Book Description
Information is seriously undervalued and underused as a corporate resource. The pressures of global competition and a growing dependence on information technology mean that the effective use of information is more important now than it has ever been. This book is a fundamental guide for unleashing information potential, by combining the discipline of information architecture with the power of knowledge management, to drive organizational changes.
Instead of unlocking the potential of information, people are drowning in detail. Current books only approach this subject from an information technology perspective. This book combines techniques from knowledge management and information architecture to provide a layer above the detail - techniques for seeing the big picture.
* Creates a clear picture of an organization and the way it works, by mapping the information and knowledge resource, showing where change is required and providing a plan to achieve it
* Streamline decision-making and action-taking by eliminating frustration and confusion
* Supports an information-based culture by maintaining the right infrastructures and constantly improving the use of the information resource
Book Description
For too long, organizational scientists have not adequately attended to the problems of unethical behavior in organizations. This collection of essays provides the stimulus needed to help move the study of unethical behavior to center stage in the organizational sciences. It does so by posing provocative questions that not only entail a concern for understanding unethical behavior but that also strike at the very core of how and why organizations function as they do.
The book addresses:
* the asymmetries in power and influence created by hierarchies that give rise to ethical problems;
* the tactics that might reduce the effectiveness of improper influence attempts; and
* how the inappropriate use of influence diffuses, for example, through a market.

great study aid.......2007-09-30
Great tool for anyone taking A&P. Easy pictures to follow and great study questions. A must for passing this class.
Anatomy & Physiology Coloring Workbook 8th edition.......2007-01-21
This book was necessary for my schooling. Its good.
great textbook adjunct.......2006-11-27
This book was really useful - the coloring parts are especially good if you are a visual learner. There's also more to it than just coloring in pictures - there are lots of fill-in-the-blanks sections to test your knowledge and review major ideas. This is where the only criticism lies....if you don't have the textbook (or a good knowledge of the material) then some sections will be hard to complete. Answers are provided, however, so overall, it is a really useful book and offers more than you might first assume.
Dissapointed.......2006-08-13
The paper has a wax like feel. It is slippery for colored pencil. There is not enough tooth in the paper to hold the colored pencil. No fun. :(
Great filler and study guide.......2006-07-21
I needed a good 'filler' and study guide for my Anatomy classes and this seems to fill the need beautifully. Not used it yet but will come back after the year starts in Sept. and give an update.
Book Description
It all began with a letter.
In 2002, Dr. Martha Burk, chair of the National Council of Women's Organizations, wrote to the Augusta National Golf Club, host of the prestigious Masters tournament, expressing concern over the club's all-male membership policy and urging it to change.
The resulting firestorm surrounding the club's secret membership roster of high-ranking corporate executives and its refusal to admit women was never really about golf. It was about much more -- becoming the linchpin of a national dialogue about the role of women in society not seen since the Anita Hill-Clarence Thomas debate. And, especially in executive suites and boardrooms, the debate is far from resolved.
Cult of Power is an in-depth account of the broader ramifications stemming from the initial controversy, written by the woman who was its center. Burk lays bare the reasons the closed gates of Augusta National symbolize all the ways women are still barred from the highest echelons of power -- in government, social and religious organizations, and most important, in corporate America -- and why we must change the system. In a stunning rebuttal to the reductionist claim that Augusta National is just about golf or "private association," Burk unveils, for the first time, the extraordinary web of business, government, and philanthropic affiliations of Augusta National members. The list is shocking evidence of the impact and influence the members have and damning proof that there is more going on behind club gates than just a game. It really is a "cult of power."
In dynamic, no-nonsense prose, Burk weaves together anecdotes, documents, and other previously undisclosed material with a discussion of why gender discrimination is still accepted at the highest levels of business and how it affects all working women, from the top tier to the rank and file. Like Susan Faludi in Backlash, Burk addresses the systemic nature of the barriers: barriers ranging from male acculturation to employment laws that don't work to the hypocrisy of corporate diversity initiatives and "awards" for good works.
Cult of Power is an important contribution to our understanding of how the attitudes, rules, processes, and pastimes of corporate America perpetuate an antiquated and unbalanced system. But it also provides real solutions and concrete examples that clearly show what must be done to end gender discrimination and bring about true parity in the workplace. Cult of Power is a rallying call for all women -- a clear-sighted prescription for accountability, meaningful action, and real change.

More than meets the eye.......2005-11-19
I picked this book up out of curiosity. This book far exceeds the fact that Augusta has a "Men-Only" membership policy. This book is very eye opening in large amount of sexual discrimination that is in the corporate world. Martha Burk does extensive research to back up her claims that we still live in a world that accepts and condones discrimination.
It wasn't until the 1990's that the racial barrier was removed from golf with the Shoal Creek Country Club, which was a white only club. When they were due to host the Masters and it became public that it was a white only club, Shoal Creek Country Club then decided to admit others who were not white. Once again that incident happened in 1990.
Burk goes on to discuss general topics of pay differientials, women in levels of business, and a variety of other gender based issues. One topic she really discusses is how exclusionary clubs work in business. For example, if all of the top male leaders are in a say mens only club or organization, they automatically exclude any female leadership of that company when they gather. As we all know much business is done while socializing. If you are limiting your employees in how they can socialize you create barriers.
I really enjoyed reading this book. Another great book on gender differences would be "Women Don't Ask". This book discusses several reasons why women do not make as much money as men do. There are differences between genders and how they are treated in the workplace. Burk does an excellent job of pointing out how exclusionary practices hurt some of the workforce.
cult of power.......2005-09-22
Martha Burk writes an extraordinary book about an extraordinary event - how a simple written request of an "old school" golf club to "let women in" turned into a national debate -- a debate that exposed the stubborn underbelly of sexism in the world of golf and in the world of corporate executives, who refused to challenge the "men only" rule at Augusta, the site of America's Master's Tournament. Burk tells the story with enormous credibility, humility, and wit, warning us all, that even in 2005, women better have some "fight" left in us and we might let out a hearty "fore" before we claim we have won the equity battle. A great read - go Martha!
A great introduction to the ideas of feminist theory.......2005-06-24
Martha Burk's book is easy to read and enjoyable. She makes a clear case for the reality of sex discrimination in a way that is not difficult to understand. The arguement of the book is straigh foward enough that even people who have never been intrested, or believed, in women's rights can appreciate this book while gaining insights into the realities of women's lives in corporate America from a woman who has been there and lived it. "Cult of Power" will not leave you with the feeling of having been lectured to from the one and only correct point of view.
Clear Concepts and Inspiring Call to Action.......2005-06-01
As a young professional activist who came to Washington, D.C. straight out of college, I appreciated this book for several reasons. First, it enhanced my understanding of the complexity of sex discrimination in corporate America. Beyond mere concepts, it gave lucid examples of how to convincingly articulate messages and more effectively advocate on these crucial issues. Finally, the book gave me hope and encouragement by surveying the rising tide of public consciousness and progress achieved - and to be advanced if we keep pushing - toward an end to gender discrimination in our national economy. Because our economy is so intricately linked globally, if we campaign strongly at home, we can change the world for the better.
Fabulous!.......2005-05-06
I am a class representative in the gender discrimination class action that was filed against Merrill Lynch in 1997 and am well aware of that "cult of power." As the only class representative who was still employed at the time of filing, I found out quite readily and very painfully how obstinate the corporate culture on Wall Street can be. This book is beautifully written and articulate. From the start it draws you in and very succinctly explains what is happening. It is one of those books that really is hard to put down because of the substance Dr. Burk provides. Not only does she convey the truth about the workplace for women but she offers well thought out suggestions for change. Having spent more than the past decade trying to impart these thoughts to others without the benefit of someone of her position and the research that she illuminates, I am quite grateful that I can now refer people to Dr. Burk's book. If you want to understand why men respond the way they do in corporate America or what types of changes should be made in the workplace to make it better for everyone, this is a must read. Thank you Dr. Burk!

The classic book on the human elements of software engineering. Software tools and development environments may have changed in the 21 years since the first edition of this book, but the peculiarly nonlinear economies of scale in collaborative work and the nature of individuals and groups has not changed an epsilon. If you write code or depend upon those who do, get this book as soon as possible -- from Amazon.com Books, your library, or anyone else. You (and/or your colleagues) will be forever grateful. Very Highest Recommendation.

Buy it as a gift for your Project Manager.......2007-10-12
As a developer, get this book for your boss.
Maybe he will understand why he can't assign Richie and Carolina tomorrow to your team so you can deliver that COM API you promised for the day after tomorrow and you could not finish it because you were stuck in the tar pit of your old legacy app, even after you explained to him there is no silver-bullet and you are plannning to throw one away.
Best regards,
A must read if you're interested in Software Engineering.......2007-09-25
This book is a classic on Software Engineering and one of the most often quoted ones. Fred Brooks experienced first hand the development of a huge-scale software development project, the IBM/360, and has learned valuable lessons which he shares in the book. If you're interested in computer science history you will enjoy the description of the pains and joys of software development some decades ago. The article "No Silver Bullet" included at the end of the book is in my opinion the best essay on Software Engineering ever.
Lean Computing.......2007-09-06
The philosophy of this book is very similar to lean thinking in that:
a. The more hands touching the software, the more time built into the process - partitioning a task builds in extra time (training and communication).
b. Advocates employee ownership relative to the specific work that they do.
c. Speaks to flow (appropriate people touching the product at the correct time) and teamwork (rewards, interaction and stimulation along with team fusion)
d. Speaks to a system of incremental building (improvements)
e. Value is focused on the customer ("happy user" test)
f. Willingness to accept better ideas/processes
g. Team approach to creating value rather than seeking credit; delegating power down and allowing teams to own the process - "...the quality of the people on a project, and their organization and management, are much more important factors in success than are the tools they use or the technical approaches they take."
h. Interchangeable talent
i. Honesty and encouragement in disclosing status
j. Milestone reports (value-added steps)
Someone please publish an updated version.......2007-08-11
Both Dr. Brooks' original and anniversary book is outdated. The original 1975 was written based on experiences in the 60's and 70's while the 1995 anniversary edition is just a reprint along with chapters/articles written in the late 80's and early 90's. As good and fun-reading as classics are, Software Engineering is not like Archeology and Anthropology where past tools and technology are intently studied and cherished. Dr. Brooks time is long gone and he even admits it; so are the experiences he has in the book. Focus should be placed on more current books that take into account things like object-oriented programming, UML, extreme programming, class-generation software (e.g Microsoft Visio) and other modern tool... which are before the time of the Mythical man-month books. Despite some good information in the book I would not spend much time on it.
Dated but interesting........2007-07-03
Most of the the essays in here are now common sense for any project manager. A lot of the information is obviously dated, its now over 20 years old. However, it is interesting for a historical perspective as well as to see how terminology has changed and developed.

Book Description
Following in the footsteps of the massively successful Volume One, the second volume of Michael Chabon Presents. . .The Amazing Adventures of the Escapist collects issues three and four of the likewise popular quarterly series. Among the stories in this volume: Critically acclaimed writer Brian Vaughan (Y: The Last Man) pens "To Reign in Hell" in a classic 1940s spirit, richly illustrated by former Swamp Thing artist Roger Petersen. Marv Wolfman writes "Heil and Fear Well," a shocking and chilling tale of nefarious post-war Nazis in the infamous 1950s EC comics horror style, brought to life by veteran cartoonist Joe Staton and indie stalwart Bob Sikoryak. Also, the mysterious powers of Luna Moth may be up for grabs - is our favorite mild-mannered librarian worthy of them? Kevin McCarthy and Dean Haspiel serve up a tribute to Jack Kirby's 1960s Marvel work in "The Trial of Judy Dark!".

Running out of steam already.......2006-02-10
The first volume, consisting of the content of issues no. 1 and 2 of the comic book series based on the fictional comic book characters from Chabon's novel, The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay, was much more successful than this second installment, taken from nos. 3 and 4. Maybe the "try harder" rule about sequels applies here, too, but the quality of both art and plotting is much lower and the tongue-in-cheek fictional comics history that made the first volume such fun is almost nonexistent in this one. Give it up, guys.
If I bought this, you never sent it to me . . ........2005-08-11
Check your database, Amazon. I didn't buy this book. I bought Vol. 1 and Chabon's Kavalier & Clay for gifts after reading the latter which was one of the best books I have EVER read. The only reason I didn't buy this book too was because I was limiting spending. I'm sure it is excellent.
Wonderful extension of Kavalier and Clay.......2005-01-07
Having read very few comic books before picking up Chabon's first volume of the Escapist, I was completely blown out of the water by the creativity that the authors put into their comic extension of Chabon's "The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay." Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 left, with more of the wonderfully written comic book historical fiction that was peppered throughout the originial. This volume contains the third and fourth issues of the Escapist quarterly comic book, and while the book remains a brilliant addition to Kavalier and Clay, the comics stand on their own in terms of story line.
Overall a fun little book for the train or for an hour or so by yourself.
I must admit that when I recieved my copy of Volume 2 I was a little confused over the cover, as the one pictured here is not the cover that was sent to print. However as a side note, Michael Chabon himself is drawn into the cover at the bottom-right with the alias of "The Puppet-Master."
