Customer Reviews:
Great introductory text!.......2006-12-05
Theodore H. Cohn's "Global Political Economy: Theory and Practice" is an excellent primer to the study of international political economy (IPE). This text covers the main theoretical approaches to IPE and provides fairly detailed accounts of several issues such as "International Monetary Relations", debt, trade, regionalism, MNC's, international development and a brief section on globalization. I used this book for an undergrad. IPE course about a year ago and I find myself constantly referring back to it, mostly for an overview of a subject. The most valuable component of this book is the reference section at the end of each chapter. Cohn has excellent sources that are invaluable for those who wish to pursue a certain theoretical perspective as well as a specific issue. These citations were particularly helpful when writing research papers. Overall, this is an outstanding beginners text in the subject of IPE.
Excellent if wordy.......2004-10-02
I have used this book over the past few years in an introductory course on International Politics. The organization of the book is quite ideal for this purpose as the paradigms used in IR (Realism, Liberalism, and Structuralism) are used in the presentation of ways to approach the study of International Political Economy. In addition, there is a useful overview of the Bretton Woods Institutions (IMF, IBRD, etc.) and chapters on IPE topics, such as currency exchange and debt. The only concern that I have had with this text is its growing wordiness, as each edition (now in its 3rd) is released. Undergraduates rarely have the patience for wading through pages of text, particularly on topics such as economics! With that caveat (for which I have only a limited sympathy) I would say the book is one of the best availbable on the subject.
Good Introduction & Reference.......2003-06-17
A great reference and introduction to the topic for students unfamiliar with the terrain (like me).
Despite it's heavy title this text simply and clearly introduces you to the global players and what they do. It then provides an overview of how they are seen by realists (the right), liberals (the free trade proponents), and historical structuralists (the left). It then provides an invaluable overview of major themes in the world economy and offers an impressively unbiased analysis of how people with different perspectives and organizations with different agendas view and respond to these themes.
If you really want to start to understand how global trade is facilitated (and hindered), and are willing to exert the energy to take a deeper look, then use this book to learn about the World Bank, UN (United Nations), IMF (International Monetary Fund), MNCs(Multinationl Companies), Foreign Debt, International Development, Capital Flows and Controls, etc.
Though filled with acronyms and the topics are heavy the book is a surprisingly friendly read. Readers are properly introduced to the international actors and agencies before they are discussed. There is even a glossary at the back in case you forget that SPARTECA is the South Pacific Regional Trade and Economic Cooperation Agreement. =)
While obviously not a casual read, it is a surprisingly captivating read if you have any desire to learn about globalization and the shepparding of the world economy (the shepards still have A LOT to learn).
As with any good book, after reading this book you will be attracted to articles you never even looked at before. Even more amazingly, you will completely understand them.

Book Description
As ideas, goods, and people move with increasing ease and speed across national boundaries and geographic distances, the economic changes and technological advances that enable this globalization are also paradoxically contributing to the balkanization of states, ethnic groups, and special interest movements. Exploring how this process is playing out in Guatemala, this book presents an innovative synthesis of the local and global factors that have led Guatemala's indigenous Maya peoples to assert and defend their cultural identity and distinctiveness within the dominant Hispanic society. Drawing on recent theories from cognitive studies, interpretive ethnography, and political economy, Edward F. Fischer looks at individual Maya activists and local cultures, as well as changing national and international power relations, to understand how ethnic identities are constructed and expressed in the modern world. At the global level, he shows how structural shifts in international relations have opened new venues of ethnic expression for Guatemala's majority Maya population. At the local level, he examines the processes of identity construction in two Kaqchikel Maya towns, Tecpán and Patzún, and shows how divergent local norms result in different conceptions and expressions of Maya-ness, which nonetheless share certain fundamental similarities with the larger pan-Maya project. Tying these levels of analysis together, Fischer argues that open-ended Maya "cultural logics" condition the ways in which Maya individuals (national leaders and rural masses alike) creatively express their identity in a rapidly changing world.

Book Description
This book, the first on industrial relations research methods, comes at a time when the field of industrial relations is in flux and research strategy has become more complex and varied. Research that once focused on the relationship between labor and management now involves a wider range of issues. This change has raised a number of key questions about how research should be done.
The contributors represent four countries and a range of fields, including economics, sociology, psychology, law, history, and industrial relations. They identify distinctive research strategies and suggest approaches that might be appropriate in the future. Among their concerns are the relative value of qualitative and quantitative methods, of using primary and secondary data, and of single versus multimethod techniques.
Contributors: Julian Barling, William Brown, Jan Bruins, Ron Callus, Daniel Cornfield, Rick Delbridge, Ray Friedman, Suzanne Hammond, Jean Hartley, Melinda Kane, Jim Kitay, Thomas A. Kochan, Paul Marginson, Darren McDaniel, Neil Millward, Greg Patmore, Paul Ronfeldt, Jay Siegel, George Strauss, Richard Whipp, Keith Whitfield, William Foote Whyte.

Microbiology text, It helped me........2006-06-22
I like this book. Microbiology is very fascinating to me. Parasites, etc are particularly interesting. If you are assigned this book for your Microbiology class, my advice is to read it and know the information. This book was very helpful.
I also used a study guide "Microbiology Study Guide Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi. This book has awesome questions for studying during the semester and really gets you ready for the exams.
A lot of information....disorganized.......2006-04-03
I taught a basic undergraduate microbiology class using this text book. The students were mostly pre-nursing so we had a clinical focus. My main problem with the text is it is trying to be all things to all people. It tries to present too much information that is scattered all over the text. Frequently, within chapters, students have to jump back and forth to material presented in other chapters and it simply becomes information overload. In addition, some of the study question, especially the clinically oriented ones, ask the students about areas that haven't been adequately covered in the text or assume knowledge that they don't have as yet. Finally, beware the Powerpoint slide presentations. These are also full of errors and need pretty extensive editing.
Great Service!.......2006-03-13
I ordered this book on a Friday for a class that started the following Monday and it was here first thing Monday morning. The book is in excellent condition. I would use this seller again!
Not enough information.......2006-03-10
I believe that the best way to learn science is to fully understand all the concepts. That way, it is easier to remember details and to apply your knowledge. For some reason, less advanced science courses focus on covering the same breadth of information less in-depth, rather than handling fewer topics and putting more effort into understanding. This book follows that trend. While some issues are explained, much more is left up to the reader to simply memorize. Not an ideal textbook, but sufficient.

Terrible!.......2007-07-25
Don't buy this book. The pictures are all from what seems to be a one-week fly-by roadtrip in the summer, and so every spot they take a picture of is flat. That's no help at all. The info they write on each break was probably copied from somewhere else online, and most of it is wrong and outdated. It sounds as if these guys don't even surf.
Not worth the money, go with Bank Wright's classic: Surfing California
Book Description
The Sport of Kings, developed in Polynesia and refined in the paradise of the Hawaiian Islands, is now global, with surfers challenging the waves from Australia to Atlantic City, from Hawaii to Peru, and from South Africa to Malibu. There's nothing like being alone on a board, charging across a waveface, to free oneself from the cares of the workaday world. And there's no other sport that requires so little gear to participate, and yet gives so much in terms of excitement, challenge, and satisfaction.
With its comprehensive text and brilliant full-color photography, The Complete Guide to Surfing clearly and vividly explains the world of surfing. Here is everything you need to paddle out and join in. Veteran surfing writer and California surfing pioneer Peter Dixon takes you step by step through basics such as choosing the right board, reading waves, and paddling out. From there you will learn how to take your first ride and gain experience as an intermediate and advanced surfer. You'll also learn about the subtleties of board design, etiquette on the waves, safety maneuvers, how to deal with wipeouts, and moves to improve your power and grace.
The Complete Guide to Surfing is destined to become the classic guide to the sport for years to come.
Customer Reviews:
watery anecdotes do not make a complete guide.......2003-10-03
My main complaint about this book is it's misleading title. Dixon's anecdotal style of writing had me skimming the fluffy text for bits of information that were actually useful to me. There was information that I needed and my surfing did improve, but the information was sparce and buried in prosaic whitewater. Now, here I am at Amazon looking for another book to answer my basic and intermediate questions about surfing. Thought I'd drop a review by.
Well designed and informative.......2003-06-30
Dixon provides the necessary information on surfing with clear text and pictures. His style varies between anecdotal and concise. However, this book is far from comprehensive. The culture involved requires that this reference be supplemented with various other volumes with differing tacts. I recommend that the reader purchase this and several more prosaic works to get the complete view of the surfing world.
Chicks Dig a Surfer.......2002-09-14
An excellent text on all aspects of surfing.
I would advise that you learn how to swim first though. I did not and it was a bit embarrassing being hauled back to the beach as I was flapping around like a fish out of water.
I now wear water wings while I'm surfing which some what detracts from the image I was going for.
Ride the wild surf.

finally a water skier's bible.......1998-12-17
Finally someone has written a book on the specifics of the proper way to teach a person how to ski from beginner to expert, especially for me a salom course. Now I don't have to go by hear say from people that might be good skiers, but don't know how to teach, and there is a difference. Stop wasting time with on individuals myths of how to ski .
Customer Reviews:
International residential code.......2000-09-19
The new International Residential Code, (IRC), promises to be an extremly user friendly building code for houses. It has all of the aspects of construction including construction, plumbing, electrical, mechanical and even energy codes combined into one easy to use format. There are sketches galore! For those used to dealing with the previous model codes, this code will exceed your expectations for its user-friendly nature. There are some changes to building code requirements to which inspectors and builders are accostomed. The separation between the house and garage is limited to a single layer of 1/2" drywall. The alternative building material such as ICF (insulated concrete form) wall systems and ISP (insulated structural panels) are now inside the conventional aspects of the code. Certain shear wall provisions have changed. Footing design can now rely on an assumed 1500 psf minimum soil bearing pressure. But there are other problems. The seismic map has been hinged to the postal zip code and consequently, several different seismic zones are within a single community. Other problems will certainly be resolved by the code body in the years to come. As ever, changes are slow, but local jurisdictions will surely allow for these changes locally This Item is available at$47 & $55 and I don't know the difference.
Product Description
Replacing the 1998 International One and Two Family Dwelling Code, this code has been updated to reflect the latest technological advances in building design and construction, serving as a companion to the International Building Code.
Among the technical changes are new provisions for prescriptive steel framing and energy criteria. This code also contains energy, mechanical, fuel gas and plumbing provisions that coordinate with the International Energy Conservation Code, International Mechanical Code, International Fuel Gas Code and International Plumbing Code.

Customer Reviews:
A Great Book. .......2007-08-15
We got this book as a gift for our 3yr old daughter, who is soon going to be a big sister. Reading this book reassures her (what we have been telling her all along) that her mommy & daddy would love her and her new sibling just the same. They both would be our favourites. It address the issue that each child is unique and special in their own way, and loved the same by their parents inspite of their differences.
You're all My Favorites.......2007-07-31
This book is a must have for people who have more than one child. I have three and they all enjoy reading this with me. This book came in excellent condition and in two days like they said it would. Thank you!!
Have Three Children? You Need This Book! .......2007-07-23
I have three children, and when my third boy was born, I received this book as a present. I think my two other boys loved hearing the story of how a mom and dad can love their babies all the same even if there are many of them. It is just an adorable book!
The Name Says It All.......2007-03-15
"You're All My Favorites" is a book about sibling rivally, but on a very surface level. Sam McBratney gets to the heart of a child, without bringing in unnecessary thoughts or feelings. Your child will be able to identify with each of the baby bears (or the baby bear that is most like your child) and come to understand that she/he is loved by you because of who she/he is. Your child will learn that your love isn't based on how she/he looks, performs or whatever else...you just love them (one or more). The illustrations are perfect and grab at the reader to really participate in the story. This is one terrific book.
A great book when a new baby comes.......2005-08-07
We got this book when our second child was born. I think it has helped our older child cope with the loss of attention. He can understand that even though he has to share his parents now, it's not because we don't love him anymore or that the baby is our favorite. It's a fabulous book!
