Individual Strategy and Social Structure: An Evolutionary Theory of Institutions
H. Peyton Young Manufacturer: Princeton University Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items:
ASIN: 0691086877 |
Book Description
Neoclassical economics as-sumes that people are highly rational and can reason their way through even the most complex economic problems. In Individual Strategy and Social Structure, Peyton Young argues for a more realistic view in which people have a limited understanding of their environment, are sometimes short-sighted, and occasionally act in perverse ways. He shows how the cumulative experiences of many such individuals coalesce over time into customs, norms, and institutions that govern economic and social life. He develops a theory that predicts how such institutions evolve and characterizes their welfare properties.
The ideas are illustrated through a variety of examples, including patterns of residential segregation, rules of the road, claims on property, forms of economic contracts, and norms of equity. The book relies on new results in evolutionary game theory and stochastic dynamical systems theory, many of them originated by the author. It can serve as an introductory text, or be read on its own as a contribution to the study of economic and social institutions.

Crisp: Leading Honorably: 50 Tips for Effecting Positive Change (Crisp Fifty-Minute Series)
Marlene Caroselli Manufacturer: Crisp Learning ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback Similar Items: ASIN: 0619259043 |
Book Description
The best definition of a leader may be a person who effects positive change. You know many honorable people, but they are not all leaders. You also know or know about many so-called leaders. They are not all honorable people. Depending on the circumstances, a given leader might be called upon to bridge the old and the new, the past and the future, the young and the old, the internal customer with the external customer, the product with the consumer, the corporation with the community, and so on. It seems the times and the circumstances are appropriate for a book that explores becoming a better leader by taking honorable action.

Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems (Advances in Soil Science (Boca Raton, Fla.).)
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1566704596 |
Book Description
Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems provides information on soil processes and the carbon cycle in cold ecoregions as well as the soil carbon pool and its fluxes in the soils of cold ecoregions. Filling a void in this area of soil science, this resource explains soil processes influencing C dynamics under natural and disturbed ecosystems. The soils of the cold region ecosystems serve as a net sink of atmospheric C. However, an increase in global temperature could render them a net source. In the event of global warming, the cold regions ecosystems-arctic, sub-arctic, alpine, Antarctic, boreal forests, and peatlands-will undergo radical changes. Potential environmental change could drastically increase the active soil layer and influence the large C pool found in them. Topics include: soil C pools in different cold ecoregions, the impact of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the soil C pool, the method of assessment of C and other properties of soils of the cold regions ecosytems while focusing on the fate of C in permafrost soils. Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems covers the current and possible future effects of the cold ecoregions soil C pool on the global carbon pool.

MISTAKES IN THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is absolutely nothing more frustrating than to have a book full of mistakes and poor editing. The chapter tests have questions on things that were never even in the chapter, as well some COMPLETELY WRONG ANSWERS to the test questions. Here is just one example:
When I was working on the Chapter 6 test, I got to T-F question #13. It says "When oxygen is not available, facultative anaerobes obtain energy by way of the Krebs cycle." The answer was False, and the answer they gave that would make the statement True was "fermentation" instead of "Krebs cycle". I looked back at the chapter and discovered that it is the OBLIGATE ANAEROBES that derive energy from fermentation, NOT the facultative anaerobes. It's right there on page 95!!
And that's just one example. If things like that are wrong, it made me wonder what else was wrong in the book. So I gave up on it. Luckily, I found a new book that gave me back my sanity -- Homework Helper's Biology. It gives you all the info you need in a clear, concise format.
So if you are looking for a Biology book you can trust, I would stay away from Barron's.
Not a bad book..........2003-02-05

Word Origins ... and How We Know Them: Etymology for Everyone
Anatoly Liberman Manufacturer: Oxford University Press, USA ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 0195161475 |
Book Description
"Millions of people want to know the origin of the words they use. Word columns in daily newspapers and numerous books attempt to satisfy their curiosity. Word histories are usually digested like pills: the user is interested in getting well, not in the chemistry of the prescribed medication. Those who send letters to the Editor also want a straight answer without bothering about how "editors" come by their knowledge. Therefore, they fail to realize that etymologies are seldom definitive and that the science of etymology is intensely interesting. Perhaps if someone explained to them that, compared to the drama of words, Hamlet is a light farce, they might develop a more informed attitude toward philological research and become students of historical linguistics rather than gullible consumers of journalists' pap."--Anatoly Liberman Word Origins is the only guide to the science and process of etymology for the layperson. This funny, charming, and conversational book not only tells the known origins of hundreds of words, but also shows how their origins were determined. Liberman, an internationally acclaimed etymologist, takes the reader by the hand and explains the many ways that English words can be made, and the many ways in which etymologists try to unearth the origins of words. Part history, part how-to, and completely entertaining, Word Origins invites readers behind the scenes to watch an etymologist at work.Customer Reviews:
