Book Description

Just as macroeconomic models describe the overall economy within a changing, or dynamic, framework, the models themselves change over time. In this text Stephen J. Turnovsky reviews in depth several early models as well as a representation of more recent models. They include traditional (backward-looking) models, linear rational expectations (future-looking) models, intertemporal optimization models, endogenous growth models, and continuous time stochastic models. The author uses examples from both closed and open economies. Whereas others commonly introduce models in a closed context, tacking on a brief discussion of the model in an open economy, Turnovsky integrates the two perspectives throughout to reflect the increasingly international outlook of the field.

This new edition has been extensively revised. It contains a new chapter on optimal monetary and fiscal policy, and the coverage of growth theory has been expanded substantially. The range of growth models considered has been extended, with particular attention devoted to transitional dynamics and nonscale growth. The book includes cutting-edge research and unpublished data, including much of the author's own work.

This workbook is a very good tool to professors, teaching assistants and students. It provides an excellent support to really understand the different topics covered in Turnovsky's book, that sometimes are really hard to understand quickly. I used this workbook for a course of International Macroeconomics when i was teaching assistant and helped me to explain some points in a very practical way.

This collection of empirical studies focuses on the pressures placed on trust by the internationalizing of economies. Within a single economy and culture, trust emerges with the help of social and clan-like structures in which expectations are aligned through the common ground of shared norms and values based on a socialization process. But as relationships become increasingly international, the challenge of trust-building increases enormously.

The "trust under pressure" condition occurs because traditional cornerstones of trust-building, such as a common language, shared formal and informal institutions, agreed-upon core values, and aligned vision and goals regarding collaborative ventures, no longer underpin interpersonal relationships-person-to-person links that form the core of trust.

While placed under pressure, globalization makes trust all the more critical as geographic distance makes formal control processes expensive, time-consuming, problematic in efficacy, and rife with complexities. This book presents empirical studies that deal with trust under these new pressures. It provides insights about how trust can be built and sustained under uncertain circumstances. It sheds light on specific mechanisms or means by which trust emerges. Moreover, it reveals processes, both conscious and unconscious, that people construct and view to be sound enough as the basis for developing trust-based transactions and ongoing interpersonal relationships.

Each of the scholarly research papers are highly informative. The research is well covered in detail and depth. The book's twelve contributions provide many challenging research questions, and give valuable insights into the complex, subtle nature of trust and trust-building. For example, one chapter concerns how trust improves the economic performance of the firm, in contrast to the usual question of whether trust affects performance.

This is an exceptionally rich and informative work. It merits the attention of all who seek to understand how trust emerges in today's global economy among people and organizations. Very highly recommended.

Biochemistry of Metal Micronutrients in the Rhizosphere focuses on chemical factors and biological activities that control the uptake and translocation of essential metal micronutrients by plants and microorganisms. Emphasis is placed on current proposals describing the roles of microorganisms in controlling the biological activities of metal micronutrients in the rhizosphere. A Calculator and This Book on Every Lab Bench.......2003-10-30

For most of my entry-level biotechnology students, it's not the science, it's the math.

Adults and students in my three-year biotechnology pathway (San Mateo Biotechnology Career Pathway) have weak, incomplete or dated math backgrounds. Dr. Stephenson's "Calculations for Molecular Biology anf Biotechnology" quickly and clearly explains and demonstrates how to make the most common calculations done in biotechnology research and manufacturing.

In a conversational way, that puts users of all levels at ease, the book does a particularly good job of presenting text in small, digestible amounts with practice problems and answers directly following.

For my program, Chapter 1 (Scientific Notation and Metric Prefixes) and Chapter 2 (Solutions, Mixtures, and Media) are excellent reviews and remediation of calculations taught in the first semester's standard lab training.

Other chapters include several sections that are used or could be used as reference for my second and third year students. Some of these include bacterial growth curves and cell culture concentrations (Chapter 3), DNA Quantitation using spectrophotometers and gels (Chapter 5), PCR reactants concentration and preparation (Chapter 8), Protein Quantitation using spectrophotometry (Chapter 10), and Data Analysis (Chapter 12).

One of the things I like best about the book is that there are so many topics presented that my students have proposed several new research ideas utilizing the techniques and calculations presented.

I recommend this book as a reference for technicians, researchers, students, and teachers who work or are training to work in biotechnology labs or manufacturing facilities.

This book is not for the beginner. It shows a lot of different techniques but doesn't really show the basics.

It's obvious Kirby has a superficial knowledge of Jujitsu but even as an introductory book, this lacks depth.

Old-school Ju-Jitsu book........2003-11-03

This was an alright book on the Japanese (vs. Brazilian) Ju-Jitsu system. In the first part of the book, Mr. Kirby does his best to explain the physics behind Ju-Jitsu. I'll admit, I'm not sure how anyone could make that subject exciting, but Mr. Kirby's explaination was kind of dull to me. It seems to me like he explains "ki" as momentum, or kenetic and potential energy. If you dig physics, you might like this part. The good stuff is in the old-school self defense techniques. With a heavy emphasis on throws and locks (mostly to the arm), these moves are good for your basic one-on-one encounter (lots of shots to the groin here, too). While many throws require the use of a gi/jacket, just as many do not, and he end almost all sequenses with a lock of some kind. While this is no where near my #1 choice for a self-defense book, it does have a lot of good stuff in it. On the other hand, the moves themselves doesn't seem to be in any particular order. They don't seem to biuld on one another. The author sort of makes up for this by presenting a graph at the end of the book, showing what defenses can be used for such-and-such attack. Another point I'm not too cool about,as far as self-defense goes, is that plenty of the moves end with the defender on the ground with the attacker, and I think some of the "attacker's" movements aren't particularly realistic. This is OK for the perposes of learning to defend yourself, but is more about the techniques of the art of Ju-Jitsu. I didn't see too much in the way of sport/NHB or philosophy, either. Overall, with the exception of the graph, an unremarkable book. Guys with no grappling background will find it most useful, I think, as an intro.

Great JuJitsu book for beginning and intermediate Jujitsuka.......2003-07-29

Kirby explains the basic small joint manipulations you would expect in a JuJitsu book along with some throws. I like the techniques because they offer an alternative to utilizing potentially more damaging strikes.

I've practiced some of ideas shown in this book in my JuJitsu classes, and they work very well. I recommend that you get a friend to train with so that you can practice these moves; otherwise, you are not as likely to remember them in the event of an altercation.

Great Set of books!.......2007-01-12

I bought this set of books to help me write my own books. They are a great tool that I use almost everyday. These books are a great help in using different words to describe nouns, and to spice up a sentence. The vocabulary builder is great. It has groups of words that are similar in meaning or root words. It has learning quizes after every section. It is very helpful. I am very proud of my increased vocabulary thanks to this. It is a worthy purchase, I am glad that I bought this collection of books. They are easy to use, and are small enough to fit on a bookshelf with ease. The print is small so crack out your glasses if you need them. Other than that I have no issues with these books.

A Must Have Set.......2001-11-13

I had a set similar to this years ago, which became dog-eared & yellowed with constant use. I replaced them with this 3-book set & the Vocabulary Builder is the best part of this set. My husband & I both love learning new words, so we'll often sit & quiz each other from this new set of books. I also use them as quick references in my writing and business ventures. The dictionary is great as an alternative to the official scrabble dictionary (when we get tired of the seemingly made up words that can't be found in any other dictionary). Maybe I'm just strange--I did read dictionaries & thesauruses for fun as a child & teen.
This set is an excellent value for the money & will be referred to & used again & again. No home or office should be without this reference set.

Merriam Webster's Everyday Language Reference Set . . ........2000-06-16

Every home needs to be equiped with certain items. A dictionary and thesaurus are two of those items. When looking to purchase these items I went with a name I trusted, Merriam Webster. I decided to purchase the complete set because I found it interesting that it included a vocabulary builder. My family and I choice a word a day from the informative books and use it as much as possible. We enjoy picking a word from the vocab builder, then looking it up in the dictionary. We use the thesaurus to find similar words, and words that mean the complete opposite. The choices are endless. I have yet heard a word that can not be found in one of the three books. Unlike most thesaurus' this version has almost every word. It was surprising, because often with thesaurus' the choices are limited. This is one problem that I have yet to run into. I plan to purchase a few copies for family members and friends that are graduating in this year. My fiance even mentioned that we need our own set when we get married.

A wonderful story about how Bartholomew the mouse was little and tiny when HE thought he was. But when HE began to believe in himself, he was as big and important as any of the other creatures in the forest. An important message about self image for us all.
