Book Description
Neoclassical economics as-sumes that people are highly rational and can reason their way through even the most complex economic problems. In Individual Strategy and Social Structure, Peyton Young argues for a more realistic view in which people have a limited understanding of their environment, are sometimes short-sighted, and occasionally act in perverse ways. He shows how the cumulative experiences of many such individuals coalesce over time into customs, norms, and institutions that govern economic and social life. He develops a theory that predicts how such institutions evolve and characterizes their welfare properties.
The ideas are illustrated through a variety of examples, including patterns of residential segregation, rules of the road, claims on property, forms of economic contracts, and norms of equity. The book relies on new results in evolutionary game theory and stochastic dynamical systems theory, many of them originated by the author. It can serve as an introductory text, or be read on its own as a contribution to the study of economic and social institutions.
Customer Reviews:
only one word: excellent!.......1999-08-03
A wonderful survey of the author's contributions to evolutionary games and their implications for institutional changes. The reader will learn from this book how random perturbation theory of Freidlin and Wentzell is applied to such an increasingly important field in both game theory and macroeconomics. I like chapter 6 "Local Interaction" the most and, of course, the other chapters are also great!

ASIN: 0619259043 |
Book Description
The best definition of a leader may be a person who effects positive change. You know many honorable people, but they are not all leaders. You also know or know about many so-called leaders. They are not all honorable people. Depending on the circumstances, a given leader might be called upon to bridge the old and the new, the past and the future, the young and the old, the internal customer with the external customer, the product with the consumer, the corporation with the community, and so on. It seems the times and the circumstances are appropriate for a book that explores becoming a better leader by taking honorable action.

Book Description
Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems provides information on soil processes and the carbon cycle in cold ecoregions as well as the soil carbon pool and its fluxes in the soils of cold ecoregions. Filling a void in this area of soil science, this resource explains soil processes influencing C dynamics under natural and disturbed ecosystems. The soils of the cold region ecosystems serve as a net sink of atmospheric C. However, an increase in global temperature could render them a net source. In the event of global warming, the cold regions ecosystems-arctic, sub-arctic, alpine, Antarctic, boreal forests, and peatlands-will undergo radical changes. Potential environmental change could drastically increase the active soil layer and influence the large C pool found in them. Topics include: soil C pools in different cold ecoregions, the impact of natural and anthropogenic disturbances on the soil C pool, the method of assessment of C and other properties of soils of the cold regions ecosytems while focusing on the fate of C in permafrost soils. Global Climate Change and Cold Regions Ecosystems covers the current and possible future effects of the cold ecoregions soil C pool on the global carbon pool.

Customer Reviews:
Good Review of Biology.......2004-10-10
This book helped me to understand hard topics in my college biology class such as genetics and heredity. As with all Easy Way books, it's easy to comprehend. I also highly recommend:
The Ultimate Study Guide for Biology: Key Review Questions and Answers with Explanations
ISBN 1933023007 (Volume 1)
ISBN 1933023015 (Volume 2)
ISBN 1933023023 (Volume 3)
These three study guides really prepared me for the kind of questions that were asked on my college biology tests. These four books are great.
good and a little too much information.......2004-06-27
This is a pretty good review book for biology. But it contains a little too much information. I wish it concentrate more on the human body systems because that's what most of the test focus on. Anyway, this book helped me a lot. The end-of-the-chapter questions are good for test reviews. Even my Biology teacher recommend it!
Better than others.........2004-06-13
There is a LOT of information in this book, some of which might be wrong. I didn't read the whole thing, this review book goes into MUCH more detail than other review books I checked out. Saying that it's "Biology The Easy Way" might be a misnomer - it's chock fulla information and just requires a lot of memorization. The diagrams were fairly clear, but there aren't many of them. This is overall a relatively good choice of review texts for biology, but if you think something might be incorrect, check it out somewhere else!!
Biology the Wrong Way!.......2004-05-02
I recently needed to brush up on my Biology. (I had Bio in college.) While the format of this book is really good, there is just one thing I absolutely could not live with:
MISTAKES IN THE BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There is absolutely nothing more frustrating than to have a book full of mistakes and poor editing. The chapter tests have questions on things that were never even in the chapter, as well some COMPLETELY WRONG ANSWERS to the test questions. Here is just one example:
When I was working on the Chapter 6 test, I got to T-F question #13. It says "When oxygen is not available, facultative anaerobes obtain energy by way of the Krebs cycle." The answer was False, and the answer they gave that would make the statement True was "fermentation" instead of "Krebs cycle". I looked back at the chapter and discovered that it is the OBLIGATE ANAEROBES that derive energy from fermentation, NOT the facultative anaerobes. It's right there on page 95!!
And that's just one example. If things like that are wrong, it made me wonder what else was wrong in the book. So I gave up on it. Luckily, I found a new book that gave me back my sanity -- Homework Helper's Biology. It gives you all the info you need in a clear, concise format.
So if you are looking for a Biology book you can trust, I would stay away from Barron's.
Not a bad book..........2003-02-05
I used this book to help prepare for the SAT II Biology test. I found most of it to be fairly helpful and well written; it included some good self-tests with plenty of questions.
I found a mistake in one of the charts, it said the chemical symbol for potassium was 'P' instead of 'K'. Also, I found some of the graphs and illustrations to be somewhat confusing and some of the test questions seemed to include material not covered until a later chapter.
Overall this book was adequate but I would not reccomend it for use by itself.

Book Description
The most famous basketball tournament in the history of college basketball is the Big Five. And the Big Five was played in the most hallowed halls of college play: the Palestra. Now, for the first time, a complete story of this Philadelphia rivalry is revealed.
Robert Lyons offers the story of the Big Five from its very beginnings in 1955. At that time, many of the Big Five schoolsLa Salle University, University of Pennsylvania, St. Joseph's University, Temple University and Villanova Universityweren't even talking to each other, and everyone predicted the tournament would end before it began. Conducting interviews with coaches and playersincluding famed Temple coach Harry Litwack's last interview before his deathLyons offers the play-by-play on the how the Big Five became an institution, and how it was ultimately undone by college basketball's own success.
Lavishly illustrated with photographs of players, teams, coaches, and the Palestra itself, Palestra Pandemonium is an immediate classic, offering a chronicle of the most monumental college basketball tournament. Anywhere.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic read on a unique part of basketball history!.......2002-12-08
This comprehensive and compelling book makes me long for my playing days again. I never followed the Big 5 (except for ESPN highlights), but now I am a fan because of it's richness and depth. The rivalries in the Big 5 are fascinating and hearty. This book captures how deep basketball waters run in Philadelphia and how deep collegiate loyalty can be. The author has crafted a rare treat that any fan of sports, history, and life will love. If you want to read about sports in its finest, purest form, then read this book.

Book Description
"Millions of people want to know the origin of the words they use. Word columns in daily newspapers and numerous books attempt to satisfy their curiosity. Word histories are usually digested like pills: the user is interested in getting well, not in the chemistry of the prescribed medication. Those who send letters to the Editor also want a straight answer without bothering about how "editors" come by their knowledge. Therefore, they fail to realize that etymologies are seldom definitive and that the science of etymology is intensely interesting. Perhaps if someone explained to them that, compared to the drama of words, Hamlet is a light farce, they might develop a more informed attitude toward philological research and become students of historical linguistics rather than gullible consumers of journalists' pap."--Anatoly Liberman Word Origins is the only guide to the science and process of etymology for the layperson. This funny, charming, and conversational book not only tells the known origins of hundreds of words, but also shows how their origins were determined. Liberman, an internationally acclaimed etymologist, takes the reader by the hand and explains the many ways that English words can be made, and the many ways in which etymologists try to unearth the origins of words. Part history, part how-to, and completely entertaining, Word Origins invites readers behind the scenes to watch an etymologist at work.
Customer Reviews:
thorough, but a little self gratifying.......2007-06-29
The author of this book is highly knowledgeable about the origins of words and attuned to the many misconceptions non-etymologists may have about the subject. However, the authors love of word origins seems to impede his ability to discuss them in a clear and concise fashion. So many words are presented in every chapter - even the titles of the chapters consist of too many words - that the reader looses track of the topic in that particular chapter. Thorough, but could be organized (and edited) a bit better.
word origins.......2006-11-05
very interesting to really know the origins of the many words and phrases we use in every day language...I sure have more respect for the phrases being used.

Hands away if you are looking for the real Leisure Suit Larry.......2007-08-10
This game is a more or less playable 3D-jump-and-run with childish and not-a-single-bit-cool riddles and tasks. If you are looking for the real Leisure Suit Larry there is nothing better than to play the first three epsisodes. This game is missing all the fun and humor of Al Lowe making these episodes so unique. This game is another example of using a famous name for selling stuff.
