Sooner or later every brand has to interact with tomorrow's people, so how do you equip yourself for such a world. Book Description
Among horticultural crops, fruits and vegetables are of primary importance for an adequate and balanced human diet. In certain parts of the world, fruits and vegetables are the major dietary staple. Apart from being a rich source of vitamins and minerals, the production of fruits and vegetables also contributes significantly to regional and national economies through national and international trade. However, the cultivation of these crops for optimum yield and quality is highly technical and needs improved technological support. Management of perennial fruit crops requires further close monitoring especially for the management of diseases which affect production and subsequent post-harvest losses significantly.
During the twentieth century, plant pathology has witnessed a dramatic advance in management of fruit and vegetable diseases through in-depth investigations of host-pathogen interactions, development of molecular diagnostic tools, integration of new concepts, principles and approaches. The new millennium promises excitement and hope for the future by new advances in eco-friendly technologies in integrated disease management of fruits and vegetables.
This book contains a comprehensive overview of current practice in diagnosis and management of diseases of fruits and vegetables. It includes the latest diagnostic tools and management strategies of almost all the important temperate, tropical and subtropical fruits and vegetables. For each individual crop various aspects of diseases such as the diagnosis, forecast, elimination of diseases and integrated management at nursery, orchard and post-harvest stage are discussed by leading plant pathologists. The diseases of economic importance caused by fungi, bacteria, viruses and virus-like organisms and nematodes of each crop are covered, describing their history, distribution, losses incurred, symptoms, diagnostic tools, epidemiology and integrated applied management approaches including cultural, chemical, genetic resources and the use of bio-control agents. Each chapter is vividly illustrated with photographs of typical symptoms, graphs, tables and line drawings to make the subject more interesting and easy to understand for students, scientists, planners, administrators, growers and other end users.
Volume I covers diseases of fruits including apple, citrus, grapes, mango and pineapple and of vegetables such as carrot, celery and cucurbits, with special reference to integrated disease management practices.
Volume II covers diseases of fruits including avocado, banana, grapes, guava, papaya, passion fruit, strawberry, stone fruits and minor tropical and subtropical fruits. Vegetables such as lettuce, pea, pepper, potato, onion and garlic have been included in this volume besides the role of mycorrhiza and biocontrol agents in disease management.

Customer Reviews:
an enabling, supportive reference source for therapists.......2000-04-27
This book is packed, without being written to intimidate. Sections are clearly headed, inviting use of the book as a reference.
As my understanding and interests in gestalt therapy evolve, so do different sections strike me differently.
Zinker is a coach, who leans over my shoulder as I consider my approach to helping others. The tone is unequivocal: encouraging and articulate.
Zinker has been been immersed in the field to such depths that his writing shows evidence of integration of his findings. He covers gestalt therapy; a difficult topic to write about. He spells out his findings about working with families and does so in an aesthetic, almost spiritual.
Yet, I also find the book written with an intellectual rigour that invites revisiting. It's written in a can-do, leading edge manner.

A Journey into the Tao.......2007-10-11
This is another book that I read over and over again. It always has something new to say to me depending on where I am when I read it. It covers the blossoming of a master in the martial arts from overbearing neophyte to true master. It explores the Tao and proper principles in training, and contains one of my favorite quotes. "Your quest is not for quantity of production. Your quest, my quest, the martial-arts quest is for quality of experience."
Very Special Quality Reading.......2006-05-25
Master Tri was one of the kindest living beings that I've ever known...a true Master with timeless wisdom found in his words/sharings. He will always be greatly remembered and missed. I've done a painting in memory of him and all of the other Great Masters before him, that I've titled "Spirit of Shaolin" which can be seen at one of my online galleries at: DaelArt.com Dael
The best book on what it means to train martial arts, and to be a human........2006-02-10
5 stars isnt enough.
This is one of those rare books that you can read 1000 times and on the 1001st read you would still get more out of it.
This book can easily be used as a pocket companion throughout your entire life to help you in more ways than i have room to write in a little review.
Also, this book has really helped me to see more clearly as to what my purpose in life is.
I hope it will do the same for you. Na Mo A Mi To Fo
When the student is ready, the book will appear.......2004-09-15
I got this book a few years ago and didn't think much of it because I couldn't understand it. Now, after a few years of Tai Chi and meditation, I'm starting to understand it. A great book, indeed! I'm planning to read his next book.
lessons through fables.......2000-07-26
This short read, told as a fable, is broken down into chapters, each expounding on an idea the book wishes to delve into with greater detail. The relationship between a martial arts master and his student is one of the most profound possible, and this book guides the reader/student into a more profound understanding of the teacher/student dynamic. The end result is, or should be, that the student becomes the master, and that the cycle of learning and growth between master and student is eternal and self-renewing.
There is one narrative quirk that should not affect the power of the lessons contained herein, but does weaken the book a bit from a writer's point of view. Otherwise, this is a valuable book, one that addresses the key relationship between master & student. In the West, it is common for students to not take their masters as seriously as they should, and for masters to occaisonally show less responsibility and accountability than they should. This short volume shows what a balanced, committed disciple/master relationship might look like.
Recommended.

Watch Officer's Guide: A Handbook for All Deck Watch Officers

Customer Reviews:
Naval writing guide.......2007-06-08
Good information but, it is a little out dated. It is still a must have for SNCO's and Officer's personal libraries.
Somewhat dated, but still very useful.......2006-01-06
I have owned and used this book since I joined the Navy. It has been an invaluable asset when writing evals, award, Fit-Reps, and correspondence. While some of the formats in the book are outdated, the advice and examples are great. I have found it best to use the Navy instruction to determine the proper way to fill out any form (eval, fit-rep, etc) and this book to determine the "best" way to say something. This book has been passed around every command where I have served and is a useful tool for those just beginning to do Navy paperwork. I think it would make a great gift for that new Ensign, First Class, or Chief.
Essential Reference for Sailors, a Useful Reference for Every One Else.......2005-10-01
The Guide to Naval Writing is geared toward the Navy and the Navy's formats for writing different documents. However, if your job requires you to produce and deliver letters, memos, instructions, speeches, briefs, technical studies, and articles for various media then this book might be useful for you as well. As a career Navy Officer, I have used this book more times than I can count.
In the interest of full disclosure, many of the examples are real documents regarding real people (with the names changed for privacy) and this reviewer knows at least two of those individuals personally.
This book can be read end-to-end or used as needed to aid in individual projects. The book is organized into twelve chapters each, except for the introduction, addressing a unique writing requirement. Those are: Letters, Memos, and Directives; Staff Writing; Naval Messages; Performance Evaluations; Awards and Commendations; Speaking and Briefing; Technical Reports, Executive Summaries, and Abstracts; JAG Manual Investigations; Writing for the News Media; The Professional Article; and a handbook for style and format in naval writing.
Each of these is superb. However, the material is becoming somewhat dated, especially the evaluations section. There have been numerous changes since the "new" evaluation system came out in 1996. One should use that section with caution. It would be great if the author or the Naval Institute came out with a new edition of this book to reflect some of the incremental changes to naval correspondence.
If you are not in the Navy, this is still a useful book. The handbook chapter is useful as well as the tips on point papers, briefings, trip reports, and writing for the press that would be applicable for almost any other job that involves writing. It is easy to imagine one using this book to get an idea of how to frame and format a topic for any of the above mentioned requirements.
This book is a must read for those in the Navy. If you have a son or daughter who is going to be commissioned soon, this book should be on their bookshelf.
Superb manual, a must for Navy-Marine officers.......2002-02-06
My Group CO bought this manual for all of his subordinate commands. I received one of the twenty copies and use it almost once a week to assist me with my correspondence duties. It addresses almost everything imaginable from fitness reports to letters to promotion boards and award citations to letters of extra military instruction. Although the Department of the Navy has put out a correspondence manual, it is not in as much detail and does not provide as good examples like the Guide to Naval Writing is. If you plan on being a successful officer, you will have to learn to communicate effectively. Although this book cannot do everything for you, it will get you leaps and bounds ahead of most other officers. Semper Fidelis
Very good reference book.......2000-03-30
This is a very good reference book for most types of formal writing, including directives, point papers, award justifications, etc. This is even used in many leadership classes. I keep this very close to my desk. The evaluation and fitrep information is some of the most current available, which isn't very common with this rapidly changing system. If you do any type of formal writing at all, this book is absolutely required.

Customer Reviews:
Great place to start looking for stocks.......2006-05-24
This is a great place to start if you are looking for stocks to buy. It gives a great breakdown of a stocks 8 year history of:
>Revenue
>Net Income
>Earnings per share
>Dividends per Share
>Highest and Lowest stock price for each year
It gives you the basic profile of the company, the shortcomings to bear in mind, and reasons to buy.
It is great for ideas on companies to buy with a great overview of the stocks history. It divides stocks into its industry, sector, and category. This book will be useful to use to understand and create a diversified portfolio of individual stocks.
But be warned of three things:
1). Use this book as a history book not a newspaper, go to Quotes/Yahoo or marketcenter.com for up to date information.
2). These are all large cap stocks, this book is not for investors looking for small cap stocks.
3)/ This is a basic beginners book, great for them, but an experienced investor will already have this information from other periodicals.
Book full of old information .......2005-01-25
This book provides a terrible disservice to investors because it uses quotes from experts many of which are 2 or 3 years old! On Wall St. circumstances can change in an instant. Some of these companies could be bankrupt by the time this book is in print.
Excellent book on the great companies.......2004-11-11
I read and liked Mr. Slatter's previous 2004 version of this book, so I picked up this one too. Each company is described in great detail, so you get a good idea of their business, the products they make or services they provide, how they operate, management's approach to business, and their record of past earnings and dividends. There are many familiar names here, such as Johnson and Johnson, Proctor and Gamble, Walmart, General Mills, Coca-Cola, Merck, IBM, Medtronic, but also many other companies that you may not have heard of that have been around for decades and have consistently been profitable or increased earnings or dividends over time, such as Illinois Tool Works, which has been around since 1912, has paid a dividend since the 1930s, and during the decade 1993 to 2003, earnings went from .92 to $3.37, a compound annual growth rate of 13.9 percent, and dividends went from .25 to .94, for a growth rate of 14.2 percent.
Besides detailed profiles of all the companies, there are also sections on The Essentials of Successful Investing, Some Thoughts on Analyzing Stocks, How To Avoid Portfolio Blunders, 21 Ways to Reduce Investment Risk, What's Wrong with Buying Mutual Funds?, A Novel Approach to Asset Allocation, How to Get Started, The Pros and Cons of Dollar Cost Averaging, Basic Terminology, and How My 100 Stocks Were Selected.
For example, Mr. Slatter points out the importance of diversification, picking stocks that have a history of a rising trend of earnings, that have a return on equity of 15 or better (an excellent way to immediately gauge the historical and overall performance of a stock), the use of dollar cost averaging, asset allocation, and many other useful topics.
One thing that may surprise many readers is Mr. Slatter isn't a fan of mutual funds. Ninety percent of mutual funds underperform the market. This usually isn't because of poor stock picking by the management, but because of several other reasons: mutual fund fees and expenses can be as high as 3 percent, mutual fund expense ratios reached a high of 1.6 percent in 2002, and stock turnover costs are about 0.8 percent. These expenses are enough to cause most mutual funds to perform below the market.
Futhermore, picking a mutual fund isn't that easy anymore. As of the late 90s, there were over 5000 mutual funds, more than there are stocks on the New York Stock exchange, all of which have various approaches and different levels of risks. For these reasons, Slatter isn't a big fan of mutual funds and instead favors putting together a portfolio of high quality stocks yourself. And by distributing them throughout all the different industries and sectors, from high tech to retail, you can achieve sufficient diversification without having to own a mutual fund.
Interestingly, the economist who developed the modern theory of stock diversification (and who won the Nobel Prize in Economics for this contribution) showed that picking only one or two of the top companies from each sector was necessary in order to achieve sufficient diversification. Moreover, because most mutual fund companies own hundreds of stocks, they often run out of first-rate stocks and are forced to buy the second and third-tier stocks, thus diluting their performance. The small investor, however, has no such limitation, and can cherry-pick and put together a smaller portfolio of stocks that would make a typical mutual fund manager green with envy.
Overall, a fine book on investing, and not the least of its virtues is that it's well written and fun to read.
