Sadly, it was undone by religious intolerance, brutal warfare, and the arrival of the plague as quickly as it rose.

A different kind of analysis.......2005-07-19
I found The Medieval Machine a refreshing examination of the material cicumstances of medieval life, including power sources, agriculture and food, mining, and the environment. I also appreciated Gimpel's fairly 'hard' approach, including many real numbers (e.g. considing the percentage of vegetables consumed and what health problems might arise from that). The sections on general mechanization and science are less good than the others, but not terrible. The book does not try to be sweeping but to focus on a few select topics, and it does this well.
Good history of medieval engineering...but not great.......2004-10-28
The book is divided into 8 chapters, each dealing with a different aspect of medieval industrial development. The first chapter, my favorite, deals with energy sources, mostly windmills and watermills. It is a fascinating essay on the subject.
Another good chapter is on pollution in the Middle Ages. I never considered this a medieval problem but it really was, making this a captivating read.
The reason why I can' give this book 5 stars is that there are way too many in-text quotes that just do fit the passages. Rather than quoting a 13th century German poet who wrote about the plight of the Bavarian forests, Gimpel (the author) should have merely stressed the ecological consequences in his own capable articulation.

What I liked about the book was how it provided a glimpse into the every day life in the Middle ages by describing technological advances. It just opened up that facet of Medieval History that is hardly ever touched on.
Medieval times are usually protrayed as a step backwards from the classical era in terms of technology and sophitication. This book sort of dispells our generic view of the Middle Ages as an age of Pagentry and fairy tales, and shows us how commerce was run during that era. Maybe I'm just a geek, but I found it very interesting.
Deceiving, Deceptive, and Disappointing.......2003-08-09
The first thing you need to know about this book is that it is not really entitled The Medieval Machine. That is the American title given to this French book which was originally published as The Industrial Revolution of the Middle Ages. If you are interested in learnin about medieval machinery and mechanical inventions this, despite the title, is not the book for you.
The second thing that you need to know about this book is that, well, it is not a coherent "book." It is, basically, a collection of loosely related essays about industrial life in the high and late (mostly late) middle ages.
The third thing you need to know about this book is that these essays are not very good. Simply, they are a good representation of typical Romance-language scholarship: a series of non-sequitors riddled with quotations from source material which are not properly cited.
The only reason to buy this book is the essay on pollution and the environment. This book is the only published work (in book form) in English to deal with this important aspect of medieval life. Again, and unfortunately, while the essay is unique, it remains poor. I strongly suggest that you not purchase this book.

Quite possibly THE most boring book ever written. I love history, particularly the middle ages, but this book droned on about topics for up to thirty pages that easily could have been summed up in a page or two. This book is terrible, do not buy it - especially if you are a teacher - Forcing someone to read this book is cruel and unusual punishment.

Using this SAT 2 book and some additional practice tests I scored an 800 on the biology SAT 2. Overall, I thought the review and practice tests were quite useful, but the review might not have been enough without a very strong knowledge of biology.

As indicated, the book is good but not GREAT. Practice tests are OK. The book is good for cramming but it is better to be used with another books as the book misses the details. For basics and cramming , PR is way to go. To study over a long time and get all info, get Kaplan too(PRs classification chapter is good though).
Misleading Focus.......2007-03-21
I used Princeton to study for SAT II Biology this past summer, going through it bit by bit over the course of the school year. As other reviewers have mentioned, the details are excellent and the book is easy to read. However, I made a mistake: I took the practice tests the day before I took the SAT IIs. I realized that Princeton's focus is on the smaller details, rather than the overall concepts and general information that the practice tests revealed the SATs were concerned with. I did well on the exam, but found myself racking my brain for details from my Biology class. There are a few specific areas, such as hormones, which the book helped with, but overall, I feel that I should have used at least on other prep book.
If for nothing else, I recommend the book for its practice tests. I think they're authentic - keeping in mind that the SAT people use some of the same questions from year to year.

I haven't taken the test yet, but I've been using this book to study, along with my biology textbook, for last few weeks. I found it just a little bit confusing the way the author chose to organize it.
Other than that, the writing is very clear. So well done.

This has a lurid title but is a font of wisdom.......2007-06-14
Okay, I know it seems odd to talk about wisdom in connection with a book about fighting.
But the first eighteen pages of the book are well worth the price of admission.
That's because our friend here, like Lofty Wisman, SAS hand to hand instructor, has been in a fair number of fights and has reached the conclusion that being in fights is a bad idea if you can avoid it. Ditto Gichen Funakoshi. Ditto Marc "Animal" MacYoung.
This is a wonderful book for a beginner or an experienced martial artist. If you're a beginner, the book will give you insight into real physical conflicts and what they are like, as opposed to sparring matches with referees.
If you're an experienced marital artist, this is about as entertaining as a book can be; Peyton Quinn has a dry sense of humor and an eye for the sublime and the funky, and the mixture is just plain funny.
Note that his language is pretty salty, which will help convince teen-agers that he knows what he's talking about. The rest of us can tell that he knows what he's talking about just because of the quality of the advice he gives.
The particular self-defense and fighting techniques he favors most aren't the important part of the book. A lot of different sorts of techniques work well for different people. His choices are just that, his choices. Fairbairn made different choices, and those are also good. But it's clear that both men agree that having some techniques that you a very, very good at is much better than being okay at a whole lot of techniques. Both men agree as well that pre-emptive striking is a good idea if a fight can't be avoided.
In my view, the greatest value of this book is its portrait of an ambush attacker; Quinn points out that even though such an attacker may have little in the way of formal martial training, he may still be very effective because of his (unknowing) embrace of Musashi's approach to fighting.
Frankly, Quinn is a Musashi-quoting, Harley-riding bouncer who is the real-life incarnation of the bouncer in the movie "Road House", complete with philosophical musings about the broader implications of fighting and avoiding fights, including his stay out of prison plan.
And that makes for a darned entertaining read.
Peyton does it again and provides a very useful book on the subject of self-defense........2007-04-21
Being the author of several books on the martial arts and fighting, I am always looking for books of exceptional quality to add to my library. If I have a book in my library, it's definitely worth owning. One such book is Peyton Quinn's, "A Bouncer's Guide to Barroom Brawling."
The most important thing to remember when reading this, or any book dealing with self-defense techniques, is that the principles behind the technique are far more important than the technique itself. Once again, Peyton does a great job of this, and you would do well to sit down and read this book from cover to cover several times in order to grasp what he is trying to teach you.
So without further ado, let's get started.
1. The Ambush: Awareness and Avoidance
One of the important points that the author tries to get across to you in this section is that fighting has serious legal and medical consequences and should be avoided if at all possible. Remember, nothing is easy to do unless you're first willing to do it. Also, learning how to avoid a potential conflict is perhaps the most important "technique" that you can learn. It is vitally important and should be considered your first line of defense.
2. The Reality of Fighting
Here are just a few of the items of interest that are discussed in this section.
a. The sucker puncher's strongest assets that he uses are as follows; confidence, experience, competence and tactics.
b. Some of the very real characteristics of "Real Fights" such as; real fights are actually very sloppy compared to the ones portrayed in movies, most fights only last a few second, most fights are decided by punches to the head, most real fights involve some form of grappling, kicking (particularly above the waist) is not very effective in an actual fight.
Now I have to admit that I am not too fond of statements such as the last one that seem to knock the effectiveness of kicks in a real fight. I for one have trained extensively in kicking and have used it successfully many times in "real fights." However, having said that, I freely admit that the point the author is trying to get across here is actually a very good one. Most people not only don't know how to kick properly to start with, but they have no idea on how to apply them practically in a "real fight."
c. The author's observations about the martial arts versus real fighting; Peyton, in my opinion, is one of the more realistic self-defense authors out there today simply because he takes a realistic and practical approach to the effectiveness of traditional martial arts when it comes to the subject of self-defense. Unlike other authors out there that seem to knock any and every kind of formal martial art there is, Peyton freely admits there importance and value not only in self-defense, but also in every other aspect of your life. He does provide some really good "food for thought" in this section and it was a real pleasure to read.
3. The Tool Box
This section starts out with some great advice, "It is more important to learn how to effectively avoid getting hit, than learning how to hit effectively."
The author then describes several different hand strikes and how to execute them. This particular section is really good and offers some very practical and worthwhile advice.
I particularly enjoyed the author's poignant tale of a sparring session he had with a Tae Kwon Do 4th degree black belt. This is quite an amusing and interesting story, and one that you can learn a lot from, if you know how to read between the lines. The author then finishes this section with some more discussion on hand, elbow, and knee strikes.
4. Principles of Defense
The single most noteworthy piece of advice that the author has put into this book is simply this, "The principles and concepts behind the techniques are more important than the techniques themselves," or something along these lines. This is something that I have been saying for at least 20 years, ever since I first started teaching. Several principles of blocking and striking are discussed in this section.
5. Mobility, Stance, Facing, and the Finer Points of Staying Out of Jail
This section covers a lot of ground covering the subjects of proper stance, the use of footwork, and keeping and maintaining the proper distance between you and your opponent.
6. Grappling, Throwing, and Escapes
This section covers a lot of very good information on the subject of grappling and throwing. I really enjoyed the information in this section and it alone is worth the price of this book.
7. Selecting an Appropriate Martial Art for your Personal Study
This I found to be one of the best sections in the entire book. Here the author takes an honest fairly well-informed look at the various martial arts and the numerous factors one should consider when trying to decide which ones to study.
Overall I found Peyton's book to be outstanding and one that I am proud to have in my own personal library. I find Peyton's approach to the subject refreshing and honest and one that I personally hold in high regard.
I strongly recommend that you purchase this book and not only read the words that Peyton has written, but perhaps more importantly the ones that were written between the printed lines.
Some Very Good Material, But Not For Beginners.......2007-01-11
This book is a bit broader than it's title implies. It has some very good self defense advice that extends beyond barroom encounters.
In spite of that, it is certainly not a book for a beginner. It is much better for one who is very familiar with many self defense techniques. The author does cover a few basic moves, but not to the extent that a rookie could benefit much from it. Of course, that is true with virtually any book as practical, hand on training is an essential for anyone seeking competence in self-defense.
The strongest parts of this book are the methods of avoiding legal entanglements (the author's 'I'm not going to prison plan') and awareness and avoidance of violence. Avoiding a bad situation is always the most fool proof self defense plan and this author realizes that.
He also includes some very good strategy and tactics. Once again, these are not likely to be much help to a self defense novice. He is also very good at highlighting effective techniques and critiquing problematic ones.
He does tend to write in street talk language (lots of expletives). It is not nearly as bad as Mark MacYoung, but he still overuses these to a significant degree.
Overall, I recommend this book as a practical guide to defensive tactics.
Peyton Quinn does it again!!!.......2007-01-06
Any one interested in personal protection will need to read Peyton Quinn's books and watch his videos. Peyton has years of experience in traditional martial arts and through his many years as a bouncer in some of the toughest bars in the country, he has learned which techniques work and which ones will get you hurt. I recommended starting with the Bouncers Guide To Barroom Brawling, then an absolute must is Real Fighting.

A great method, but not enough lessons.......2006-06-19
The Pimsleur method is great for learning the basics and sounds of a language. You very quickly learn to say and understand a few things. It feels amazing at first how quickly things start to fall into place. It is good for working on your pronunciation. But... it really doesn't go far enough. In only 10 lessons, you really can't learn enough. This course teaches you how to ask someone if they understand English, how to ask how someone is and how to respond, how to ask where something is (and understand the answer only if it is "here" or "over there"), and then mostly goes on about saying you'd like to have something to eat or drink, when, where and with whom. Finally they teach how to ask what time it is. It oddly teaches the numbers up to 9, except 6 and 7, so you can only understand some of the answers (and only if it's right on the hour). It kind of felt like it was aimed at teaching you to pick up a member of the opposite sex. Perhaps they think that that is the primary reason why someone would bother to learn Swedish, since almost all Swedes speak English very well. ;-)
It includes some very basic reading instruction/practice, which I thought was a good complement. It gives you a basic idea how to pronounce things you might see written down (such as a street name, the name of your hotel, etc.) Reading Swedish is tough for Anglophones, as the vowel sounds are all quite different. They do a decent job of explaining when one vowel might have two different sounds, though I did not find that I got enough practice to really remember it all.
I think that Rosetta Stone makes a good complement to Pimsleur. It adds a fair bit of vocabulary, but it is nowhere near as good as Pimsleur at really testing your knowledge and helping you to remember things. I'm still working my way through Rosetta Stone, but I feel like I'm only remembering a small percentage of what I learn. Because you answer everything in RS via multiple choice, it is easy to get the right answer without really knowing what the words mean.
Overall, I would suggest Pimsleur to any complete beginner at Swedish. It is a great way to get started, though it won't get you very far. I might also suggest that you look at the reviews of the 2003 version of this product, which I believe is nearly identical (but way more expensive), and has a lot more reviews.

I got Pimsleur Swedish from our local library, not here.
The language material is well presented, but extremely limited due to the high level of repetition. The repetition is great for learning, but when you're done with the 5 CDs, you've learned about 50 words. The effect is sort of like Dr Seuss, without the humor.
I appreciate the good timing, which gives the student plenty of time to repeat every sentence. It's also good for practicing intonation. But you need about 5x as many CDs to learn a useful piece of Swedish.
i thought i could never learn a 2nd language.......2006-03-03
This is a great study guide to buy. Each lession is 30 minutes long so i just play them in the morning when im getting ready for school. This is coming from a A-D-D 21 year old that has trouble with memorizing and picking up things quickly. i was so surprised with how easy they break it down. This product is for anyone that thinks they cant do it!
worth it for beginners.......2005-07-09
i'm decent at picking up a new language, so this might be biased: i found this series to be quite useful, in large part because you hear someone speaking the language so frequently during the lesson... i'm on lesson 6 and can at least understand responses when i speak swedish with other swedes... where this fails is the "reading accompaniment" - it is only for getting to know how words sound, and really should also define the word and perhaps even give the user homework to do: i.e., verbs to study, conjugations to practice... overall, for a beginners series, this was very useful and i use it on the plane, in the car... much better than the Rosetta Stone series, where i'd be parked in front of the computer... at least for listening comprehension, Pimsleur's got Rosetta beat.
Dips Your Ties in the Pool of Swedish.......2005-06-05
10 disc set is good for getting your toes wet but is incredibly short and a little too repetitive for my tastes. For example, I didn't need to be told that "klockan nio" was nine o'clock at least fifteen times, I had that mastered after two times. One realizes after completing the discs that not much material has really been covered. On the other hand, it is great for getting to know the flavor of the language and helps with pronounciation. I used it as complement to the Rosetta Stone software and various grammar books I purchased in attempting to teach myself the language. I considered it a good purchase but it is a bit pricey for what you are getting.
Good beginning.......2005-01-31
I have been studying Swedish for about a year and found this program (I had the CD's) very useful, even though much of the vocabulary was familiar. The repetition is great but the best part is hearing the language as it is actually spoken (i.e. dropping the "t" out of "det", the "g" from "jag" and "och" is prounounced "Oh".) The CD's are also quite good about drilling you in the hard-to-get double-falling tone of certain two syllable Swedish words.
I wish I had had this before I went to Sweden last summer.
It is disappointingly short, but definitely worth buying.

I have purchased Pimsleur French on CD in the past, and the sound quality was excellent. The Swedish follows the same format, but the sound quality on the bookchip is extremely poor. It sounds as if the speakers are at the bottom of a well, and is like trying to learn a language when you have a hearing impairment. I don't know whether other Audiobooks have this problem, but it is very disappointing, given they are such a convenient format. And I don't know whether the Swedish on CDs have better sound quality, but it makes me wary of buying bookchips for languages in the future.

I read this book and immediately shared with the leaders around me. Nothing is more powerful than complete transparency. Very well written, the examples are plucked straight out of the real world.
