A book focusing in improving the soil quality in field farming. Very detailed but at the same time extremely coprehensible even for begginers in organic farming. Although the major reference of the book is concerning soils the writer offers a very practical approach to the whole aspect of sustainable organic farming.
It remains to me (an organic fruit farmer) to set all the knowledge offered in the book working in my tree farm.
Under the strictest examination it easily achieves 4 stars.

this book is a basic text book introductory to the org. development comes very handy to org. consulting students and practitioners. it covers in a rather shallow fashion systematically most aspects of the subjects, activities of this occupation. it can be used as a basic but exhaustive reference.

Dr. Naskrecki's photography and the reproduction of it has created a book full of rare jewels! He is an entomologist with an eye for beauty and humor...all in the persuit of science. This book should be shared with children that they may learn what magic can be found behind a leaf or under a stone. His writing is concise and informative. This book is for everyone who appreciates what we have been given on this planet!

A must have for all nature lovers. Get this book along and "Rainforest" by Thomas Marent and you'll be amazed of the wonderfull creatures that inhabit this world. This book is outstanding... Period! The work that went into this book results in a standard that will be incredibly hard to beat. Even though this is a serious work in natural history I certainly WOULD recommend this as a gift for a younger child, because they would be thrilled with the photographs all by themselves. Fun to read, this book is primarily a book of nature photography. And Oh, what photographs... the book would be worth every penny just for the photos of these small animals. If nothing else have your local library obtain this book.

I didn't think this book was worth the read. It is very basic and anyone that puts time into the game would already know most of what is detailed in this book.

This book is very very basic. I'm surprised at Jose the bowlers' review. He could only have been talking about conventional vs fingertip drilling as this book does not address the layout and drilling of a bowling ball at all. It is scorekeeping and the pin numbers and basic information about lanes and four steps. For a very raw beginner or teaching a class of beginners, it would work.

The books sends a profound message about life here in California, which is not entirely factual. When I have read the book it made me realized that how people perceived California is greatly influenced by what we hear and see from the media and television. This is a super-cute collection and well worth the bucks to buy in the boxed set. I'm one of the jealous Madonna fans who loves to hate her. A fan since Madonna first hit the scene, I never liked her (because I always wanted to BE her). Consequentially, once upon a time Madonna became more than just obnoxious: she's stinking-richie. She's out there, doing the Mrs. Ritchie thing. Ritchie-Rich-Rich!! So I seldom, if ever, purchase anything in the form of a new Madonna product. Lucky for her? she was able to hire state-of-the-art-illustrators to create these little books, which are comforting... Especially when the only thing you can afford is toast. If you like well-made, pretty childrens books, a plus. A percentage of the purchase goes to help poor orphans, and that's cool. Madonna should keep doing more of that kind of stuff (helping people with the money she enmasses). It's true she had her daughter, Lola, going around to schools reading these books as part of her allowance and/or Mom's perceived ritchie-rich duties of the child to some semi-interested or adoring public. (Poor kid. But the drama of it all must be what memories are made of.) These books have a sentimental quality that reminds one, Madonna is a person. An icon, yes, but also a human being. Yet it seems Madonna has had to pay-off every single person in her life. So these books portray an attitude of someone who wants to overcome that (buying people's love and/or pleasing and controlling them with money). She does it by dedicating the books to members of her immediate family and Husband Ritchie... They are a bit of a cry for help I feel. Madonna would love to be remembered for more than just physical things; but wouldn't we all?

I purchased these books for my 6 and 8 year old nieces, and they absolutely adore them. I read the books with them, and they are wonderful. The illustrations are breath taking as well. All the books carry a positive message and teach young kids how to deal with sittuations they will go through in life on day. A definite proof that Madonna has taken a step foward with her life. Wonderful job, love them.

I have looked at and read 3 out of 5 of her books in a local bookstore. I have to agree with another review I read that summed up the teaching of English Roses as "Don't hate me because I am beatiful." and as for Abdi I would have to say you could sum up the teaching by saying, "Because I said so! That is why." It never dealved into the teaching of "certainty" or why "what we are given is for the best". I never found that connection made in the writing that would gently unfold an understanding of what she is trying to share. It mostly just leaves one with no connection but that it just somehow all works out. In all children's stories there is an element of parenting from the writer/teacher/storyteller that illuminates the magic of what it is they are teaching. I feel like I am be told a story by a slighly angry nun that wants me to just not ask questions and just accept what she says! Now! It leaves me feeling like an orphan in a catholic orphanage. Madonna herself did not have the parenting she needed growing up, she shared that in her Truth or Dare film.
Abdi does not even feel like a child. There is nothing about him in his experience of childhood other than... she added in much mention about how Abdi needed to find a restroom... Well that is one more thing children can relate to.. "I gotta go!" & "Because I said so!" hmmmm.. would you not like your children to have a deeper meaning not to mention understanding than that? I am disapointed in her publishers for not challenging her to develope what could be an adventure but only left me thinking, "huh? wait a minute let me reread this! You mean there is no teaching in here other than, if your famous you can write anything even if you don't really understand it."
I also noticed that the artwork is some of the most colorful and grabbing work, I guess that is one way to compensate for poor story developement, is she that scary no one could bother to ask more of her at the publishing house. Maybe they just figured what the heck! We'll make money off of anything she does she is famous! I want to buy a second hand copy, block out all of the text and write a story I would enjoy so that all of the imaginative artwork does not go to waste. Now that would be fun.
Abdi learns valuble lessions about life A Very Thought Provoking Book!!.......2005-07-13
This is Madonna's 4 Childrens book. It is about a young boy named Abdi who worked for an old man named Eli who owned a jewerly shop. Eli made small gems given to him by customers into more beautiful things like diamonds. People thought he had a special powers because he was so talented. He also taught Abdi important things about life. One day Habib had heard of Eli and the wonderful things he made from less pretty things. He gave Eli a necklace made of stones and said it needed to be be made into something more beautful for the Queens birthday. Eli had 4 weeks do this before the deadline. Abdi and Eli worked very hard because they did not want to dissapoint the King. The necklace was finsished but it was told it had to be delivered right away. Eli was old,tired, and weak and Abdi with some hesistance took over and went on a journey to the King and Queens Palace to deliver the beautiful necklace Eli had made.
At night Abdi was tired and had stopped to sleep and 2 men stole his precious necklace. Abi was not aware of this until he had reached the kingdom. He opened the bag but instead of a beautiful necklace and snake fell out of it.
Poor little Abdi was thrown in jail with the snake. Abdi eventually even became friends with snake. He always remembered what Eli said no matter what happens in life it all happens for a reason and to truely believe in it. Eli came and got Abdi out of jail and reassures the King that the snake is not poisonous and once the snake is put on the Queen it would magically turn into a beautiful necklace which it did. Abdi was greatly rewarded for this and he himself later became a jeweler.
The moral of the story is that we get given tests in life which we may not like. We also learn from these tests that we should never give up no matter how bad things may get because all things do eventually happen for a good reason. This is a valuable lesson that everyone not just kids could learn from. I enjoyed reading this book and it provoked a lot of thought in me. There are also some very nice illustrations in this book but a lot of the pages have 2 different rectangular prints at the top and 2 different retangular prints at the bottom for more space for writing.
