      1 out of 5 stars Amateurish.......2004-01-08

I'm surprised that anyone who advocates creative thinking would write and publish such a simplistic book that totally lacks imagination in its presentation. Should'nt people who try to sell their expertise in creativity be at least a "tiny" bit creative when they produce a book?

      3 out of 5 stars A Solid Effort!.......2001-05-02

Mike Vance (who worked closely with Walt Disney, one of the world's greatest innovators) and Diane Deacon clearly know their stuff when it comes to raising the bar, thinking outside the box and other somewhat clichéd approaches to business and personal performance. But, paradoxically, their book fails to raise its own bar. The writing is simplistic, lacks personality and reads like a formulaic presentation absent nuance, wit, intellect or style. Nonetheless, the book's content is worthy of your attention, especially if you're stuck in a rut, fearful of innovating or locked into a corporate climate that discourages creativity. We at getAbstract.com recommend this book's message to those who need a reminder that unless they innovate and ratchet up their achievement level, they will stagnate. As for the authors - do as they say, not as they write.

        Book Description

Since the enormously successful first edition of Forensic DNA Typing was published, the Human Genome Project has published a draft sequence of the human genome and completed the finished reference sequence. The advent of modern DNA technology has resulted in the increased ability to perform human identity testingdesirable in a number of situations including the determination of perpetrators of violent crime such as murder and rape, resolving unestablished paternity, and identifying remains of missing persons or victims of mass disasters. The technology has been utilized in identifying remains from victims of the World Trade Center twin towers collapse following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, the President Clinton-Monica Lewinsky scandal, and the identification of the remains in the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Indeed, our perceptions of history have been changed with DNA evidence that revealed Thomas Jefferson fathered a child by one of his slaves. This book examines the science of current forensic DNA typing methods by focusing on the biology, technology, and genetic interpretation of short tandem repeat (STR) markers, which encompass the most common forensic DNA analysis methods used today. Ten new chapters have been added to accommodate the explosion of new information since the turn of the century.

*The only book available that specifically covers detailed information on mitochondrial DNA and the Y chromosome
*Chapters cover the topic from introductory level right up to "cutting edge" research
*High-profile cases are addressed throughout the book, near the sections dealing with the science or issues behind these cases
*NEW TO THIS EDITION: D.N.A. Boxes--boxed "Data, Notes & Applications" sections throughout the book offer higher levels of detail on specific questions

5 out of 5 stars Forensic DNA Typing, Second Edition: Biology, Technology, and STR Markers.......2007-08-13

I would not recommend this book to someone who was completely new to the use of genetics as a tool for forensics. I did an undergraduate degree in biotechnoloy in 2000 and wanted to review and learn more about specifically how most DNA in crime labs was being processed today. This book was recommended to me by the head of a prominent DNA crime lab. It is written at a higher level than most texts but offers a wealth of detailed information, particularly if you are interested in contrasting advantages and disadvantages of different kits and equipment.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for learning DNA.......2006-11-10

This book is a great book for teaching DNA. It breaks down the information pretty good in some areas but not as well in others. Overall I would say it is a good book.

5 out of 5 stars Clearly, an outstanding piece of work!.......2001-03-28

While Dr. Butler's book on DNA typing is clearly based on experience and profound understanding of the subject, I was most impressed with the readability. I was thrilled to find principles illustrated by examples from current events! Students of science will find this book refreshing. Well written (and edited)!

5 out of 5 stars The Breakthrough in Forensics This Year! - A Must Have Book!.......2001-03-21

Dr. Butler takes a very complex subject and makes it easy enough for the novice to understand, yet is comprehensive enough for the professional research analyst. It is full of excellent research and observations on one of the most exciting and innovative technologies in DNA research that has been discovered in recent years. This book, without a doubt, will stand the test of time as being the authoritative reference on DNA forensic research. This book is packed with research and information that will enlighten you to the technological breakthroughs that are being made in forensic science. I have heard Dr. Butler speak and read several of his papers. He is without question the expert in DNA analysis with STR markers and this book has the distinction of being the best book ever written on the subject. Get this book, study it and find out why STR markers are the groundbreaking method for DNA analysis. If you are in any way involved with DNA research, you will find this book a desktop reference you will turn to again and again.

        5 out of 5 stars Marvelous work!.......2001-03-21

This book has opened my eyes to the vast world of DNA analysis. It is an invaluable resource to those who want to understand how criminal justice will advance into the new millennium. Butler's text will be the keystone of DNA analysis in the future. I look forward to revised editions as new things arise.

                                4 out of 5 stars Very informative.......2007-09-03

First thing I need to say is that this book is an overview of English Language and designed for average intelligent adults, not for serious academic settings. You'll notice plenty of photographs, charts, and such. It's quite fun to flip to any page and just start reading. It included a lot of contemporary figures, like pop singers, current politicians, and authors. It tried to make readers understand the older form of English culture by linking the current one to it. I must say this approach worked only so far as to get your feet wet. Again, it's an introductory sort of book, but still has many things we modern citizens don't know about English.

4 out of 5 stars good breadth; a bit shallow.......2007-03-23

This book is somewhere between a reference and an entertainment. It has a large amount of material, some useful as well as other that is merely curious. It is beautifully printed, but the large format might be difficult to handle. Open it anywhere and you are sure to find something you did not know.

5 out of 5 stars 1st Edition same as 2nd Edition and a lot Cheaper.......2006-12-15

Buy the 1st Edition and save yourself thirty bucks.

It's got the same cover (but a different color), the same number of pages (506 pages) and is as far as I can tell, the exact same book. I'm tired of "edition inflation." Buy the first edition and save yourself a lot of money.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent help for all interested in English language!.......2006-02-18

I'm a student of the Department of English Studies in Poland and I found the book a great help; everything's explained accurately and clearly, and the general layout is so neat that it's a pleasure to read the book! Of course, the book will be extremely helpful mostly for people really interestd in the English linguistics and similar topics closely connected with English language. Personally, I find the book just GREAT; it met my expectations and it's one of the most precious books in my whole library! RECOMMENDED!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A broad look at the English Language - great articles and amply illustrated.......2005-07-26

We use English everyday. We even studied spelling and grammar in school (maybe not as much as we should have studied). However, most of us do not know the origins of the language, how it has changed over the centuries, or its variants around the globe. Today, English is used by more people in India than in the United Kingdom and the United States combined. So, whose English is authoritative and why? I am not saying it is not the Queen's English that is not the standard of our language, I am just pointing out that there is room for discussion and reconsideration.

David Crystal has provided an amply illustrated journey through English that begins with considerations of what a model of English might look like and then takes us through a fascinating history of our language from the Old English through today's World English. Part II provides five chapters on the vocabulary and lexicon of English. Part III tackles the knotty problem of English grammar. Part IV discusses spoken and written English, Part V talks about the varieties of using English by region, societal variation, and even personal variation. Part VI talks about learning and studying English. The appendices are full of useful information such as a glossary, references, further reading list, index, and so forth.

The book is worth having just for the concise history it provides the English language, but the other discussions are worth knowing about and considering the various points of view the author provides us. As always, it is not necessary to agree with everything provided by a scholar to benefit from what he provides us. Just wrestling with the ideas and clarifying why you disagree with this or that point, or digging deeper to gain a richer understanding than the author provides are certainly worthwhile benefits to be gained.

An excellent read and reference for your bookshelf.

                                  Book Description

Following the discovery of manuscript materials, including hundreds of unpublished additions and changes, for Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language, Allen Reddick describes the conception, composition, writing, and subsequent revision of the first great English dictionary, and the only dictionary created by a great writer. In this second edition of his acclaimed study, Reddick incorporates new commentary and scholarship, and situates The Making of Johnson's Dictionary in current critical and scholarly debate.

My daughter is nearly ten now, and at a reading level well past these early reader chapter books, but when she heard that there were two new books in this series she hadn't read yet, she asked if we could get them. Judy Moody inspires that kind of interest, with humor both kids and adults can enjoy, and characters with whom kids can really identify. Judy is a passionate, intelligent girl who cares about the world around her, but sometimes finds herself in a bit of a mess. She loves her brother, nicknamed Stink, though they often drive each other crazy in ways that will be familiar to any family. These first three books in the series are inventive and sweet, and offer an enjoyable kids-eye view of school. It's great to have them together in an affordable collection -- I'm getting it for my 7-year-old niece.
