The Zapatista movement and its leader Subcomandante Marcos have attracted enormous attention ever since their uprising began in Chiapas, Mexico, in 1994. The movement not only struck a chord inside the country as Mexico was switching to neoliberal economics and attaching itself to the US in the North American Free Trade Agreement, but it rapidly evoked an extraordinary upwelling of political interest and solidarity in the Americas and worldwide. Thomas Olesen explores this phenomenon in the context of globalization and the networking and communications potential of the Internet. What is the infrastructure of the global Zapatista solidarity network? What activities has it engaged in? What enabled it to develop? What are the longer term implications for new kinds of political action and international solidarity? And what can social theory tell us about the new global patterns of social interaction that are emerging?

way too academic.......2006-08-23

This book is primarily an academic exercise in "social movement theory" and only secondarily about international Zapatismo. Olesen makes the odd decision to ignore how the Zapatistas and their supporters describe themselves and how they engage with the political traditions of the left and, instead, describes them with his own, invented vocabulary. For example, instead of providing a sustained discussion of revolution, Maoism, vanguardism, local control, and other political issues of importance, he spends his time elaborating concepts like "injustice frame," "global consciousness," "node of special influence," "latent master frame," "action master frame," and "dominant latent master frame." Olesen creates a sort of parallel universe, which may tell you something about academic social movement theory but will shed little light on international Zapatismo.

His few discussions of the actual politics of the Zapatistas and their supporters are usually insightful, but unfortunately they are few and far between. He also uses the passive voice constantly, which makes his prose particularly ungainly and difficult to get through.

This book was the most inspirational piece of literature I have ever read. It gave me such a wonderful insight on the magical world of soil. I did not realize how many different aspects of soil there were. For example, dirt is what you sweep off the front porch, but soil is the magical glitter that graces this earth. Experiments on Short and Long term memory.......2007-08-13

Eric Kandel's work represents a harmonious mixture of autobiography and a description of research into the workings of the Brain, particularly memory. Having been tormented by childhood memories of Nazi hounding in Vienna in the early years of the second world war, he wanted to find out how these memories are held in the Brain. At the same time, he was also very curious about how Freud's (a fellow Viennese) representation of Id, Ego and Superego mapped to the Brain in terms of neurons and signaling.

He starts off with a history of discoveries in the structure of the Brain, starting with Santiago Cajal's study of the basic form of neurons. Leading to chemical and electrical signaling between the neurons. He dwells into the details of how the electrical signals are converted into chemicals at the synapses while crossing to a neighboring neuron and how the chemicals change back to the electricity after the crossing has been accomplished. He describes his own experiments with short and long term memories. He brings out the distinction very clearly. Short term memory results from strengthening or synapses, while long term memory results from growing of new synapses. Protein synthesis is involved in such a growth and can come only from a conscious effort on part of an individual to commit something to long term memory. This also explains why cramming for an exam does not really result in a long term learning.

He explains clearly why metal illnesses are difficult to diagnose and treat, unlike the other structural damages like tumors, strokes etc. Mental illnesses do result from multiple genes and sometimes the environmental factors as well. The book ends with the Nobel Prize ceremony and a critique of Austria's turning of blind eye towards Hitler's invasion and persecution of Jews.

The beauty of the book is that it is not restricted to just the students and practitioners of Psychiatry. Anyone with some initiation into Basic Sciences at College level can appreciate the work.

This book is certainly written for those that have a keen interest in the biological fundamentals and intricacies of memory. Do not expect much from a psychological or phenomenological perspective. It is a well written book but a lot of neuroscience nuts and bolts.

In Search of Memory: The Emergence of a New Science of Mind.......2007-06-17

An interesting weaving of personal recollection and history that takes the reader on a voyage through some of the discoveries in neural science. The logic of science and twists and turns of fate combine to make for fascinating reading. The book details how the molecular biology of the nervous system is responsible for short term and long term memory, and has been preserved through evolution from primitive snails through human beings, and lays the pathway for possible future understanding and research. On a personal level, the book details how a Jewish boy flees Austria in 1938 as Hitler rises to power, enters medical student with an interest in psychoanalysis and becomes one of the leading neuroscientists of our time, earning a Nobel Prize in the process. Though the book does contain some details of molecular biology, "In Search of Memory" is well worth the time to read.

Is it in his eyes? Is it in his kiss? No, it's in his cells. That's where it is.
For those who have toiled in the field of psychology this book tells the story of where we've been and where we are now. And it tells it well.
It's hard to imagine the author starting with elegant psychoanalytic theory and ending up with utter reverence for a single celled organism. But that's the road science has taken us. The mind is both more and less complicated than we imagined.
In addition to explaining the basics of cell memory, the author recounts his own life experiences, adding humanity to this technical topic.

A fine book with the wrong title.......2006-01-11

I've purchased this book for the second time after my first copy (signed by Vic himself) was lost by a friend. As other reviewers have noted, the book might not deliver quite what one expects. The title may be at fault, and it was possibly chosen by the publisher more than the author. But if you read the book for its insights into 1960s and early 70s sports car racing and rallying, you won't be disappointed. Elford brings an unusual blend of technical expertise, first-hand knowledge, and good writing skills to the task. It can be inspirational to know that the source of this driving advice was the real deal, someone who thundered around the 'green hell' of the Nurburgring fast enough to win it twice, and who earned the nickname 'quick Vic' while dragging around the slowest car (Cooper) on the F1 grid.

Another reviewer objects to there being so much Elford in this book. But instead think of this as a memoir with tons of advice and instruction thrown in. Elford himself (from someone who knew him) was much too modest to tell his story without trying to make it useful to others. In the end it doesn't matter what kind a car you drive. His attitude and insights in high performance driving situations are worth understanding. He may or may not make you a faster driver, but he'll probably make you a wiser one.

Sad Disappointment.......2005-08-14

The title is a misrepresentation. This is not a handbook for driving a Porsche quickly or professionally. I bought this book because in 2 months I am going to drive my rear engined 993 on a F1 circuit. I have no circuit experience, and cannot get any coaching or any circuit experience in the country I live in. Since this is a rear engined car which I have little experience with I was particularly wanting some tips particular to rear engined cars. There is nothing in the whole book which is particular to driving Porsches or rear engined cars. The only reason I will not throw this book out is because it has some interesting 1960's and early 19970's Porsche racing pictures (poor quality black and white though). Also to be fair there are some good racing stories. He is undoubtedly a very impressive driver having been successful at the highest levels in rallying and sports prototype endurance racing. A better title would be "My Porsche Racing History". If you want a book on fast driving I would highly recommend Ross Bentley's "Speed Secrets" in place of this book.

Save your money.......2005-06-17

This is more of a "Vic is the greatest driver in the world book" than a "How To" book on high performance driving. If you're looking to read boastful stories about the author then this is the book for you. If, however, you're looking to learn about high performance driving look elsewhere.

Not good enough.......2003-08-08

This book is simply not worth the money. I fully agree with the reviewers who said this book is good for stories ... but useless for teaching you how to drive fast. The practical tips are very few and far between. To be honest, most enthusiasts can give you more useful pointers over a pint of beer than you can get reading this book.

If you want to drive fast: practice in your own car (safely) and get yourself some hands-on teaching. If you want to sit yourself on a couch and hypnotize yourself into thinking you can drive faster, read this book.

The reason I give 2 stars instead of one is because the stories ARE pretty entertaining. And the pictures are better than in Bondurants book ... But come on: that's not why you're thinking about buying this book, is it ?

Wild driving!!!.......2002-09-22

I don't think I'll ever drive my Porsche as enthusiatically as the author has done, but I really enjoyed the explanations of the 911's abilities. A good book for days when you can't get out in your own car.

I can not provide a comment for this evaluation. I mistakenly thought the book was about how to pull maintenance on chain saws. Not a parts manual.Although the manual does seem to be a handy item to have for a repair shop. Oh well.

This book is good for those interested in repairing their own chainsaws. It has good information and good illustrations. The book is not written for those who do not have a mechanical aptitude. The book is more a service manual than it is a learning guide. It covers many different manufacturers of chainsaws.
