucial concept is presented, such as Hamilton's Law, but no examples on its applications are put forth. I find myself frequently searching the internet to suppliment this textbook. It also doesn't help that the book doesn't come with a cd-rom, or any additional material, unless you purchase the teacher's edition...reading this textbook makes me yearn for Campbell.
Makes evolutionary biology interesting.......2004-05-04
Evolutionary biology can be extremely tedious for undergraduate students if one insists on teaching the more arcane debates as Fisher versus Shifting Balance. That might be good for a second course for future professionals, but if one starts with such stuff, students will lose all the interest in evolution they came with.
Evolutionary Analysis is interesting, wel-informed and up to date, and is meant for general biologists. It cannot be used as a reference book for neo-darwinian debates, so the better.
horrible.......2004-03-05
Bought this one for Evolution class. It is a horrible excuse for a textbook. Do not buy this book unless it is for a middle school student. If the authors think this book has been written for an advanced audience, then I would suggest that anyone interested in learning evolution not attend University of Washington.

Book Description
The wide sandy beaches, quiet maritime forests, and vast Spartina marshes of the natural Georgia coast create a most spectacular, albeit gentle, Southern beauty. Casual visitors and longtime residents alike have been charmed by this special place. Living with the Georgia Shore provides an essential reference and guide for residents, visitors, developers, planners, and all who are concerned with the conditions and future of Georgia's coastal zone.
Recounting the human and natural history of the islands, the authors look in particular at the phenomenon of coastal erosion and the implications of various responses to this process. In Georgia, as elsewhere in the United States, the future of the shore is in doubt as recreational and residential development demands increase. This book provides guidelines for living with the shore, as opposed to simply living on it. The former requires planning and a wise choice of property or house site. The latter ignores the potential hazards unique to coastal life and may make inadequate allowance for the dramatic changes that can occur on any sandy ocean shore.
Living with the Georgia Shore includes an introduction to each of the Georgia isles, an overview of federal and state coastal land-use regulations, pointers on buying and building at the shore, a hurricane preparation checklist, a history of recent hurricanes in Georgia, an extensive annotated bibliography, and a guide to government agencies and private groups involved in issues of coastal development.

Puget Home Owner's Guide.......2001-01-30
This is an excellent reference for both the home owner and the shoreline manager. I used this book to aquaint myself with the shoreline of Whatcom County, and the littoral drift cells, as well as the coastal hazard areas. The book gives great descriptions of the shorelines on Puget Sound, and the different issues that face current or future home owners.
This book explains the problems associated with development along the sound, and what future problems to expect if you do live on the water. I recommend this if you are looking for a home on Puget Sound, or already have one.

Book Description
This book takes a fun-filled look at the foibles, follies, pratfalls, and unpredictable world of the duck hunter, from the time his alarm rings at 3:00 a.m. until he stumbles into freezing marsh water two hours later, swamping his waders but not dampening his enthusiasm for the sport. Why do duck hunters do it? Sit in driving rain for hours awaiting ducks that may never come? Shiver in freezing boats and blinds in the most inaccessible, not to mention inhospitable, environs imaginable?
Author-photographer Bill Buckley writes about these magic moments with humor and verve, but it is his brilliant color photographs that steal the show. The hapless hunter who watches helplessly as his partner's Suburban backs out of the driveway-and over the gun case that holds his favorite shotgun. Click! The faithful retriever that elegantly lifts its leg and makes a sop of the hunter's blind bag. Click! And the pained expressions on the faces of duck hunters caught in the act of "enjoying" their favorite sport. Click.
Waterfowlers who sometimes question their own sanity can now take heart. "It's all right," Buckley writes, "if you like standing in swamp muck for hours on end. It's okay if your family thinks you're weird. Who cares if your girlfriend diagnoses you as obsessive-compulsive or sadomasochistic?
The important thing is, you're not alone."

Misery Loves Company.......2007-02-12
Boy, does this book bring back memories of all the happily miserable hours spent hunting. Now we need books about fishing, birding, gardening and similar miserable outdoor activities that bring back such happy memories.
A photographic taste of duck hunting .......2007-01-03
Great photos which capture the extemes waterfowl hunters live to persue their sport. I felt the cold, the dampness and excitement of the duck blind in Buckleys photographs. Great book!
It did the job!.......2006-03-01
My husband and a few of my guy friends are avid waterfowlers. These books (Misery Loves Company: Waterfowling and the Relentless Pursuit of Self-Abuse & Don't Shoot the Decoys: Original Stories of Waterfowling Obsession) were purchased as gifts, and so suited the purpose. Huge amounts of relaying aloud of their content was overheard by any and all in vicinity. An obvious indication to the entertaining aspect these books provided. Many a moment was there a reminiscent feel to the reading - of what is actually experienced in the field. Kudos to the authors!
A must have!.......2005-01-12
This book is a must have for any duck hunter! This book reassured my friends and I that we are not the only ones these things happen to!
Full color photographs illustrate of every stage of the hunt.......2003-03-09
Written and illustrated by waterfowler and photographer Bill Buckley, Misery Loves Company: Waterfowling And The Relentless Pursuit Of Self-Abuse is an adventurous and photographic celebration of the successes, trials, and battles against the elements that determined and dedicated waterfowl hunters endure in pursuit of their sport. Full color photographs illustrate of every stage of the hunt, and are enhanced with an informal and descriptive text of what it is like to be out in the wet and the cold in search of airborne game, making Misery Loves Company an enjoyable and mildly humorous giftbook.

Book Description
People who work well with numbers are often stymied by how to write about them. Those who don't often work with numbers have an even tougher time trying to put them into words. For instance, scientists and policy analysts learn to calculate and interpret numbers, but not how to explain them to a general audience. Students learn about gathering data and using statistical techniques, but not how to write about their results. And readers struggling to make sense of numerical information are often left confused by poor explanations. Many books elucidate the art of writing, but books on writing about numbers are nonexistent.
Until now. Here, Jane Miller, an experienced research methods and statistics teacher, gives writers the assistance they need. The Chicago Guide to Writing about Numbers helps bridge the gap between good quantitative analysis and good expository writing. Field-tested with students and professionals alike, this book shows writers how to think about numbers during the writing process.
Miller begins with twelve principles that lay the foundation for good writing about numbers. Conveyed with real-world examples, these principles help writers assess and evaluate the best strategy for representing numbers. She next discusses the fundamental tools for presenting numbers—tables, charts, examples, and analogies—and shows how to use these tools within the framework of the twelve principles to organize and write a complete paper.
By providing basic guidelines for successfully using numbers in prose, The Chicago Guide to Writing about Numbers will help writers of all kinds clearly and effectively tell a story with numbers as evidence. Readers and writers everywhere will be grateful for this much-needed mentor.

The Chicago Guide to Writing.......2005-10-04
This is a required text for a graduate course I have enrolled in for fall term. So far, I have found the book makes understanding numbers easier for those (like me) who did not partake in any major mathematical studies prior to a statistics based course.
dry numbers.......2005-09-24
of course useful and informative, but just a little too dry, heavy and complicated for non-experts.
Competent guide for the quantitative writer........2005-06-25
This is a non-nonsense, practical guide to writing with numbers - something that lots of people do without even realizing it, and often do badly.
This book is aimed at a variety of different audiences. It will help anyone writing at the level of a newspaper story. Miller suggests a variety of ways to avoid basic blunders and gaffes. Avoiding errors isn't enough, though, so Miller suggests a variety of ways to bring the meaning and importance of the values to life for a reader - and that's what the exercise was really about. One of her strongest techniques is "GEE", for Generalizations, Examples, and Exceptions. She presents a number of cases that show the general rule expressed by the numbers, specific and representative cases, then the "truth in advertising," the gotchas and caveats that refine any broad-brush generality. Come to think of it, that's not a bad technique for other kinds of descriptive writing, either.
Miller extends GEE and her other suggestions to the most rigorous kinds of scientific writing, as well. If anything, bad writing about numbers may be even easier when numbers are so much more critical and have such subtle relationships. It's a bit annoying that Miller refers repeatedly to her other, as yet unwritten book for more advanced statistical topics; I keep getting the feeling that I'm reading only half of something.
That leads me to a few other weaknesses I found in this book. The sections on charts, tables, and presentations are competent enough, but could have been a lot stronger. The charting section is especially weak, and should be supplemented by another text about charting specifically. If this is meant as a reference, to be grabbed when a writer hits a snag, it could have been organized a bit more tightly, in more of handbook style. Still there are a few good tables describing common kinds of numbers (fractions, percentages, ratios, absolute differences, etc) and how to handle them, good for a writer's quick fix.
The one real weakness comes from one of the book's strengths. Miller really does address number users of many levels of sophistication. She does realize that some people need to make sense of milage comparisons and slanted percentages in the news and in ads, but others deal in z-scores, p-values, and wilder exotica. The problem is that the numerical novice and sophisticate are usually addressed in the same sentence, or at least paragraph. This may be a turn-off for people struggling with the basics, i.e. the people most in need of advice.
This is a valued addition to the reference shelf of anyone who presents quantitive information. That's just about every writer, sooner or later. It may help technical illustrators, too, because image and word serve many of the same purposes in presenting information. This should not be your only guide to presenting numbers, but it should be among your tools.
//wiredweird
A nice set of ideas and recommendations.......2005-05-27
This book is a short primer on statistical literacy combined with a style guide on discussing numbers in prose, and through charts and tables. The focus is on numbers that represent data obtained from polls or experiments. The style guide portions are quite basic, are best suited for students, and do not present many different options for presenting data. The parts on statistical literacy, particularly those on presenting data in an intellectually honest manner, are worth reading and rereading for most anyone.
Overall, this guide is a decent addition to the reference collection of anyone who writes about data.

Beautiful book - a wonderful and unique gift........2005-11-29
This book is so different than anything you'll find out there. I bought this as a gift and got rave reviews. The theater box unfolds into a stage, complete with stage sets, paper dolls of the dancers, props and a CD of music from the Nutcracker. It is a great book that parents and children can enjoy together. The art and design of this theater box/book is beautiful and unique. It would make a wonderful gift - it really is one of the best gifts I have some across.
