If you are doing well in one-to-one conversations but stumble whenever you have to talk to an audience, you will find some good advice in this book. For "two dollars a piece", you will learn five basic rules that will help you a long way. Nothing more, nothing less. Well worth the money and the time to read it.

I found precious little here. You might think that with the glowing reviews from famous people that this would be a useful book, but in fact the reviews aren't wrong - if you're a senator or a TV personality you'll find this book useful.

The rest of us can give it a miss.

Valenti may be a great speaker, but in terms of a book for everyone he offers little. You should remember your speech pretty much word for word. You should think of the cadence of how you'll deliver it. There really isn't much more, apart from long reminiscences about famous speeches and speakers. The book has a strange almost Victorian tone.

To misquote one of the reviews - this is a dispensible resource. Spend your money on one of the books that teaches you a lot.

A rare gem that stands out...........2002-11-04

This outstanding book is a rare gem that stands out amongst so many books on public speaking. Jack Valenti knows his stuff and demonstrates with finesse the skills and techniques required for successful public speaking. Even the experts, like Barbara Walters, are taking tips from this prolific writer and respected public speaker. His stories and eloquent illustrations are vivid and memorable, drawing both from his personal experience and real life examples of top public figures.

Valenti was a speechwriter for US President Johnson and is currently president of the Motion Picture Association of America. What can you say for a book that former US President George H.W. Bush recommends as a must-read for those who take their case to the public. This book is a brilliant achievement indeed. Once you start reading, it is hard to put it down.

Valenti assures us with his words:
"Let us be clear: If you want to be able to rise before an audience, large or small, and speak to them so that they will listen to you, you can do it."

A valuable resource.......2002-07-19

As a former teacher, I think this book is an excellent resource for teaching a skill that is becoming a lost art. Whether your career routinely includes public speaking or not, people in every walk of life could benefit from the ability to organize thoughts and communicate better. And who better to teach confidence? To see him speak is to admire him.

Kind of disappointing.......2002-07-10

I ordered this book after listening to an interview of the author on cable. I guess I had excessive expectations. I've been in need of a pep talk, and have always wanted to improve my ability to persuade others. The idea that this author had coached many persuasive people was a selling point.

But I can't say I found anything for me in here. There's nothing wrong with the technical content - there just wasn't anything new. While helpful, it seems awfully basic - like stressing the importance of preparation, and practice. Whoopie.

And much of the unique content, IMO, is too heavy on the name-dropping. The excerpts from speeches of the-beautiful-people-I-have-helped felt much like padding. Uh-huh, I guess I should be impressed, but shouldn't these passages be more inspiring?

Certainly I'm picky in these days of economic duress - I spend my money much more carefully, since I have a lot less. But I really thought this might be a worthwhile investment, and I rather feel it came up short.

Concise, excellent format, very easy to read.......2007-09-12

With efforts, 5 steps to a 5 does what it claims to do. That being said, students need to thoroughly go through this guide and go back and read the parts that they don't understand clearly in the textbook. This book is excellent if you're short on time (say, a week to two weeks to review for the AP Exam). The AP Exam does not include too much details (what Barron's would always do), so 5 steps to a 5 is great at generalizing the big picture. It also has exclamation marks whenever there are very important concepts to remember, and also offers where the essays would usually fall on. I used this book and got a 5 on the AP Bio exam, but I also read my textbook and used this book as a last minute review. The Cliffs AP Bio review book is excellent as well. I find their questions the closest to the actual test.

Bought this for my son who is struggling with AP Biology. He wasn't happy about it at first, but has really enjoyed this author's presentation and practical explanations. He says the book presents the information in an easy to understand and remember format. Now, we just have to see how he does on the test!

this book is really good. it covers all the topics in the AP EXAM.

This book got me a 5!.......2006-10-30

No kidding! This book is seriously the best out there. Trust me- I took the class and the test, and I got a five. It's very readable and actually pretty fun to read! I did some research on the author and he's a great guy- and this shows through his book! I seriously did not study beyond this book for any of the tests after I started using it- and I (am not kidding when I say that I) got 111% on about 85% of my tests in total- this figure is including the several ones beforehand- meaning that I was well above the class average- and typically thats not the case.

Trust me when I say that you do NOT need anything else than this book (regardless of what others say0- well, besides your text book. If you do what I did and you do ALL the homework in this class, than you are almost guaranteed a nice plump 5 on the test and an "A" in the class- remember how its weighted? Thats a 5.0 people!

The key features that you might want to be aware of: The end of each chapter has a very in depth, but none too long, summary. The strategies work well- especially the "bottom hour glass" ones. And... Fun to read! It really feels like the author.. his name escapes me... is speaking to you with a fun tone, rather than just a book making you sleep. Trust me here too- I know those books. Too well.

Though this probably isn't the only book you'll need, whatever your teacher gives you throughout the year will fill in the missing gaps. I read this entire book and got a 5 on the exam.

This book does give a good general review of everything, your teacher should help you with the details. In some cases it will teach you some things you'll be happy to know. In general, it will organize everything you need to know and probably already have learned. This book is a must for review.

I should mention I took AP Environmental Science at the same time as Bio. These two classes overlapped very much. I used a lot of my APES info on the Bio test. For those of you not taking APES at the same time, this book does tell you the things you need to know about ecology and behavior type things. That's what's nice about this book.

This book has a lot of good features and will help you do your best on the test and in the class!

Very comprehensive coverage on close to 700 waters. I was amazed at all the information. I'm not sure but there must be over a hundred maps. The book has introduced me to dozens of new waters and to some very successful fishing trips. Two thumbs up.

This book is great. I have been fishing for thirty years and got tired of the same old spots around Salem. Now i can easily plan my trips to go farther away to new spots that are less crowded and more beautiful. This book tells you where you can stay at and what to use to catch a fish for a certain area. I caught my biggest trout at Fremont lake last week. I have many fishing guides, but none really measure up to this one. It's great.

This book is the best. It absolutely brought my family and me together. Instead of sticking to one spot that i know is succesful. Me and my family travel to a new place every time. We have traveled to half the places in Utah. My wife loves it and so do my kids, neither one of them have ever been so excited about fishing. The Utah Fishing guide is phenomenal, it's helped me learn new tricks for every place. I highly recomend this book.

Paints the true picture of writing and the writers' life........2007-08-16

Heather Sellers presents writing as what it really is. She gives you the truths about writing. She answers questions like: what does it take to be a writer? Is writing really for you? Are you willing to write badly, and then keep going? What is a true writer's life like? In chapter 24, she dispels the theories that writing a book will instantly make you rich and famous, and gives her own personal example of some of her feelings right after her first book was published.
"But many writers nurture a dream that is false. You will get published. But it is unlikely that publication will solve any problems you have -blocks, money, habits,confidence or writing ability." And, she tells us that you should write because it's what you want to do, what you have to do. Even if you're not going to get paid for it, or famous from it.

Divided into 3 parts and 30 chapters, you can read this from beginning to end, or you can open it up anywhere and just start reading. The Table Of Contents is really nice, because, not only does it give you the title of the chapter, but it tells you what the chapter deals with. There's a wide variety of useful writing topics covered.

This is on my top five favorite books on writing. My book is bookmarked in several places and heavily underlined. The signs of a loved book. This is the perfect blend of writing advice and personal exploration as a writer.

Page After Page:Different than most writing books.......2007-05-12

In Page After Page, Heather Sellers offers untraditional, but sound advice for writers. I think she gets down to the nitty gritty and barebone honesty of issues which writers want to talk about, but often don't know how to bring up with other writrs. Sellers pinpoints issues with writing which we know are there, but can't quite name.

Sellers'flighty "I'm forever a college student" style is annoying to me. Somehow, for me, it doesn't fit with the sage writing advice she offers. (Maybe it's just a personal thing.) I think the book is definitely worth a read. I also ordered Chapter After Chapter and am eager to get started on it.

Motivation page after page.......2006-08-05

With straight talk as though the author wrote the book just for me, I found this to be the motivation I need to get back to writing and making it a priority in my life. Not just thinking about it daily, but doing something towards my goal. The excercises are simple and fun and help get the writer writing! In an easy to read, conversational style the author makes it clear that you don't need to sit for hours everyday to be a "writer". You just need to set aside even 10-20 minutes a day and get that pen to the paper. Even reading books, lots of different types of books, can help in achieving your goal. Most of all you have to really want to do it and make it a priority in your life. To make time for it. The most valuable advice she gave was stop talking about it. Really, stop talking about it and take the time and energy you are wasting talking about it and DO something. Write!

Motivating and fun - not just for writing.......2006-02-11

This is a great book for a number of reasons. First, it's fun to read. Ms. Seller's writing style is enjoyable, and she has kept the chapters very manageable and compartmentalized. I can read a section, get inspired, then put it down for a day or two while I do the exercises, which are the next good thing about the book.

At the end of each chapter are exercises that are often very different from typical writing exercises. They seem a little more inspired or thoughtful. For instance, the one I really like is 10 minutes of writing, with a pencil or marker because they're slower than ball point pens, on unlined paper, on a topic using no adjectives or adverbs.

Another thing I really like about this book is that a lot of the exercises she has in there to motivate you for writing can be applied to other areas of life as well. Just substitute in your topic of choice (for me it's programming) and work the exercise to apply to that area. It really is a very good book, and well worth the purchase.

A Hit With My Kids!.......2005-07-22
I bought "Teatro Olivia" at the beginning of summer, and my kids have spent hours playing with it. The material is sturdy and has taken a lot of play from my children and their friends. Extra blank backdrops are included in the package, so my children have been busy making up new plays to present--Sponge Bob, Harry Potter, Anne of Green Gables and so on. Thanks for a great educational toy!

Oliva Fans Celebrate!!!.......2004-11-13
Ian Falconer has returned to his rich roots of set designing, and created an environment for Olivia fans to truly relish! I just bought this set today, and it is wonderful. The main stage is sturdy and cleverly put together. There are spaces above and to the sides for character placement and manipulation. The included drop down sets are beautifully evocative charcoal drawings, and there are even two extra blank sets to inspire budding scenic artists. A large built in drawer allows for storage of all the included scenic backdrops and figures, with plenty of room left for creations of ones own. The included figures are sturdy and beautiful renditions of classic Olivia poses, with several original to this set and well in keeping with the Porcine Diva we have all come to know and Love!

This lovely set perfectly captures Olivia's feisty zeal for life and of course the theatric, which made the original book so inspiring to all who have ever known, (or been) little girls.

I love the fact that Falconer returned to his roots with this one, and brought out his little diva in a setting which will inspire countless ideas and hours of fun for Olivia fans young and old.
