Frontiers of Development Economics: The Future in Perspective

Book Description
Completely updated and revised in this eighth edition, Leading Issues in Economic Development, covers the main issues in economic development through professional journal articles by leading scholars. These articles are edited to provide greater accessibility to an undergraduate audience and organized thematically using overview essays along with explanatory notes and comments. This distinctive approach allows for a variety of perspectives while keeping the most important overall themes in sight. This extensive collection of articles and essays is prefaced with an introductory section that covers the measurement of development, recent economic performance of less developed countries, and the discipline of development economics. It also provides historical perspective on how the world divided into rich and poor countries and treatments of international trade, human resources, investment and finance, urbanization and the informal sector, agriculture, income distribution, political economy, as well as development and the environment.
Customer Reviews:
A collection of article extracts on Development Economics.......2006-09-17
This is a book written for students and researchers working in the field of Development Economics. Virtually all areas of the field are covered and most of the most important articles that have been published on the development of the economy are in it. More advanced readers will however notice that some articles that should been in this book are missing. It is nevertheless an incredible help for all those who want to get a good oversight or a good reference in the latest research in Development Economics. The style is naturally very technical, however the authors are helping with comments and case study examples, which makes the understanding of the areas that they cover a lot more easy.
Five stars are awarded for this book, as it really is an excellent anthology for all those involved in the subject of Development Economics.
Good second step in development economics.......2003-03-20
This book is a very good introduction to development economics for those who have some background in economics. The book does assume some prior knowledge of concepts and terminology, as it seeks to address many of the main contemporary issues related to development. There is a definite bias of focus on Third World developing countries rather than transitional or developed countries.
The issues addressed include the more traditional ones (such as poverty reduction, trade policy, population issues, financing issues) coupled with some newer areas of debate (such as the specific role of women in development). Most interesting I found the section on industrial and technological progress, which follows from the classical eocnomics argument that there should be no indsutrial policy. As it is a compilation of arguments, it does not go terribly in depth in any of the subjects, but offers enough references for those who wish to do so.
For the introductory student of development, this is an essential compilation. For the more advanced student, this is great reference and the bibliography is a list of important works.
Wonderful collection of articles.......2002-05-21
I found this book extremely useful for understanding development economics. It provides a variety of different approaches and theories with clear explanations from the editors. A great source that I recommend strongly.
very useful introduction.......2000-12-11
I bought this book on the recommendation of a colleague who teaches development economics and uses the book himself. I am an economist by training, my background is on macroeconomics and international economic relations, and hence there was much that i recognized. One reason I wanted to learn more on development economics is that I am currently involved in work on EU Candidate Countries and economic transition issues. Although these countries are clearly not in the same category as less developed countries (although that phrase has become increasingly meaningless in itself as it covers so many very different countries), I think there could be fruitful cross-fertilization from reading a book on development economics. Certainly there would seem to be a number of issues where the candidate countries share some common ground at least, or where useful lessons could be learned from development economics (institution and capacity building and macroeconomic stabilization, for instance). The discussion on how development economics is different from other disciplines in economics (notably macro-economics) or adds value to it is of course as old as development economics itself. I found this book very useful as a broad and balanced introducion, and even though it sometimes covered familiar ground I think it often did so with a specific slant on LDCs that did add value for me, as did discussion of subjects not usually found in most economics books on social issues such as the role of women. I liked the listings of positive and negative arguments on a number of issues such as what has been achieved incpoverty reduction. I also liked the broad collection of seminal articles that you are unlikely to find elsewhere.
I found the articles and empirical research quoted not always of very recent date, and especially the latter bothered me. In several instances the texts quoted empirical findings from studies dating from the 70s or so. I do not find that very convincing; have there really been no more recent findings for the last 25 years? Also the lay-out of the text was not always very clear or attractive to the eye, and I think there is definite room for improvement there as well.
That said, this is still excellent value for money, and the book is certainly well worth to read for anybody interested in a good introduction on development economics.
excellent tool for any one interested in development.......2000-07-08
Meier's book provides an excellent tool for anyone interested in Development Economics. Most, if not all, of the important development theories and issues have been covered in a clear and concise way. Amongst the contributors, many are notable economists and scholars such as: Chenery, Stiglitz, Bardhan, Nurske, Sen, Lewis, Todaro, Krueger, Ranis, Rosenstein-Rodan, Hirschman- to name but a few. This book has truly been the most useful reference tool from my first year to final year as an undergraduate reading development economics. Particularly interesting and useful chapters include: Dualistic Development(Lewis Model etc.), Debt and Aid, Population, Trade Strategy, and an awesome section on Industrialisation and Technological Progress.
A must buy for students of Development!

Book Description
The promotion of liberalized and deregulated markets by bilateral and multilateral aid donors, and by global institutions such as the WTO, has led to significant attention being paid to competition and regulatory reforms in developing economies. The process of reform involves the transfer and diffusion of market models derived from practice and theory in developed countries. However, in developing countries, regulation needs to do more than simply promote competitiveness and consumer interests: it also needs to ensure that the market nurtures development. By rigorously examining the numerous impacts of regulation, this book will help to fill a significant gap in the literature on economic and social development. The book, now available in paperback, draws together contributions from leading experts across a range of disciplines including economics, law, politics and governance, public management and business management. The authors begin with an extensive overview of the issues of regulation and competition in developing countries, and carefully illustrate the important themes and concepts involved. Using a variety of country and sector case studies, they move on to focus on the problems of applicability and adaptation that are experienced in the process of transferring best practice policy models from developed to developing countries. The book presents a clear agenda for further empirical research and is notable for its rigorous exploration of the links between theory and practice. Although there is substantial interest in competition and regulation, as yet there has been relatively little investigation of these issues in developing economies. This book redresses the balance and will be a valuable resource for researchers, academics, teachers and students interested in development economics and development studies. It will also be of great relevance for practitioners and policymakers working in the fields of competition policy and regulatory reform.

Book Description
Scientists, theologians, and philosophers have all sought to answer the questions of why we are here and where we are going. Finding this natural basis of life has proved elusive, but in the eloquent and creative Into the Cool, Eric D. Schneider and Dorion Sagan look for answers in a surprising place: the second law of thermodynamics. This second law refers to energy's inevitable tendency to change from being concentrated in one place to becoming spread out over time. In this scientific tour de force, Schneider and Sagan show how the second law is behind evolution, ecology, economics, and even life's origin.
Working from the precept that "nature abhors a gradient," Into the Cool details how complex systems emerge, enlarge, and reproduce in a world tending toward disorder. From hurricanes here to life on other worlds, from human evolution to the systems humans have created, this pervasive pull toward equilibrium governs life at its molecular base and at its peak in the elaborate structures of living complex systems. Schneider and Sagan organize their argument in a highly accessible manner, moving from descriptions of the basic physics behind energy flow to the organization of complex systems to the role of energy in life to the final section, which applies their concept of energy flow to politics, economics, and even human health.
A book that needs to be grappled with by all those who wonder at the organizing principles of existence, Into the Cool will appeal to both humanists and scientists. If Charles Darwin shook the world by showing the common ancestry of all life, so Into the Cool has a similar power to disturb—and delight—by showing the common roots in energy flow of all complex, organized, and naturally functioning systems.
“Whether one is considering the difference between heat and cold or between inflated prices and market values, Schneider and Sagan argue, we can apply insights from thermodynamics and entropy to understand how systems tend toward equilibrium. The result is an impressive work that ranges across disciplinary boundaries and draws from disparate literatures without blinking.”—Publishers Weekly
Customer Reviews:
Excellent.......2007-06-12
This book is excellent and should be read for those Physicochemical Professors that believe second law can not be taught without calculus. Thermodynamics is a subject demistified in this book.
Superb Science and Art.......2006-11-02
This is one of the few recent books that I am buying for friends. Schneider and (Dorion) Sagan do a marvelous job of explicating the most significant concepts behind non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Their explanation makes the subject both accessible and meaningful - an artful and rare accomplishment. And, as I am finding out, their message is enlightening for even friends with science degrees!
It has been stressed for years how the "entropy law" foretells and mandates a relentless downward spiral towards equilibrium (oblivion). Now read about the other side of the story - how the ongoing evolution of complexity gets its "sustenance" from its ability to destroy energy gradients and thus entropy becomes the essential engine and ally in the evolution of our universe and self-analytical life.
You are a GRS too!.......2006-05-24
After reading the book I added a prefix to my name, GRS - gradient reducing system. Indeed, I am a GRS with around 4 bn year history and helping nature reduce the gradient between 5800K Sun and 2.7K outer space.
If you read Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins, and are wondering why the gene has got to be "selfish", then you must read this book. Its simple, when there is a gradient, nature detests it and finds a way of removing the gradient in most efficient way.
Also, this book gives insights into Ecology and how each species(including us) depends on many other species. It gives a feeling that the eastern concept of one's relationship with the whole universe, is indeed true to some extent in some sense. It also lets us understand why we need to save the rain forests at any cost, if we are indeed looking at long term survival.
Some examples for how nature tries to abolish gradient are exhilarating. After reading this book I got a feeling that Second law of thermodynamics replaces "God".
The rise of complexity in open system with energy flow, information flow is neatly explained using non-equilibrium thermodynamics(NET). Understanding the rise of life at the most fundamental level yet is so thrilling. Some mathematics would have helped but since the book is meant for a layman too, its understandable.
Very impressive effort.......2006-04-11
Works of scientific significance tend to fall into one of two categories: those that present new material, and those that reconfigure existing material into something that is new by virtue of its originality of insight. "Into the Cool" falls decisively into the second category, and Eric Schneider and Dorion Sagan have created a book that is as much concerned with philosophy of science as it is about science. The book seamlessly presents the historical and philosophical evolution of a fundamental principle (the second law of thermodynamics as applied to open systems) and develops the implications of the principle in a staggeringly wide range of contexts. In doing so, the authors have avoided the gratuitous descent into the intentionally obscure that mars so much of "popular" scientific writing, and have given us a work that is engaging, lucid and supremely approachable. Their approach risks repetition of material, and the book is not immune to that criticism. In the book's finest moments, however, the authors are able to exploit that repetition by presenting their material in a variety of contexts that collectively support the validity of their argument. In the section on economics, for example (economics in a work on thermodynamics!), the authors make a persuasive case for viewing markets as organically derived from, rather than merely analogical to, the implications of the second law. The authors' treatment of this argument requires less in the way of philosophical gymnastics than might be imagined, and their exposition makes the unfolding of the logic seem almost inevitable. Because of the richness of the material, this is a work that demands more than one reading. Fortunately, the warmth and sincerity of the writing make this book a joy, rather than the heavy going that might easily have otherwise resulted. Highly recommended.
a journey of energetic enthusiasm.......2006-04-11
if you are a reader who enjoys a book that brings together information from many different fields of science to assemble them in support of a more general idea then 'into the cool' is a book you.
ultimately this is not a book about science but a story of our micro and macro world for which the formulas and the math and the science are yet undeveloped. however, the thought experiments, analogous and philosophical, are well within the reach of a curious mind out for a scientific reward.
schneider and sagan take you on a journey of energetic enthusiasm during which, at some point, you will find yourself no longer looking in on an idea for having become the very idea yourself.

Harmony of Nature.......2007-01-02
Simpler said then done. Now, this book is my main aikido book. Upon reading you will expand you're mind and take a total different and right look upon martial arts. The ego is discussed here, war, terms are difficult but very good described.
in short, you must have this book. It stands above it all.
For balance in your reading..........2005-12-06
This book addresses the spirit and the connection to all things natural that exists in Aikido. It is a dimension sadly lacking in many Aikido texts. Any student of Aikido should have a copy, and hang on to it... Highly Recommended.
Some ppl will be disappointed.......2005-08-17
This is a book for discussion of science, nature and aikido.
The transmission of O'Sensei philosophi its the true meaning of this book.
The negative point for me is the quality of the papper, not very good quality.
Outstanding.......2004-05-14
This was one of the first books I purchased when I began my journey of study into this art. I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend it. Saotome is one of the few individuals who actually studied with O-Sensei. He details several accounts of working with the founder both in and out of the dojo. He also gives a unique spiritual interpretation of many of the major techniques used in the art and references forces in nature and the universe for comparison. Well written and well founded. A must-read for any serious aikidoka.
Don't waste your money.......2002-12-31
Do you like full page drawings that look like they were done by a child and have no significance? This book has plenty of them. How about pages of photographs that are not only uninteresting but don't appear to be demonstrating anything at all? Got ya covered. How about endless boring drivel? Cover to cover. Atoms spin around, planets spin around, your technique spins around, therefore aikido is in harmony with nature, zzzzzzzz. Get 'Ki in Daily Life' instead.

Customer Reviews:
THIS SEEMS TO BE A GREAT RESOURCE. .......2006-06-29
I haven't actually tried to submit anything using this book but I am going to begin sending out query letters using information from this book. Because I haven't actually used the information in the book I can't say what kind of results it will garner but that would probably depend more on my material and letters than the information in this book. There are a lot of advice articles and I can saw that my letters and approach is going to be much better than it would have been had I not bought this book. I think the book is worth the price that I paid for it for the articles alone much less the contact information for which the book is really intended.
Excellent Resource!.......2005-05-27
All of Writer's Digest resource books are excellent. If you think about it, where else would this vital industry contact information be available? I'm getting irritated with "Quack's" comments on every Writer's Digest review page. He obviously never sent a query or manuscript to an agent (as he probably can't write one to begin with) because I've had a lot of luck sending queries, proposals, and manuscripts to agents and publishers who "say" they aren't accepting new authors, etc. I have one book deal in the works because I sent my proposal to a publisher who clearly stated, "No new authors." So Quack needs to get a life, learn how to write, and stop being such a kill joy. He'll never be a successful writer...or a successful anything. He's just too pessimistic. If you're serious about writing, you need all of the contacts and resources you can get. This book will get you started on the right path.
The Path to Getting Published.......2005-04-21
In today's publishing world, acquiring an agent is perhaps the most difficult task a writer faces - even more difficult than getting an manuscript published. The 2005 Guide to Literary Agents provides essential guidance to those who have a finished and polished book manuscript or script, and who wish to find representation. While this book won't make the process easy, its helpful listings and articles will direct writers toward the best agents for their work.
Unlike many of the Writer Digest Books guides, this one contains valuable information in its articles: "FAQs About Agents"; "Author-Agent Etiquette"; "Agents Share Their Secrets"; "How to Find the Right Agent"; "How Do I Contact Agents"; "The Art of the Synopsis"; and more. Of course, the listings themselves, of over 600 literary agents, constitute the bulk of the book. Each entry contains contact info, what kind of material the agents represents, terms, and, often, recent sales. Near the end, the editors provide a section on writers' conferences, where many authors meet their eventual agents. (Note that many agents do not wish to be listed in this book because of the volume of submissions it generates.)
If you want to get your book published by a major publisher, you must have an agent. Publishers now rely on agents to screen manuscripts for them, to weed out the unprofessional and the boring, so that when you acquire an agent, you've conquered a large part of the battle. Beyond that, however, you'll need an agent who has extensive connections within publishing, who knows exactly which editors like your kind of material, and how to present your work in the best possible light. Finding that agent among the listings here won't be easy, but at least Writers Digest Books will give you a gentle push in the right direction.
Highly recommended for those who already have a polished book manuscript or script. For those who aren't yet ready to find representation, save your money for next year's guide.
don't listen to duck quack.......2005-03-13
I am purchasing this because a friend of mind had last years edition in her library. If you do anything Duck Quack tells you to do, you will be thrown out of any publishing house in America. All of it is rude, crass and will not get you any closer to acheiving your goal. Read this book and many others, take it's advice, and stay within the realm of professional, responsible behavior--then the rest of us will not have to read complaints from editors and publishers about pushy, difficult writers who think they deserve special treatment and don't follow protocol.
The emperor's new clothes.......2005-02-09
In fairness this is a guide to literary agents. No doubt. The catch is the premise that from this book one can pitch his or her's manuscript. Well the pitch can be made but it will not be read. You will get your response with a dear john "your project" card. (They cannot even find the time to write down the title of your book.) Why is this? Why do the agents allow their names' and adresses' in these books. It's vanity, all vanity. Now they have a new gimmick. It's advice. "I'm too busy, have too many clients anyhow, have you tried Writer's Market??? That's the kiss off. Er, please never send me anything again. A few will actually mention that the three chapters that they requested in their advertising blurb and you sent them were disposed of unread. So what to do? Call them up. Call'em. Find out if they want to read your stuff or not. Better yet get on a program of meeting agents and editors. This is all about money, not creativity. Maybe you can bribe a credible editor (not an agent) to read your work. (I know everybody tells you not to do this.) Sometimes you have to succomb to extream measures. You're a creator, be creative. But save your copying dough and your envelopes and the postage and the time and give these agents a call. If they don't have time to take your call they certainly dont have time to read your stuff. Be tough.

A Helping Hand I found.......2007-06-11
I needed guidance after writing my fictional novel, The Skye in June, and this book help soothe my fears that I would never be published. Suggestions and examples of how to write a proposal, inquiry letter and so much industry information are included. Ease your worries if you are planning on being published - or self publish, and read this book.
Book is good, publishing biz is bad.......2006-11-20
After reading several revews, I can say that the problem is not Jeff Herman's book, but the publishing business itself. My comments are really about non-fiction but there is some truth in this for fiction writers as well. I used his book to send query letters, found an agent, my agent sold my book--but the advance is so tiny I can't afford to write the book. I'm single, I'm not going to inherit anything, I'm not a trust fund kid, and my book was apparently deemed less important than a celebrity tell-all. My advice? Be smart if you want to earn a living writing. Follow the example of that writer who spent FIFTEEN YEARS writing a bioghraphy of J.P. Morgan because her advance was so generous. And she lived off of the advance in New York City, no les! Why did she write about J.P.? Because she admired him? Had some experience in investing? Knew him personally? No, no, no. She wrote about him because all the Wall Street guys who will buy the book hoping to become rich like J.P. did are the reason her advance was so large. Publishing is a business, plain and simple.
Help for those who might be helped .......2005-11-11
This guide will be bought by far more people who will not be helped by it , than who will be helped by it. The great majority including myself will look for the magical way to find the agent, the editor who will want and accept their writing. They will learn the right way to do this, the right way to write a proposal. But having learned all that they will probably not succeed in having their manuscript published.
Beyond this , those who can be eternally grateful to Jeff Herman for providing the formula for success, are those who actually will have a book published. For the overwhelming majority of them this will not bring honor, fame, wealth in anything at all like their secret hope and expectation. If not publishing is a disappointment, then publishing may even be a bigger one.
Nonetheless, we all live by hope. This book is clearly written, instructs the fledgling writer on the way to make it in the world.
It is one of the most popular of these guides, and has helped make at least one person's fortune i.e. Jeff Herman.
Take it from a best-selling author of 12 books: You can use this book!.......2005-08-30
Every year or two I buy an updated copy of Mr. Herman's book, and it's always a great investment.
I sell most of my books to publishers, directly. Perhaps 6 of my 12 books were sold to individuals I found in Herman's editions.
Herman's book provides me with an up-to-date listing of editors who can acquire my titles, along with their phone numbers, and topical interests.
I can't tell you how much time his research saves me, especially when I'm shopping an idea for a new project.
If you want to sell something, it pays to have a great, "smart" list, and that's what Herman's book provides.
And you should know this--I sell my books by telephone, first, and then follow-up with written material--contrary to Herman's advice. But then you'd expect as much from the best-selling author of REACH OUT & SELL SOMEONE and YOU CAN SELL ANYTHING BY TELEPHONE!
