I found it inspiring and at the same time intimidating to contemplate the brilliant, hardworking people who inhabit this book. All of them committed their lives, talents, and fortunes to tackle seemingly endemic and chronic social problems, starting small and eventually spreading their good works throughout their nations and even globally. I recommend the book for anyone trying to improve their communities' health and welfare.

Feel better about the world.......2006-02-25

The book has several good stories about good things going on in the world. It's mostly a collection of anectodal items on people in different countries and the challenges they faces. I was surprised on how sometimes such common sense ideas become revolutionary movements. Because the book covers so many countries and problem solvers you don't find out about the people that came before that failed. Its clear that these people are building on others but just now how.

The book is a great study of characteristics that shape a person to become a leader in a national or regional social justice movement. It is quite interestign how people from separate worlds and cultures have such similar traits.

I recommend the book to those that are looking for any broader discussion on leadership and social justice. We used this for our first book in a book club that we started and it was a good lead to other discussions.

A few good people . . ........2005-09-21

This account of one man's efforts to revise the defintion of "entrepreneur" demonstrates the capacity of what can be achieved from small beginnings. Bill Drayton has created a "consulting" firm that girdles the world. Creator and promoter of Ashoka, a foundation dedicated to social change, Drayton uses a highly selective arrangement to locate and encourage people desiring social change. Their efforts, rarely, if ever, depicted in either mainstream media or even specialty publications, are here explained and endorsed. As is Drayton's unorthodox methods. Yet those methods, and the people adapting them to local conditions, have been demonstrably successful. They need further study and application.

Drayton, through Bornstein's depiction, has redefined the term "entrepreneur" from its narrow economic framework into a broader and more flexible environment. Money "profit" is no longer the basis for evaluation. Instead, how widely can a new idea and its promoter[s] affect betterment of the people shunted aside by pure capitalism? Is the multinational the sole or even the major means for offering employment and economic gain? Must the values implied by major infusions of capital, often with restraints tied to the investment, be limited to what firms successful in developed countries decide? Drayton argues that instead of "top-down" economic structures, change for the better should come about by local initiative. How far this idea has spread is exemplified by the map opening the book. From Brazil to Bangladesh, people with drive, patience and talent have made, and are making substantive changes within their communities, regions and entire nations.

The book provides real examples of people who identified a problem, then set about to improve conditions that had come to be accepted by social inertia. His opening example, that of Fabio Ruiz of Palmares, demonstrates how effective one person can be. Ruiz, living in a depressed area in Brazil, discovered how greatly something most of us take for granted, electrical power, could influence a local economy. Ruiz observed the condition of the rice farmers in the state. A steady supply of water would allow growth of successful crops. Erratic natural supplies, often interdicted by highland farmers, meant turning to groundwater supplies. Groundwater means pumps and petrol-driven pumps were expensive. Ruiz instituted an inexpensive method of distributing electricity throughout the area. The farmers provided the minimal investment and performed much of the labour. As electrification spread, farmers produced steady crop returns, reaching a level that led to marketing co-ops and economic independence. The programme meant dealing with banks, bureaucracy and competiton. Ruiz and his associates doggedly promoted their success, finally seeing it adapted to other regions. It's an object lesson for many rural farmers in the developing world.

Drayton's methods require a draconian approach to assessing ideas, programmes and the people behind them. Once an idea is presented, the obstacles and restraints must be planned for. A good suggestion isn't enough. The people seeking Ashoka's support must demonstrate they can follow through and adapt to changing conditions or outright opposition. From Brazil, through Africa, into the Subcontinent of India and its neighbours, back through Europe and North America, his evalution teams are constantly assessing, inquiring, and selecting those individuals and their plans for improvement. Money, of course, must be stretched to the limit. Government funding is a bane to most NGOs, since too many conditions are generally tied to resource allocation. Drayton's entrepreneurs must demonstrate their proposals are good enough to use with local resources. Only that way can they be launched into a project with Ashoka support. These projects aren't limited to developing countries alone. Bornstein shows how these examples may be applied to any community feeling their social advancement is under restraint. The models are clearly spelled out in detail. The only thing lacking in your community is the individual who can clearly identify the problems and find innovative ways of implementing the solutions. Not a "how to" but "how they did" change the world........2005-09-19

This book has 15 or so case studies on how people, all Ashoka fellows, made significant social impacts on their part of the world. It also spends a significant numbers of pages describing the Ashoka program itself; It is kind of a "cheerleader" for Ashoka which is less interesting than the case studies. The case studies are very detailed and give uninformed readers like me an understanding of how other people have created successful social programs that benefitted their society. If that is what you are looking for, I highly recommend this book.

This concise book is a model of simplicity and clarity. It presents an effective way to locate and identify specific muscles along with exercises to strengthen and stretch them. It highlights muscles that are heavily used and therefore subject to injury in a variety of sports and activities. A first rate resource for athletes and massage therapists.

A useful, easy-to-use guide!.......2005-12-28

I bought this book two years ago for a massage therapy course I was taking, and ended up using it later on in a college level anatomy class. It both cases it was quite useful, and I find myself referring back to it periodically.

Mr. Jarmey divides the muscles into 6 categories:
- muscles of the face, head, and neck
- muscles of the trunk
- muscles of the shoulder and upper arm
- muscles of the forearm and hand
- muscles of the hip and thigh
- muscles of the leg and foot

Can't get simpler than that! He also includes information on each muscle, including origin/insertion, action of the muscle, which nerve controls it, movements that use it, and excercises to strengthen it. Each muscle is clearly and individually illustrated, and shown in its relation to the skeleton. He manages to convey a LOT of information in under 160 pages. This is a great learning aid, and I'm glad I bought it.

This is an amazing book! It has hundreds of photographed, all of water, and all are breathtaking! You got to see it to believe it.

This is the best -most detailed book about hiking around Las Vegas-both in Red Rock and the Mt Charleston area.

He really knows his stuff and has detailed descriptions as well as photos. If you're just starting or serious about hiking this has everything you need!

not for beginners.......2003-05-21

I have hiked a lot in the Vegas area, and the first thing I noticed is that this book is not for first-timers! It is more useful for locating general spots to hike. It is very tough to follow the text and tiny B&W pictures to stay precisely on the trails. See if your library has a copy, or buy one used. It is worth a look and can be helpful.

Book Triumphs Over Several Summits.......2002-11-16

Being a local of Las Vegas I have been to Red Rock Canyon several times. There are limited hiking trails. The author covers the trails, but does much more. There are many scrambles to peaks that without this book would be virtually impossible to get to. Unfortunately, the rangers at Red Rock want to ban this book. I guess they would rather be gambling than doing their jobs. Many rangers don't even know where named peaks are in Red Rock. My advice is to buy this book or visit the author's Web site (same name as the book) and forget stopping at the visitor's center for information.

Hike Las Vegas, but not with this book........2001-03-12

I tried to use this book. However, the route descriptions are poor, and the author seems to have trouble telling north from south. There are too many errors to be typos. The area has some great hiking, and the book points out some good ideas, but be sure to take your topo map and compass! I thought about selling the book on half.com, but I would feel too guilty selling it to someone with less outdoor experience than I have.

High on hiking areas, low on detailed description.......2000-10-07

This book provides instructions for many hikes around Las Vegas not described in other guides. I have hiked many of these trails and always find the guide's desciptions inadequate. In fact, while hiking Bridge Mountain, following the Guide's instructions lead my experienced partner and I into a very dangerous situation. I still use the guide, but know that I will have to use my trail finding experience to augment the book's trail descriptions.

I highly recomment Gala! not only for its content, but also because it gives a great framwork on how to put together an event. Personally, it helped me preparing an 100 people event and I truly can say it great because it showed me how to pull all the elements together.
What's different from other books, it's that Patti Coons explains how important are details while preparing your event.

not worth the money.......2003-01-30

I suppose if you had never planned any kind of event, this book might be helpful. Once you've planned even a kids' birthday party, this book becomes obsolete. The lists are ridiculous; the same information and "hints" are reworded throughout the book to appear "new". For example, there's a monthly list of tasks to accomplish in a year-long planning scenario, and then the same tasks are redistributed and reworded for the shorter scenario; it fills up the book, but one would have to be brain-dead not to be able to condense the year-long format into a shorter list. All in all, it was a waste of money and a waste of time.

It's for fundraisers! Not events! Just fundraisers!.......2001-08-03

When I bought this book I thought it was about planning different kinds of events, fundraisers included. Turns out it's all about fundraisers. Which is fine, but I wish they'd said so ON THE COVER so I wouldn't wasted my money. The info is good for fundraisers, but pretty much irrelevant for any other kind of big event.

OH my. Gala just arrived and as usual the first thing I did was to peruse the cover. The front cover is smashing. The back cover, however, is riddled with typos and awkwardly worded sentences. Apparently, Ms Coons' editor wasn't paying attention during this very special event. If I had been inside of a bookstore, where I could have captured the mistakes, BEFORE I headed to the checkout line, I would have never purchased this book. But alas, I haven't even opened the covers yet to see what's inside. If it's good quality I'll let you know.

Does a good job of explaining how potty training happens.......2007-06-18

I like this book because it explains potty training as a process, beginning when mommy and daddy bring home a potty chair and ending with the transition to big girl panties. It depicts two supportive parents gently helping their daughter to learn to use the toilet and shows that sometimes accidents will happen and that the child will still need to wear diapers at night for a while. It is also relatable for children, beginning with the words, "Ashley is a girl just your age" and describing how she likes to play with toys and do other things that children like to do.

Best Potty Book We Found.......2007-04-12

We bought this book for our 18mo. old daughter to start potty training as she's been showing all the signs of wanting to go on the potty. She took to it immediatley. She loves the pictures and the simple story line that she can understand about a little girl named Ashley. Whenever we talk about going potty she always says "like Ashee", it's so adorable. I'm positive we'll be buying the same book for boys when it comes time for our newborn son to start training. Great Buy!

OK, but not exciting.......2007-01-13

My daughter likes this book, but not a lot. I think it would be better for getting a child started - she was already sitting on the potty and doing her business before we started reading it.

DD found this book at the library and wanted it read to her CONSTANTLY, around the time she seemed to be getting interested/willing to try the potty. She liked it so much I went and bought her her own copy.

She enjoyed other potty books/videos, especially "Once Upon a Potty", but for some reason this one seemed to be the one that did it for her and made the whole idea click.

I think it's well-written and nicely illustrated. Kids can easily identify with the pictures and with the few false starts that Ashley has on the potty, and the questions asked help draw them into the story as it's being read.

DD is 4 now and has been potty-trained for over a year, but still likes to re-read the book on occasion.

I've given it to friends who are going through the potty-training stage, and they've all been happy with it too.

Love this book for my Daughter.......2006-08-26

My daughter really seeems to pay attention when I read this to her and she seems to understand about the potty. I bought this book and the "Too Big for Diapers" book with Ernie featured. She liked the "Too Big for Diapers" book she knew Ernie. She really related to this book because it was about another little girl. I would recommend both, unless you have a little boy then I would a book about a little boy.
