Book Description
Case studies provide a wonderful resource for helping develop the analytic, organizational, critical thinking, and communication skills of today's readers. James O'Rourke's The Business Communication Casebook: A Notre Dame Collection makes it easy for instructors to incorporate case coverage into their business communication courses. This casebook highlights (36) well-known companies, such as Denny's Restaurants, Firestone Tires, Bruegger's Bagels, and Texaco Inc. A series of discussion questions and applications follows each case. In addition, James O'Rourke provides supplementary resources for a majority of the cases. This inexpensive casebook can be used in conjunction with any Business Communication theme or issue.
Book Description
Organizational Behavior: Integrated Models and Applications directly addresses many of the current trends in the market and approaches OB from a non-traditional perspective. Rather than trying to cover the broad spectrum of OB topics found in a survey text, a carefully selected list of topics is dealt with in greater detail. Particular emphasis is placed on application of these topics in real world settings. This text has been specifically designed for use in an Organizational Behavior course in which the instructor makes a conscious choice to place major emphasis on the four higher levels of learning in Bloom's taxonomy.

Book Description
Nontarget Effects of Biological Control is the first book of its kind. The environmental safety of biological control has come under scrutiny due to several areas of concerns: the irreversibility of alien introductions, the prevalence of host switching to innocuous native or beneficial species, dispersal of the biocontrol agent to new habitats away from croplands, and the lack of research on the efficacy and impact of biocontrol attempts. The debate has been strongly polarized between conservationists and biological control practitioners.
Nontarget Effects of Biological Control proposes that retrospective analyses of systems in place in which nontarget effects are now documented or suspected provide the necessary information for planning and evaluating future releases to reduce risk. The book presents case histories of past biological control introductions from island and continental ecosystems.

Long before Jackie Robinson crossed baseball's color line, before Jack Johnson spawned a line of Great White Hopes desperate to take the heavyweight boxing crown back from a black man, Major Taylor was setting records and fighting bigotry in one of the most popular athletic arenas of the turn of the century. The "Extraordinary" in the title of this steady biography is not just spinning wheels.
Both a world and national champion, Taylor bicycled to glory on three continents. His name on the marquee meant added revenue and attendance. In Europe, he was a superstar, and treated like one. Yet he was mocked by fellow riders in America, shunned by his sport's establishment, and died forgotten and penniless in Chicago in 1932. Part of why Taylor should be remembered is the way he reacted to the hatred he had to ride against: "I always played the game fairly and tried my hardest," he wrote in his own autobiography, which Ritchie thoroughly mines, "although I was not always given a square deal or anything like it ... I only ask from them the same kind of treatment which I give and am willing to continue to give."
Ritchie does yeoman's service in reviving Taylor's story and giving it context with a carefully studied examination of what life was like for black Americans 100 years ago. More importantly, he reaches into the muck of the past and returns with a clear picture of an endangered species: the thoroughly decent human being. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
World champion at 19... One of the first black athletes to become world champion in any sport... 1-mile record holder... American sprint champion in 1898, 1899, 1900... triumphant tours of Europe and Australia... Victories against all European champions...
Until now a forgotten, shadowy figure, Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor is here revealed as one of the early sports world's most stylish, entertaining, and gentlemanly personalities. Born in 1878 in Indianapolis, the son of poor rural parents, Taylor worked in a bike shop until prominent bicycle racer "Birdie" Munger coached him for his first professional racing successes in 1896. Despite continuous bureaucratic--and, at times, physical--opposition, he won his first national championship two years later and became world champion in 1899 in Montreal. This beautifully illustrated, vividly narrated, and scrupulously researched biography recreates the life of a great international athlete at the turn of the century. Based on ten years of research--including extensive interviews with Major Taylor's 91-year old daughter--this is the dramatic story of a young black man who, against prodigious odds, rose to fame and stardom in the tempestuous world of international professional bicycle racing a century ago.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent early history of cycling and of a forgotten icon.......2004-09-03
As Ritchie points out himself, it is surprising that it took a white englishman to compile such a comprehensive history of an American black man who was one of, if not the first black world champion in any sport and one of cycling's orginal superstars.
While the book makes for a good short history of the early years of cycling as a sport and how it has evolved, Taylor's transcends the sport of cycling and provides a rich glimpse into early 20th century racial issues, the development of transportation in the US, the twighlight of the Guilded Age and the onset of the Great Depression. Ritchie weaves all of these together in a compelling manner.
In hindsight, while the likes of Jesse Owens and Jackie Robinson are often credited with being the original trailblazers for black athletes, they owe much to the brave steps taken by the now sadly little remembered Major Taylor. This book is long overdue.
Important History - Not Just About Bicycling.......1999-04-22
This book was originally published by Bicycle Books in San Francisco. I would hope that it would still be available, even though 5 years ago hardback copies were selling at chain bookstores for as little as $4 a copy. The Ritchie book is written not just from the perspective of bicycling history (although it is well-researched from that point of view), but as an important social history. In addition, it reminds us of the history of the development of transportation and how bicycles were eventually pushed out of the public vision of having right-of-way to being relegated to the closed track of the velodrome so they wouldn't get in the way of the growing automobile culture. Major Taylor's career is important in the history of racism and attempted and often effective exclusion of Blacks not just from racing opportunities, but from the subsequent business opportunities that followed on the heels of the age of the turn-of-the-century racers. The largest reason that Major Taylor died a pauper was because he was not allowed to participate on an equal level with White businessmen in the developing automobile industry, according to Ritchie's research. Turn of the century bicycle racers, as Ritchie points out, were instrumental in contributing to the design of the shock system and the use of pneumatic tires, among other features, of the emerging American automobile. They also were some of the large investors in the industry upon their retirement from active racing status. Taylor wanted to participate in the design process and applied to a university for formal education in engineering, but was denied access, despite his hard-won efforts, previous inventions in bicycle design and testing, and celebrity status. The fact that the man died early of a stroke and alienated from his family and community in the end can only speak of a man who, after putting out his entire life, had finally been broken by the pressure of living in a racist society. Yet, writing his autobiography and selling it door to door evokes the phoenix-like quality of many members of the Black community who survive and thrive in spite of great hardship, even in our present times.
Well written, very well documented important historical work.......1999-03-31
This is a very enjoyable book. Very well researched and documented (almost to a fault). Anyone who is serious about the history of bicycle racing in the USA must add this book to their library. After reading this book one must wonder how great Major Taylor would have been if the playing field was equal. Highly Recommended!!
Major Taylor, worlds greatest cyclist of incredible morals.......1997-02-14
I found this story of a black man in this early 1900 era extremely fascinating. His beliefs in fair play, extrodinary dedication to his faith and his hobby made him a role model for any and all to follow. his persistance in perfecting his beloved sport despite all of the negativity of this era, to me was unbelieveable.
I read few books cover to cover but I have had the pleasure of reading this one 4 times. Ritchie has this book so well documented that anyone reading it would have no problem of becoming totally engrossed in it. A well done from me.
Book Description
Based on the Natural Approach, Dos mundos: En breve stresses the use of engaging activities and interesting readings in a natural and spontaneous classroom atmosphere. In this comprehension-based approach to learning language, the development of communicative language skills is the central goal, with formal grammar presentation and grammar practice at the service of communication. The text is designed so that class time can be devoted to exposing students to Spanish through creative activities and readings, allowing grammar explanations and exercises to be studied outside the classroom.

GET IT USED!!!.......2007-10-05
BUY IT USED!!!!! The bind-in passcode is worthless because they publishers have already made that material FREE on their website!!! ... I thought I needed it for school, but it turns out that my school has a specialized workbook on their own website, which I had to pay for separately anyway. Great text, just not worth full price.
WHAT a ridiculously organized textbook!.......2006-07-07
The organization of this text is incredibly unhelpful to the introductory Spanish student. Conjugated verb forms, reflexive pronouns, and general vocabulary words are very often used long before the text actually _defines_ or _explains_ the words. Keep in mind that most American students now have little to no training in grammatical structure, so they will not be able to deduce the meaning of a word based on its location in a sentence.
Page design is similarly horrible--the "blue pages" at the end of each chapter are crammed full of text with very little white space or other categorizing strategy. Critical information is shoved off to the margins or relegated to footnotes.
My teacher did the best she could with the text, but she also relied heavily on the instructor's manual-- and the manual took the class all over the textbook in no particular chronological order. I felt badly for her because of the amount of explanation she had to do in order to pull the text together into any kind of coherency.
If you're a teacher pondering adoption of this text, run, RUN in the opposite direction! Let's hope the current edition is much improved. Exponentially much improved.
A reasonable book but the online resources it boasts about really suck.......2006-07-03
The book is OK, but don't count on finding any of the online stuff that the book boasts about on the back cover. I have looked everywhere trying to find it, but to no avail. I think they discontinued all the premium content or something. The website it gives to enter your registration code doesn't have a place to register. I recently emailed McGraw Hill tech support to ask what happened to the online content, but I am still waiting for a response.
Worth considering.......2005-12-13
Dos Mundos En Breve is used in my college class intro to Spanish. The text and example sentences are age appropriate. Vocabulary lessons are substantially in Spanish. Grammar lessons in English follow each chapter, and are on distinctively colored pages for ease in locating.
The learning method is by use of context as vocabulary is added. Students are required to try to understand what is written in Spanish by reference to photos and drawings, chapter titles, and other clues before looking up the translation of newly introduced Spanish words listed at the end of each chapter. It is not boring or difficult. The scheme works well.
The problem is a dearth of pronunciation help for Spanish letters and words. For pronunciation new students will need either, or both, a teacher or another source to supplement this text.
Spanish for Dummies is inexpensive, does this well, and is recommended whether you are studying on your own or taking a Spanish class.
Serious students of Spanish also will find Cliff Notes Spanish I and II (two books) excellent adjuncts to Dos Mundos. Paperbacks of LaCrousse Spanish-English dictionary (ISBN 2035420172) and of The Big Red Book of Spanish Verbs are essential, good choices among many, and fun.
The publisher of Dos Mundos En Breve has an extensive website especially for this book which helps learning Spanish and hear it spoken. The website is used with a separate Dos Mundos En Breve workbook. New books and college classes using this text may make the web site available free, but if you have to pay for it, it is not expensive and entirely worth the cost.
Also, don't overlook the many internet websites that help make learning Spanish fun and easy.

Didn't suck that bad.......2007-09-14
Sheesh, after reading most of these reviews, I guess I disagree with you all. I actually liked this book.
extravagant business book.......2007-09-05
Think like a billionaire review.
Every time after reading a book i always try to write a review. because i can remember the story and the impressive parts at least through reviews. A few month ago i bought a book ' Trump's 'think like a billionaire'. virtually I never thought i do a business.
i never concerned about appearance before, how to dress and groom, beauty, fashion...and so on. But now i became a businessman. i have to think of my wordrobe every morning. and i have to go shopping to buy clothing for work every weekend. and sometimes browsing website getting information fashion news and getting nice fashion style. it comes to one of my work for business. i've been going school for 21years. elementary school 6yrs, middle&high school 6yrs, undergraduate 4yrs, graduate for master degree 3yrs, and for phd degree 2yrs past already and the sum of those schooling yrs is 21yrs. OMG!!!
and i used to work at the Korea Government Organization for 3yrs. it couldn't say i did a business job. that means i never used to involve to business world. But these day i realized that i'm a quite business-oriented girl. Even though there are so many annoying and irritating things around me, but doing business is pretty exciting job. I'm not interested in the money thing. But i'm so concerning about accomplishing something. maybe i'm a ambitious girl? or overambitious? Trump said 'billionaires love their jobs, not because their jobs make them wealthy, but because they wouldn't have become so wealthy doing something that they hated. You have to love what you're doing, because then it won't seem like work to you and you will bring the necessary energy to profit from it. That passion alone will take care of ninety percent of any problems with any job ^^;
Anyway the reason i pick up this book is that i'm so exciting to know how the successful people managing their life and how they think, what kind of life they plan ..something like that. my opinion on this book is that this book is so funny and easy reading. i could notice he is so selfish and proudy himself, arrogant, ostentatious but funny, humorous, and audacious. and this book seems like kind of advertisement of his TV show 'The Apprentice' He is so proud of his TV show(Actually i don't like this show..so boring). But there are many things i should follow him and need to learn. that's why i'm writing this review. i need to memorize those sentences in this book. not because of my successful business but because of just my future life. For example Trump said ' Another way to pinch pennies is to avoid the brand names when it's necessary. I obviously buy brand names when the brand is tied to a priduct's quality. Golf equipment, jewelry, and clothing are good examples of brand as a signifier of quality. But aspirin is aspirin, shampoo is shampoo, and cereal is cereal, so don't throw away your money on packaging and advertising'
As a matter of fact we just used to learn how to make a money, usually nobody teaches us how to use money. this sentence is one of examples how to use money. For a long time i've been thinking to purchase brand names luxury products such as high-end, expensive watches, bags, cars. are useless, just extravagant. But I changed my mind if those products could make somebody confident, it's good thing.Trump said ' People want to do business with people who look good, and if you look like crap, you're not going anywhere' ,' you should invest in some high-quality items that you can rotate throughout your week.'it takes money to make money, and clothing is always a good invest' . I agree with him. if we want to doing good business, let's invest for our clothing and accessaries.
We used to criticize people who did plastic surgery for beauty. it comes to purchsing brand names luxury products.
Now i like brand names bags, watches, clothings...i stopped criticizing them ^^ i'm sorry.
If you want to be good businessman, want to manage your money well. just read this book lightly. it's not thick, and easy reading,
Best sentences in this book
The more you have , the more you can give
Good investors are good students
Education is a money machine
a slow starter is always the fastest finisher
someone is disloyal to you once, they will be disloyal to you again
Compliments work better, and sometimes silence is the best form of criticism available.
Outstanding.......2007-09-03
This is an excellent read for anyone looking to cultivate the traits of a winner in business and life. Donald Trump is one of the most insightful people on the planet. He cuts through the clutter on every type of business and personal issue and gets to the heart of what's really being said or done. Read this book for the broad insights, not just single how-to specifics.
He shows how you too can cultivate the same successful traits he has been blessed with. For those Donald detractors - realize that his ego is a big part of who he is and is what drives him (and all other overachievers). Just get over it and learn.
You're Fired!.......2007-06-05
Sorry for the corny title, but it was obvious. This was a true disappointment.
Every section of the book (and there are 5) is made up of "Chapters" in fact there are 67 sections to this book - which is just an excuse to insert blank pages, and start the next page half way down the page. Talk about a book printed full of "air" - of the 263 pages, over 60 were BLANK!! The information was mediocre at best and only scratched the surface of any topic. It is also interesting to note that the book is titled "Think Like a Billionaire" and the final section of the book (40 pages) is about the participants of the apprentice show and has nothing to do with the subject of the book.
I must however say that Mr. Trump is probably the only person around who can take such garbage, sell it to the public - and get away with it!
He is indeed an amazing businessman, but don't waste your time with this poor excuse of a book.
Awesome Book !!!.......2007-05-18
If having a billionaire mindset is what your looking for then you have found the right book. This book differed from a lot of Trumps other books a bit. I love the way he gave pointers on life. This book gives you a more pesonal look at Trump and his orginizaton and deals with how he thinks through sitiuation. I would diffinately add this to my business book collection.
