NAVIGATE THE NOISE: INVESTING IN THE NEW AGE OF MEDIA AND HYPE.......2007-02-20
USEFUL FOR AN INEXPERIENCED INVESTOR. PRIMARY POINT IS TO FOCUS ON THE LONG TERM AND DO NOT RESPOND TO DAY TO DAY EVENTS COVERED IN THE MEDIA. SOME USEFUL INFORMATION ON WHICH STOCKS TO BUY AND WHEN. GOOD BUYS ARE FREQUENTLY NOT THE "BEST" STOCKS BUT RATHER THE ONES GETTTING THE LEAST ATTENTION FROM ANALYSTS AND THE MEDIA.
Great!.......2002-03-13
Another great book from Bernstein. This one is more accessible than Style Investing and has some great financial planning tips/exercises. After the last 2 years in the markets many investors should reasses their tolerance and goals and Bernstein gives a nice framework to do that within.
I strongly recommend Richard Bernsteinýs ýNavigate the Noise.......2002-03-12
This readable book explains very important concepts (risk/reward, asset allocation etc.) very well. Serious long-term investors would be well advised to navigate the noise (I would suggest shutting off CNBC as a start), read Richard's book, and then create a diversified portfolio that is expected to help them fund their long-term liabilities (education, retirement etc.) while matching their true risk tolerance.
Terrific Book.......2002-03-06
This is an outstanding book---the best I've read in 3 years. I particularly like the discussion of risk--how the general perception of risk differs form the investors point of view. And how the investor's perception of risk can be misinterpreted by the broker or financial consultant. A great discussion of value verses growth stocks and which do better under which circumstances. I learned alot by reading this book.
Terrific Book.......2002-03-05
This is the best book I've read in several years. It is thought provoking and backed up by data to show which stocks do well and poorly over time. Alot of the information is counter-intuitive--i.e. shows how your gut instinct is often incorrect. I particularly like the book's discussion of risk, and how the conventional view of risk differs considerably for the average investors view of risk. I plan to reread this book soon.

Book Description
In the midst of American corporate attempts to regain competitiveness in both international and national markets, is the human element of importance? How do companies reconcile individual needs with organizational imperatives in the workplace today? The Human Side of Corporate Competitiveness explores the possibilities of corporate strategies which allow companies to be both competitive in the marketplace and compassionate to their employees at the same time. This volume brings together distinguished contributors with varying backgrounds and perspectives to present an innovative and comprehensive resource. They analyze the causes of America's decline in competitiveness and propose strategies designed to improve organizational competence for today's marketplace. The proposed strategies highlight the increasing interdependency at the societal level. Special consideration is given to minimizing the detrimental effects of organizational decisions on: employee morale, the health and functioning of employees and their families, and the social fabric of the worker's community. Using examples of "technoservice" companies and new models of "high involvement" management, these incisive chapters show how employee well-being is frequently a necessary prerequisite in the new age of global competitiveness. This volume will be of interest to human resource, management and organizational psychology professionals, as well as to academics in management, human resources, and industrial relations. "A useful source of compelling information related to the emerging interest in the strategic management of human resources in organizations." --Journal of Management

Book Description
This book presents twenty specially commissioned case studies of farmer participatory approaches to agricultural innovation initiated by non-governmental organizations in Africa. Beginning with a broad review of institutional activity at the grassroots level, the authors set the case material within the context of NGO relations with the state and their contribution to democratization and the consolidation of rural civil society. br br The book raises specific questions about how useful NGOs can be in promoting technological innovation and addressing constraints to change in present agriculture, how effective they are at strengthening grassroots organizations, and how donor pressures influence NGOs and their links to the state.
Book Description
Garden Insects of North America is the most comprehensive and user-friendly guide to the common insects and mites affecting yard and garden plants in North America. In a manner no previous book has come close to achieving, through full-color photos and concise, clear, scientifically accurate text, it describes the vast majority of species associated with shade trees and shrubs, turfgrass, flowers and ornamental plants, vegetables, and fruits--1,420 of them, including crickets, katydids, fruit flies, mealybugs, moths, maggots, borers, aphids, ants, bees, and many, many more. For particularly abundant bugs adept at damaging garden plants, management tips are also included. Covering all of the continental United States and Canada, this is the definitive one-volume resource for amateur gardeners, insect lovers, and professional entomologists alike.
To ease identification, the book is organized by plant area affected (e.g., foliage, flowers, stems) and within that, by taxa. Close to a third of the species are primarily leaf chewers, with about the same number of sap suckers. Multiple photos of various life stages and typical plant symptoms are included for key species. The text, on the facing page, provides basic information on host plants, characteristic damage caused to plants, distribution, life history, habits, and, where necessary, how to keep "pests" in check--in short, the essentials to better understanding, appreciating, and tolerating these creatures.
Whether managing, studying, or simply observing insects, identification is the first step--and this book is the key. With it in hand, the marvelous microcosm right outside the house finally comes fully into view.
- Describes more than 1,400 species--twice as many as in any other field guide
- Full-color photos for most species--more than five times the number in most comparable guides
- Up-to-date pest management tips
- Organized by plant area affected and by taxa for easy identification
- Covers the continental United States and Canada
- Provides species level treatment of all insects and mites important to gardens
- Illustrates all life stages of key garden insects and commonly associated plant injuries
- Concise, clear, scientifically accurate text
- Comprehensive and user-friendly

Very Helpful.......2007-10-03
one shouldn't take this book lightly, it is a large and heavy tome with lots of great information and photos. i think that the author, whitney cranshaw, did a great job in how he presents the information. one bit that i would have liked to have is distribution map. information is given about distribution, but i like to have maps too.
i would have enjoyed even more information on each insect he covers, but that would make the book at least twice it's size. that probably wouldn't work at it is already 656 pages long.
it would also be neat if this author could do books on different regions of our country in this format.

Garden Insects of North America: The Ultimate Guide to Backyard Bugs (Princeton Field Guides)
Excellent reference guide. I'm a Master Gardener and it is frequently used when we either have a question of our own or from a Help Line caller. I liked it enough that I felt I needed my own personal copy for home and consulting use.
Wonderful Book for Any Gardener!.......2007-07-01
This book is truly amazing, and seems to be a very comprenehsive reference. I am still a 'budding' gardener, and all-too-often, I find myself in need of identifying a garden pest so that I can eradicate it properly.
What I love most about this book is that it has pictures of so many different types of the same bug, as well as the different life stages of the bus (for example, it has over 68 different pictures of numerous types of aphids, the different stages, and what the infected plant's symptoms may show). Additionally, the pictures are clearly labeled!
I'm thrilled with this book, and I'm sure I will use it for many, many years to come!
YOU GET YOUR MONIES WORTH WITH THIS ONE!.......2007-04-13
They really don't make one volume books on a given subject much better than this one. Now do keep in mind that one book simply cannot cover every single insect, bug or critter that plague a garden or orchard, but this one comes pretty close. The photographs are wonderful and not only give clear pictures of the adult insect, but also in it's various stages of growth, from egg on up. I am constantly turning to this work for the help I need. Other than using it for my garden and orchard, I also photograph insects and other small creatures and plants for a hobby. Many of these insects are quite difficult to identify and I find myself turning to this volume more and more for initial identification before I grab a more detailed text type book. The written descriptions are quite accurate as is the other information, such as living conditions, geographical locations, life cycle, etc. If you must purchase only one book covering the subject, then this is the one you want. Recommend this one highly.
Best book out there for IDing insects.......2007-01-11
Being a Master Gardener I'm often called upon to identify a garden invader. There are many book available but none have proven adequate. This book does the job well. The photos of the insects in all stages is of great value. This book is divided into sections so that you can research by type of damage or plant being effected. It gives a brief biology lesson and also has a chapter on the "good guys." I'd say this is a must for any gardener. All my friends who have seen it are ordering one for themselves.

Boats with an Open Mind: Seventy-Five Unconventional Designs and Concepts
ASIN: 0071579907 |
Book Description
Why is stitch-and-glue boatbuilding so popular?
Any number of construction methods will produce a beautiful boat. But for the backyard builder with limited experience and a tight budget, the choice is not so complicated. Traditional plank-on-frame and cold-molded construction require complicated lofting and building molds--to say nothing of expensive tooling and lots of time. Stitch-and-glue construction, on the other hand, can produce the same results with a substantial savings in time and money. The process is quicker, easier, uses fewer parts, and produces a boat that is much easier to maintain--without the building molds and with only the simplest lofting. For tools, you need little more than a circular saw, a sander/polisher/grinder, a block plane, a framing square, a level, and a tape measure.
Sam Devlin has elevated stitch-and-glue boatbuilding to an artform, and his graceful designs have attracted the attention of backyard builders across the country. Here is all you need to know to build the boat of your dreams, whether it's a 7-foot dinghy or a 40-foot power cruiser. Devlin's Boatbuilding: How to Build Any Boat the Stitch-and-Glue Way shares the wisdom of his 16 years of experience designing, building, and helping others build his fleet of small sail- and powerboats.
It's all here, from choosing a design and setting up shop to painting the finished hull and launching. There is also a gallery of Devlin's designs and a detailed appendix listing sources for tools and other materials.
Customer Reviews:
Interesting, but no use to the first-time boat builder.......2007-06-21
Samual Devlin is clearly a god to many in the boat-building community, but this book is simply pitched too high for most beginners, and that's a shame given that it's marketed to those very beginners. The book's major flaw (or it's greatest strength, perhaps) is in its author's refusal to accept anything but the best tools or materials. So for instance he says "There can be no compromise: the plywood *must* be marine grade". I think it's fair to say that most people building stitch-and-glue boats are doing so for economic reasons, so why insist on hard-to-get highly expensive marine plywood?
You'll rapidly put this book down unless you're highly familiar with the arcane vocabulary of advanced boat-building which Devlin uses at every turn, and sadly, that's what I've done for now.
I *am* liking the simpler book by Jim Michalak - Boatbuilding for Beginners (and Beyond).
Stitch and Glue excellence.......2007-05-24
Devlins created a boat building book from vast experience that is easy to follow and understand. He delves into the build process and materials used with great detail and an enthusiasm that will surely rub off.
I need to build another boat!!
stich-and-glue boatbuilding system.......2007-01-19
If you have the time, money, tools and proper construction area you can build some fantastic boats that don't require all of the ribbing and lofting of conventional boatbuilding.
I found a few basic techniques in this book that I can apply to the building of small boats also.
Easy Boat Building Concepts thoroughly explained.......2006-11-04
I have read this book several times. He has a clear and logical way of presenting the stages of construction. His web site is informative and his video is equally as instructive. In terms of a complete "How to" series, I only wish other disciplines were as good.
In addition to the quality of his construction, I am particularly fond of his designs. Most other stitch and glue plans lack the elegance of Sam's designs.
Not just for boat building!.......2006-10-07
I bought this book because I wanted to prepare myself for building a boat in 2007, next year. In reading through it, I learned that what is covered is not just how to build a boat, but really more about how to finish a boat.
You may not understand this, but it's true, I'll explain.
Currently I am building a coffee shop from scratch, really, from scratch, I've gutted the place, I've put up new walls, I've built counters, I built a coffee roaster, I fixed / heavily modified an espresso machine, basically, I've done every part of it and I'm in to year two and my doors are still yet to be opened to the public (so far, it's just a speak-easy). It's been the hardest project to date for me and I've often considered ways of getting out of it, (mainly through the ending of my existance), but have continued all the same.
When I read; "...sometimes you have to hate it to finish it." and all the other advice he gives in the book on how to complete the project, it really gave me a sense of not only being able to bring my shop to completion, but gave me a greater sense of how to go about finishing any project that you really believe in, but run into trouble completing.
I also bought this book for information on shaping plywood, because I plan to make some bent-ply furniture - and the information contained in this book does greatly help on the subject of forming plywood.
Very well written and a joy to read.

Very good book.......2007-08-06
If you want build a boat, this is the book! Very good! And very simple too, you just need to have hands and will. I do living in Brazil, and I do read and speak english a little, but the book is very simple to read and understand. I'd start my own boat last week.

not really "plans", but offsets and hints are included.......2007-03-12
I bought this book for the scaled-down plans so I wasn't happy to discover there aren't dimensions given on many of the drawings (bulkheads, deck, etc), they more resemble advertisements for the full scale plans which are sold separately. However full hull offsets are provided which is the one part you can't figure out on your own, as well as clear simple assembly hints. I'm an engineer with zero woodworking or fiberglass experience, I was able to build a beautiful, simple kayak from this book.
A shill for CLC boats.......2006-09-15
I bought this book hoping that it would be a good starter book for building stitch and glue kayaks and canoes. While it is a good book with information on the stitch and glue process, the concentration is along the lines of the Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC) boat kits. There are no plans in the book although what fooled me while I checked out the book at the bookstore, was that a portion of the CLC plans were reproduced in the book, but nothing to build a boat from (obviously) but that was not stated anywhere on the cover or in any kind of noticeable fashion until you start to read the text. I have heard that you should read the first chapter or two before you buy a book such as this, however, I typically don't do that and it cost me to waste time and money this time (it is stated in the intro or first chapter that this book uses CLC's boats as the point of reference and that there are no buildable plans in the book, had I seen that before I bought it, I would not have bought this book). I have read from builders of CLC boats that their kits have given newbie boat kit builders problems and I believe this book was written mostly for them. This became evident to me when I realized that, in addition to lacking plans, there was no information on even designing your own boat to utilize these techniques with nor any info. on converting plans for boats built via different methods (like strip built boats and, for kayaks and canoes, skin on frame designs). I have boatbuilding books for skin on frame and strip built boats and they include both plans and how-to general design for similar boats to those in those books.
In short, unless you're building a boat kit, avoid this book, I believe there are other books out there that not only deal with the basics of S&G boatbuilding, but also provide plans to use to apply those skills.

Board Member's Guide.......2007-01-19
The content of this "book" is fine but it should be advertised for what it is; a pamphlet. I expected a "book" (more than 17 pages.) I cannot quibble with the scope but it is very cursory. No depth to the content. I would liken it to an outline or a brochure; definitely not a "book." Actually I felt a bit "ripped off."
Your Roles and Responsibilities As a Board Member (Carvergui.......2000-04-11
If you or your board uses Policy Governance and need to understand your job quickly, then read this book. Policy governance is difficult for many board members to grasp, but this handy text brings it home fast. It's more brief, better written and to the point than Carver's 240 page "Boards That Make a Difference." Yet it is only an overview, so don't count on it making you an expert.
I like the basic job description section; it gets to the real job of boards and helps you see the danger of activities--being busy is not always best. However the content is a bit insubstantial, so that you will need to find your own applications of the three "board products. Carver offers 18 useful bullets to the job of board member.
I find this booklet essential for all board member orientations. I would highly recommend this (and the other 11 booklets in the series) to all board members.
Book Description
"History shows that people who save and invest grow and prosper, and the others deteriorate and collapse.
As
Financial Reckoning Day demonstrates, artificially low interest rates and rapid credit creation policies set by Alan Greenspan and the Federal Reserve caused the bubble in U.S. stocks of the late '90s. . . . Now, policies being pursued at the Fed are making the bubble worse. They are changing it from a stock market bubble to a consumption and housing bubble.
And when those bubbles burst, it's going to be worse than the stock market bubble . . .
No one, of course, wants to hear it. They want the quick fix. They want to buy the stock and watch it go up twenty-five percent because that's what happened last year, and that's what they say on TV."
—Jim Rogers, author of the bestseller Adventure Capitalist
from the Foreword to
Financial Reckoning Day
Advanced praise from bestselling authors
"An investment book that will not only enlarge your investment horizon, but also make you laugh and thoroughly entertain you for a few hours."
—Dr. Marc Faber, author of the bestseller Tomorrow's Gold
"Financial Reckoning Day is . . . in the category of scintillating sex or good vision, something to be savored and enjoyed-before it is too late."
—James Dale Davidson, author of the bestseller The Great Reckoning and The Sovereign Individual
"A powerful and insightful vision . . . each paragraph stimulates a new rush of thoughts that fills in gaping holes in the investor's understanding of what has happened to their dreams . . . while prepping them to confront any new confusion that may arrive."

The investor's guide to surviving a slowing economy
Financial Reckoning Day is a "big picture" investment book that skillfully illustrates how the American economy is following in the footsteps of the Japanese economy, which fell into a long, soft "slow motion" deflationary depression brought about by two irresistible forces-its aging population and a structural reaction to the greatest financial boom in its history. With the U.S. market in a downturn, investors are looking for answers to why this is happening and what they can do to protect their investments. Financial Reckoning Day will provide the answers to those questions. Written by a team of well-respected financial professionals-whose publications and newsletters reach a quarter million investors each week-this book shows readers how the economic megaboom of the 1990s will inevitably be followed by a megabust in the first decade of the twenty-first century. Many believe that depressions are artifacts of financial history, not features of the future. Financial Reckoning Day shows why these events are a real possibility and discusses the dangers they pose to investors around the world, arguing that popular democracy, aging populations, and bad economic theories doom Western economics to bear markets, and falling consumer spending for years to come. More importantly, it shows readers how they can survive and thrive during such events.
William Bonner is President and CEO of Agora Publishing, one of the largest financial newsletters published in the world. Bonner is the creator of the Daily Reckoning, a contrarian financial newsletter. There are now more than 450,000 readers and the newsletter has received praise from numerous publications including Money and Worth magazines.
Addison Wiggin is Managing Editor for the Daily Reckoning financial newsletter.
Customer Reviews:
It's all in Adam Smith.......2007-08-12
The authors of this book come close to identifying and pinpointing what the major cause of financial bubbles is and the disasterous impacts that affect large portions of the general population when they pop.
They correctly give the first half of the story when they quote(p.238) Adam Smith's assessment that aggregate savings is a necessary ingredient that is vitally important in order to maintain aggregate economic growth over time once an optimal capital stock has already been accumulated in the present while the prodigal and other misbehavior destroys the possibility of economic growth.Smith, however, goes on to clearly identify what he means by misbehavior.Misbehavior occurs when the private commercial banks and investment banking houses on Wall Street take the savings of the population and waste and destroy it by making loans to projectors(J M Keynes' speculators-chapter 12,General Theory,1936)and imprudent risk takers(Keynes's lender's versus borrower's risk discussion in chapter 11,GT)instead of making the loans to the " sober " people who will invest it in starting new businesses and /or expanding existing businesses. The loans can't be made to speculators who will use the loans to leverage their speculative financial behavior. The private equity firms and hedge funds are using the capital markets to distort and manipulate the assets, liabilities, and equity of American business firms and corporations in order to use them to back an ever increasing number of new financial instruments, such as derivatives,lease-backs,sub prime loan backed bonds, etc.,that will create financial returns irrespective of any real increased productivity from the firms that are taken over by the debt financed leveraged buyouts.
What, then, is Smith's solution ? It is to prevent the problem from arising in the first place!! Fix the rate of interest on bank loans at a low rate marginally above the prime rate permanently in the long run.Cut off all loans to projectors, prodigals, and imprudent risk takers.Make sure the loans get into the hands of productive people and not Wall Street speculators.See Smith(Wealth of Nations,1776,Modern Library (Cannan)edition,pp.296-340 in general and pp.339-340 specifically) .Follow the wisdom of Adam Smith and you will not have to worry about days of financial reckoning and/or surviving the next " soft" depression of the 21st century.Brussee's book on this problem would also be a good choice as he ties the problem directly to the investment banking houses on Wall Street, although he is not aware of the fact that Smith spotted this potential ,general problem well over two hundred years ago.
Bill Bonner - king of "doom & gloom" newsletters.......2007-07-07
His source of income is promoting "doom & gloom"
newsletters and writing an ocassional book such as this one.
He recommends buying gold silver & digging
yourself a hole in a ground to live in.
"The Sky is Falling!" = "Risk can't be transfered!".......2007-01-26
But Bonner and Wiggans did manage to pluck a subscription to their newsletter from you.
Chicken Little was in the woods one day when an acorn fell on her head. It scared her so much she trembled all over. She shook so hard, half her feathers fell out.
Chicken Little: "Help! Help! The sky is falling! I have to go tell the king!"
So she ran in great fright to tell the king. Along the way she met Henny Penny.
"Where are you going, Chicken Little?"
"Oh, help! The sky is falling!"
"How do you know?"
"I saw it with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears, and part of it fell on my head!"
"This is terrible, just terrible! We'd better hurry up."
So they both ran away as fast as they could. Soon they met Ducky Lucky.
..................
So they ran with all their might, until they met Foxy Loxy.
"Well, well. Where are you rushing on such a fine day?"
Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, Turkey Lurkey (together) "Help! Help!" It's not a fine day at all. The sky is falling, and we're running to tell the king!"
"How do you know the sky is falling?"
"I saw it with my own eyes, and heard it with my own ears, and part of it fell on my head!"
"I see. Well then, follow me, and I'll show you the way to the king."
So Foxy Loxy led Chicken Little, Henny Penny, Ducky Lucky, Goosey Loosey, and Turkey Lurkey across a field and through the woods. He led them straight to his den, and they never saw the king to tell him that the sky is falling.
But Bonne and Wiggans did manage to pluck a subscription to their newsletter from you.
Their first before Empire.......2007-01-07
This is Bonner and Wiggins' book just before Empire of Debt. There is repetition betw. the two and if I were you I'd get Empire and not worry about this one. That said, the authors are spot on about the mess we American's are in and in for.
Financial Reckoning Day.......2006-11-12
An easy to read book. I like their irreverend, somewhat cynical style of describing the current financial and politcal situtation our country is in. Just like their previous book the content is well researched. However just like their previous book this book has the same glaring ommission: a clear vision from the authors about how we could possibly remedy the situation.
